That long-haired guy walking through the woods deserves so much credit, because one of Oblivion's greatest aspects is the forests and the world and the overall feel and atmosphere.
yeaah.... forests in oblivion... Christ, that was more than a decade ago when i started playing this game... game amazed me, forests were beautiful, the whole big world right on front of me and i can go wherever i want and do whatever i want... they really did an amazing job back then.... i dont like skyrim personally, it lost its atmosphere and overall feel like you said, but i do like oblivion and will remember this game
I was thinking the exact same thing, I don’t see any videos about game development for games these days. Imagine how much attention true good games could get from this. Where has stuff like this gone?
it is incredible, this is what i call passion. I love how Todd Howard is just Michael Scott from The Office, and how his team is dedicated to create the best game ever at that time. I was so happy seeing those nerds passionaly creating this incredible game. Thanks for them.
Gaben is our superior! Fathis Ules who is a fence for the thieves guild doesn't even go to his house! He goes to this orcs house and sleeps in a double bed with him!!! He can't get in the house until 5am because only the ORC has the KEYS!!! Fathis sleeps in Dul gro-Shug's house due to a design flaw. He clearly should have been marked to sleep in his own house, but Dul gro-Shug's house is right above it in the Construction Set and the wrong cell was chosen. This mistake will make life much harder for Fathis; he doesn't have the key to Dul's house, and will have to wait from 5am to 6am in front of the door until Dul unlocks it. When he is finally inside the house, Fathis will end up waiting outside the locked Private Quarters instead of sleeping. Also, in the evenings, depending on how you use the fast-travel and wait features, Fathis can often be found locked inside Dul's house. This is due to the logic used by the game engine which ignores locked doors in some instances and places him in Dul's house with no way to get out.
It’s probably why I’ve preferred their pre-2015 games. They all felt like they had so much heart put into them, and you could see the mistakes humans made.
25:44 He's not wrong; the cheesiest of lines read by an actor who commands such gravitas creates an absolutely unforgettable opening to a legendary game.
@holyflame2 yes I know, I was just pointing out that watching it now it's even funnier. But even still people didn't carry pictures that much anymore back then even. It was kind of already a fading trope. But not like a huge amount just it was the beginning of the practice starting to fade out.
I mean regardless of how you feel about Tod Howard, he is literally making millions and I’m sure the people who made fun of him in school are probably working office jobs or minimum wage jobs haha
The fact they got someone like Patrick Stewart for this, but not anyone remotely similar in the pop culture science fiction world for their science fiction star traveling game speaks volumes about the change in their priorities/care
That's because Patrick Stewart ate up most of their voice acting budget, which is why there's only a dozen voice actors for the 1,000+ characters in the game, and therefore why most of Oblivion is just Wes Johnson talking to himself over and over.
God damn it I can’t express how lucky I feel for having experienced a game like Oblivion at the time when I was just 11-12 years old, imagine my hype for Skyrim when I was in high school. The industry was so artisanal, truly happy I was aware enough to appreciate this golden age.
Unfortunately much of the AAA gaming industry is devoid of any passion due to how mainstream gaming has become. It's turned almost all smaller dev teams into massive corporations that are mostly about money. It's not just about money, it's also about agendas. Some gaming companies are trying to be like Hollywood with all of their agendas
Excaliber DG11 I think all of the cities from the games are really really cool. Although Skyrim leaves alot to be desired. Morthal/Winterhold/Falkreath could've been handled better. Solitude could've been made bigger too.
Nope morrowind in a nutshell walk up to someone where is city X "city x is north from here" Travels north for 3 hours at a pace that makes a snail seem like Speedy Gonzales ask next NPC "City X is south from Here" Kills NPC and goes on a murderous RAMPAGE because WHERE THE FUCK WAS CITY X I NEVER SAW IT!
Having seen a handful of people poke fun at Tim Lamb's visor in the recent Starfield Direct showcase it bings me *so* much joy to see he's been rocking it the whole time, what a legend.
Imagine walking in the woods looking for mushrooms or some other shit, and you meet some random dude wandering the woods, you ask him hey what u doing here? He says: I'm making Elder scrolls 4.
shupliance creation club is only in two games, creation engine is used in 3 games and they did more games then 3. Skyrim and Oblivion were back at the premiere technical marvels and also their engine is out dated and not very often updated to don’t break the modding community.
