The Martian was a very good and surprisingly light hearted and funny movie considering it's Ridley Scott in space, and also the fact that the opening felt to me a lot like we were about to revisit his horror classic Alien. This one wasn't as much of an edge of your seat nail biter for the full ride, but definitely still had its share of pretty tense and stressful moments along the way, and is overall a movie I would definitely recommend to any fan of sci-fi and/or survival movies.
I give this movie 8 out of 10 space pirate potatoes.

Besides the intensity of Martian dust storms, the only truly unrealistic thing about this movie is that NASA is fully funded.

Also, the "helmet" he cracked wasn't actually the helmet, it was the visor assembly. The NASA A7L "bubble" helmet is made from a clear poly carbonate that's tough enough to stop a bullet. Also the HAB rubber, even under four atmospheres, fails somewhat less dramatically. It kinda just cracks and gradually depressurizes. Also, it takes several hours to don an EVA suit because it's only under a partial pressure of O2 so you have to pre-breath O2 for an hour or two before putting it on or you might get the bends, so I doubt Lewis threw one on to grab Watney when Beck was already suited up. Also the rotating section of the Hermes is moving waaaay to slow to simulate even moon gravity, it needs to be moving at several RPM. Also the rotating section of the Hermes is waaaay to small. The Coriollis forces would be so great that every time someone turned their head, one ear would feel like it's falling while the other felt like it's lifting. Also (and this is a big one for me), you can see the rotating section of the Hermes unobstructed both inside and outside... so what the hell is holding the the front half of the ship together with the back half of the ship?! How is power, data, hydraulics, etc. transferred between them?, Are those two enormous failure prone rotating seals the only things holding the ship together?! And there are no pressure bulkheads there to isolate them if and when they fail?! (The book didn't have these issues because the entire ship rotated).

@@JFlatby I was sad they didn't have Watney deal with the more realistic planetwide dust storm on the journey to Scaparelli crater like he did in the book, but I guess that would have eaten up too much time.

The phrase "Steely Eyed Missile Man" is the highest compliment an astronaut can give to another person. So when the astronauts call Rich Purnell (Donald Glover) a "Steely Eyed Missile Man", they were complimenting him.

The little inflated balloon on the rover was to make more space for the equipment he had to take with him to survive the journey (oxygen reclaimer and water reclaimer). In the book it explains it more in depth, but they kinda skip through it in the movie. The main problem was the equipment was too big to fit in the cab of the rover so they had to figure out a way to make the cab bigger. Solution was to make a hole on top, cover it with a balloon, and the equipment pokes out the top inside the balloon.

@@FoilHatReviews The audiobook of Andy Weir's novel is available for free. He put the text of it online while he was writing it, and so there was a lot of real-time input from scientists and engineers on making the math realistic. The main thing that they changed about real Mars is that the atmosphere on Mars is so weak that those storms, although having a high wind velocity, are not actually powerful enough to do the kind of damage depicted in the movie. And they didn't bother to depict Mars' 1/3 earth gravity, but that would have made their effects budget so much higher.

In the book Mark does suggest the Ironman maneuver but it is vetoed immediately. Beck goes and gets him as planned without all the silly stuff. And yes, Teddy did care about Mark and wanted him rescued. Just take a look at his reaction again when he learns of the Chinese offer.

Oh I see! I felt like I had a million questions watching this movie, it sounds like most of them were answered by the book and that it also took a slightly more realistic approach to the story than the movie did. I probably missed that reaction to the chinese offer. Anyway I assumed he probably did of course want him rescued after all but I was still surprised by how much of a sour butthead he was throughout the entire movie. It's not that he came across as pure evil or anything but I found it really difficult to find his character particularly likeable. Often the grumpier characters also tend to have some kind of revelation along the way that makes them lighten up a bit and I was kind of waiting for something like that to happen but I guess Jeff Daniels just stays grumpy :')

