ViKingPrime checking in here! Thank you so, so much for the feature, a dream come true for me. As an aside, to explain the online tag, since I know Simon will appreciate this - it actually comes from StarCraft. There was a player called MarineKing who played for Team Prime and he excelled at using the base unit in the game (the Marine). For anyone who knows the game, you'll also be familiar with a unit called the Viking, which is a much derpier thing to control... the inside joke being my Viking control was excellent.

Thank you for the excellent puzzle. And one I could actually do! (I love watching the hard solves, but it does feel really good to figure one out myself from time to time.)

Congratulations on your debut on the channel! I tried the puzzle before watching Simon's video and really enjoyed solving it. It was very interesting (and a bit of a brain bender) to not be on autopilot for the longer thermos but have to actually consider my options carefully.

I know you don't like pencil marking thermos like Mark does, but in this instance it definitely helps, the first thing I got was the whole of column 5
@Hybban
@Hybban Год назад
Same for me. You can easily place the 5 and the 7 by checking the markings with columns 3 and 7. And then the rest of column 5 follows.

Agreed, started pencil marking the two 9 cell thermos and a lot of stuff just started to fall together, They nicely force the 8 cell thermo by knocking out the 6.in the middle

Great fun ... practically a GAS! Finished in 10:30, I feel like this is one where Simon would have benefited from just splattering the thermos with pencil marks because there are several things that become obvious a lot more quickly when you do that.
@nickatty462
@nickatty462 Год назад
I thought that, but then found myself stuck right at the end trying to resolve the two left hand columns (and a bit of other stuff over on the right). I'm not sure if I've made a mistake earlier, or am missing something obvious [edited - just needed a bit more confidence in my pencil marks! Now that I've watched the video, Simon does it more elegantly, but it's the 123/456 thermos in box 4 pushing things around in box 7 that I was missing].

I enjoyed this puzzle very much. Loved the tweak on thermo rules. Put me down as another pencil marker. Went to town on the two long thermos right away, then used that to deal with column 5. Only then did I start to think more deeply about what could go where.
@stevewithaq
@stevewithaq Год назад
I had to pause for a bit with the rules, because I read "the digit 1 may be considered as having the value of 1 or 10" as possibly meaning the SAME 1 could be considered 1 or 10 at the same time, but then realized that would make such a puzzle impossible without other clues, as there would be a minimum of 9 solutions. So I tried the puzzle out, and solved it in 12:05! Nice, approachable puzzle, even with the twist!

Pretty musical intro!! And what a cool website, well done Wayne!! As for the puzzle, hats off. Beautifully simple, simply beautiful. Love the ruleset, some of the deductions were quite elegant, it really had the same quality and beauty as some of these harder puzzles out there. I hope to see more VikingPrime puzzles on the channel in the future! We’ll set, well solved :)

I think this is the first puzzle I have ever solved faster than Mark or Simon. And the difference was "Goodliffing" it. The extra pencil marking helped me immensely in spotting the middle thermo excluded digits.

I haven't been able to complete many sudokus lately because I've fallen out of practice and some are just a bit too hard. This was exactly the right level for me! Solved in 16 minutes, but I had to restart once because I messed up a bit. Absolutely love it!

I thoroughly enjoyed that one, thank you. I started watching the video, but quickly saw a way in and stopped to have a go at the puzzle before watching the rest. I was very happy to solve it relatively quickly and then enjoyed watching Simon solve it in a slightly different way. Much as I like the long videos, it’s great to have some shorter videos with easier puzzles too.

13:17 for me, with plenty of smiles on my face! That was a beautiful vignet of non-trivial minipuzzles and yet not too difficult. Not in the increasingly heavily populated area of back-breaking "pain will lead to pleasure" deep puzzles that we see on CtC, more like a delightful Mozart divertimento than a Mahler symphony. Simon was rightly smiling all through his solve. Many thanks to ViKingPrime for the box of chocolates.

As a person with minimal sudoku experience that just stumbled upon CTC a few months ago (and has watched daily since), I really love when you feature "approachable" puzzles. Most puzzles, I just have to watch in mind-boggling amazement (and sometimes mild confusion). Being able to finally solve a puzzle myself gave me a whole new level of enjoyment! I can understand how people get so obsessed with sudoku now!

It's fun to see how different we solve them just by using different logic. The very first 8 digits I placed were on the middle thermometer. Since you had pairs of numbers in the two large one and you knew 2 was in the bulb in the middle one, it meant the only digits possible going down would be 3/4, 4/5, 5/6, ... 9/10(1)... Once you hit the middle box you get a 5/6 option but the 6/7 pair from the two large thermos means you can auto place the 5. Letting you fill out the rest of the thermo. Meanwhile I didn't actually fill out the 2 large thermos until about the middle of my solve.

Finally a Sudoku I could do without having to refer to the video for a clue about the break in!

16:11 for me. Great fun, this puzzle. Thank you very much ViKingPrime!! :-) Goodliffing the thermo of c5 in combination with c3 and c7 worked good in the solve.

Sometimes these number substitute Sudokus throw me off but this was very logical and easy to follow. Very nice puzzle.

16:28. Agree with pencil marking thermos comments. I tend to a lot and in this case made it super easy, barely an inconvenience!

At 23:10, the left thermo in box 7 cannot be 7-8-9. There's already a 9 in row 7.

Simon's reluctance to take the approach of Pencil Mark slows him down again! Not that I'd want Simon to change. 16:21 for me and I can see many people in the comments managed to be even faster.

9:38 for me, including a gaff where I had to back up a bit where I typed the wrong digit and went down the wrong path. 😄 Very nice puzzle!

I pencil-marked the long thermos in columns 3, 5 and 7 straight away, which allowed me to place the 5 and 7 in the central box and fill in the bottom part of column 5. That said, Simon's general solve of the rest of the puzzle was much more elegant than mine. A wonderful, approachable puzzle. Simon's title for this puzzle brings up an intriguing possibility. Has anyone ever created a Möbius thermo puzzle where the digits can wrap around, at most, one time along the length of the thermo? For example, you could have a column-filling thermo that went 2,4,6,9,1,3,5,7,8. You could even have some thermos longer than 9 cells if they bent around. I'm not a sudoku constructor, but I could see that rule set variation as having some potential.

I could almost swear something like this was done a year or two ago. I think it was technically a loop puzzle? Don't quote me on that, my memory on particulars is terrible.

23 and change to finish. Pretty interesting addition of adding a 10 to the thermo since it messes with what would otherwise be obvious.

I actually gave this one a go before watching the solve, since Simon described it as approachable. Got it in 27:44. I'm writing this comment before watching the solve in the video, but I must confess I fell into a trap I've chuckled at Simon for doing many a time- I briefly thought I had broken the puzzle due to a deadly pattern, before realizing it was solved by one of the extra rules (the thermo in this case). My apologies to Simon, I must concede that it's much easier to fall into that trap while solving than it seems when simply observing!

I assume ten is the most used non-sudoku digit because of XV dominos. Four is also important to several rules such as Kropki Dots and German Whisper Lines, so maybe that’s why it hold the top position.