I’ve never felt as blown away by a video game than the first time I played this game. My friend introduced me to this game, I thought it was whatever during the tutorial dungeon… and then after exiting the tutorial I couldn’t believe the scope this game had in terms of world building, NPC interaction, lore, and all the different quest lines within one game. I’m hoping TESVI pushes video game boundaries in the same way Oblivion did in 2006. Skyrim was a refinement but didn’t feel like a huge leap forward. High hopes for the next one 🤞
@@jungen1093 Yes! Oblivion was so much better! The story was better written and the side missions where much more unique and funny in a way only the elder scrolls can be funny! Oblivion is my absolute favorite Elder Scrolls game, even before Morrowind! I had so many hours in that game, I remember being so OPed with character that i could knock down all guards in imperial city with nothing but a dumb clumb and taking such few damage in my armor that I didn't had to block or take potions at all. Those where the days for gaming man, I surely miss it!
The fact that this has 1.7 million views a whole 12 years later and only has 593 Dislikes says a lot about how much of a masterpiece this game was in it's time. Everything about it was "next gen" and stunning. This pre-dated Halo 3 and GTAIV. This was it in 2006.
I just want to say that while I was undergoing the usual bullshit of teenage years feeling dejected and lost and unliked, this game gave me a sense of heroic purpose and a path towards loving myself for the first time. Along with the Lord of the Rings and some 50s American literature, this game has had the most positive influence on me over anything else in my entire life.

@Dominiuk There's a difference between a buggy game a normal game, sure, you're not wrong, there's always gonna be bugs it's just the way it is, but Oblivion was infamous for being buggy as hell on launch, the type of buggy you can only get from wonky testing, Open worlds are hard to playtest admittedly, but it being a massive game is no excuse for terrible QA. Should we let Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem get away with how buggy it was too because they were massive games?
Just picked up my save file from almost 10 years ago off my xbox 360 and transferred the file across 2 consoles to the series x. It's July 2021 and my last save was 11.10.11. One day before Skyrims release. Oblivion was the most amazing game I've ever played, and going back just sucked me in even more than when I left it before. A true masterpiece.
I remember when I first played oblivion as a kid and the first time I played skyrim. I thought oblivion was the most beautiful, fantastic world I've ever seen and I had that same feeling again looking at bleakfall borrow the first time after coming out of that cave.
@@gruntwithripit1386 I remember that. It was so awe inspiring that I was blown away. Then I remember accidentally stealing from a shop and thinking that I might be able to run away and they would forget about it. Halt! You violated the law. Lol
@@fathercadi man the elder scrolls is what made me a gamer. And the leap from oblivion to skyrim was INSANE. My favorite game of all time was immediately replaced by another bethesda elder scrolls game. We're a long way from it still, but if the es6 can replicate that feeling , it'll be worth it. And starfield coming out soon... bethesda just does not disappoint me. In my personal opinion, they're the best gaming company out there.
I started on Morrowind but I was so young, I can't remember any of it today other than it was "amazing". Then came Oblivion and I was totally hooked! I just downloaded Oblivion again today. Here's to spending the weekend in Cyrodiil 🙂
yep I recently replayed unmodded Oblivion and the vibe of just walking through the forests is one of the game's biggest strengths. My favourite part is the Gold Road between Imperial City and Skingrad.
Notice how they utilize people with a particular forte? The guy felt more comfortable making dungeons rather than he would making something beautiful. When you cater to the strengths of people you yield stronger results. Smart company.
if you like doing something, it doesn't mean you are good at it. In fact, oddly a lot of people who are really good at something don't really like doing it.
***** In oblivion every dungeon you enter is the same. In Skyrim there's slightly more diversity, but really they're all the same. It's really not "too much" to say at all.
So satisfying and nostalgic hearing them talk about creating the world. I loved Oblivion's forests, hidden lakes, caves and ruins, they had such a nostalgia and European medieval touch to them.
And nothing about the music? It's probably the most memorable and beautiful thing about the game. But great documentary nonetheless, I loved this game back in the day. Today's games feel so different in a way it's hard to describe.
@@TheAlienGangster really? Did he talk about it? Him not being involved will only have potential to hurt the game, though my hopes aren't that high for it anyways with the way bethesda has been going
The composer is Jeremy Soule. It blew my mind when I`ve discovered that this guy composed the music to every single of my most favourite childhood games. Morriwnd, Oblivion, Skyrim, Knights of The Old Republic 1 and 2, Harry Potter... dude is just amazing. Sadly he confirmed that he was not invited to compose for TES6 ... what a shame
@@Bauglir100 yea, people said the same thing about how mass effect Andromeda was bioware Montreal and not Edmonton and we all saw how anthem (Edmonton's game) turned out. Fact is fo76 has the bgs logo and a lot of senior leadership is shared across all bgs studios. I love bethesda but 76 and es blades were awful.
