if any of you guys are listening for the first time, YES this has an overarching story with reoccurring characters. it doesn't initially seem like it, but it very much is. and jon isn't narrating the whole time either, you will hear other voices eventually. this podcast is a great slowburn with a carefully plotted story, it's really astounding how well they planned it out. its a big investment to get into but very worth it!
The beginning of this podcast is giving me “person hired to do a job, that wasn’t previously informed that everything was a mess, and then got super annoyed when they showed up and realized how much shit they’d have to clean up” vibes.
damn, the anglerfish thought is scary. usually in horror stories, what you see is what you get - but this terrifying humanoid creature is a BAIT for an ever MORE terrifying creature.
@@Hades-wf5bk please do I'dlike to hear your thoughts. I'm also new to this podcast but I'm already much farther ahead. Just doing a little recap before I get into the final season
I'm glad to be relistening to this series *yet again*, this one in particular is a really clever hook into the series.... the Anglerfish, a luring statement that has literally lured people into the series, how amusing
Very true. Quite ironic actually, isn't it, that the first glimpse into this story is about something luring others to their - supposed - demise and that is the hook that the series came up with.
Apparently the most recent episodes deal strongly with ideas of contagion, viruses and feeling trapped. So be careful. I just started the show though so it'll be a while before I get to that point
Remember when this was the scariest thing ever? When you first listen to this episode? Things were so much more simple then. No pain. No sadness. Just the Anglerfish, no context. Gosh this podcast broke me. Update: I just reached 200 and.. well I guess I deserved that after writing this comment.
Fucking exactly, I don’t know how but I think I actually already KNOW the story he’s telling in this one, and I guess that alone is gonna be enough to drag me into this.
Well tumblr...let's see what the hell you keep going on about. Edit: Ok it was worth the hype holy hell. I'm at season two and it is amazing. Edit 2: ...season five man...season five. It's broken me stg--
I would like to raise a toast in the name of my extremely based Slovak teacher for allowing me to watch as much of this podcast as i want and call it homework.
THIS IS DEFINITLEY NOT THE BEST THING TO LISTEN TO FOR THE FIRST TIME AT NIGHT ESPECAILLY IF YOU GET SPOOKED EASILY OH BOY I'm still listening though because now I'm hooked
Me *listening at the middle of the night*: Hun? What do you mean? Also Me: Pretty Moon and Stars... OoO (Lol I really just really love the night and I'm not scared of it at all)
@@nooneimportant7736 Honestly, yeah it is! It's a well written story, with genuinely disturbing horror, well built characters (with natural character development/progression), and just some genuinely nice atmosphere over all.
As a Mechanisms fan listening to this for the first time- my first thought upon hearing Jon’s narration is “omg it’s Jonny Dville” and I don’t think I’m going to escape that mental image
just double checking that this isn't just a very coincidental mental connection where you went "oh damn they sound similar", and you _are_ aware his voice actor is the same jonny sims 👉👉 (because if it _is_ just a coincidental mental connection, that is a cool thing you should be aware of)
*[shakily gathers up heart scattered broken on the floor]* *[it still has cracks on it]* Alright, I think I'm emotionally prepared for a relisten now... I say, as I try to ignore the dread at relistening to scenes that would leave me sobbing and wanting give these people (especially Jon) a goddamn hug
This series changed a lot from here to now. We know what the Anglerfish was. We know what happened to that woman who took the photo. Jon’s changed a lot since. God, it’s so weird to look back now.
Pls tell me what the Anglerfish is. I'm kind of dumb. Also the "Vampires" that appear later. Spoilers The Lonely Maybe?? Since they disappear/don't show up in pictures. Idk.
@@ZeroOhClock spoilers!! . . . . . . . The vampires are creatures/monsters of the hunt, they also appear when that Amazon explorer was lost in the jungle. The anglerfish is a monster of the stranger, it lures people in with the body of previous creatures, skinning them and storing their skinless bodies for the Stranger's ritual. The skinned bodies are sent to the Hunting Trophy room place to be stuffed and turned into servants of the stranger.
Re listening to this and hearing Jon bully martin is more upsetting than it was at first because knowing what happens in season 4 and knowing how much Jon will miss martin is a curse
@@themoribundapathetic4530 My second one was Welcome to Night Vale. It's similar enough, but has a totally different tone and mood, and is good to relax to after TMA.
