Every day I turn on the news, the internet, and social media wondering what the latest "Dems vs. Repubs" (or vice versa) drama is. Did Hunter Biden's laptop FINALLY get revealed to the public after years of supposed evidence this week? No. Biden was cleared by a Republican House report. Did Trump finally get arrested? No. Just successfully sued for rape and defamation. Did George Santos come up with new an exciting lies more crazy than the ones that got him elected? No, but he did get 14 federal charges level against him.

Huh so job qualifications would actually go down? Hey that's a nice silver lining. I was also thinking that since in the comics and otherwise, all of New York is basic ground zero for the apocalyptic events that happen every week, shouldn't that mean NY would actually be one of the cheapest places to live? Property values should have gone way down after the first alien attack. After the six billionth alien attack you'd think landlords should be practically paying tenants to stay. Government basically begging businesses to stay open to keep the economy going at all there. It's either that or just, New York winds up dissolving into a no man's land that barely anyone calls home.

The thing about the mcu is it used to be relatively planned out, so every movie felt like it had consequences on every subsequent ones. It was all relatively self contained within factions like SHIELD and the like. Now though, every new movie feels the need to introduce their own secret conspiracy, hidden world, new powerful faction, and even magic system. It's just waaay too bloated for anyone to keep track of everything

MCU is in the phase 2/3 stage again where they have a ton of ground to cover before they can get to the real main villains. Original phases after 2 were obviously going towards Thanos, even if the movies themselves were about secret conspiracies, new powerful factions, magic, etc. and there were common complaints about bloat and everything being hard to track. The new phases are going towards Kang the Conqueror in a Secret War event, but because not everything has been tied to that yet it feels eclectic and uncontrolled, made worse by how much of it are TV-style shows which are harder to keep track of. To the MCU's credit, they are to an extent trying to keep things categorized, i.e. magic stuff looks more or less like Dr. Strange magic even if they are only barely related, but they definitely need to pull off a new Avengers movie type thing to get it all sorted out and working again like they used to.

Some of the absurd things that are always happening that you just would never know about. 1. Your universe being obliterated and finding your self face to face with a pink fart cloud that eats reality. This happens because someone was 5 minutes late to a coffee that didn't lead to the sacred timeline (Loki) 2. A wizard can make you forget anything he wants on a planetary scale (No Way Home) 3. It seems any random nitwit can end your universe the way these newer movies have 'the end of the universe' as the stakes. 4. Random incursion from someone discovering multiversal travel. Turning your home into a hellscape. This is happening an infinite number of times with infinite people because nobody seems to understand what infinite means (Dr Strange 2) 5. The many heros see to not care about the many bodies they leave behind when they have the funnies. And you can't do anything about it because no one cares about the sokovia accords anymore. It's back to rampaging lunatics with incredibly destructive powers.

All they typically use their inventions for is committing thefts. The Rogues are a group of likable thieves who are considered the Flash's friends in addition to enemies, and they also avoid killing people because it helps them stay below the radar. If you continue this series, you really need to talk about the Star Wars galaxy. It doesn’t matter how many times the Jedi beat the Sith. It doesn’t matter how many Empires are toppled or how many planet-busting super weapons are blown up. The Force craves balance, and when Light wins, it gets to work building up the next dark side threat to put it back, and so on and so forth. Conflict is not only a constant, it is a literal force of nature.
@tristankawatsuma8962
@tristankawatsuma8962 Год назад
That’s actually an iffy part of Star Wars. Nobody is really sure what “Balance of the Force” means. There are two groups by this point, both in universe and in real life. Your side is the side that interprets it literally, that light and dark must be balanced. This is reinforced by how non-Star Wars media with this topic usually portray balance like this. There are even characters in Star Wars who think the Dark Side has its uses. The other side of the debate thinks the light side is the natural version of the Force and so the dark side must be wiped out since it’s a form of corruption. Personally, I like to take the latter point of view since it’s more idealistic and optimistic. Sure, Kotor 2 makes the argument that the Force is malevolent and manipulative, but Canon material usually shows that anyone who turns to the dark side suffers. Cal Kestis in Jedi Survivor seems exempt from this as he only uses the Dark Side in a limited manner. For another point to balance meaning the extinction of the dark side, compare the Imperial Era with other eras. Yes, both Republics suffer from corruption which the Sith use to rise back uo as bd they have a lot of piracy and crime, but everything gets worse under the reign of the Sith. They even let criminals and bounty hunters continue operating so long as they are allies. Still, Star Wars has yet to properly define what Balance in the Force means. You could be right and thus there will never be balance since the Sith always want to conquer and the Jedi try to stop them. However, Canon has yet to add the origins of the Jedi where their predecessors delved in both the light and the dark.