@@SteveDonev Both of those were spin-off titles, the latter of which is still in a closed beta stage. You can't expect a mobile game with a different gameplay style than the main series to be the pinnacle of a company's standards.
why did i start tearing up in the middle of the documentary? every year i watch this video it just hits harder everytime. Oblivion truly is a masterpeice!!!!
This is so heartwarming. Todd, Thank you for everything, for bringing millions of hours of pleasure to people all around the globe. You'll be remembered for quite a while.
I don’t know if it was intentional parody or just Todd Howard being authentically quirky but that first interview FEELS like a scene from the office. And you know what? I’d kill to see a Bethesda version of that show
Glad to see Todd never switched up or sold out. He made his childhood dream of making video games a reality and I think we can all take some inspiration from that.
Don't take him for inspiration since he is the one who butchered Elder Scrolls RPG mechanics down to the ground and the one who said to us "it just work" while presenting a game that still is one of the biggest scams in videogame history (only surpased by Cyberpunk 2077). Instead seek inspiration in the indy industry, from the creator of Stardew Valley to the developer of Undertale.
Same here. I would rather listen to a thousand stupid conversations (Oblivion) than one good conversation repeated ad nauseum (Skyrim, Fallout 4). If you ever wanted an example of when quality is _not_ better than quantity, there you go.
@@Bauglir100 That's right you here the same conversation in skyrim over and over again. It doesn't feel like they're really communicating with other npcs around them. It feels lifeless. In oblivion it might sound stupid sometimes but at least they always had something new to say. Whereas Skyrim... oh did somebody stole your sweetrole... it's funny the first time but after hearing it for a millionth time, damn it gets annoying.
@@jamesmccloud7535 I remember in the commentary mode for Left 4 Dead, one of Valve's developers basically said that no matter how funny or clever a line of dialogue was, you were going to get sick of hearing it after listening to it a hundred times, hence why they programmed the game so that the characters always say something different for each playthrough. Bethesda should've followed their example.
Back in the day when 'next gen' truly felt like a new step. The way how Oblivion looked and felt on the 360 coming from the PS2 OG XB era was just mindblowing....
Love how they play the combat music over the bug testing section. I don't think people realize how different bethesda games were to other titles at this time. Even today, very few games can compare to the amount of systems being put in place. But no one was doing it then. They were the pioneers
@@schnitzel_enjoyer I’d say “not all of them are bad” but they are. They have to impose their lifestyle choices on everyone. Hell, I like busty Asians and big booty latinas. Where’s my flag? Where’s big booty Latina month?
@Fattt Bear people love to blame Todd for all of Bethesda's mistakes, but distance him from all the things they've done well. They forget just how long he's been at Bethesda, and how much he's helped the company thrive.
Yeah, Bethesda as a company hasn't made perfect games and especially fallout 76 which was arguably their biggest fuck up, but without Todd we probably wouldn't have had Oblivion or Skryim which i played the first time when i was 8 in 2008, 2 years after the release of oblivion and i love these games still and will until i die.
I think the issue with Todd is his constant lying. And I’m not even saying that in an accusatory way like HE’S A LIAR. In the sense that they have made great games with a lot of features, WHY do they always bring Todd out to embellish what’s in the game to such ridiculous levels!? When the moment people play the game they will see the stuff he mega hyped is not in the game.
+OD Music (Óisín) Hours better spent on playing the fantastic game. And if you've already played through every quest and made every interesting choice you can think of: Well then, it's time to get some mods/overhauls and do it again.
RSE 167 Last I checked, yes. You should be quite fine. GL in there. And if you're having any trouble, one of the new 1080 should fuck those problems forever ;D Next on my: To buy-list.
This is so awesome. I had the game on Xbox 360 and watched this with my sister!! Such great memories. Oblivion is such an amazing adventure even 15+ years later. The quests never let me down. Thanks GM’s!
The amount of times I've came back and watched this is astounding. I really admire how much passion and hard work these talented artists have put into the development. Its sad because passion and hard work seem to be lacking in the gaming industry these days.. Great video ❤
bless these individuals for making this game love seeing their smiles and such that brought me and many others joy and opened up more after morrowind etc. childhood man childhood.
