Hey guys just a quick NOTE: i meant to say there's THREE live versions of When The Levee Breaks instead of 2, my bad! Also, i think i mentioned Chuck Berry when it's Little Richard. These Post Covid side effects got me confused, sorry about that! Enjoy the video!
Will check our local shops for one. I was told to do Eucalyptus with the nebulizer. Thank you for the recommendation. Will listen to Dazed and Confused Live 1973 while doing this or maybe...Breathe by PF!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories yeah that will definitely help. I got my generator from the silver edge. We've been using colloidal silver for skin care, mouth care and my new found post covid wheezing and coughing. You can also make a generator DYI. don't believe the naysayers, you won't turn blue. Just like you won't turn into a dubious food product by listening to hot dog. Yes, I recommend the Seattle match 21 version of dazed for nebulizing and root canals. For other aches and pains, pink Floyd at wembly 1974. 😎
I don't know where you young guys spring from but I'm 68 and African American and a bass player. The quality of musical information here is simply astounding and this was well put together. Your information is more than credible as it makes musical sense even when you are unsure. I indeed look forward to seeing more of these. There is also a chronicling of Jimi Hendrix career on a month by month basis that's almost as informative as this but worth watching. Keep up the excellent work!
Hey Vincent, this is a one man team JCM Studios, so i thank you very much for your kind words! I am a musician as well, so the perspective of playing the instrument helps in coming up with the scripts! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series and the channel. I saw the Hendrix one you mention, but i suspect that is made with A.I meaning a fake voice...i've spotted some funny errors on their scripts. Working these videos is hard, nothing is automated but worked from scratch :) Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
@tomcarl8021 Why not, do you have a problem with it? Nobody else does except you. I'm proud of who I am and will state it if I please. And how many black people went to Zeppelin concerts my friend? I'm just letting people know that their music is universal to some of us..relax
@volkspanzer831 With all the stuff I wrote your own personal animosity went straight to the fact that I pointed out that I was black. It's your kind of thinking that keeps African Americans in droves away from white Rock concerts. I also pointed out my age and that I was a musician. That of course you ignore. Obviously black people bother you. This is the last time I'm going to say anything nice about white musicians. Black people don't act this ridiculous! No more white groups. You've changed my mind.
Duuuude!!! Here we go!!! This is amazing!!!! The most mysterious, mystical album of all time is being explained by the best Zep fan I know!!! Jose you rule! This is awesome!! I’m totally happy and can’t wait for more!!!!!! Love this!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
MATT!!!!!!!!! Hey man so cool to read your comment. Working out this script was tough as i had my doubts on the topic being covered so many times before but i took my time to find the angles and work it out. Episode 3 is coming up and Episode 4 will be a very interesting finale :) Hope you and your family are doing well!
Boogie With Stu was the first song recorded at Headley Grange; when Ian Stewart brought the Stones Mobile Unit down, they set everything up and did a quick test recording to make sure it was ready to roll for the sessions, and that test recording is what became known as Boogie With Stu
Happy to help! These guitar parts are tricky indeed. Not because they are Yngwie Malmsteen fast but light and shade tricky. Page was a genius in the studio. Open G yeah, i know he played it this way live in 1975 so he could take advantage of the In My Time Of Dying setup but it just doesnt' work!! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Thank you Keith! Getting into this script was tough, i won't lie. With so much information that has been told so many times, i had to meditate on the right angle for this one. Glad you enjoyed it!
Mine too! i had to put it there. The way the bass works that part of the final version is always a FAN moment for me! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Yeah, says a lot about them. I wonder who gets the royalties now. Not a lot nowadays, but still worth! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Id always assumed that the guitar in Rock n Roll was just a basic 12 bar. You do a really great job with these docs, and I'm definitely looking forward to Part III.
Rock and Roll is kind of a 12 blues bar, but the added runs on the solo really make it different. I really like it! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Wow, my very first memory on earth was that earthquake, i was 1yr 4mo old, I remember being in a crib and my parents running in my room. Never knew there was a Zep connection, that's Crazy!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I becaaue a huge zep head in the 8th grade so 1983ish, everyone else was into Duran Duran, lol, but yeah, the quake certainly damaged me for life
FWIW, on Levee, Andy Johns eventually took credit for that drum sound. I remember reading about it about 10 years ago just after he died. Basically, the band went to dinner and he and Bonzo hung back and worked out that sound. Nice work again my friend.
