"Displaced" is a social impact film that brings a critical issue to the forefront: the criminalization of homelessness in America. It tells the story of a homeless veteran, Ray, who struggles to find stability and support due to constant displacement by the police. This reflects a harsh reality where people are penalized simply for lacking a home. The film aims to shed light on this crisis, emphasizing how punitive measures against the homeless exacerbate their plight instead of addressing the root causes, like the lack of investment in housing solutions. It's a powerful call to action, highlighting the need for compassionate and effective approaches like housing and support services to permanently solve homelessness.
We Must Fight Criminalization
Fighting the growing criminalization of homelessness and poverty is crucial because these measures often exacerbate the challenges faced by the most vulnerable in society. Criminalizing homelessness not only fails to address the root causes of poverty but also creates additional barriers for individuals seeking to rebuild their lives. It perpetuates a cycle of poverty and legal entanglement, making it harder for people to access housing, employment, and supportive services. Advocating against these policies is essential to foster a more compassionate and effective approach to homelessness, focusing on long-term solutions like affordable housing and social support rather than punitive measures.
Social Impact Films Create Amazing Change
Social impact films play a crucial role in creating policy change and improving our world. By spotlighting critical issues, these films educate and influence both public opinion and policymakers. They have the power to humanize complex problems, making them more relatable and compelling. Through storytelling, these films can ignite discussions, shift perceptions, and motivate viewers to take action, thereby driving societal and policy changes. Social impact films serve as a bridge between awareness and action, making them vital tools for advocacy and positive change.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn't just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Of late, I find myself🐺agreeing totally with Mark way too much for my liking! I must be getting senile. Anyways Mark is right again. The idea that people think we will ARREST our way out of homelessness is the most insane thing I can image. A criminal arrest record for "serial homelessness" can be a "misdemeanor" first offense. "Serial Homelessness" is often a felony after the first offense. Arresting homeless folk is more dehumanizing after the fact because, some employers ignore "ban the box laws" and won't even consider job applicants with prior arrests or convictions. Some landlords won't rent to folks with criminal histories. This creates a homeless underclass. I can't think of ANYTHING MORE UNFAIR & INHUMANE!

I don't understand the point of using actors to make a movie to show what's really going on instead of helping the actual homeless people and let them earn some money?
@InvisiblePeople
@InvisiblePeople 4 месяца назад
That's a very good question. I honestly never imagined that I or this channel would be producing narrative shorts. A few years back, Luciana approached me with distributing this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o8chWrQ-rtI.htmlsi=ijj9qk2QtNURuxde we got approached by many movie companies over the years. some of the films had big budget and recognizable actors, but the story wasn't there, so I always said no. This movie that Luciana produced is 100% based on a real story and there is so much reality packed into the film. For example, when the homeless man is standing in front of the window at the pizza restaurant looking at a woman eating pizza and she goes, and then puts the pizza down because she feels guilty about eating while the man is watching her.. Not a segment of dialogue is shared, however, that scene transmits the emotion of homelessness of both the homeless person, and the public so well. All of our films are based on true stories. We will continue to do documentaries and other videos, but social impact narrative films allow us to tell a story in a way that will help transmit the emotions of homelessness to the viewer. It's just one of many tools we use to help change the narrative of homelessness. Thanks for asking

Several of our writers are homeless or formally homeless. 157 posts from our news journalism were written by formally homeless and homeless people last year. For this production, there were a few homeless people that we did try to engaged to be in the film, but just like our first person interviews, not everyone wants to be on camera. That is not a homeless thing. I could go into the nicest restaurant in Beverly Hills and have the people run away from my camera and half the people run to my camera. Some humans like to be on video and some do not. Please know that whenever possible, we prioritize, homeless people, and informally, homeless people, and everything we do. Friends: The problem is too many degrees from reality for most. Because a person typically has the basics, most just don't get it, until something happens to them, but until then, people usually think its because of drugs or behavior. ....It's not. Actually, from experience: * Homelessnes is caused, the moment enough people around you, begin resenting themselves, and to make themselves feel better, they and others like them, begin taking away so much from a person via passive agression, that before you realize what's been happening, you find yourself in a place, that you suddenly become unable to live normally anymore. Seen it happen to many good people; including myself. The way to escape it: The Rule: Never Trust Anybody Except Yourself..., for in the end, Nobody Ever Comes To Save You..😢❤❤

