Man, what a lens! The micro four thirds advantage in full display. Probably the best budget telephoto lens you can get for wildlife photography and videography. I can't believe how light it is! Let's test out the Olympus 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 II on the Olympus EM1 III, in anticipation of the OM-1. Full frame can't make a lens like this. How does it compare to the Fuji XT4 with 70-300mm? And the Sony A7S III with the 100-400mm GM?

I bought that lens a while back, you can forgive the plasticky build, lack of weather sealing, slow aperture and no lens VR when you realise you are taking it places that you never would one of the honking full frame superteles. You bring home shots and footage that you just wouldn't be getting otherwise. I usually just pack it with an EM5 and a couple of the dinky primes, super light, just throw it in a messenger bag and head out. Total liberation!

When you compare the Tonys, remember that the equivalence only refers to the appearance of the bokeh, in terms of the actual light coming into the sensor, an f4 on m43 or an f4 on FF is the same. Same amount of light hitting the sensor relative to its size.

The exposure is the same, but in terms of data captured it's just different. Smaller surface area, less photons, less data. Not inherently good or bad, but just a trait. We have to be realistic with ourselves, or our smartphones with the f/1.8 apertures would be insanely powerful if there were zero drawbacks. Just physics.
@youuuuuuuuuuutube
@youuuuuuuuuuutube 2 года назад
The same amount of light RELATIVE to its size yes, but not the same total amount of light, and that's what matters. So yes the equivalence function works very well, just multiply everything by 2 and it's valid for both light and bokeh.

i wouldnt say it's a good price, considering the a7iv ($2500) and how cheap a used g9 is (i recently had one for $500andsomething, but i suppose you can find one for 6-700 pretty often). i guess if you're in their target, a wildlife or landscape photographer, it might be worth 2200 for that purpose .. but if you're not, i think although it is a good camera (and quite an upgrade from em1iii) it's not worth that money. 1500-1700 at most. and so far i havent seen video af proper reviews, but erveryone says af is quite good in photo - i guess they blew it and the video af sucks (compared to the similarly priced sony/canon)?

I just used this lens at a Civil War reenactment. I could not believe how quickly I could work with a 600 mm equivalent. I saw people with APS-C cameras using these huge lenses that begged for a tripod. The darkness of the viewfinder due to the narrow aperture was sometimes a problem but this is a small tradeoff. Most of the time I was working in bright sunlight where this was not an issue. This lens is an amazing value for the $350 I paid for it.

All there is left is the so-called bad colors. I guess you'll get there too with post-production or that color conversion plugin. So, G9 already ordered? PL 50-200/2.8-4.0 or the Oly 40-150/2.8, both with their teleconverter? So in the end you rediscovered the strengths of m43. Welcome back, took a while but you made it. Full circle achieved. 😋👍💪❤️

Depends on what you want but micro 4/3 is a decent system and certainly not dead yet and don't think it will ever be because there are so many benefits in such a light and compact system. With regards to wildlife videoography/photography. Yeah, full frame offers better low light and Toneh, but I've shot up to ISO 6400 with the G9 and Panasonic/Leica 100-400 in low light and with noise reduction software, looks ok to me. I really loved this video and how you're covering wildlife, and it covers my favorite lens focal length for Micro Four Thirds. I hope you don't mind if I copy a portion of a recent blog post I wrote for my website below? From blog post: I'm using VINTAGE 70-300 lenses (from the 90s) with Micro Four Thirds cameras (such as the GH4, G7, GX85 and G85) and I love that they render an image with a crop similar to a 600mm on full frame. My experience with this lens has been I've (almost) never wished for a longer lens, except for maybe the moon, or distant wildlife. I've used them for sports (mostly little league) and have been able to cover the entire field. As far as the "slow" max. aperture, I don't (usually) try to get f/2.8 telephoto lenses (because of the cost). My logic is that since the most common scenario to use such a telephoto is OUTDOORS, having a mere f/5.6 is almost always sufficient. The exception is when you're in a large indoor space and the light is low. In this case, I'm often using a focal reducer/speedbooster anyway, so my max. aperture ends up around f/4, and that works (even on a small Micro Four Thirds sensor).