@@FoilHatReviews I think you would really enjoy reading the book. There are a lot more plot points that were not in the movie. There's a lot more technical talk, though, that might be hard to get through. I know it was for me. Vincent Kapoor is Venkat in the book, Mark accidentally kills Pathfinder while preparing for his journey to the other MAV leaving him only able to leave Morse Code messages with rocks for the satellites to read, and Mark also has to figure out how to get through a major dust storm without NASA being able to warn him about it because of the loss of Pathfinder, not to mention rolling his rover getting down into the crater. Mark also says that if worst comes to worst, he has suicide plans by taking an overdose of some of the drugs they had brought along on the mission if there is absolutely no chance of being rescued. He has no intention of starving to death. The book starts out with Mark already alone and contemplating what he's going to do. You don't get a third person account of him being lost until about a third into the book. It's also more sympathetic to Teddy, what with him saying to himself once they have a potential rescue plan "Hang on, Mark. We're coming", plus once they figure out he's alive he personally goes to Chicago to tell Mark's parents he's alive but that his odds for survival are not good, although the actual scene is not there. Teddy might speak bluntly, but he has the entire weight of NASA on him. His reaction to the Chinese offer is one of great relief. There's also several changes that author Andy Weir admits in the audio commentary on the Blu-ray/DVDs were much better than what he wrote, such as Mark having a little crane for lifting stuff on and off the rover instead of him building ramps out of rocks, and although he didn't write the "science the s*** out of this" line he wishes he had because he thought it was a great line. There's a lot of other stuff that's different, but I already wrote more than enough. Don't want to give everything away.

@@FoilHatReviews First off - very nice reaction. The Teddy character was perhaps direct, but I think he was the most realistic character - he is the person you would want in charge. He was not making emotional decisions, but looked at the bigger picture - always. His decisions were correct at nearly every point - and wanted to ensure the safety of 5 people. The ending with catching Mark was very Hollywood (and silly with the Iron Man method). Mark probably should have died and the crew risked their lives. If the Chinese rocket failed the Hermes could not have just stopped. The crew would have sling shotted around Earth and died of starvation before they could get back home. He pushed his team hard and wanted to monitor Mark. He gave the one character full control over the satellites to monitor Mark. When the team was building the supply mission they said it would cost a fortune - he told them not to worry about that - he will find the money. Even his disappointment when the one scientist said "We will bring him home alive" - he knows that the entire space program funding rests on public opinion - he needs to ensure the right messages are getting out. You said you missed the reaction to the Chinese offer - that was an amazing reaction - A fist pump and mouthing yes. Also, he wanted a code name for the secret "Lord of the Rings" council as well (doubly funny because Sean Bean was there!). He was human. If you ever do watch the movie again, watch his character more closely and decide who else in the movie you would want in that role - I think you want someone with is exact personality.

@@sedawk Good points and you're probably right that there's little details I most likely overlooked on the first watching. I agree that Teddy is probably a very good leader in terms of logical decision making and risk management, he just came across to me as a bit too cold and even unnecessarily rude at times so even if his heart might have been in the right place I still think he could probably benefit from brushing up a bit on his human relations skills :)

If you enjoyed the science-minded side of this, I'd recommend Andy Weir's other work. He wrote The Martian, which is excellent, Artemis, which I personally enjoyed quite a lot (though not as much as The Martian), and most importantly: Project Hail Mary. That is the current coup de grace. Utterly incredible book, so much so, it is being made into a film - and I hope the film does it justice.

