Trying to mimic or re-create someone else's work of art is often more laborious than just making something original. Mistakes are just happy accidents in an original work while when mimicking something else you often need to pay more attention to detail than the original creator even bothered to pay any mind to.

There's a whole book about the sort of thing you did in making that video called Ultralearning. It's when you set out to learn a difficult thing by trying to apply the knowledge directly, and stopping to learn how to accomplish whatever the next step of the project is right when you need the knowledge. In doing what you did, you probably learned more about each step of the process than people pick up after months of normal study.
