The Magnificent Anders(s)ons - The Look of Reality

Because Roy and Wes Anderson's aesthetics are so jarringly different from most films, they take precedence in so many of the conversations about their work. Instead, I wanted to talk about how those different styles of exaggeration and artificiality are actually utilised to convey ideas that conventional aesthetics can’t.

Amazing to see Roy Andersson's work getting the recognition it deserves, his work is truly astonishingly beautiful and honest whilst at the same time being uniquely stylized, but let's not forget there are not two, but three great Andersons working in film right now. He may not be as visually distinctive, but P.T. also understands how to manipulate the film medium to very powerful effect. If I had to name my three favorite working directors I would need only one surname to cover the bunch. Long live the Andersons.

Being a film scholar, I must say that this is probably one of the best works of film studies I have seen in ages. Lost in scholarly limbo, most modern scholarship only aids the writer to sustain their work. But this study has far more practical potential and therefore isn't merely a means to an end.

Nice touch to have "the left side" only appear in my left earcup, and "the right side" in my right. Never heard of Roy Anderson before, but I love the aesthetic of what you're showing us here! Also, I'm Norwegian, so I can understand his movies without closed captions :D

I put that one in for the ear bud aficionados out there! And you're lucky. No matter how much I try, I always feel I'm losing something when I can't understand the language. Watching the documentaries about the making of Songs from the Second Floor and You, The Living, I learned how much I was missing. In a few scenes Roy is directing his actors to change their inflection and I realized I missed most of those nuances.

Excellent analysis! One of the best film essays I have seen in video form on RU-vid. Roy Andersson's line producer told me about this (I work for Roy on his upcoming film "About Endlessness"). I decided to take a look at the video once I got home, and wow, you managed to go in full detail here. I think everyone working on Roy's film including the director himself appreciated this video.
@TheAtoZReviewBlog

That's great to hear! Do you know if by any chance Roy saw the video? If he hated (or loved it), that'd go right on my CV! I was actually talking to Alba Lange regarding a new video essay, solely about Roy and in more depth, to go along or close to the release of "About Endlessness", but the project was put on hold until at least next year. When I talk to Studio24 again, I hope I can tell them I have the support of Icebears4ever.

I hope the humour in Roy's movies gets through even to non-Swedish speakers. I recon his films to be very centered on experiences of growing up in Sweden, i.e. how people talked, how people behaved etc, but presented in an extreme way.

Roy Andersson is one of my favorite filmmakers. En kärlekshistoria, Sånger från andra våningen, Du levande and his short movies Härlig är jorden and Någonting har hänt are all amazing. En kärlekshistoria does have a totally different style though. Compared to the other ones. Wes and Roy, two real artists.

i think you nailed roy andersson's style quite well when you said it's your own mind that does the editor's work, how you can decide for yourself on where your attention takes you. and how that turns you from a passive observer into an active one. i haven't thought of it that way before.

I love Roy and Wes Anderson so much! I recently found out about Roy Anderson through his film "A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Contemplating it's Existence" and I fell in love. I wanted to see his other films but I could not find them any where. i tried to buy them but I needed a Swedish DVD player to watch them.

I like what you're doing here, but I'm pretty sure Wes only read Stefan Zweig for the first time circa 2010.
@TheAtoZReviewBlog
@TheAtoZReviewBlog 7 лет назад
Yes, I think so too. I really didn't delve into it, because if I focused in too much depth in a lot of things, the video would last for hours. But I think they both have a very particular and very similar way to look at the past. When he started reading Zweig, he just further developed that way of looking back and the story arch in Zweig's writings, with a character telling another character his/her story was the perfect devise for him to go all out on his aesthetics.
