I'm sad I never experienced any of that. All I can do is be grateful for the music I can collect and listen to. The music and movies from that time in our country were pieces of art. I take my 4 yr old to record stores and we pick out what looks cool. The cover art, the designs all of it is truly inspiring. Unfortunately when I look around the US today I'm seen as the enemy. A straight white man in my early 30s trying to figure it all out and provide for my family. Society, music, news, media everything tells me I'm bad and to blame for all the bad that has happened and continues to happen. That I'm inherently racist cuz of my skin color and I must be sexist cuz I'm a straight man. It's really depressing to see what has happened over the last 50 years.

This 6 minute original is the only version for me. When the 3 minute 22 second radio edit version comes on, I feel cheated. This song is a most beautiful, comforting song for anyone who knows hurt and could use a hand to get up out of a rut. For all the feelings inspired over the decades, thank you Marshall Tucker Band.

They helped create the genre that would become "Southern Rock" and that was back in the early 70's. It was a blessed time for music. For the most part, they were allowed creative freedom. And we folks in the 70's had a steady stream of that creativity. New bands were coming out of the woodwork and they were "great". And radio was something you actually listened to. The 70's........you had to be there to understand. It was a musical evolution and we were there to witness it. We were most fortunate!!

When I was a kid, my dad used to play the hell out of MTB. I grew older, got into rock, metal, AC-DC, even some disco. One day I flipped the radio on and tuned in the local classic rock station, hoping to hear some Heart, Boston, Fleetwood Mac and the usual stuff. On came this song. The intro hit a part of my soul that hadn't hadn't been touched in years. About 3 notes in, I was already back in my childhood, hanging out with dad in those days listening and loving this tune. @kevingavigan7883

I've had a lot of people in my life who said that they "would always be there for me", but unfortunately, just kinda came and went, and once they left my life, they didn't say goodbye, so this song really resonates for me, making me feel betrayed, feeling like they just abandoned me, not unlike the narrator of this song feeling abandoned by his ex-lover. I can relate to his feelings about no one noticing if anything were to happen to him. According to the song's Wikipedia article, country singer, Waylon Jennings did a cover version. I can see how country artists would do cover versions of southern rock songs. Southern rock lends itself well to country. This song's melancholic overtones are also heavily associated with country music. One of the most unique things about The Marshall Tucker Band is that they had a flute player (Jerry Eubanks) whose playing can be heard at the beginning and end of this song. In spite of their name, none of the band members were actually named "Marshall Tucker", and the regular lead vocalist was Doug Gray (although lead guitarist, Toy Caldwell, does the lead vocals here, while regular lead singer, Doug Gray, wasn't part of this song). The other members included bassist Tommy Caldwell (who I believe was Toy Caldwell's brother), rhythm guitarist George McCorkle and drummer Paul Riddle. Harmony vocals were typically sung by flute player Jerry Eubanks (who also played saxophone on several tracks, and occasionally played keyboards) and bassist Tommy Caldwell. For this particular song, Jai "Jaimoe" Johanny Johansson (better known as a drummer for The Allman Brothers Band) provided percussion, and producer, Paul Hornsby, played the keyboards. On The Marshall Tucker Band's first several albums, producer, Paul Hornsby, played virtually all the keyboard parts.

@@danielscott3117 There's also plenty other songs of all different genres (past and present) from many different artists other songs that resonate for me in that sense; the songs are listed in order from saddest to the most hopeful; It Makes No Difference (The Band), Love's The Last To Know (Bob Seger), Late For The Sky (Jackson Browne), Stars (Grace Potter & The Nocturnals), Yesterday (The Beatles), My World Is Empty Without You (The Supremes), I Want You Back (The Jackson 5), I'll Be Around (The Spinners), I'll Be There (The Jackson 5), The Fire Inside (Bob Seger), Positively 4th Street (Bob Dylan), Sorry Is A Sorry Word (The Temptations), You Give Love A Bad Name (Bon Jovi), I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye), Someday We'll Be Together (Diana Ross & The Supremes) and Let It Be (The Beatles). Notice how I started with songs that express extreme sadness, then moving to songs that express anger, and ending with songs that express hope, that one day I'll reunite with them. I tend to listen to those songs in that very same order that I just mentioned. Thank you for sharing your own experience. Regards.

First woman I dated in college took me to a Marshall Tucker concert, and I remember the powerful effect this song had on me. It is a universal expression of the despair and heartbreak you feel when love ends and a future without her is impossible to imagine...

We grew up man, got responsibilities, car payments, rent etc. We became exactly what we wanted to be when we were free spirits. Now we’d do anything just to be able to live in the moment one more time. That’s what happened. We became adults. I wish I’d never rushed it.

WITHOUT ANY APOLOGIZES. I was just thrown back to my childhood...... I was 12, or 13, and my next door neighbor was having a party. Saturday afternoon, early evening. Loud music. LIVE.Loud music. I was glad to hear it! I went to the fence. (DON'T TELL ME YOU WOULDN'T HAVE DONE IT, TO! I'LL CALL YOU ON IT! ) Shortening the story, There is a venue, too small for #Steve Martin to play. The Santa Fe Banjo, and Fiddle Contest. My next door neighbor, founded it!

Oh, man I love this song. Just playing along with it now, I noticed that while I think of this song as being in D mixolydian, Toy doesn't really play that C natural very much in his solos. He sticks to the D major scale, and really works that 2nd to the major 3rd bend. It's what gives this song such a sweet feel over a chord progression that many guitar players would work more of a blues feel into. And that tone!!! It's a classic album from top to bottom, and I always get a little weepy during Ab's song, though it's way to late for me to die at 23! Thanks for posting this full length version, the only way to go.