I've been seeing this on Tik Tok a bunch so I decided to check it out and I can already tell that this is going to be a hyperfixation until I run out out of content to consume
Okay, found this through 90% of Tumblr and honestly it's creepy. I'm at Edinburgh Uni too and I know most of the places in this setting. It's actually eerie and knowing Edinburgh, could happen ngl
as someone who very unfortunately lives in america, yeah i can see all the american bits actually happening "werewolf" hunting trip? yeah okay, pretty sure that happened to a guy in my hometown too /j
My very favorite podcast, would heavily recommend it to anyone who enjoys horror. If you're getting into this for the first time, strap in, it only gets better from here!
I AM SO EXCITED I haven't been able to do get into any podcasts but I'm giving this a shot because it sounds similar tp my favorite book series "The Monstrumologist" with, you know, interesting creatures!
I love horror and I never heard of this before. I'm here because of Overly Sarcastic Productions. This first episode is very intriguing, especially because I have absolutely no idea where this is going and that's rare for me these days. I'm very excited!
@@bud521 I've finished Season 1 yesterday and holy shit I did not expect that at all. I thought this was going to be just a snarky british guy reading some creepy but unrelated stories. Seldom was I so happy to be so incredibly wrong.
@@DerMoerpler Right???? I was speechless during the last few epsiodes of s1 and from what I've seen about the next few seasons, it only gets better! I'm in the middle of S2 right now and it's still really good
For some reason, someone in my Tumblr feed became enamored with this series and I keep seeing the name pop up. I was curious about it and looked it up, but I never really looked into it because I didn't think I'd like listening to someone read. I saw it again today, and after watching someone read some Weird Tales on their channel, I figured "Why the hell not?".
one of my friends who’s on tumblr (im not active on there) recommended this to me because she knows i’m into dark/cryptid/gothic/eldritch horror. i guess someone on there found it and it exploded
im halfway through season 5 and.... gosh... everything hits so different when you finally understand it all... Edit: just finished mag 200...... i am not ok
Starting my second trip through this series. If you're just starting off, buckle up, it's going to be an incredible journey. If you're also making a second journey, remember not to spoil it for anyone else.
Omg for a second I thought that said “Worm Lady Gaga” and I didn’t even question it. 😆 I was like, “that’s an interesting way to describe Jane, but I suppose it’s not wholly inaccurate.” lol
I started watching this because of Overly Sarcastic Productions and I do not regret listening to it late at night when everyone else was asleep, just kidding yes I do I feel like I'm being watched
Just returned to comment on the 1st episode after finishing episode 120. Johnny sounds so different in this episode! I still consider it to be one of the best, though. If you're reading this having only listened to this one, definitely keep going. It's worth it.
to those just starting the magnus archives now: it's really amazing to go back to episode one and see just how far everything has come since then. you know so much looking back on it, and the characters have all developed so, so much since the beginning. it's so nice to go back to. enjoy the journey!!!!! it only gets better from here!
OH MY GOD. this podcast is amazing. i just spent the last two weeks binging the whole thing, now i’m caught up. if you’re a new listener and you’re on the fence, just know that this podcast is intricately plotted and it all comes together so well. just keep listening, you won’t regret it!
Back at the beginning after listening to the finale. Hoo boy. 🤭🥺 No spoilers for all you first time listeners, but y’all are in for a RIDE, my friends. Godspeed. Now I can start my journey over again for like the fifth or sixth time so I can see ALL THE FORESHADOWING!!!! 🤩
Starting back through these for the first time since doing the whole series, and hearing that little bit of audio distortion on "Can I have a cigarette?" is just... sent the smallest of chills down my spine.
I decided to come back and listen to this whole thing again and wow. Coming back to the first episode, where things were so much simpler, really brings me back. I expected a lot of spooky tales told by a serious but skeptical narrator, I could never have expected what we actually got. So excited to go back through this masterpiece again knowing what I do now!
oh ho ho! coming back to take proper notes, oh man is this is amazing. I'm normally pretty squicked out by most horror but TMA is just pulling me in. Just finished season one, coming back to take notes so I can go into season 2 armed with pages of bullet pointed events, lists of names, timelines, family trees ect. I knew a bit about the characters going in but nothing about the lore and there's really no feeling quite as satasfying and addictive as going back and finding where I know the name Sarah Baldwin from.