I take a third position and it’s less that the force craves balance and more that the Jedi and Sith are inevitabilities because of sapient nature. There will always be crime and dastardly plots that someone has to foil, and why not be the Jedi to do so? But people are flawed, and some Jedi *will* fall- no screening system is perfect. And so the Sith will be reborn. That doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be shooting warfare- I honestly think it’s better for both sides if they actively stop trying to destroy each other. I still have a lot of nostalgia for the early MCU before it fell off, but my biggest, perpetual problem with its worldbuilding is something i've coined as *"Perpetual Normality"* Aliens invade New York. Is there mass-panic? An uptick in religious renouncement? Bands of Scavengers making mini-terror1st armies with Alien tech? No, SHIELDS all encompassing reach manages to consume it all, somehow, and the idea of the world being made more chaotic as a result of this attempted invasion is only finally explored in Spiderman: Homecoming. People learn that Real Magic exists with Doctor Strange. How does this effect society? Do the 4 Wizard Schools see a sudden increase in new members? Do certain religious groups want to k1ll them? Thats my problem, Society never changes from things that would massively change it IRL.

Marvel has actually addressed this very issue, periodically, through the years. The first one I remember took place back in the 1980s, with a little four-page follow-up to a Fantastic Four story. Basically, it portrayed the impact a fight in the next town over, between the FF and the villain, had on the people who lived nearby. Essentially, the saw a press conference in which Reed Richards assured everybody that the crisis had been dealt with, and everything would be fine. However, he refused to go into any details, and essentially just issued routine reassurances. The response of the famiy was a shattering of their sense of security, just as you mentioned, here. Basically, in the Marvel universe (and DC, and most superhero settings), what happened in New York on 9/11 was just another Tuesday.

I think the main reason that makes the MCU so terrifying is not only about the frequency of disasters but also the variety. In most other franchises from Star Wars or Godzilla, the threats can usually be generalized into more giant monsters fighting or another galactic war. You can at least be hopeful that some day it might be over for good. The MCU on the other hand is a never ending parade of disasters. Everything from crazy billionaires to aliens to magic are out to kill you and it would only takes one of them to succeed for the world to goes to hell. The threat is formless and chaotic, trying to contain them all is like grabbing smoke with your bare hands. There is just no hope for peace.

When the average civilian has to worry about gods, magic, superhuman attacks, or just evil gangster clowns causing havok for giggles, having a bunch of superheroes "turn evil" and take over the world "for it's own good" might not sound like such a bad idea. If you are focusing on the worst places to be alive, you should also do the universe of Berserk. That is probably about as gets for terrible universes to live because, in addition to all the monsters, not even death ends your suffering because everyone basically goes to Hell when you die. For some other examples; -Devilman. Probably the second worst anime world to live in next to Berserk. Humanity is doomed to be wiped out in a war with demons, who will die along with us. Then God recreates the world, and the cycle starts all over again. -One Punch Man. Imagine a superhero series where the fear factor of all the destruction from the supervillains isn't glossed over. You get this. Don't be fooled by the premise of focusing on an invincible protagonist, the series' hero, Saitama, may be invincible, but everyone else isn't, and Saitama often isn't around when he's needed. This once nearly led to the destruction of humanity as Saitama failed to arrive to stop a supervillain, and the other heroes had to save the world. It is frequently brought up that the Hero Association charged with protecting the world is understaffed, suffers from incompetent management, and most of the heroes it does recruit are out of their league against the threats they are supposed to stop. Dune. You have a sci-fi verse under the rule of feudalism that is stagnant thanks to the political machinations of the Great Houses and various cutthroat organizations. Even when the old order is overthrown, it leads to a terrible war against the new emperor. The next emperor becomes the worst tyrant in human history to scatter humanity in an elaborate scheme to prevent our extermination by something far worse. It works, but the road to humanity's salvation walks through hell. One Piece. Do not be fooled by the goofy aesthetic, this world is a shit hole. There is a GIANT population of super criminals who either have superpowers from anime training or from magic fruit. The military/law enforcement opposing them is hopelessly corrupt and serves the whims of evil politicians who are only concerned about maintaining their iron fist at any cost.

