It passes my "Do I still have it playing in my head after it's been finished for a while?" test, so I'll give it a thumbs up for that.

To answer your question about if they normally use the flute, listen to "Heard it in a love song" to find out for yourself. :)

Toy Caldwell was the founder and lead guitarist. He didn't normally sing lead, but this one was his. He wrote this song about his fellow Marines in Vietnam getting "Dear John" letters. Toy Caldwell USMC 1966-69, Vietnam 1968-69 - wounded in combat and returned to finish his tour even though he was offered a discharge.

Though they never had the popularity or the impact of their contemporaries, such as Skynyrd, Allman Brothers or ZZ Top, they did have a number of really good tunes. All I have is a greatest hits disc, but I play it more than I do Skynyrd, these days.

My mom used to play this all the time, this takes me back to being a kid in the living room when she put this on the record player... those were the days. What I wouldn't give for one more listen in the living room with her...

‘Heard it in a Love Song’ is really good also. I’m not super into this band but I did have their greatest hits LP. Finally got to see them a few years ago at the Stagecoach Festival. Very satisfying.

The first time I heard of The Marshal Tucker Band was as the opening act for Joe Walsh. I had opera seats close to the stage. I went out the next and bought their albums.

Bless your heart, I'm thrilled you picked them out of the air. This is my favorite MTB song, it's so bluesy and melodic, it's country, but it has the layering of something more progressive. Toy Caldwell actually sings lead on this one, one of his few but it's so full of heart. But they have a bunch of good ones; the live version of 24 Hours At A Time from the Where We All Belong album would be my next suggestion. The band also has an interesting back story, with many of the members going through high school together, playing on the same sports teams, and several served in Viet Nam - Toy Caldwell came home with a Purple Heart. Toy and his brother Tommy (bass) were called the "Thundering Thumbs from Spartanburg" as they learned to pick guitar with their thumbnails from their dad. Paul Riddle was one that didn't grow up with the rest of the gang; he has a jazz background which is why he keeps those drums in such a tight pocket.

Had this album in college, great song, another one that’s a must hear off this album is "Take the Highway" Met and hung out backstage with the band in 1999 when they played at the Baker Theater (Dover, NJ, was owned by a friend back then), they are wonderful live and a great group of guys. Also met the Beach Boys, Edgar Winter and Tom Jones when they played there.

As a non-usa born, I feel this kind of sound is the one that may best define a certain America. I'll have to dig into, to be more familiar with. And like. Maybe it is impossible for me to love this sound as you do, but progress is always possible, I guess. 😊

They are some good ol' boys from the mountains of South Carolina, or Spartanburg, on the edge of the hills. "Take the Highway" is their other big hit. They struck me as a sort of little brother to the Allmans and the Doobies. From my own limited perspective, I would suggest that they played it too safe, and didn't seem to progress. Their hit songs are pleasant and rather nostalgic. A more inventive band from the Carolinas would be Squirrel Nut Zippers...from the Research Triangle of North Carolina. Their song, "Hell" is very cool. Tom Maxwell, the singer, is an acquaintance. He once wrote about my great-great-grandfather. NC has better artists than SC, save Colbert. Coltrane, Flack, Monk, Nina Simone, Sweet Baby James, etc... Do more of these folks! Go Tarheels! :)

5% And standing in line, on a cold, windy December night, "Can't You See"? Waiting with a few thousand others for The Sothern Rock Tour, (Lynrd Skynrd, Outlaws, Pure Prarie League, and Marshall Tucker.), "Can't You See"? Police open the doors, and the mad rush to get warm forces them to close again. A riot ensued! "Can't You See"? We were dismayed, the show was delayed, and the sets were shortened! "Can't You See"? What a tragedy, for this was to be, one of Skynrd's last shows with the original band before the accident. "Can't You See"? Peace & Love.

I heard this song on the radio a lot growing up but I've never been partial to bands that use "Lawd" and "ya'll" in their lyrics. It's a good song, well played and conveys its meaning well, a bit repetitive.

If you like, and are just now experiencing the whole southern rock jam bad genre, being an old man I do have some I think you might find interesting. The Allman Bros - "Please Call Home", "Whipping Post", "Melissa", "It's Not My Cross to Bear" The Outlaws - "Green Grass and High Tides" Little Feat - "Six Feat of Snow" (It's a little more TexMex) and then Dixie Chicken Charlie Daniels Band - :UnEasy Rider" and "Long Haired Country Boy" Willie Nelson - "Seven Spanish Angels" Johnny Cash - "Cocaine Blues" (Live at San Quinten Prison) Jackson Browne - "Rosie" and "Ready or Not". Johnny Winter - "Ain't Nothing to Me" and "Rock Me Baby" Edgar Winter - "Tobacco Road" This is just a beginners list of what is out there, if this is your interest.

Thanks for the reaction to MTB!! I saw these guys back in the mid 70's and it was the best concert I have ever attended. "Heard it in a Love Song" is another of their songs with that awesome flute. However, if you want to find out who they really are it is best to listen to their longer songs like, "24 Hours at a Time", "This Ole Cowboy", "My Own Way" and especially "Everday I Have the Blues". Live versions are the best. You will need to tighten up your shoelaces for this one. Here is the live version of "Everyday I Have the Blues" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A-y4YQGoILc.html

MTB was such a great band with many awesome tunes. Take the Highway from the same album is fantastic!! I would suggest that next from these guys. The live album is great also and a better feel for the band. Toy Caldwell sings this one. Doug does sing most though. A lot of tragedy with this band.
