Ok, so I guess a lot of you runners will find this post interesting.
have you ever felt that throbbing pain on the front of your shin after a long run?
Yes, we have all been there. What I want to tell you, is that this might not be shin splints.
See, when it comes to the injury itself, there is a muscle that is quite hidden, that is the main perpetrator.
Have you ever heard of the tibialis posterior?
Let me explain a bit more about it.
The posterior tibialis is a muscle that attaches on the back of the tibia, hence its name - posterior tibialis.
Unlike it’s antagonist on the front of the tibia (anterior tibialis) the posterior tib is not visible, BUT this does not stop it from getting the same and even more amount of pressure going through it, when you are running, especially on firm surface.
See, the anterior tibialis gets really pumped with blood, most of you have probably felt that when you are walking fast if you are late.
But the same will happen to the posterior tibialis, as it is a muscle responsible for plantar flexion. It is the muscles that gets hit with the tension that is created when your toes hit the floor and you push yourself forward in order to take another step.
The anterior tibialis simply lifts your toes up, there is no direct impact on that tissue, whereas the posterior tibialis is under a lot of pressure. Especially its tendon, which would then transfer the tension up into the muscle tissue.