Most times you have magic, but your technological level is medieval. So robots and space travel are unheard of. Others, you have advanced technlogy. That allows everything from enhanced individuals, to faster than light travel. But something like magic and gods is unheard of. But with Marvel and DC, you have everything, at the same time. There is no concept present in any alternate worlds, as unique as it may be, that doesn't also exist in those realities. Except for the problem of trying to oppress the guy who can turn his body into living steel, or shoot bone-shattering concussive blasts from his eyes, or can just fly. And the perennial favorite: how does the average person tell the difference between the person who can benchpress a loaded semi because they won the genetic lottery and the one who can do so because of an unreproducible science accident? This can be sidestepped if the average person doesn't care, but traditionally, Marvel's civvies have cared.

After Endgame, the MCU stopped giving a timeline of events because the events would be too congested. That or too many projects are being released to provide an accurate count. So who knows post Endgame, how dangerous it is living on Earth with multiverse shenanigans, blip related trauma, alien tyrants, and unstable governments.

True, we live at perhaps the most disorienting period of history. I remember seeing the later moon landings on TV and being told this was big, a turning point in history. Then learning about the many turning points that had come in just the few decades prior, the World Wars, the Great Depression, the advent of TV and cars and whatnot. And it has only accelerated from there. The MCU takes this fact of modern life and amps it up to 11. In fact, the Blip (Thanos' snap) was likely a step too far: it has been rightly criticized as a true singularity event, something that would break all of history and society. Going forward, Marvel really ought to follow a different timeline, with a better sense of keeping things under control. At the current point, in 2023, everyone must be worn out and desperate for leaders who can promise stability going forward, even if they have to expend most of the American nuclear arsenal to create the conditions for it.

Reminds me of when I argued with a friend about how "baseline" Gotham City is a safer place to live than Metropolis, for the average person. Sure you have about 48 different gangs, a clown themed psycho who tortures and kill whoever he meets, and the most corrupt police force of the DC universe. But honestly, that isn't very far away from the place I grew up! You lock your doors, keep your chin down when passing by the cops, avoid dark alleys at night, make some prayers, and maybe you can live enough to retire in the less horrible part of the city, or if you're luck, you go to a calmer place (pretty sure green lantern came from a city where nothing happens when he's not there, and he's almost never there). Now, lets talk about baseline Metropolis. Even if you ignore the whole Snyderverse careless Superman going through buildings, the place is a nightmare. Let's assume Superman main priority when fighting is to take the danger away from the city. Not only more of his villains will exploit that and start doing more damaging actions, as much as he has super hearing and speed, he can't react before something horrible go down. You have an evil Tony Stark openly trying to kill him every other Tuesday, with bigger and stronger radioactive armaments, and that's the smallest threat. From time to time, a gigantic gray alien made of spikes and space steroids will planetfall into the city and murder an entire city block before supes shows up. Then their fight will probably take down one building. Then there's the space google cosplaying as Jeff Bezos who comes to the city and disintegrates a few streets in the name of knowledge or something. Let's not forget about goth Thanos, Zod, Metallo, Bizzarro, the imp with weird name, all those people have the power to implode most of Metropolis in a matter of seconds, they often don't live there, so they're not worried about collateral damage to their business, and they go there specifically because Superman is there! Gotham tries to kill you everytime you cross the street, and the chances are about 50-50, but you can better those odds in your favor with some basic city survival skills. Metropolis is killing entire neighborhoods and no amount of understanding the place will better your odds when the next demigod of death shows up and Superman is 1 second too late.