Actually...funnily enough... The way the dungeons were made in Oblivion is almost identical to the Doom 2016 Snap Map feature (the way you make custom maps for it). You're given a ton of pre-made sections, rooms, hallways, stairways, etc. You piece them together into a shape or design that you like, then just plop in items, enemies, doors, etc, until it's to your liking and call it a day. It almost feels like they took what they had from Oblivion's dungeon making days, and reused it as the Snap Map for Doom.
I've been a digital artist, 3D model artist and sculptor, texture artist and animator, using said skills to work with games engines (including Halo CE engine, Source, Unreal 3, Unreal 4 and Unity), for 18 years.. Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 really inspired me as a 3D model artist and games designer when I first started out. Been doing those things ever since. I actually use the same technique to create worlds. The "modular/Lego" construction technique.
Much respect to Noah Berry on making an amazing world landscape. I enjoy exploring the land and dungeons I come across that I haven't seen and this is a beautiful and immersive world to explore.
@@mrgreen027 oh undoubtedly man. The soundtrack for Oblicion is God tier. None else like it. The way it was made and how it came about makes sense for why it's so beautiful.
Shitload of stuff was removed, not to mention visual downgrade because of technical issues )(that is it would never be playable with such visual and hardware on the market back then). Just the trailer/footage seem here was recorded on 2x GeForce 8800GT in SLI, or something like that, which was insane.
I guess the closest you'll get to seeing this is when you attack an NPC and they'll stop what they're doing to defend themselves. It wouldn't surprise me if all of what happened in that demonstration was scripted anyway.
That guy who designed the forest really knocked it out of the park. I remember the forests and natural settings to be really breath taking when I first got out of those sewers.
the graphics were great, I just didn't like the fact that the elves had eggheads and the high elves look like Asians and the redguards are so blotchy and most of the girls look like men and a lot of the men looked like 12 year olds
Michael Malone The all looked like eggheads, some more round and others more like squares. Those puffy cheeks and mouth sync (at least in german) kill me every time I start it nowadays. But back then, I must admit, it blew my mind *_*
It's cool seeing people who were in this also be in the direct. There's a lot of people who have been working for Bethesda for 20+ years from Morrowind to Starfield.
I hope Bethesda makes another Elderscolls like Oblivion. Really miss this game, I wish they remastered this instead of just enhancing the graphics in Skyrim.
playing through with mods right now. Might go as far to say my game looks better than Vanilla Skyrim atm definitely looks good enough for a game made in 2006. Still my favorite Elder Scrolls game Skyrim was alright but idk Oblivions Always been #1 for me.
that is what is beautiful about Bethesda they give room for MODDERS to put that little extra touch on something. and you get to play again and you can through mods recreate a different experience.
topkek. "room for modders"... if anything they have taken room for modders. they've streamlined their games so much you will barely find any good reference material in the actual game to build a complex mod on. sure you can add a hundred swords and villages en masse, of course the game will crash instantly because of ridiculous memory restrictions, but for any complex modding you need coders who can write scripts from scratch since beth cut so much content like levitation, jump spells, spellmaking etc that its a pain in the ass to reimplement that stuff at all. Also they deliver a *finished* product. So "room for modders" is no excuse for their buggy messes with reused models all over.
And here we are on the cusp of Starfield’s release… I absolutely cannot wait and can only imagine what Elder Scrolls 6 would look like. Oblivion is my all-time favorite game. I loved it and played endlessly, I was fully immersed in it. Bring on Starfield!!
I think the difference between this Bethesda and the Bethesda behind Starfield is that when you hire hundreds if not thousands of employees you lose that creative ambition. Oblivion was so surreal and really did transform the open world RPG genre. I know they still have it in them, but they need to go back to what made them leaders in the industry before they fully dive into ESVI
This is why the industry going mainstream removed most of the passion in developing games. You have all these AAA studios trying to focus on appealing to as many ppl as possible instead of focusing on already existing fanbases. I miss the time when gamers used to be referred to as nerds. Then all the ppl using that term became gamers themselves
This reminded me of how great the Oblivion soundtrack is. The ambient stuff has such a nice serene feeling to it that feels really unique. Especially with some of the unusual instruments they use, like the harp and flute. I love that.
Its so much fun to watch geeks with something theyre so passionate about. They bloody should be by the way , this is one of the greatest games of all time.
+Karl Meisner 101% Chameleon - unsuccessfully pickpockets guard - [STOP, YOU VIOLATED THE LAW] - {resists arrest} - [WHERE DID HE GO? HE WAS JUST HERE A SECOND AGO]
compare Oblivion to ANY other game that came out in the years surrounding its release and it was lightyears ahead in every aspect. Its easy to look back now and harp on its flaws.