I've not used the 75-300, but I'm not surprised it did well with just the IBIS. I tried the 100-400mm and did not like it. The 100-400 has three options: IBIS, IS, or both.. OK, both is not sync'd but I want to test all three. In my experience, IBIS only was the best of the three. I have the 300mm f4 and 40-150mm f2.8 but I was looking at the 100-400mm 5.0-6.3 IS. The 300mm is awesome, but I want the flexibility of a zoom in the 100-400mm range as the 300mm can be difficult to find your subject. Put two camera bodies (EM-1 ii) on a tandem mount and simultaneously recorded HH video at the dog park while using the 100-400, 300, 40-150 + 2x side-by-side. The 300 with dual IS is the best but it's not a zoom. The 100-400 and 40-150 + 2x have almost identical FOV... I put a measuring tape in the scene and could read where it entered and left the frame.. The 40-150mm F2.8 becomes 80-300mm f5.6 with the 2x teleconverter and comparable to the 100-400mm f5.0-6.3. IDK how or why, but the 40-150 with just IBIS was consistent and typically better than anything I could get out of the 100-400. The 100-400 might have less micro movement, but then it makes big jumps when you pan, recompose, or reposition. It might be good for photos, but not video. I already own the 40-150 so I sent the 100-400 back and purchased the 2x converter.

Hey Casey, don't quote me on this but I think on Olympus when you set it to max stabilization, it is "tripod mode" where you want to try and be static with your shots, and less stabilization allows you a bit more freedom to move around. Again, don't quote me, but I met with Olympus top brass when the EM1X was released, and he showed me allot of tricks.. sadly it was off camera and my memory is shit. I had actually suggested to him that they build user adjustable curves into the adjustment like on Alexmos gimbals so you can control how smooth the lead in and lead out are + speed while panning.. which would in essence stop stabilization jerk if set appropriately for the type of shots one is trying to achieve.

@@cameraconspiracies I'll look into it. I'm looking at taking your advice and get out there and take video of Bird Butts 🐦 and hope for better. So you know I went with the g85 from your advice so it is all your fault lol. I just couldn't justify the cost of a Sony a7iii. Maybe in the future.

Ahhh! In the first moments of the video I thought you were holding the new OM-1! Not your fault, I just thought it as logical by now that you would qualify to receive one. I'm sure that there was a important boardroom meeting about it.

Sony has it's own analogue 70-350 that can be used with a6600. I tried this combo for wildlife video handheld, liked the autofocus, but stabilization seems to be a lot worse, than here, even though the lens and the camera are stabilized and they are of the same manufacturer. Maybe I was doing something wrong, don't know, will investigate further. Especially because gimbals and tripods are not allowed in the park near my home.

Consider getting a Olympus camera if you want to make handheld wildlife video, even the cheaper Oly models will give you great ibis like the m10 mark iii.

3:00 That's not how calculating light/aperture/crop works. You can multiply focal length and aperture to get effective FOV and DOF but not light transmission. The light transmission per mm2 of sensor (as near as) for f/2.0 will be the same on FF and M43 so absolutely no need to multiply.

I had this lense, sold it thinking I could get the same thing or better with the 40-150 f/2.8 Pro with a 2x teleconverter. I 100% regret selling that lens.

12:29 - with so much snow the camera is tricked by it and lowers the exposure to protect highlights, but it is always overdoing it, just do atleast +0.7 in snowy conditions, but on that particular one without sun reflex you could have gone to + 1.5, +2

Imho, the perfect entrance into wildlife tele. The iq is surprisingly good, it is small, light and cheap. Ultra comfortable.

I have the G9 (and G9 II recently) and a 100-300 II and it doesn't look anywhere near as sharp at 300mm as in this footage. It improves when I stop it to f8 but still... this footage doesn't seem like it was stopped down, just look at the Toneh! People on forums say that this lens is similarly bad to the 100-300 at the long end, but that's not what I see. This one looks amazing! Or maybe it's just some sharpening in the camera? But still convincing. The stabilization sucks big time though, I'd like to see this lens on my G9 II, how would the IBIS handle it in video. And I always recommend something like 60P for handheld videos, low frame rates need a tripod and nd filter and stuff, 60P always looks a lot smoother and less jumpy, even when it's not slowed down. 60P is the future. ;)

i know it did not work for you, but the g9+100-300 will have better stabilization, similar weight and the zone af works quite well if you use it right- 4k60 for good content

I had the 100-300 but traded it for the 70-200 and liked it much better. Now I have an S5 and a brand new 70-300. I'll try it at a wildlife preserve next week...

@jeffslade1892
@jeffslade1892 2 года назад
Yeah, the equivalent Lumix lens is faster and stabilised. The Lumix Dual (G9 etc) eats IBIS for breakfast. Olympus will support Lumix OIS lenses with their own "Olympus Dual Stabilisation" which they don't talk about, it is not synchronised but works.

Welcome back to reasonable amateur photography/ cinematography. Now, try the G9 with the Leica 100-400m. Dual stabilization with your manual focus.