Yeah Andy deserved credit for that, but of course Page thought otherwise hehe. I once did something like this with a former band, worked out the drummer's take with effects and such...he was pissed at me for doing it despite the sound being better. It almost broke up the band hahaha. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Dear Jose, what can I say other than “thank you very much” for this magnificent episode? You surpass yourself every time. It was amazing to watch that. LZ IV is the album I listen to the most, it's perfect from start to finish. I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter...you're going to talk about my anthem, Stairway To Heaven… 🥹
Marcia, i thank YOU for watching. Working this script was hard because it's such a well-known topic but i meditated on the angle. Energy wise, it's been a bit challenging, there's something on this album that drains you, i know you know what i mean :) When the Levee Breaks is my favorite song here, the way it just shuts the doors of the world. Stairway to Heaven thought, remains for me, their greatest achievement in recording. It represents so much! Take care!
Wish I could love this record as much as you. I guess that you could say that Presence is my "Zeppelin IV". After 30 years of listening to it, I never wake up with a strong desire to hear it. There's many days where I wake up with For Your Life in head. That's never happened with Black Dog. Still one of the greatest records ever made though.
Thanks so much! Hey Tyler, you can always join my Patreon page to fund the studio! I plan on making EVERY ALBUM i own and the ones my supporters suggest as well! Sky is the limit :)
I'll never forget the feel of my first electric guitar and a friend letting me borrow his complete Zeppelin tablature for guitar. 'Rock and Roll' was one of the first riffs I learned and remains one of my favorites. It's so much fun to play and sounds great. Exact same riff, just jumping up and down the second fret like the rungs on a ladder.
Tom you are talking to the right guy on ROCK AND ROLL, it's my go to song at music jams here. I can't get enough of that song, and of course, you do the DUCKFACE while playing it haha. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Hehe wow, that's great! Trust me i know, revisiting the album is strange. At first i was like what can i say about THIS ONE...then the script happened!
To me, it's incredible that they only worked at Headly Grange for a week. It seems impossible to have put down so much impactful music in such a short time. Watching the Official Video for Battle of Evermore, the band puts up images of the tape box. According to the box, Robert plays the guitar. According to the engineer and Jimmy, he recorded Jimmy messing around with the mandolin. According to the deluxe set CD, the instrumental mado/guitar mix is the Headly Grange mix, suggesting Robert added the guitar while there. Perhaps as something to figure out lyrics to. The final version is different, with the introduction spliced back in as a break that Robert riffs to.
As usual great vid, thanks. Sandy Denny left Fairport in late 69 before Full House was recorded & rejoined for 2 albums, Live Convention in 1974 & Rising for the Moon in 1975. Fairport were recording a live album at the LA Troubadour on 4-6 Sep 70. On the 4th, after playing the LA Forum, Led Zeppelin appear with Fairport Convention at the Troubadour and play an almost three hour jam session. Set list includes songs like “Hey Joe” and “Mystery Train.” Peter Grant took the tapes & they've not been heard since. Both JB & RP knew Fairport bass player Dave Pegg from the Birmingham music scene.
That would be a fascinating listen to hear those tapes!...such a pity Grant took them, imagine....on such a GREAT night for them! Thanks for that story i didn't know about!
Amazing detail Jose as usual, but your take on the medley for the intro theme is efing brilliant. Would love to hear an extended full version of it ..... I don't know ...... maybe 10+ mins long !?!?!
The Playing for Change version of Levee is magnificent. The three women vocalists are each so different and so good. Mihirangi knocks it out of the park - go New Zealand!
Welcome!! Glad you enjoyed it. It's all about love and admiration for Led Zeppelin. Episode 3 is out now and the grand finale Episode 4 premieres December 2nd!
My favorite thing about "Night Flight" is that is always fun to play along to on the drums. It's one of the first songs I ever learned on my first drum set. Fun times from way, way back. Great video JCM.
Drum wise, it is a great track. I used to have this argument with a close friend of mine who's a drummer, he couldn't understand why i didn't like Night Flight that much. I was like, man the vocals...i can't lol. But the rhythm work there is fabulous. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Ahhh you spotted the Live Aid reference! Thank you for watching. This deep dive of their 1970-1971 period has been fun and demanding! A very special time for the band ;)
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories yes, I can’t get enough 1970 and 71 bootleg material. They still had the youthful energy/inspiration and Robert’s voice hadn’t changed yet. I can imagine a deep dive would be very rewarding. Looking forward to the next episode!
I like 1970 much more between those two. Mainly for Dazedc1970, it was vibrant. 1971 was still a bit early in the set and they had to add in the new songs from IV lol. But yeah overall...what a band they were on stage at the time. We need those 1971 soundboards to ses the light of day!
