The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Collection 

I think Macallan's marketing team has successfully transcended their brand into a different level over any other investment whisky. People are going to go crazy over them and pay massive amounts of money for a mediocre whisky....but then as you said who cares about the whisky? Its the status symbol that comes with buying these bottles that makes the Macallan economy go around.

Totally agree, Mark! Too much marketing has left Macallan definitely at the top of the pyramid interns of brand but way bellow in terms of whisky quality. It’s a real pity. I love Macallan for what it has produced in the past, but it leaves me with a sweet and sour taste in my mouth.

The concept 1, 2, 3... London, NY, cacao, fine cacao, night on earth, home collection, sir blake ......now 6 more 007 bottles ! The marketing Dept running at full speed to get these NAS out the door; it's all about the artwork and marketing and the creativity of a distillery left only to the packaging and the story they made up as they go.

Bang on the money Mark. With better planning, and investment in packaging, Macallan could have produced a classic series. However, with a new liquid which is probably good, I won't be investing. I'll find drinking and investing more fulfilling with a Daftmill, Royal Brackla, Penderyn (Port finish), or Bruichladdich liquids, for examples!

I love this channel, being from Louisville, KY the center of the Bourbon world, I have recently started to learn about Scotch Whisky!! I had the chance to buy the Macallan Edition 1-6 collection and decided against it. I watched your video and agreed with your points. I am thinking about buying the Macallan 18yo Sherry Cask and the Macallan 18yo Double Cask January 2023.

I agree with your comments, very well thought through artwork and marketing. Little thought gone into the selection of the whisky, probably fairly young and no sherry cask finish etc. quite disappointing really ! I have many Macallan whiskies in my collection but not impressed with this release at £600 per bottle!

Great review Mark, like you say I also got the 18 sherry oak for around £300 and then the home with prints for £400 so to think that a tube nas with James bond is worth £600???? No but also like you say the market will go mental for it because its Macallan, its concerning the way Macallan is going as it seems its more quantity than quality.

Hi Mark, great video as always. Do you know what happened to the Sherry - 18 years - 2022? It´s very hard to find and about 600 Euro. Last year I had no problem to get my fingers on the 2021 and only paid around 400 Euro. Really rare bottle here in Germany.

I'm guessing all this marketing and push of their NAS whiskies presents a perception of scarcity (with it being a limited release). This will likely be what's going to pay for the continual creation of their core range of aged whiskies, and also what helps to recoup some of the cost of building/maintaining their new distillery. Seems like there's been much more of these kinds of NAS releases since their new distillery has been built. It would make sense that profit margins are much greater on these types of whiskies.

I think McAllen went too far this time they gave more importance to the collection aspect rather than to the quality of the whiskey . I think James Bond would be more connected to the Bowmore distillery collaboration with Aston Martin rather than Macallan

Just been informed by my supplier that this will not be released until 2023 and may well be a Harrods exclusive.... Hope he is wrong.

Hey ✌️ I just bought a nice collectable bottle. I'm wondering on how to store it?? It came in a really nice box and I want to keep the box in good condition. Is there anything I can wrap it in that would keep it good?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Think they missed the boat on the tube , slightly larger box and more of a story and an age statement. After all 600 pounds. Think the money is better placed in buying a CASK.

That’s what Macallan is right now. Selling medium whiksys for high prices by adding an artist or a brand. RIP Macallan. Missing the old ones. Such good drams for small prices. For me Tamdhu is now like old Macallan. 12y old for 35 Pounds tastes delicious. And also for collection Macallan is getting more and more unattractive. Like you said. Who wants one or 2 of the collection. All or nothing and that’s nearly impossible without paying disgusting prices on the second market.

I mean in Asia, if you don't know whisky, you will drink Macalla. If you know whisky, you will probably drink Macallan too to show your social status...

Macallan has kind of "saturated" her own lineup by constantly releasing "limited" releases. It's just not exciting anymore. Technically they can use any whisky in their inventory, label as "limited edition" and voila, an excuse to jack up the msrp for more cash. We've got better choices out there for the similar price range.

Agreed 100% 👍I am not sure about this series. I was really exciting when I heard about it and then when I saw the product 🥴 I do not see it as an investement like some other releases and for sure is too expensive for NAS to drink. I think Macallan missed a great oportunity there, as you said

I think you nailed it in your presentation. Macallan is so market driven these days it often leaves a bitter taste in one’s mouth. Macallan often reminds me of David beckham when he seemed to spend more time modelling clothes and aftershave then playing football back in the day!!!

They are releasing too many NAS bottles . . . not interested to collect or drink them anymore

Macallan seem to be pushing their luck with this sub par release. I won’t be buying it because its higher risk than previous releases value wise. Its a bit like a bubble some Macallan investing and eventually bubbles burst. Macallan doesn’t deserve the custom with this shocking release. Its an insult to the clientele so even though it’s likely to be a good investment I wont support Macallan by lining in there pockets. If enough people followed suit Macallan would have to up the standards.

The James Bond Macallan theme was firmly established in Skyfall when Bond couldn't bring himself to shoot a glass of Macallan 50. What is this nonsense though? We have the poor price/quality ratio Macallan for the suckers that aren't rich but want in on the act and then there's this kind of thing. It probably tastes alright but nobody's buying it to drink of course. "Some good points about these whiskies but mainly about the artwork on them." £600 for a bit of printed scribble stuck on a bottle and tube. Seriously? Cheap marketing flannel. If you really like art buy a decent art book to look at instead of a cardboard tube. Real whisky people don't care about boxes or tubes and Springbank have now disposed of both. Good for them. Seriously though Mark, why do you give Macallan any air time? I appreciate that you occupy a very interesting whisky RU-vid space and I really appreciate that (I have to put my thinking cap on), but Macallan aren't whisky any more. It's just brown liquid in a box and discussed like a market graph. Macallan are desperate to flog nothing stuff to suckers to finance that new distillery bill. This is NAS and a nothing tube flogged at £600. Go ahead suckers; Invest thousands of pounds in brown liquid and pray (you better pray) that an even greater sucker will buy your brown liquid for more than you did. Good advice for the flippers on this but has the bubble burst? I think these bottles should be far cheaper as an investment. £600 is seriously high risk and it's a lot of investment for the lot. I doubt the reputation of this stuff will compensate in the long run. Good if you like cardboard tubes though. Cheers buddy, WT

Just can't connect with the brand. Hard to justify spending the money (as a drinker) and don't feel I can take the risk on bottles this expensivr without the quality. On a side note, the comments about sexism are quite tiresome to me. Women play a big part in the industry, but most whisky fans are men. In my opinion, that's fine. It's no a problem to be fixed. The industry is already open to everyone, we don't need to try shoehorn people in.
