They are two of history’s most talked about figures, but how much do we really know about the ill-fated lovers? Dr Suzannah Lipscomb retraces the couples’ steps by visiting the places that were important to them, where their romantic, political and tragic lives were played out, and meet people today who are hell bent on finding out the truth about the Tudor love affair that changed everything forever.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

Queen Elizabeth may not have ever known her mother but she was so much like her. Elizabeth was somewhat a little like her dad but very very much like her mother and when she reached adulthood and was Queen and in a place of authority and power where she could speak her mind openly, Elizabeth let it rip. Elizabeth was not like that prior to becoming a monarch because she was just a woman and women weren't placee highly at that time. The council wanted her to marry after she took the throne and she told them that she will have no Masters!😂😂😂 Elizabeth only answered to God and she rightly told them so and knew herself that she had she married and had a king consort he would have rivaled her power as a man when he wasn't even Royal most likely. Elizabeth wanted to focus on building a royal Navy which her father first dreamt, & she wanted to Serve the People. Think of how it is when married and we are trying to please spouses and children and do our jobs which doesn't always leave a lot of time for Much else and Elizabeth place the People First. I love how she would laugh out loud and her mother and father did that so heartily. She didn't do it before becoming Queen but she definitely did it afterwards and would laugh in the faces of suitors who were trying to marry her. Elizabeth was amused.

@calihartley2010 wow!! I didn't even think about that possibility but it could be true!! I don't see how people could have had so much safe sex back then because STDs were rampant and pregnancy was as well. They didn't have condoms in the only thing they could do was pull out and women can still get pregnant that way. It wouldn't surprise me if Elizabeth had at least two children and all of her years because she was sexually active and had several lovers, and especially Robert Dudley. If she could have managed to pull off a pregnancy and not show and go into hiding around the last two or three months of her pregnancy, it is possible. When I had my daughter I know I could tell I was pregnant at 4 to 6 months old but many people couldn't tell because I had a waste line up until I went into labor. From the back you couldn't tell I was pregnant and the people I worked with notice that I didn't get bigger until my last 2 months. My son I was like the same way but even smaller and I had him a couple weeks early. It's very possible she could have been pregnant and hit away the last couple months and complained about not feeling well and then secretly got someone to take the babies and have them adopted out. Interesting!!

No one who truly loves someone feels okay with murdering them. Henry didn't love her, and to push that narrative is a dangerous sentiment. Henry Lusted for Anne. Plain and simple. He was willing to wait because she was beautiful, and the fact that she was literally "hard to get" probably only served to make the prospect more exiting.

I don't think Anne Boleyn was particularly beautiful. Certainly, she wasn't ugly, but she wasn't considered a court beauty. Anne's dark hair, darker complexion, thin frame, nose, and small breasts were not the ideal of beauty, in those days. The nose and small breasts are not the ideal of feminine beauty today, either. What was attractive about her was her charisma and her untouchability. Men who had been with plenty of women - like Thomas Wyatt, and the king - wouldn't pursue just any woman. Anne stoked their attraction through her teasing, her coquettishness, and, probably, a suggestion that she _would_ be up for it, if only that were possible. Anne grew up at the court of France, and that country's licentiousness (a reputation which persists unto this day) permeated the court (headed by the cocksman, Francis I). It was an excellent training ground for the art of seduction. Anne would also have seen how easily the _maîtresse du jour_ was cast off, and taken a lesson from it.

@@charlotte_742 You're both right and wrong. Henry and Catherine were separated by the time he wanted to marry Anne, but not at the time he wanted to sleep with her. His original plan was to have her as a temporary mistress. Sleep with her and then throw her away like he had done with her sister Mary. However, a few months after he decided to get a divorce from Katherine (because of the lack of a son from her and her not being able to bear anymore children at that point), Anne said that she would only sleep with someone she was married to. So he decided to marry her, because he couldn't take no for an answer. Before Anne told him this, Henry was thinking of marrying a French princess after divorcing Catherine. This would have been an arranged marriage unlike his marriage to Catherine, who he chose to marry

Catherine of Aragon was likely an arranged political union. She was always meant to be Arthur's wife, he died, Henry wound up heir, replete with big brother's wife. As much as we'd all like to point the finger at him, let's all agree for once that marriage in the 1500's was rarely a love match - especially amongst royalty. Hell, we'd cringe at marrying off a 15 year old like Richard II and Ann of Bohemia (or after Ann died, a 6 year old Isabella of Valois to a 28 year old, only to leave her a widow at 12). Marriage was for duty and continuing the line, there was little regard for love matches.

It was really Catherine who got to see the very young handsome Prince Henry before he became his own man in his prime (as Anne experienced), after she married him when her husband and king, Henry’s older brother, unexpectedly passed away. I think it took them five to six years to marry after but Henry was still young and inexperienced. Catherine was a bit older than Henry. Henry was not so bad when he married his third wife Jane, but when she died at childbirth and thereafter, he began to gain weight. He loved to eat and drink in excess - like everything he did.