I've read the novel that this movie is based on, and I feel the need to answer some of your questions about this movie that the movie can't answer. 8:17 In the novel, Mark Watney explains why poop can be used as fertilizer, and that's because it basically is fertilizer, people centuries ago called it "night soil", and although bacteria from poop can potentially make you sick, bacteria is also important to help crops grow. But the downside is poop has a type of bacteria called "pathogens". Why that is a bad thing is because: if you ate crops that grew in soil fertilized by another person's poop, you would get sick, so the only way you won't get sick is to fertilize the soil using your own poop, and no one else's. 8:58 The movie made it look like Mark had an easy time getting all the dirt inside, but in the novel, it was back aching work for him, shoveling all the dirt into the boxes and carting them into the Hab. Even in Mars' low gravity it was still hard work. 9:55 That ship is called the "Mars Descent Vehicle", or "MDV" for short, it is the ship Mark and his crew used to get down from the Hermes to Mars' surface. See, before Mark and his crew arrived on Mars, NASA sent the Hab and the "Mars Ascent Vehicle" or "MAV" four years ahead of them so that the MAV can develop enough hydrazine in its fuel tank to rocket Mark and his crew back to the Hermes when they are ready to leave Mars. 10:04 The fire is meant to burn the hydrazine to make the water. In the novel, Mark made a slight miscalculation and the fire did not burn all of the hydrazine, leaving it hanging out inside the tent, or Hab, which is very bad, because a single spark of stray electricity would blow the Hab up. Mark realized this and he got so terrified that he hid inside the rover for a few days until he figured out how to drain out the hydrazine the fire didn't burn. 15:48 I don't know if you know this, but Pathfinder is real, it isn't some random plot device to help Mark communicate to NASA, it is still up there in Mars. The author who wrote the novel this movie is based on, Andy Weir, did careful research into how Pathfinder could be used to communicate back to NASA, and he had some outside help from some fans. 15:50 Somehow, he managed. In the novel, it wasn't easy for Mark to get Pathfinder on the rover. He had to make a ramp out of rocks to get it on. He used the crane when he got back to the Hab. 17:03 Mark eventually does get sick of potatoes, at least he says so later on in the novel, mostly because he runs out of ketchup. Potatoes taste so bland without ketchup. 19:05 In the novel, he typed: "Look! (.)(.)!" Those are supposed to be a woman's boobs. In the movie, he didn't type that, he said something offensive about NASA. 23:34 The potatoes he already grew survived, but the real problem here is all the bacteria and germs in the soil are dead, he can't grow anymore potatoes now. 24:07 In the novel, Mark made a joke about how anything can be fixed by just slapping duct tape on, I forgot how it goes.

Concerning the testing of the unmanned supply rocket that blew up: Testing would not have made any difference. Some of the supplies had melted, were fluid, and the launch forces threw off the load balance which then interfered with directional alignment. That made a wobble, which grew more erratic, so the physical stresses it caused made the rocket tear itself apart. Testing would not have notified them of a load issue; testing only checks on engine function issues, and this was a load issue.

The whole Ironman idea was ridiculous. Mark would have had to keep the thrust vector of the escaping air aligned with his center of mass, otherwise he would spin uncontrollably. The MMU the commander is in has multiple thrusters that balance each other out when starting and stopping a maneuver and are computer controlled to do so. The book explained the failure of the habitat airlock. The hab was only designed to last 31 days and it had multiple airlocks that would see regular use. Mark was there well past the designed longevity and he also almost exclusively used the same airlock when going outside. In the end, he simply wore it out.

Even if he were to fix the antenna that was broken in the storm it wouldn't do him much good. The antenna was for communicating to HERMES, the space station in orbit, which would relay the message back to Earth. The secondary Comms all fed to the MAV, which would relay to HERMES and then to Earth. With HERMES and the MAV both gone from orbit there is nothing for him to communicate with using the equipment they brought during the ARES missions. That's why he needed Pathfinder.

