It’s not at all uncommon to hear people say that China’s most advanced stealth fighters, the in-service Chengdu J-20 and forthcoming Shenyang FC-31, both incorporate stolen design elements from existing American and Russian fighter programs. But while Russian claims are based on observation alone... America's claims are backed up by hard evidence and the admission of the man responsible for the effort.
Let's talk about Su Bin - the man who stole America's stealth fighters for China.

WRONG... there was exactly ZERO Classified data stolen. Classified data can NOT be hacked because classified data is NOT connected to the internet. If you had ever work with such data you would know that it is kept in a "Secure Compartmental Information Facility" (SCIF) that has ZERO access from the outside of a locked vault where people work on it. Now, it is true they stole design files on air-frame shaping and other non-classified files, but nothing even at the "confidential" level (lowest level of classification) was stolen. This of course begs the question of why the F'k this stuff was not classified, as it should he been, but clearly was not classified at the time.

@chrisergna617
@chrisergna617 6 месяцев назад
It wasn't one guy or even 10. He made a concerted effort to buddy up to as many people as possible, build up his familiarity and comfort level with as many people as possible and build a web of trust around him that caused other people to let their guard down around him. This was lots and lots of small leaks over a long period of time and pieced together. They didn't break in like a bank heist one night and run off with the plans. They managed to get access to a landing gear door plans one time, and then another time, get access to canopy hinge plans, etc. You do that enough, and you can start to slowly fill in more and more blanks.

I’m a retired aerospace engineer and I worked on a couple of these programs and I know exactly how this stuff happens yet every year you hear of more spies stealing critical defense information. Alex I’m glad you’re bringing this in the spotlight because this is a serious problem and I thought sometime in my retirement I would see this change but it looks like it’s never gonna change. For one we need to stop using the Internet to share files between subcontractors and prime contractors. That’s a problem right there and we need to develop aircraft and weapon systems the “skunk works” way -in extreme secrecy, using isolated computer networks and without hiring people from other countries on work visas!! I hope Mr. Shoe bin or whatever’s name is buys a lot of soap on a rope! For his short stay in prison.

People who think that every stealth fighter has to look like the F-22 because "the general design is the optimal solution to the stealth fighter problem" have clearly never done any engineering or design work. There is no such thing as a single solution to a problem. The reason so many new planes look like the F-22 is because it's easier and cheaper to copy and modify a proven design than it is to develop something new from the ground up.

Just one thing to say : the aircraft exterior appearance is just the surface of the iceberg : given pictures, videos, basic specifications, it wouldn't be that hard for chinese engineers to make 3D designs of the aircraft's aerodynamics and asses it's overall performance, the issue is way deeper about the material used' their composition, and much more about the systems of equipment going into the airframe. The Soviets struggled for a while during the beginning of the jet age as they coppied RollsRoyce engines, but didn't know the characteristics of the steel alloys used. Outward apperance can be coppied, for the airframe as for components, the issue is about the functionnality, which can be way harder to reverse-engineer

The key takeaway in this is - at the 14:25 mark, 'many of the documents that he and his hackers stole were actually not strictly classified or even export controlled'. Perhaps that was really the case, as reflected in the light sentence. Personally I think the jail time of 48 months and fine of USD10k were too harsh for taking copies of publicly available documents and photos.

Ok, so imagine having all the equipment to make something like an ikea bed, you STOLE the technical package for it with all the info you could ever require to make it, and you end up making a pull out sofa. They didnt make a stealth fighter, they made a low obserable fighter with bad engines from russia.

As a former Intel guy who was reading about stuff China was doing as far back as 2009, this infuriates me. China uses our openness against us. I'm not saying close boarders or anything, but it's not racist to vet people, especially if they are connected to countries that are known to commonly use their citizens as spies. Like what the actual fuck are we doing? In order for me to have access to these kinds of systems I had to wait almost a year and someone went and interviewed family, friends, enemies, everyone. But this guy could just basically walk in? Wtf.

The J20 has front canards and dual engines. The F35 has no front canards and single engine. It is totally different. As for similarities in geometry this is due to convergence of design. That is given a set of physical laws to solve an engineering problem the solutions all converge to similarities . A good simple example is the bow and arrow . In ancient isolated societies with no communication bows and arrows look remarkably alike in all parts of the world.

Seeing as the 20 is based on the 22 and not the 35 your comment quickly became irrelevant not to mention as it’s been proven the guy he’s talking about in this video was sentenced to espionage of sending said documents away it’s not a joke. It’s also not purely coincidental that only after documents were being sent did the designs majorly change for the 20.

What kills me is the stupid response by people who had access to these programs to talk about these programs to someone who ONLY makes harnesses for aircraft. There is no need regardless of interest to talk about those programs. It is akin to someone who makes door handles for a car asking about the steering, brakes, or tires. The specialty doesn't match. Plus these guys should have been getting counter-espionage information programs to counter this same thing. Maybe their ego got the better of them; hopefully, they got fired (weak link).

My father told me on his deathbed that he knows the Russians have the complete design of the F35, all the components, materials and software. He said he knows the individual at BAE Systems who spies for Russia. I don't know the name of this person but my father never told a lie.