He actually had 2 out of his 5 children live to adulthood. Henry, his first son with Catherine of Aragon, died suddenly as an infant in 1511. Infant mortality was high in those days so it wasn’t uncommon for a baby to die suddenly. He was 56 days old. Mary I, his first daughter with Catherine of Aragon, was born in 1516 and died at the age of 42 in 1558. She was the queen of England and Ireland from 1553 until her death after her brother Edward VI died and is best known by her nickname “Bloody Mary”. She was succeeded by Elizabeth. Amanda Kalchik I read a theory once that Anne had rhesus disease which is a disease that causes the mothers body to think that the baby is a virus that must be killed. I used to think this but now I disagree, only because some of his other confirmed mistresses (like Elizabeth Blount) went on to have multiple other children by other men. If he had an std his mistresses would’ve gotten it as well and would’ve had the same fertility problems his wives had even after they were no longer mistresses. I think it makes more sense that Henry had Kell-positive blood and after the first baby the wives bodies produced antibodies that would attack any other pregnancies (by him).

Yeah I think about that a lot. Elizabeth the first is widely considered to be one of the best rulers England has ever had. Much better than her father ever was. And what he wanted more than anything was a legacy, a son to be a great king. If only he had known that his daughter Elizabeth the first would be one of the best monarchs in history. I just think that in the end Anne had the last laugh. His weakling son he killed Anne to get was a weak child King manipulated by everyone around him who died after barely holding the throne and did nothing of note. While Elizabeth who he didn't like and who he disowned as a bastard for most of her childhood became the great monarch who did so much for england. I swear if one word could be used to describe Catherine and Anne's situation it would be irony. Because Anne thought she was so much better than Catherine when in truth they were a lot alike. Both were previously involved with another man before marrying Henry (Catherine married his brother first while Anne was briefly engaged/or having an affair with Henry Percy), both were pushed to marry him by their fathers (Although Catherine's father did it more out of love and thought for his daughter's well being while Anne's was just a power hungry social climber) both suffered miscarriages and only delivered one healthy child which was born a daughter, and both were in the end discarded by their husband Henry albeit they were discarded in different ways. The only really big difference between these two women in regards to their history with King Henry was how they went about rejection and infidelity. Catherine no doubt was hurt by her husband's adulterous nature but she was smart enough to realize that in the time period she lived in, a woman should never scold or berate her husband especially if he was high in rank. She also did not make a big scene about it because she was a queen and a queen is always dignified, respectful, graceful. She serves her people and does not allow them to see if she is angry or hurt because as a monarch she is a symbol of strength and wisdom to her people which in turn earned their respect and devotion. Probably why Henry didn't cut off her head because she was so adored and respected by his people. This behavior applied even when Henry divorced her. Yes she voiced her contempt and hurt but she did so in a dignified manner. And even though her husband spurned her cruelly and unjustily, she would forever be loved and seen as a true queen even after death. Anne on the other hand was more arrogant and prideful. She thought that she should have been seen as Henry's equal which unfortunately was a dangerous way of thinking back then. She wasn't really discreet about how she felt about Henry's philandering ways and didn't take it in a dignified way which probably made her come off as spoiled and whiny to her people. This was especially unwise considering that England pretty much hated her. She probably didn't understand her position as well as Catherine did because unlike her, Anne was not royal by birth therefore she was not trained and schooled in the ways of being a proper queen. In fact I think the only thing her family schooled her on was the benefits of being queen and not the burdens. So she lost her head but left behind a daughter who would prove to succeed where she failed.

Henry also had to be careful about how he treated Catherine. He couldn’t really execute a daughter of Spain without risking war from Spain and her allies. Anne, on the other hand, was English. There was no foreign power to risk offending by executing her. None of Henry’s foreign queens were executed. Two of his English-born queens were and his final English-born queen, Katherine Parr, made quick amends over a religious disagreement when she realized he was displeased… she knew quite well that as an English queen born in England, her life was not safe from Henry’s caprice.

When Anne became queen and replaced Catherine of Aragon Henry started making Mary bow down to her stepmother but she didn’t since she disliked Anne for treating her poorly and when Elizabeth was born she made Mary her maid she didn’t like her for replacing her mother and discarding her when Anne got to be beheaded Mary was very happy and felt like she deserved it

Henry took it out of context to justify divorcing a wife he didn’t want anymore. The command not to take your brother’s wife ONLY applies if the brother is LIVING, as in adultery, which goes against the 7th Commandment. (Compare this to Herod in the New Testament, who was sleeping with his sister-in-law while his brother was alive, and John the Baptist was jailed for speaking out against the adultery.) HOWEVER, if the brother is dead, not only is it okay to marry his widow, but it might even be expected because there was a system in place (called “yibbum”) from Deuteronomy 25:5-10 where if the brother died without children, the closest living brother or cousin was expected to marry the widow and produce an heir for the dead man. This law comes up in the Book of Ruth, where Boaz had to go through a legal process with his kinsman, who was a closer relative to Ruth’s late husband, in order to marry Ruth. Boaz and Ruth in turn were the great-grandparents of King David, ancestor to Jesus.

Apart from Katherine’s treatment due to the affair, I can’t forget reading records that said Anne mistreated Mary when she came back to living in the castle because she was Katherine’s daughter. But women back in the day did not always support each other. Anne’s death was a tragedy, but I dislike how some people nowadays glorify her. That said is also uncomfortable how people talk on Anne sometimes. “I feel worse for…” it doesn’t matter. Anne did not deserve to die. And to be honest, rather than cheating, to me the worst claims of what she did was how she allegedly treated Mary. And yet she still did not deserve to die. All in all to me Katherine Howard is the saddest story, if only because she was so young and all her records point to the fact that she was assaulted by many men in her life.
