In this SKOA video, Sam and his son Harry complete a half day tramp to check out the wonder that is the Maitai Cave.
This cave can be accessed from the Coppermine Track near the Maitai Dam which is approximately 15 minutes or 10km east from Nelson.
Once you leave the Coppermine Trail and enter the Schlanders Creek area, you will be subject to a rougher track and more enclosed beech forest following a clear creek but at a gentle gradient. The Cave is well signposted and is reached following a short climb up the track from the creek bed.
The cave is relatively small and is accessed by entering a small crawl space. It is necessary to take good lighting as it is very dark inside the cave and there are fall hazards if you don't exercise caution. The cave surface is wet and muddy in places as well so you might want to consider bringing a change in clothes or a towel if you really want to explore all the nooks and crannies and get dirty.
It takes around 1.5hrs to reach the cave and it is recommended to allow 15-20 minutes to explore the cave. It is then around 1-1.5hrs to then return back to the Maitai Dam car parking area.
We hope you enjoy the video and find it useful when planning your trip to this area.