Great episode! There's been all kinds of theories about When the Levee Breaks and its recording process floating around, but I think your explanation of it makes the most sense. I've also heard some of those bootleg recordings of their live performances of it in 1975, but I've always wished for better sound quality from them. FWIW, Jason Bonham plays it all the time on his Led Zeppelin Experience tours and does a pretty good job of it live. Also, JPJ did a bang-up job of both that song and Going to California on his tour, based on the clips of those performances here on RU-vid. Hearing his rendition of Going to California on mandolin has actually given me a desire to learn the instrument myself.
Thanks so much! I wanna record my own take on Levee and try to replicate Page's work in full. I repeat. TRY! lol. Page definitely went for open in G in 1975 using the same setup for In My Time of Dying of course, but it just didn't work the same. Jason's take on Levee is INCREDIBLE, hands down! Mandolin is a great instrument, it's hard, but worth the sound for sure, GO FOR IT MAN! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Great work Jose! I really found your analysis on guitar tuning interesting on When the levee breaks. I have always played it in open G but while the notes were there, it always felt wrong to me sonically. I think you are right that the string tension is unlike what he used for the recording. A little known fact that I can share is that Jimmy also used a Binson Echorec through early live Zeppelin shows. What's interesting is that both the Echorec and the Echoplex delay effects had a great preamp drive contribution that is key to Jimmy's live sound. While these two delay pedals give a different drive characteristics both are really nice and compliment very well a humbucker to Marshall plexi amp.
Try Levee in Open E, you'll love it, i'm sure. Oh man the Binson Echorec you are right, that gave Jimmy that extra preamp sound that i REALLY like up to 1973. Page's sound before 1975 was so agressive. Revisiting the tours for these videos, i am still in AWE. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
The few pictures that I have seen of Jimmy's rig with the Binson Echorec were around the time of the Royal Albert Hall gig and a bit after so circa 1970 - 1972 by the time we get to MSG TSRTS he seems to be using the echoplex at that stage. There are a couple of modern pedals (have both actually) that you can get for both preamp sounds Dawner Prince Boonar (Echorec) and Chase Tone Secret Preamp (EP3 Echoplex). Page's live sound 1970 to before 1975 was fabulous. Agressive, not too distorted and really cuts through. The amp has to be set at the threshold from clean to dirty and these two echo units preamps are the key to adding just a touch of extra gain and sparkle.
Great job as always José. Though I find almost Impossible to chose a specific Zepp album as a favourite, the fourth álbum keeps a special place in my heart. It mix all the precedent experiments with acoustic, blues, heavy and antecipates things they would do in a next future with a sense of poetry, depth and perfeccion rarelly seen. Also all the tracks are master pieces . And Even the "weaker " Zeppelin tracks use to be better than the majority of other bands work, there's no place for weaker track here, only 8 perfect songs. Thanks for letting us to know details about the Zozo making of ❤
Yeah IV is a very complete album, like i said, taking note from all 3 previous efforts, but the more you think about it, IV is a younger brother to Zepp 3, owes it so much hehe. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
I was suprised to find out her name beyond the Graffiti credit for sure. Nothing like visuals right? Thank you for tuning in Paul. Episode 3 coming up!
GREAT JOB on the theme music to these, and I mean its brilliant!! I always enjoy your perspecitves in these videos. I must go back and make my comments on the series with the Black Crowes, I am a HUGE Black Crowes fan and have some interesting counter perpectives to those videos.....
Thanks so much Kev! I took my time to come upo with the theme song so i appreciate your comment, really. Let me know what you think on the Crowes Page video. I really enjoyed editing that, i am all about counter perspectives, its what makes this community great!
Oh yes! He used it on August 11th 1979, second night at Knebworth. Here's the full song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mn0B1YiWuEM.html
Nice opening as always. Your intros to these different series make me want to listen to more Zeppelin. Usually In Through the Out Doof. Always....In Through the Out Door. 🤙
Great stuff- as usual, thanks! I had no idea that some of 4 was recorded at island studios (as per ep 1), always thought it was all done at headly grange! So I’m learning - always good! Thanks again
Thank you very much for watching Jeremy. I felt it was important to debunk a somewhat Headley Grange many guitar magazines created in a way. Island Studios was HIP and NEW back then, so i can understand Jimmy didn't want to take chances here.

JCM Re-watching this as well with a re-invigorated interest in this album as an adult. Not sure if you've had a chance to view @JB_Eckl in his rundown and theory of the guitar parts on When the Levee Breaks but it's mind boggling. I'm still always in awe with the final crescendo of that song through the rotary speaker effect and reverse echo from the slide guitar all set to thundering drums and bass.
I watched his video i think! It was great, was he the guy with the white doubleneck guitar? loved his attention to detail. The final crescendo yes, i agree, it's Jimmy's production legacy to humankind if you ask me! Thank you so much for watching JP!
