I discovered this show in reruns in the 90s. It would be on late night tv after I got home from my summer job waiting tables. My sweet dad was amused that I liked it. Discovered The Honeymooners and Gidget at the same time. If my dad was up, he would come down and watch them with me in the living room. He passed away recently, after four years with Dementia. I moved in the last year to take care of him. I tried to play as much music and television shows from his day to keep him ‘with’ me. I miss him so much.

I was born in 1957 and remember this opening theme music and Dobie talking into the camera next to the thinker statue, and that is about it as I was pretty young then. Still it brings me back to those wonderful times and almost makes me cry as I remember how innocent the world was then and how happy we were and all the people gone now from my life. I'll always be sentimental about those days until I am gone. I was just another grain of sand on the beach back then. How fleeting this life is.

Thank you for putting this on RU-vid. God bless Dwayne Hickman, RIP. I watched Dobie Gillis as a 7-year-old kid and I've loved this show ever since. Dobie and cast captured the zeitgeist of the late 1950's and early 1960's, a time of youthful innocence, or so it seemed, to us kids and young adults. I loved seeing the old cash register in the grocery store...high school kids in conventional clothes and without tattoos...Dear God, what happened? What happened?

What happened? Jim crow was overthrown, Women as a class were allowed more freedom, the wasteful governments that the kids of the 50's and 60's voted for exported poverty to other nations in return for cheap goods and lesser career prospects, Reagan gutted the mental health system of CA and then moved on to the rest of the country and gay people weren't systematically attacked in every which way. That's what happened, along with a multitude of other things. Honestly, your nostalgia glasses have you all sorts of fucked up. If you were black or queer you'd probably not have such rose tinted glasses on.

I would agree with the caveat being for season one, season three, and the first part of season two (before they went into the army). I felt the show languished during the army stint, but recovered nicely when they got out and enrolled in junior college. I had a rare spat with my wife, and in my sadness I came opon this episode, and at minute 8:30 Thalia gets introduced as a character. Hitting me like a body blow. She was my first big crush, and I never realized what a dead ringer my new bride is to Ms. Weld. I instantly recognized a hidden reason for my continual fervor for my Irene ... she fulfilled my very first crush. No wonder I am crazy about her, she is what I always wanted. My fervor has mirrorred Dobie's ardor, and I suddenly understand a bit more as to why. Ah, the glory that is a girl! May we all chase after our own Thalia, wholeheartedly, without reticence. The value that we impart into something is the worth it has for us, so I hope that all of us have something as precious as Dobie finds Thalia. It took me a half century of chasing, but I finally had my old sigh of yearning become the smile of possession. I love my girl, as much as Dobie loves his.

Davis (aka Alice, on The Brady Bunch). As a kid I didn't understand most of the situations on either show, but it wasn't until just now that I may have realized how Love That Bob may have influenced Dobie's character. Maynard is more beatnik-y in the early episodes, using lots of beat words & making his voice sound jazzy. He wasn’t as stupid in the first few episodes - he connived with Dobie & gave him some good advice sometimes. As the show went on they dropped the beat words, just using the occasional “big daddy.” Beats were already getting outdated when the show started, so Maynard was turned into more of an innocent idiot than a beatnik who talked about jazz & wanted to be cool. But he still didn’t change his clothes. Beats were known for wearing dark clothes, whereas Maynard wore light colored clothes & shoes. Could’ve been the network censors insisting that the character not be too dark in character or clothes, or it just could be that white looked better onscreen & showed off the dirt & holes in Maynard’s outfit. Showrunners were portraying beatniks as dirty & sloppy stereotypes. The dirt disappeared as time went on & there were fewer holes in his clothes as the Maynard character became more dim & childish. Dobie calms down in later episodes. His manic obsessive stalking of Thalia in early episodes was tamped down & eventually the show featured Dobie & Maynard’s adventures more than Dobie chasing girls. There was just so much you could do with a girl-chaser character in 1959. Even double entendres were forbidden on teen shows back then. You’ll notice Dobie became less manic & less stupid as his hair darkens over time. By the end of the series Dobie disappears (Hickman started looking too old) & was replaced by his younger cousin “Dunky” while Maynard turns into a unicorn type fantasy character, eventually wearing footie pajamas & hugging a teddy bear as he waits for Santa in what looks like an oversized child’s bed in the Gillis household on Christmas Eve. Some of Maynard’s later episodes feature fantasy/dream sequences that were lifted straight from Dobie Gillis & plunked onto Gilligan’s Island a few years later. CBS, like all networks, retreaded their sitcom tropes over & over again (like chimpanzees - you couldn’t have a 60s sitcom without a chimpanzee in there somewhere).
