fantastic attack from Tal, with the same themes as the magnus and Boris games, illuminating anlysis. It is worth noting that Magnus has produced strategical masterpieces with both sides of the Breyer. thanks Daniel and keep up the good work.

As you build your channel up, keep this in mind. I follow several chess channels, wherein the commentator tells me every piece moved from the beginning, e4, e5, nf3 etc. What your doing, starting the game in the background with some story in the foreground is much more engaging. I shouldn't feel as if the person presenting the game is reading it off the pgn in Stockfish. And stories about the players, fleshing them out into 3D is great as well.

Tal and engines sac and then sac some more. On the opposite, me and other patzers see 4 times guarded e4, so move Pe4-e5 instantly goes to list of eliminated moves, which we have instead of list of candidates. "Bizarre blunder of tempo and material" ;)

Dear Mr. King, I just subscribed, feeling somewhat guilty that I haven't done so before. I sent your channel a little money over the years, but I'm basically just a poor chess bum and can't afford much. I think it's a travesty that you haven't reached 100k subscribers yet, as I imagine it would afford you more income. (Not sure how the system works.) You're doing such invaluable work, especially in these trying times. So I guess I just want to say thank you. And I'd encourage EVERYONE to support this channel to the best of their abilities. It's hands-down the best chess channel on RU-vid, and it can be a real life-saver if chess is your passion and you're stuck at home. Sorry for getting so sentimental, but I just realized how often I've visited this channel and how much emotional and intellectual value I've gotten out of it. Surely the best loved chess player of all time due to his slashing attacks! Even more amazing how creative he was considering his serious medical issues for much of his life.He even discharged himself from hospital near the end of his life to play in a chess tournament and did pretty well!

poor gyula breyer. great results in early 1920-s. Dead of heart problems at age 28. hope he enjoyed every minute of his short life. the hypermodern movement is absolutely fascinating to me.

While the knight sacrifice on h5 is a very nice move in deed, the perhaps better move was Sf5! After Nxh5 Black shouldn‘t take the knight on h5 but instead play ..f6. Of course white has the advantage then and must win but Sf5! seems clearer.

Brilliant game. I never liked Spanish as black, I just did not understand how to be active and obviously as an amateur, playing for a draw as black is ridiculous. During this game I felt that Black should have pushed those queenside pawns somehow. I had a game in a tournament few years ago and I played Spanish there as black. All I could think of was to just smash the opponent with my queenside pawns and ended up winning the game. My opponent won the tournament with a stupid tiebreak rule though, he had more consecutive wins. But ya, that was my only Spanish as Black in a competitive classical game. :D

Qd1! instead of Bd1! this time! :) All these crushing wins for White makes me wonder why Black bothers with the Breyer when he could play the Philidor and save a couple of tempii on Nbd7 in one move and not weakening the q-side with a6+b5. Still a bit passive, but it seems more solid...

I don't think one could ever say who were the greatest experts in the Ruy Lopez. Kasparov, Fischer, Karpov, Carlsen, Anand...that's a starting point!

This is a question for anyone who reads this: If a player really wants to improve should that player study master games that were before a certain era. For example should a player really be looking at Morphy, Anderssen or even Marshall games? What is the cut off if there is one?

For me, it's more a question of how good the commentary is. Any well annotated master game is helpful, but there is a certain shortage of those, as far as I'm concerned. That's one of the reasons this chanel is so great!

Is Tal's rating correct? 2705 in 1980 seems kinda high. I always assumed Karpov to be the only one to be over 2700 in those days. Moreover Korchnoi would have to be no 2 in the world and I'm fairly certain he never was over 2700.

Apparently this rating is correct. In 1979 he had won the super tournament in Montreal and the Riga Interzonal tournament with 14/17...!

I actually found the rating list of 1980: Indeed I was right regarding Korchnoi in that he never was over 2700, but Tal overtook him as no. 2 in the world. fidelists.blogspot.com/2008/02/january-1980-fide-rating-list.html?m=0

This game is a good example of why I never felt comfortable playing e5 and especially closed Spanish with Black - passive but solid, without space and would love to play it as White because he has all the fun in the world and what Black has in return is the queenside but really I don't feel it.

The key move for me as black is getting Bg4 pinning the knight to the queen. If I can get it in it makes all the difference in my games. White can't play h3 g4 to push it away because it's too weakening. The bishop either ties down the white queen or the queenside knight to defend the pinned knight. Even if white wriggles out of the pin long term you have both bishops protecting your king.

@@achronos999able i believe most people consider that an inaccuracy. Bg4 should only be played if d4 is played by white. Otherwise, white plays d3, shuffles the knight over to g3 and then pushes the bishop back before playing d4. He gets to do the same thing but your light squared bishop isn't really accomplishing anything now

What a massacre. The position after e5 from White speaks for itself. All of Whites pieces are pointing towards the black King. Playing this variation against Tal seems to me like suicide.
