THE MAD BOMBER | Daryle Lamonica | Raiders History
In 1963, Daryle Lamonica was chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 24th round of the AFL draft. In his rookie year, he saw the field only a few times, substituting for the Bills' starting quarterback, Jack Kemp, after injuries or ineffectiveness, earning the nickname "the Fireman." For four years, Lamonica patiently waited to become the Bills' starting quarterback, but that opportunity never came. During this period, Jack Kemp led the Bills to three consecutive AFL Eastern Division titles and two AFL championships.
It was only when the Raiders, a team composed of cast-off and misfit players from other teams, gave him a chance that Lamonica found his place and recognition, becoming a Raiders legend. Daryle Lamonica led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl and established himself as one of the greatest athletes in the history of the AFL and later the NFL.

My best friends dad was friends with Daryl and he and his brother got to go fishing with him when he was still qb'ing the Raiders. Clovis High's football stadium is named in his honor. It's always great watching videos that are world wide mentioning your hometown. Clovis was a great place to grow up in the '60s and watching Daryl Lamonica play for the Oakland Raiders on Sundays was icing on the cake. RIP Daryl RIP James

I'm old enough to have watched these guys play. I think the "Mad Bomber" could have been one of the Greats. Times were different back then. The regular season was 12 games long. He was sandwiched between George Blanda and Kenny "The Snake" Stabler. The passing game was not like today, the running game was where the emphasis was put, the pass was used to keep the defense" honest." The money was in the dirt, good but not great like after the NFLPA was formed. Most of the pro's had an off-season job selling cars or sweeping out trailers for trucking companies. Daryle had a 75% win rate when he played and that speaks volumes when winning is the only thing that counts. Great video!

Even though I lived in Buffalo, it was Darryl Lamonica I would always impersonate as a quarterback vs Jack Kemp of the Bills when all us kids from our neighborhood got together to play our weekly football games, and now as an adult I'm a die hard hard Bills fan! .

I went to your site looking for a video on Otis Sistrunk, from the "University of Mars" and didn't find one. Surely you must have a video about Otis in the works! Now there's a real interesting story waiting to be made about that guy! Thanks for the videos, they bring me back to when pro Football had some real characters, and I watched them all from the mid '60's on to today.

I really don't have an option on who was better (Daryl Lamonica or Ken Stabler) but I do remember the old man (George Blanda) who I believe was the 3rd string QB under Daryl Lamonica. George Blanda was also the main field goal kicker and retired at the age of 48 I believe. Although I do agree that Daryl Lamonica belongs in the NFL hall of fame.

I had the privilege of meeting Daryl Lamonica about ten years ago. He was visiting residents in a nursing home about 30 miles south of Fresno. As I remember it, the Raiders beat K.C. in a playoff to determine the winner of the West in 1969, then, after they both defeated Eastern division opponents, Lamonica injured his hand during the Championship game. He came back and played, but not well. I read a few years ago that Lamonica still holds the all-time record for best home-field winning percentage for a quarterback.

I actually had to tell Al Davis that Lamonica was not going to sign his new contract that was going to pay him 18.5 K per year. I was an assistant to Ron Wolf at the Raiders training camp in Santa Rosa at that time. The team and staff had left to play the Niners at the old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco on Sunday. Lamonica told me to contact Davis and tell him without a new contract he was not going to play in that game. I finally got a hold of Davis and told him what was going on. He simply said bring the old contract to the dressing room at the Stadium and he would take care of it. I did what I was told and in the end Lamonica signed, played in the game.

Unless you are talking about me when I was about twelve, I've never met a single person who would rate Lamonica over Stabler. Number three was a huge threat, with a great arm, who could beat man coverage on a wide-open field, but zone defense was his nemesis. Snake had the mind, the accuracy, and the coolness to always be at his best when the game was on the line. There was never any thought of The Raiders pulling him when the team was behind. As a kid, I actually enjoyed the team being behind entering the 4th quarter because I knew that Kenny would be there to put another game in the win column once the game was decided. More often than not it worked out just that way.