I'm curious-this fine you spoke of at the beginning, is that a state-wide law, or local to Columbia? I'm asking because I live in MO, a bit South of Kansas City, and I've never heard of that law? I live near a small city of about 25,000, and there are definitely homeless here. But you see them out and about panhandling near the main roads. I assume they would not be doing that, if they could get arrested. It's well known there are 3 encampments in our small town, and again, the police appear to leave them alone. So I was surprised to hear about that fine. A few months ago we helped a homeless couple who had lived in their vehicle, in a store parking lot, for 3 days. Their vehicle wouldn't run. My husband tried to fix it but couldn't. I went to Walmart and bought all the kinds of things you talk about them needing. And then since he couldn't get their car running, my husband called Triple A, and using our account, we had them towed to his sisters house about an hour away. We've not heard from them since, so I pray they're ok! But again, in the 3 days they were parked no police bothered them. So I guess they don't impose that fine in our small town. Thank goodness!!

Homeless and MDP /MUP are entirely different dynamics . Once again your country and the adults online are being taught that living outside without a box you call home is inorganic. MUP- mentally unstable persons MDP- mentally dangerous persons Homeless- a person without a home to own/rent Homeless does not equal to unsafe persons. Homeless equals to a person in choice or has been forced to live outside of a square.

The police already told me if they find me sleeping in a tent I could be arrested and fined is this not a violation of the 8th amendment? I have no shelters to go to they are alway full. If I go down to a pantry they linger around. I just want to exist long enough to get a job and a place to live. I have no idea what to do. I have contacted multiple state reps offices and even my mayor. They offer nothing. I'm not some addict or drunk. I just fell face first into a dumpster fire.

I think I've said this before but I'll say it again. Homelessness in itself isn't illegal, its the actions they take while they are homeless that causes them to be arrested. The most common being theft, assult and battery, sleeping on public and private property, public intoxication and possession of illegal drugs.

Most drug addicts live in houses and apartments and will never be homeless. West Virginia has the highest per capita drug use of any state in the United States, but has very low homelessness because they have affordable housing. No matter what the cause of a person homelessness., housing is the best chance for them to get their life back together, and it saves taxpayer money

@@ShadowFiend777 most drug users live in housing and apartments, and will never be homeless. West Virginia has the highest per capita drug use in the country and they have low homelessness because they have affordable housing. It's nearly impossible to be homeless and stay sober. You go to the bathroom behind a dumpster in a McDonald's parking lot every day and have people spit on you and harass you with little sleep and see how you stay sober To your other comments, how does a person maintain a job when they don't have access to a shower or they're not able to lock a tent, so when they leave to go work, all their stuff gets stolen. Then let's say they do get a job, how does a person save up for first and last months rent to move into a place while they're living outside? They don't have a refrigerator to keep parable food, so you have to eat fast food all the time which is expensive. Homelessness is expensive. It's not cheap to live on the streets. The thinking that a homeless person is going to get a job is not realistic or practical. But let's expand this a little further. Housing people saves, lives and saves money. Your money. It is more cost-effective to get a homeless person into housing than leaving them out on the streets. Plus, once in housing, many will be able to rebuild their lives and go back to work. The thinking someone can get and maintain a job while living in a tent is whacked, and most homeless shelters have rules that do NOT allow people to work and keep a shelter bed
@ShadowFiend777
@ShadowFiend777 3 месяца назад
@@InvisiblePeople I myself am homeless here in West Palm Beach and I've had a job since Christmas of 2022. I am walking proof that it is realistic and practical. As for housing, I'll admit I've found nothing permanent but still manage to go in-between places couchsurfing. As for a shower, there are alternatives to freshen up such as a gym membership, a public bathroom (a library, coffee shop) or in my case, the beach. Going to the bathroom in a dumpster is unnecessary as they can just use public bathrooms during the day. As for drugs, they only make homelessness and sleep deprivation much worse. Street drugs like Crack Cocaine, Molly or Bath Salts make homeless people delirious, hostile and violent. I don't care if they're housed or homeless, it does not sit well with me when I see homeless people acting in such a barbaric manner. I can attest that some of my worst experiences being homeless in Florida have been with other homeless people or under the influence of alcohol. I understand the pain and struggle, really, I do. However, if I'm being honest with myself, I likely would've been off the streets by now if I just laid off the alcohol. I've been sober for 3 months and am doing just fine.
