First of all, thank you to whoever suggested this in this comments. I don't remember who it was, but thank you.
Also, feel free to point out any mistakes I made in my methodology or math. I'm sure the process could be improved, but I also think I found out what I needed to know.
Here's the pens I used, thanks to Goldspot Pens for providing these Kaweco Sport: goldspot.com/pages/search-res...
Here's the robot arm I used, AxiDraw V3: shop.evilmadscientist.com/pro...
Here are the numbers from the experiment:
Broad:
4 sheets
720 lines
7,200 inches
600 feet
183 meters
Medium:
6 sheets
1100 lines
11,000 inches
917 feet
280 meters
= More than three American football fields, including endzones
= 1.1 length of the Hindenburg Zeppelin
Fine:
7 sheets
1375 lines
13,750 inches
1,146 feet
349 meters
= 1.1 height of Eiffel Tower
= 0.93 circumference of the London Eye Ferris Wheel

This video was 16 minutes and 38 seconds. Which is 998 seconds long. Or, 6 minutes and 38 seconds longer than it takes to make 10 minute pasta. Or 4 minutes shorter than the average Anime episode. Or 10 minutes shorter than my average attention span for a RU-vid video. Or 1/86.5731462926 of a full day.

Very fascinating video! And now I actually have a ballpark estimate to give people that ask how long the ink last before I need to refill. (Even if I think evaporation has a bigger factor for me since I don't write my pens empty within a month.) I would really love to see more of the AxiDraw! Maybe test a Lamy Cartridge? (Since the Safari is a popular pen.) Or test some different inks with the same pen? A standard converter of Platinum carbon ink vs some Waterman black vs Noodler's black?

Hi Peter, the reason the paper curls along the length of the paper, is because most mechanically created paper, consists of long fibers that are oriented along 1 axis. When you get paper wet, the fibers in that area swell up a bit and push against each other, causing curling perpendicular to that axis. It curls where there is the least resistance (doesn't have to bend fibers). If the 'wetness' is made up of strokes along the fibers, you'll get the very pronounced curling you got on your pages. It's the same reason why, if you try to tear paper, it wants to tear in 1 direction. It goes easier in the length than the width of the paper because you follow the fibers. @robertsteinberger
@robertsteinberger 3 года назад
The reason the paper curled up is because paper is made of dried fibers that are basically ironed. When you apply water or ink to it, it usually curls up and re-dries in the way it naturally would. Because of the way you applied the ink, it's like putting little slits in it that heal up, every single one in the same direction, which is why one side of the paper surface gets slightly shorter than the other side --> curling up into a circle. Another thing that probably comes into the equasion is that cheaper paper is produced in rolls - the fibers don't settle absolutely flat, and once you apply water, it turns back into the shape it remembers..

I do hope that you explore the idea of creating an “original” drawing from a previous creation using the arm. Adobe used to have a program called Streamline and it created a vector-based object drawing from your scans. I know Adobe moved this function to illustrator but I could never get it to work as well as this program that was never updated past version 4.5, I believe. I hope you pursue this Peter, it would be a way to create series or prints of artwork yet individual artwork as well, and you would avoid the printmaking aspect of selling your art! Good luck I’m off to go look at one of your books, which I got from Amazon!

The pages curled because of the same reason your sweater shrinks in the dryer. The ink is water based, so as one side of the paper gets wet and dries, the fibers on that side shrink slightly, pulling on the other side and causing the paper to curl.

2:30 Kudos to you for using the right term, "hypothesis", most ppl would have said "theory" which is one of the most misused words there are. A theory is something that has already been proved, you know, like the theory of general relativity, or color theory, and is such, that the only thing better than a theory, is a law, like the law of gravity, or the laws of thermodynamics.

"Good" copier paper is definitely the way to go. I bought a ream at work and use it for all my printing and then I can use my fountain pens with no bleeding, etc. And it doesn't actually take super heavy paper. Either 24 or 28 lb. works perfectly.

15:20 Yes, it showed up on my screen with the gradients, interestingly enough, If I pause your video to comment, and your video goes to smaller screen instead of full screen, the lines actually show up diagonally instead! (I'm on a 15 inch screen laptop) Are you going to use those pages for any type of drawing experiments? I'm also curious, you left me hanging, what happened to the fingerprint experiment with the ink test?? 😁😃 I would also like to see you do an extra fine tip test as well, like you said! I love this kind of video, I couldn't say why, but I also think it's cool how you say how long each pen actually was combined, like the football fields, Eiffel Tower and such! I would think it would be great to see how far the extra fine pen could print! Thank you Peter! You made my night with this video! It's 12:40am 10/27?2020 central time in northern Minnesota when I finish this comment! 🤪 I'm a night owl and watch videos to relax before going to bed 🥱😴

Those ridges may be causes by air bubbles crawling up the feed in regular intervals, slightly restricting ink flow in the process until they reach the catridge - but I'm just guessing. On another note: I'm genuinely surprised how long the little cartridge lasted with any of the nibs. My pens feel like they constantly run out of ink from just looking at them. :D

the paper curls because one side is wet which makes it loosen and one side is dry so it has tension. idk how that makes it curl to the wet side and not the dry one tho. also has something to do with making creases in the paper. I was spraying cardstock with watercolor and noticed it curled in too. ionic something?