I am a cave explorer in Kentucky, where the caves are too cold to really do extended multi-day camping trips in, but in the caves of the desert southwest, like Lechuguilla, cave temperature is a super comfortable 73 degrees F year round, and those people can camp for days in the cave, on their way to survey some remote destination. @@FoilHatReviews well without much indication from you of what you're looking for to narrow it down, the obvious go to for me from "Interstellar" would be the other Christopher Nolan flicks like "Memento", "Inception", "Tenet", etc. For space stuff you don't know, I'm not sure. I might have to think about it. How old are you? There's probably lots of older random stuff that might be more lighthearted or kind of cheesey that you might've missed. Like "The Last Starfighter", or things like that. What about historical based NASA type stuff? Are you into/have you seen any of that? The trifecta there would be "The Right Stuff", "Apollo 13", and "From The Earth To The Moon". "The Right Stuff" is one of my favorite movies. A film adaptation of Tom Wolfe's book, which is really more of an examination of the personality type that makes up these guys who have "the right stuff", starting with Chuck Yeager being the first man to break the sound barrier, up through the original Mercury 7 astronauts. "Apollo 13" you're probably familiar with, and is kind of self explanatory, but off of it's success, Tom Hanks/Ron Howard/etc. produced a great HBO miniseries called "From the Earth to the Moon" that briefly touches on the Gemini missions, and then details all the Apollo missions. The second episode about the Apollo 1 disaster is particularly touching. Oh! Also, I think in maybe 2005, there was also a good BBC miniseries called "Space Race" about Sergei Korolev, who was the genius behind the Soviet space program. How about "The Abyss"? Have you seen that? It's underwater, not space, but if you ask me, any day of the week, and twice on Sunday, I'd tell you that it's the best film that James Cameron ever made! If you haven't seen it yet, here's an important caveat that I suggest you pay heed to. Everyone is going to tell you that if you watch "The Abyss" to see the special edition director's cut. I may be the only person to tell you to watch the original theatrical version first. The special edition is amazing! It literally has like an extra hour of footage to include the idea that James Cameron had a dream about that inspired him to make the movie, but the extra stuff really kind of changes the mood and tone of the movie in some ways that almost make it a different movie. So, definitely see the special edition, but I'd recommend that you definitely see the original theatrical cut first!

First of all, this is just how I provide commentary on things whether I play games or watch movies or whatever, I just blurt out my thoughts and "think out loud" whatever is going through my mind and anything I might be wondering about, trying to be as unfiltered as possible. Often those thoughts come out in question form (many of them also rhetorical) and it's really not something I can easily change. If I was trying to consciously censor what I say and don't say every minute of the movie, that would trip me up completely and would make for a very awkward and unnatural watching/reaction. I hope you also understand that if I just watched everything in silence, that I also couldn't include any of it in the video since for legal reasons you are only allowed to include the few bits of copyrighted material that you actually provide commentary and/or criticism on, according to fair use laws. So without a fairly constant commentary, it wouldn't make for much of a video, at least if you want to keep things reasonably legal. I think a much better question is why you would even bother trying to suggest I should change anything at all. Everybody has their own styles of expressing themselves and if you don't like mine, just move on to somebody else that better suits your tastes?

Yeah, Teddy at first does come off pretty unlikable. Somewhat too "all high and mighty", or kinda having a stick up his... you know. Still, by the end it does kinda implies, by his reactions, that he genuinely cares and is genuinely happy. Even if it's not at all too clear (to me, at least) if his preoccupation is about Mark, or about the whole PR thing, by the end of it I'm still inclined to give him a pass.

Yeah, it's possible I was a little overly harsh on him too, I just have a really hard time with that particular snarky condescending sort of personality that finds every excuse to criticise or take little stabs at someone, and I find them particularly unbearable especially when they're in a position of power over others.

He is the boss of NASA. It is his job to keep the organisation running. And if he fucks up the pr the whole missions get cancelled and the organisation collapses. He cares more than most people but he has to make the sensible descisions, not the heroic ones. Media literacy is a wonderful thing but many people seem to lack it

@@FoilHatReviews you asked 5 questions in the first 20 mins that all were answered before you asked them but because your too busy thinking of ways you can figure it out you missed it. It got so annoying asking questions that have been answered I left your video take the criticism or don't it's no sweat either way

@@Rvbeus Well, I will definitely keep being me and expressing myself the way I do, and as I'm only human I'm sure I will likely also keep missing plot details here and there in future things I watch, but I'm sorry if it annoyed you that badly I guess.