Lamonica was handcuffed at Notre Dame. Coach Joe Kuharich ran a run-oriented offense. It wasn't until the East-West Shrine game his senior year that his passing ability was unleashed. Ironically, Lamonica's coach for that game was Ara Parseghian, then at Northwestern. He simply told Daryl to move the ball downfield and score. Lamonica did just that.

If I had to win one game I would want Ken Stabler, Lamonica had more physical talent than Stabler and if it were not for Joe Namath Lamonica would have been the best QB in the AFL and some argue that he was. Joe Namath said that.

You asked whom is the best Raiders QB btwn Mad Bomber and Snake Stabler:: Jim Plunkett would be my answer for that. This coming from a Steeler Fan since 72. We had some great rivalry with those 70s Raiders teams. Ive always respected the Raiders.

Lamonica was a classic QB, the prototype for all QBs Al Davis liked to draft. Ironically, the Raiders' best QB, Kenny Stabler, did not fit in that mold that Al Davis preferred in his passers. I think Jim Plunkett, who came back from a tough career up to that point in New England and San Francisco, also deserves some consideration as a great Raiders QB, having led the team to 2 Super Bowls wins.

I hate that, to this day, the prejudiced institutional NFL STILL dismisses far too many of the great AFL players for the Hall of Fame. Eventually they deigned to "let in" a few "token" AFL players (how generous of the NFL sportswriters -- sarcasm), but NOWHERE NEAR AS MANY former AFL stars are enshrined in the HoF as OUGHT to be there. LOTS of 1960s-era NFL players who made the HoF were in truth NO BETTER than the comparable AFL players who were intentionally bypassed.

As a Dolphins fan I say Stabler edges Lamonica because of the 1974 sea of hands playoff game that ended my team's Super Bowl reign even though Lamonica defeated Miami in the mud 1970 playoff game and ended the Dolphins 18 game winning streak in 1973 at Berkeley.

Lamonica had trouble reading zone defenses, Stabler didn't. Stabler is the greatest Raider QB of all time. I would say Jim Plunkett would be next he led the Raiders to 2 Super Bowl victories.

lt seems to me that quarterbacks in the NFL threw more interceptions in the 1960s and the 1970s than the quarterbacks in the modern era.

Yeah, the amount of pressure on the quarterbacks and receivers was intense. Very little protection was afforded by the rules of the day. That, and the fact that they threw the ball down the field rather than just dumping most of their passes to backs and receivers running very short and underneath routes.

There was no pass interference that came into being after drew Pearson pushed Nate right down in nfc title game on a pass where Roger Staubach first coined term “ Hail Mary” pass. Following after that 1977 postseason pass interference was introduced suddenly interceptions for quarterbacks decreased and yds increased. Coincidence? 🤔

The size of the offensive line was smaller than todays guys. They allowed the head slap back then too. Completion percentage was as much as 10% lower than today’s top QBs. They ran the ball more. That’s why the Middle linebacker was more important back then.