And then there's those of us who are coming back to take proper notes after listening to the season 5 finale. I won't spoil anything but like, prepare for much feels, this is a damn good podcast which has broken my heart many many times and completely changed my life despite just being a horror podcast or whatever, and I don't even /like/ horror lmao Edit: And you should probably avoid the comment section, there's a lot of spoilers lol
I came here for all of the creative artists talking about it, it's very promising but I lost my mind when I heard "Johnathan Sims" I 200% was convinced he said "Jonathan Sins"
I came here because the episode "We all ignore the pit" became viral on TikTok, decided to listen to the podcast from the very beginning because goddammit, stories like this are my jam!
I actually had the hardest time getting into The Magnus Archives. I kept starting, then starting over. But once I started noticing the reoccurring characters/ very creepy tbh background activity, I got hooked. I even started keeping my own notes, with names and details whenever I noticed something “off.” I have a hard time listening to podcasts, could never focus/pay attention to audio so I gave up for the first season and instead read the transcripts. I loved it, the entire first season was GOOD. I’m starting to see the bigger picture and how all these stories connect. Now I’m going back to actually listen to the podcasts. Promise not to spoil anything for new listeners, other than that the entire journey is worth it.
I finished ep 160 just two days ago and I already can't wait for april... So let's go, it's time for round two! This series has incredible replayability ^^
Nice to see a fellow archivist organization determined to study anomalies that we at the foundation can ally ourselves with. And, funnily enough, also uses creative commons.
Just discovered this and am excited to keep listening but OH MY GOD! I live in Edinburgh, along dalkeith road, and now I have the heebiest of jeebies. Horror podcast indeed.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep edit: I'm literally attempting a way too in-depth analysis of the whole podcast, seriously I have multiple documents absolutely covered in rainbow text because color coding is rly flippin difficult and I can't even read half of this XD
i promise you the magnus archives along with welcome to nightvale stand at the very top of their categories, i actually think Anglerfish is the best first episode of a podcast i've listened to in years. Totally hooked me in right away. you wont regret listening to this whole thing, it's a game changer
80% of the people I follow on tumblr won't stop posting about the show. Finally giving it a go, never listened actively to a podcast before for anything other than white noise, not a horror fan. Love it. The overly happy Animal Crossing music in the background from my abandoned game offsets the fear quite strangely.
The Magnus Protocol is out now, but I'm waiting for at least the first season to be out so I can binge listen. In the meantime, here I am re-listening to Archives again. That creepy violin music at the beginning is so reassuring. Like saying Hello to an old friend
Officially starting my third listen-through of TMA; I started and finished it for the first time earlier this year, and it never gets old. Well done, RQ 👏 Edit (07/04/2024): Fourth now-
This is my first time listening to this podcast and HOLY HELL this is so good, when mr watts described the figure not moving its lips, i knew that it was just a dummy, bait for the real monster lurking behind to use. This is so bloody good and i am going to listen to it all!!!
Starting my 3rd go of the series cuz protocol is only on episode 10 and i need my fix. Only now do i hear the repetition of "The Stranger"... the top tier writing is just as appreciated the 3rd time round as it was the first. Hats off, bravo!
I’m usually not one for podcasts but this one had been recommended so much and for all the right reasons. The chills it gave me? The way everything is worded? I’m in love
I finished ep 200 about an hour ago. I MUST listen again, from the beginning, because the clues throughout comprise some of the best world-building and plot-weaving I have EVER seen. If I had to guess, I'd say Jonathan Sims (the author, not the character) just might belong the Web.
There's so many of these kinds if things on the internet nowadays, its difficult to nail the subtleties in writing, acting, world buidling and atmosphere and this is so good. Just feeling like you're getting a peek into a real world is so great
Ah yes, episode 1. Back when I listened to a few episodes a night to fall asleep to. Before I obsessively listened to the entire 5 season in more or less one go and I was left a mess, craving for more. Since there is not yet more - or rather the rest - I have resorted to fanfictions and starting from the beginning. Maybe this time I won't miss so many details since my memory is absolute shit
I am very very late but this was recommended to me by people who listen to Welcome to Night Vale, and by recommended I mean you can't mention WTNV without someone saying "well if you like that -" so here I am. This is my second podcast ever and I'm excited, so here we go.
I found this series because of a friendship bracelet website, of all things, because there was a pattern that intrigued and led me here. Years later and I'm so glad I've found it, and it's time for another go-around. So excited for what the future holds!
Am I restarting this at the beginning to even though I am on episode 180 to advoid the end until I am emonally ready? Yes yes I am and i regret nothing
