One thing to remember is that the Revolt was not just a war of liberation from the Seleucid overlords: within THAT war was also a civil war but between hellenizing Jews -- who wanted accommodation & acculturation with the Seleucid Empire -- and faithful Jews, who wanted to preserve their faith & culture. Americans can see an analogy with our own Revolutionary War, though the analogy is imperfect, of course. The 13 Colonies eventually sought independence from a larger hegemon, but there were thousands of Loyalists in the Colonies who supported the Crown & took up arms. The Battle of Kings Mountain is perhaps the best-known of these engagements. The point is that -- within larger wars for autonomy -- there were bloody civil wars between neighbors, friends, and families.

If I’m not mistaken, the Catholic and Orthodox canons are the only ones to keep the first two books of the Maccabees 1 and 2. The Protestants removed the Maccabees because they based their biblical canon off the Jewish Masoretic texts that were newer than the Hellenic Septuagint which also didn’t include them. I’m not sure why the Masoretic Bible (or other Jewish texts) doesn’t consider them deuterocanonical but instead apocryphal. Any one know more about the reasoning for this?
@KayramirCF
@KayramirCF 3 года назад
I think it was more of them being conceived on a period when Jewish culture was very hellenistic they were not originally written in Hebrew but in Greek this and other books taken out of the protestant bible are like this. This I think is the reason those Jewish texts didn't have em they just had originally written Hebrew

Maccabees is in the Catholic and Orthodox translations of the Bible, just not the Protestant translations. So when she said that maccabees isn’t in the Bible, that’s not entirely correct. It depends on which translation you read.
@amd9592
@amd9592 Год назад
The story of Maccabees and many apocryphal texts were removed from different denominations like the Protestants versus the Catholic and Orthodox because there was no hebrew text equivalent to be translated from, only Greek. the King James Version for example, would only translate those which had both greek and hebrew text to translate from and many had not print those texts to "save paper" due to the cost of print. The Catholic church includes those chapters as deutorcanonical because they still hold a lot of wisdom Like "Ecclesiasticus"or (the Book of Sirach), and the "Wisdom of Solomon".

Excellent video as are all of the videos in this series and on this channel. I recommend this channel to all my family and friends. One important comment on something stated in the video; the story about the oil lasting 8 days was made up and added later for political reasons. The miracle of Chanukah/Hanukkah was always that G-d enabled the small number of faithful Jews to defeat the vastly superior foreign occupation troops and reclaim their country, religion, and culture. This obviously would not go over well with the large and powerful empires which controlled both the Holy Land and the Diaspora Jewish communities. Therefore Jewish leaders created the story of the oil lasting 8 days as the miracle of Chanukah/Hanukkah. In the Books of the Macabees it says that after the Temple had been recaptured and purified, the 8 day Festival of Succot and Shemini Atzeret had been missed. So the Macabees celebrated that festival as soon as they were able. They also sent out communiques to all the other Jewish communities outside the Holy Land telling them to start celebrating this 8 day holiday as "Succot in Kislev (the Jewish month when Chanukah/Hanukkah is celebrated)." That is why Chanukah/Hanukkah is celebrated for 8 days. For further proof of what the true miracle of Chanukah/Hanukkah was, the blessings made while lighting the Chanukah/Hanukkah lights and the prayer "Al HaNissim ("On the Miracles)" all refer to the battles and victories of the Macabees and the reclaimation and purification of the Holy Temple, but there is no mention of the miracle of a single vial of oil lasting for 8 days. If that would have been one of the miracles, don't you think it would have been mentioned there?
@rodneyhorrell
@rodneyhorrell 3 года назад
Thank you for great presentation of the Bible's 'silent years'. Some other points I would like to add is that God actually protected the Temple when Onias was High Priest and a general tried to rob the 'tithe' monies and the Jewish people cried to God for help and 3 angels appeared as the general tried to rob the temple and they resisted him and whipped him to an inch of his life. So the general never tried that again. The reason why the angel's, who had restrained thieves and ultimately 'gentile' desecration of the temple, didn't restrain Antiochus when he showed up is because Onias' brother Jason bribed Antiochus IV with money for the position of High Priest and 'apostate' the whole priesthood and followed the ways of the Greeks. This is why God never defended the Temple when the abomination of desolation was set up. This pattern is also mentioned by Paul the Apostle in 2 Thessalonians 2 as it will again play out in a similar manner when the 'antichrist' appears and is defeated by the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Also references: Matt 24, Mark 13 verses.

"Moussaka and lamb shank"? A very cheap and unbecoming shot. Surely you jest, young lady. Philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, city planning, beautiful architecture, theater, art, music, and dance are but a few of the "things" Hellenism brought to Judea. The Greeks did not emphasize the physical over the spiritual as you say. Quite the contrary. They believed in balance in everything. After all, it was the Greeks who prescribed that a healthy mind should occupy a healthy body. I can see that your reluctance to exercise has brought you to your rolly-polly state of bliss. So enamored were the youth of Judea with the freedom of thought and discourse and the intellectual progress of Hellenism when compared to the conservative darkness of their own culture, that the very existence of Judaism itself came under danger of being supplanted by Hellenism by voluntary means. Yes, the revolt was a worthy fight over an occupier, and the victory amazing. Mazeltov on the victory of one mental illness over another, which is what all religion truly is - mental illness. Mazeltov, indeed.

10:35 Alexandra is a Greek name, the Hellenistic influence remains.
@mords2
@mords2 3 года назад
The name Alexander was Judaized during the reign of Alexander the Great. During a visit, the high priest Simon promised Alexander the Great that all children born to the priestly families that year will be named Alexander. As Jews have a custom to name children after deceased parentage we still have the name in use as a Jewish name to this date

Interestingly this holiday isn't one commanded by the Most High in scripture. It's more a cultural tradition rather than a direct commandments by Yah.

@@manofvision No, 'the most High' commands the Jews to listen to their elders. Their elders saw the miracle that 'the most High' performed for them, and so they instituted this holiday. In reality, however, it is a minor holiday in Judaism.

Also the HIGH priest was supposed to be descended from a specific Levite, Tzadok since the tome of Solomon. By the decree of God: Ezekiel 44:15 But the priests the Levites, the sons of Zadok, that kept the charge of my sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from me, they shall come near to me to minister unto me, and they shall stand before me to offer unto me the fat and the blood, saith the Lord GOD:

Absolutely. The Hasmonean ruler Yehonatan, Yehudah's brother, should have brought a scion of the Zadokites back from Egypt and anointed him High Priest. Yehonatan made a huge mistake, to put it mildly, in omitting to do so.

The world's greatest army and empire? of the ancient world? by that time I doubt it, the Seleucids were in decline and were constantly humiliated by the Parthians and the Romans. Anyway, gaining independence was a feat worthy of recognition for a small nation.

Hannukah wasn't established as a holiday for years after the events because of the Hellenists. It was considered a tragedy that Jew had to fight Jew.