YES and NO @ChristopherMosley. "Fleeced" is the wrong word -- because it implies that the Buffalo Bills were "clueless," had "the wool pulled over their eyes," and were "bamboozled" into making a "bad trade." Oakland definitely got the better of the "player swap" -- no doubt about that, especially where the QBs were concerned. Tom Flores had a good football mind, as would be apparent when he led the Raiders to two Super Bowl wins (vs. Philadelphia and Washington) ... but as a washed-up QB in his early 30s, by then he was "at best" a back-up who would only play if the starter got injured. Lamonica, by contrast, was in his prime and ready to take off. Al Davis coveted Lamonica. So it would be accurate to say that Oakland "won" the trade from the standpoint of "player value" exchanged. It was NOT a "fleecing" however, because the Bills knew what they were doing, and executed the trade intentionally. You have to remember the times AND the unique operative facts surrounding the two respective teams that drove the dynamic. As for "the times," one has to remember and recognize that, in early 1967 when the trade was made right after the conclusion of the 1966 season, pro football was NOT YET an enterprise that existed "PRIMARILY" to be a "big bucks" business above all else (as it is too often in the present day). The owners (especially a guy like the Bills' owner Ralph C. Wilson -- a member of "The Foolish Club" of the 8 original AFL owners) were TRUE "SPORTSMEN" -- they were happy enough to make a profit, but profit was not the be-all, end-all and they were perfectly content simply to "not lose too much money" from year-to-year owning the team. Owners also LIKED and RESPECTED their players, and they tried to "do right by them" whenever they could. This leads us to a discussion of the operative facts associated with each team: 1. Following the 1966 season, it was clear that the Bills were a former championship team in decline and rapidly ageing. They needed to be re-tooled before they could be competitive again. The Bills had just completed a great run of appearing in 3 consecutive AFL Championship games (winning the AFL Title in 1964 and 1965, but losing badly at home to the KC Chiefs in 1966; had Buffalo won that game, THEY would have played Green Bay in Super Bowl I). The Bills had also lost their championship coach -- Lou Saban -- who quit after the second Bills AFL Championship following the 1965 season. Meanwhile, by contrast, the Raiders -- once a sad-sack team -- was now chock-full of young, cultivated talent and primed to contend for championships -- they were definitely a team on the rise. 2. Jack Kemp was entrenched as the Bills starting QB, and Ralph Wilson was loyal to him for winning two AFL Titles for the Bills. Besides, Jack Kemp ALSO had a terrific "Mad Bomber" arm as good as Lamonica's -- so Kemp was going to remain the starter (Bill Belichick's knack for getting rid of ageing star players before they tank was certainly NOT the way pro football was done in the 1960s). Although Lamonica was a terrific young QB entering his prime, Wilson did NOT want a "QB Controversy" on the team. Yet, because Wilson was loyal to Lamonica as well, he wanted to do a "solid" for Daryle by sending him to a great young team on the rise that lacked only a terrific QB. The added bonus to this tremendous opportunity Ralph Wilson was giving Lamonica rater than selfishly clinging to him and making is remain a back-up (back then, there was NO "free agency" and thus Lamonica would NEVER have the right to play out his Bills' contract and then go wherever he wanted) was that he was sending Lamonica "home" -- Lamonica grew up in Fresno and Clovis, both relatively close to Oakland. 3. Ralph Wilson was also tight with money ... he WASN'T going to pay "top dollar" to TWO starting-caliber QBs on thesame team. 4. Ralph Wilson was a good friend of Al Davis -- they were AFL owner-management warriors who had successfully survived the NFL's war against the AFL for the AFL's continued existence, so Ralph Wilson was happy to pass the torch of excellence to his buddy until the Bills could re-group. 5. At one time, Ralph Wilson briefly had a small [and illegal] "minor ownership stake" in the Raiders earlier in the AFL's history -- Wilson was happy to see the Raiders do well ... even after the loan had been paid off .

Knock on Stabler was he had weak arm w/that sidearm throwing style plus his bad knees made em statue when he got older. Gota like someone who throws bombs all day n stretches a defense. Lamonica had his time. Think Rich Gannon has had best season stats for Raider QB ever. Don't kno much bout Tom Flores' QB days but believe he never got respect he deserved as HC winning 2SBs.

Kenny Stabler was their greatest QB, Superbowl has a lot to do with that. Plus, I believe Kenny could read the field better (as what I heard) however ....take your pick for second Plunkett or Lamonica, then again Plunkett has 2 SBs. However, his career with the Raiders he was injured a lot.

He won his semi-finals and the AFL 1967 championship. He jammed his thumb against the Chiefs which is probably the reason for his three interceptions in the 1969 AFL championship. He had a costly interception against Lombardi’s Packers, but he also threw two touchdown passes in Super Bowl II. From 1967-1969 he was a great quarterback that helped establish the AFL as a legitimate league.

He had an overall playoff record of 4-5 as a starting QB, but was hurt by some bad circumstances: 1968 AFL title game, a questionable coaching call (passing up a FG opportunity in the 4th quarter) and a critical mental error by a teammate (failing to fall on a missed lateral); 1969 AFL title game, an early injury to his throwing hand which left him inaccurate; 1972 AFC divisional playoff, the Raiders 'D' failing to finish off the final play in allowing the 'immaculate reception.' His first postseason loss was in Super Bowl II, the next three were to teams which ended up winning the Super Bowl that season.
