The Massasauga Rattlesnake: A Victim of Fear

Great Big Story

Like most snakes, the massasauga rattlesnake fears humans more than humans should fear it. Ontario's only venomous snake, the massasauga prefers to flee rather than bite its enemies. Unfortunately, the snake can't hide from increasing human development and intentional killings, which have greatly reduced its Canadian population.

My very first rattlesnake encounter was with one of these along the Bruce Trail near High Dump. It had been cold and raining for a few days, so when the sun came out and the temperature went up a bit, conditions were perfect. The little guy we found was just sunning himself by the side of the trail, but I didn't see him. However, I heard a buzz that was more like a cicada, and it's amazing how your brain says "that'sarattlesnakeyou'veneverseenonebutthisisonemoveyourlegsandgo." My friend told me I jumped about twenty feet in two steps. We did come back a little bit just to get a better look, but we were careful to give him some space. We headed north and heard him stop his rattling, so all was well. Anyways, years later, my friend took his family to one of the interpretive centers at Bruce Trail National Park, where they showed off one of these guys, just like you're seeing here. The ranger explained that this is a shy snake, as in the video, and he indicated that the majority of bites reported at the hospital in Tobermory were to the hands and face, and often involved alcohol (Meaning: "Dummies who were trying to impress someone with their Molson-inspired bravado."). Frankly, this snake is endangered/threatened in many areas, so it's best to just appreciate it and leave it alone. If you're frightened of snakes but feel a need to kill one, just head in the other direction, as harming one could get you into trouble.

There is also a thing called a "dry bite" where they don't add venom to their bite. That is what usually happens when they bite people in defense.
@keeneyeful
@keeneyeful 5 лет назад
From my reading 25% of bites are dry bites www.wpshc.com/index.php/ontario-antivenom-depot-117 So just stay clear of them, I hike A LOT in this area and have yet to see one, even when going looking for them... Regardless if you DO get bit, call 911 and get EMS/Paramedic Services take you to the hospital. Read up on first aid care for these bites, and prevent them from happening...

We get ‘em here in Michigan, too. Encounters are pretty rare outside of swamps, though.

What's cool is that instead of being of the genus "Crotalus" like most rattlesnakes, it's of the genus "Sistrurus", the same as the "pigmy rattlesnake".. And the patterns on both are very similar albeit different colors..

Deadly Kitty Cat Two closely related native tribes say the word slightly differently, but they both mean the same thing, which is "great river-mouth."

Adlee Jaafar nothing to feel guilty of, just give it it's space and let them live. I have only seen one and it's a beautiful snake. you won't find one normally unless your around Lake Huron

Nothing wrong with that, they are purposely trying to get people to feel pity for this species because of it's lower numbers but DO NOT buy into it! My son was bit by one of these, it was VERY aggressive and came after him when he was leaving it alone! It put him in the hospital for ten days and he was in critical condition for a while.

"More afraid of humans than we are of it." I seriously, seriously doubt that. At least, not in all cases. Personally, I appreciate snakes and never kill them. That simply cannot be said of everyone.
@klayman2
@klayman2 Год назад
you really think a small animal isn't afraid of a 5-6ft tall creature walking up on it randomly in its home lol they're 100% more afraid of any human that comes up on them, if they weren't they'd be randomly striking every hiker
@mikeashawasegai7530
@mikeashawasegai7530 8 месяцев назад
I work with them, they're scared of anything bigger than it. That being said their venom isn't meant for attacking people its meant for subduing prey(mice, vole, squirrels) and the thing that's meant for threats is its rattle

Sure, these sweet little fellers wouldn't hurt a flee! Sure! Put my son in the hospital for about ten days! The snake was very aggressive and went after my son when my son was leaving it alone. The venom is VERY dangerous!
@unfortunately_fortunate2000
the only way your son could have been bit is if he heard the snakes warning & chose to fuck with it regardless, you're placing the blame on the wrong animal.
@pioneerman4417
@pioneerman4417 Год назад
Not to mention, snakes don't "go after" people. Plenty of research shows this just isn't true. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose. They ONLY Go after prey items.
