This Netflix series spoke to me in different way. I grew up around the Hasidic Jewish community in borough park Brooklyn and I was always intrigued by them. I loved to people watch as a child and I always knew that they were completely different from me and my upbringing. My family was one of the very few Hispanic families in the area and were actually the only non Jewish families on our street. I always wanted to know what it was like to be them because we were never allowed to communicate with the Hasidic children around us. Imagine living in a neighborhood where you aren’t allowed to be friends with your neighbors. The only Jewish person my grandmother spoke to was the landlord when he came to get rent money and she lived on that street for 28 years. This story opened my eyes to things I was always so curious about.

My mother ran away with me like Esty did. When I visited my mother's family it was like traveling back in time. Living with them in the summer I can tell you that you weren't missing anything. I don't have many good things to say about them. Even the children weren't children. They always say that they aren't slaves anymore but they are. They're slaves to a radicalization of our religion, slaves to their community, and slaves to their past. It's really a sad life. I don't visit anymore. I'll never go back.

Haha this is so comical. I went to school in Williamsburg. All my friends are from there. First of all, we were all taught music and half my class played piano professionally. We didn’t hang out in bars or got drunk but we went out to restaurants, bowling went on vacations and weren’t deprived of anything. This movie is so so wrong. It’s scary to think anyone would believe that. We may dress modestly but we shop designer clothes at the same malls u shop in. My friends are happily married and VERY much respected by their husbands. Orthodox Jewish men treat their wives like queens. The person this movie is based on came from an extremely broken family and unfortunately didn’t have the average orthodox Jewish upbringing. Anyone believing this garbage has to be delusional.

I'm a Christian, but I found this movie so incredibly moving. I worked for a Christian-based vaginismus company, and SO MANY women had vaginismus due to rigid religious upbringing. Meaning, they were taught sex=bad, sex=wrong, but then when it came time to have it, their body fully rejected it entirely. Furthermore, also as an educated woman, this made me so emotional. No one (especially women) should not have the freedom--especially in America--to not seek an education. So very sad in so many ways.

Great job on this. Four episodes not enough, but I understand perhaps it was to keep to the integrity of the feel and rhythm of the story onscreen let's say. Esty and Yanky's performances deserve acclaim for sure. The best series- I've just truly enjoyed processing and (for lack of better term) - digesting in a long while. - after it ended, I only wanted to think about it a little more (which hadn't happened to me in so long with a series or film - and thank you for that. thanks to Stephen King for saying he was watching this series which brought my attention to it.)

I found Moishe to be the most interesting and complex character in the story, even if the writers didn't intend that. Moishe is obviously very "unorthodox" himself, but at the same time, he is trying to come back into the fold and be part of the community he didn't really fit into, and he's become an ardent enforcer for them. There's a lot of depth to his character and he seems like someone who sees a bigger picture, but wants to stay with the community because it is the only place that feels like home.

Excellent show 🙏🏻 It's very raw in the presentation of the character's emotion and silent fight and no Cliche -- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I began getting intrigued by Ultra-Orthodoxy when I moved to London, I had never seen Hasidic people before. I then visited NY and twice I ended up in Boro Park and Williamsburg by coincidence. I have been waiting so long for someone to explain to me how this community works. I am now hooked to knowing as much as I can, I spend days reading and watching videos. The Satmar sect has my biggest interest though. Over my next trip to NY I will make sure that the trip to Williamsburg is planned and guided! Unorthodox and Deborah Feldman answered all my questions! Amazing work!

Don't know if anyone noticed, but it was the author Deborah Feldman at the parfume shop, while Esty was choosing a lipstick in Part 4. 😊🙃

I think I may be the only person not 'deeply touched' by the series. 'Best Netflix show' - really? I will never get it. But I appreciate the feel of authenticity in portraying the Hasidic community. Great job there.

I've been living in Williamsburg for many years and find the show very realistic. Also lived in Berlin when a child😁. Loved the show!

This is a very open minded and interesting perspective. Thankyou for sharing. I identify with your desire to be merciful and compassionate whilst staying true to your own perspective that this IS a better way to live. Like you said it is a hard and uncomfortable space to be in.

The series isn’t just unique but also incredibly well acted. Every scene feels like I am trough it myself. It is so educational. I never really knew much about the Jewish Communities in general before. I’m really sad that the scene where she got hair cut wasn’t mentioned because to me that was a very essential moment. I would loved to know how they felt about it and what they initial thought was creating that scene. But I honestly can’t complain!