Wow SOAL i can definitely see why, didn't remember this one. Well, Page was influenced by Clapton in more than thing, no deniying there. I will keep this one in rotation! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
My Sunday morning routine for the past 8 months watching my JCM TV. I know in your video about the Song remains the same that you went to Pittsburgh on business so I know you visited the states, and was wondering if you ever had a chance to visit the Rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland Ohio?
Oh man, i ALMOST went to Cleveland via UBER from Pittsburgh hahah, it was like a 100 bucks and i was seriously considering paying for it but...coworkers had a different plan and we had to attend a fancy dinner, you know how it is. I have VERY GOOD memories of Pittsburgh, need to go back! So cool that you're checking out LED ZEPP IV, this series was not as popular as others but kinda tough to re-tell the story of a classic album :)
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I hope you get a chance to go again. I live near Cincinnati which is about 3 hours north. I am surprised that the number of views to this is lower but I would not worry because those looking for LZ will find you and be hooked on your fantastic documentaries.
Another great series with impressive research--thanks JCM. Will have to rewatch several times to catch all the musical note explanations. Loved the intro theme song too--the middle part reminds me of Santana :) Sorry you got sick. I have long COVID breathing problems too, so I get it. Question: are you planning on going into Robert's and Jimmy's court testimony during the Stairway copyright trial?
Zahrahemani!! Hey! Thanks for the feedback on the musical theme, i really thought about this for a week to come up with a summary of moments from IV! Sorry for your COVID breathing problems, just today i experienced some while doing some errands, it really sucks. Your question i hadn't thought about it because of the limited information on it. BUT, as a musician who thinks they didn't steal the song, i can definitely do an interesting video essay on why SPIRIT didn't INVENT the song either lol. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Will definitely watch that. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts re Jimmy's comparison with Mary Poppins, etc. Hope you feel better!
It's not that Jimmy has refused but a musician should interview him like...BEATO style you know? Not being afraid of the guest AND doing one's homework. If i had the chance i would ask him for sure. I am positive he recorded this in OPEN E hehe. Page also is reluctant because he doesn't want people just using the template you know? And i kinda thank him for his secrecy, it's more fun to find out on your own! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
I don’t know why JPJ didn’t take a page out of the Doors book and play fender Rhodes bass for MMH. Would’ve given them the low end drive they needed for live performances of it
Good point! It would have made a difference on Misty. So weird right? Live versions make me want to scream at the speakers for a low end sound! Strangely enough No Quarter WAS killer live and used a similar setting. Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories totally. That’s because he’s using a Wurlitzer electric piano for Misty which only has a range of 64 keys not much low end, and a Fender Rhodes on No Quarter which has 73 keys and massive low end.
It's incredible how much "borrowing" Led Zeppelin did from those who came before them. I knew about it for Stairway to Heaven, but was unaware of all else. Thanks so much JC for these incredible videos!!!!!!
Yes, inspiration is the term for sure. Borrowed sounds strange hehe. As a musician and composer let me tell you, the subconscious part of creativity is fascinating, what we retain and keep. Now think the 70s without streaming, walkmans and such....memory was MUCH BETTER! I bet these guys made mental notes all the time! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
Hi, funny thing is that after your question about who’s going to buy this LZIV new Atlantic 75 reissue on clear vinyl, I did buy it after having 4 other versions. Well 🤷🏻♂️
Hahaha good! I wanted to get one and missed it. Fun fact, when the Immigrant Song/Hey Hey What Can I Do anniversary single came out i bought it, only to find out, LedZepp.com cancelled it and refunded everybody myself included.
@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Oh well, at least you got your money back. I missed the Record Store Day 2018 single with Rock n Roll b/w Friends. A little expensive nowadays.

Night Flight was played along with much of The Rover as part of another soundcheck back in either '73 or '75 (it seems as though the soundboard recordings can be hard to pinpoint in time. It depends on who ended up owning the material. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PUg0VqKCfPE.html
I definitely think this was Atlanta 1973 because it sounds like an open air recording, i can "see" the P.A in day light hehe. Thanks for sharing this !
It remains a mystery. This is one of those topics guitar magazines have refused to ask Jimmy directly. Bases on the Live evidence, it was Jones of course but that raises more questions than it provides answers!
It was used in the first full-length trailer but it does not appear in the movie thus why i didn't put it there, too bad they didn't use it, probably too expensive right? Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 3 coming up!
The live version of The Battle Of Evermore. John Bonham should have done the Sandy Denny's vocal parts instead of JPJ .It also a shame about Sandy Denny demon's and early death.
Duane you nailed this with Jiving Sister Fanny! I just heard it off their Metamorphoses album. Absolutely Night Flight vibes here. Good to know the Stones vibes i felt were right hehe.