And now add to this the mental pressure on the heroes. Batman may be responsible for half the crazies in Gotham, and his NOT killing them makes him responsible for their victims whenever they escape Arkham. Superman is super super, but he cannot save everybody. Essentially he is choosing whom he saves and whom he lets die. Check the Irredeemable comic for what happens when he snaps. Hint: it makes Injustice look like a toddler spat. Someone asks the super super character what it feels like to be him. He answers, "pick ten."

My biggest issue with superhero movies has always been that they make very little effort to discuss the deeper implications of the stories they're trying to tell - say what you want about Batman versus Superman, but I do think it was one of the few movies that tried to some extent (and in a rather disjointed way, tbf) to build a plot on how real people would react to the society-shattering changes of a world where super humans are real
@jathrucranli4201
@jathrucranli4201 Год назад
Chuck Dixon and/or Graham Nolan have some videos discussing that kind of thing, and, while Chuck is the kind of Batman writer who likes going into the logistics of how things would work in-world, he notes that, at its heart, Batman is childhood wish-fulfillment fantasy that exists in a world that, while it may be close to the real world, is a more artistic and fantastic kind of world where you just have colorful costumed characters that you'd be hard-pressed to find the likes of which existing in real life. Just because the fiction has fantastic elements doesn't mean it needs to get all nihilistic, bleak, and un-fun. :)

The problem is that it didn't do it in a very believable way, and didn't do it in an authentically Superman way either. There is a good movie to be made about Superman's role and relation to normal society, but Zack Synder doesn't know how to make it.

I used to think the biggest problems ordinary citizens in the MCU would face would be rising insurance premiums and the annoyance of superheroes breaking physical laws willy-nilly. But as you've so masterfully said, the psychological and emotional damage would be much, much worse... Come to think of it, being a non-Jedi civilian in the Star Wars universe would suck for many of the same reasons presented here.

The thought of living every day worried about "is this the day that myself or someone I know are going to get destroyed by some random superpowered ________" would be a horrible way to live. How many times in the comics do random locations, buildings, cities or just people end up as a casualty of some random event. How many people die every time Superman or Thor punch a bad guy through a building or get punched through a building themselves? Very dark to think about, but it's hard to comprehend how a society can move forward with the constant level of destruction they would be seeing on a weekly basis.

What the Marvel universe really needs is some body like the Global Defense Agency from Invincible, some organization to provide stability and act as a bedrock for the world. In the MCU that was SHIELD, but they got basically annihilated in Captain America 2. At this point, there's no civilian body in the world able to rein in superheroes, there's no regulatory agency for these godlike beings, no institution you can rely on. This is important, because institutions are a lot easier to trust than the whims of individuals.

Some random person in the corner of the screen, running for their lives (and likely failing) from the interdimensional super-threat on screen... ... and then realize you will probably never be as important as that random person. At least they were nearby when stuff happened.

Not to mention, despite the fact that modern superhero movies take judicious care not to show humans dying or red blood anywhere, the absolutely insane amounts of destruction visible in every movie (measures from city blocks to cities to half the fucking universe) should leave people both immensely angry and hollow from recurring grief. I am surprised the movies just put some happy music and a heroic pose and pretend the day is won and everything has gone back to normal - where are the round-the-clock protests and lawsuits against Stark, or the world governments trying to arrest these people (possibly unsuccessfully, but still), or even some crazy dude with a gun killing Black widow, hawkeye, etc out of revenge?

Is it for the best or the worst, that, for the most part, supervillains (and antiheroes) take turns engaging in destruction and mayhem in the MCU? (like we get Wanda, Hel, Thanos, Loki, Kilmonger, etc...as opposed to teaming up, ala Sinister Six)
@lmao2302

I remember there was this alternate marvel universe comic where all the villains decided to team up, and since they massively outnumber the heroes they killed all of them and took over the world. I think that same exact thing would happen in the MCU, is what I say would if they actually kept their villains. I forgot most of them tend to die in these movies. But yeah it's significantly better they don't fight together.
