About the pink paste: I believe this quest was actually based off of the Quaker Oats lawsuit, a lawsuit that took place in Massachusetts. Specifically, MIT and Quaker Oats fed 100(ish) children at Fernald School in Waltham radioactive cereal to prove nutrients in Quaker Oats traveled through the body (or something like that). The children were not informed and in 1998 the lawsuit against MIT and Quaker Oats was settled for 1.85 million dollars. The experiment itself took place in the 40s and 50s. All of this to say, I think pink paste is a reference to the radioactive oats experiment.

Arthur Maxon is an odd character in general. He's supposed to be 20 in Fallout 4 but he looks like a grizzled war vet. You could argue that war and stress ages you harder but he looks 10 years older than he's supposed to be. I also never understood why the Capital Wasteland brotherhood had Maxon with them seeing as he's basically royalty and the CW group was just a small offshoot of the main brotherhood.

I like to think that Sarah Lyons was only assumed dead, but she's actually still alive somewhere out there. Fodder for another game perhaps.

I always wished Sarah was the elder in fallout 4. Sarah was so cool to me when I first played fallout 3 and her and her father are a huge reason why the brotherhood are my favorite faction in fallout. I hate how she was killed off screen and how brutal Maxim can be is so jarring to how nice Lyons was.

I think oxhorn talked about it somewhere where he said that the brotherhood just completely glosses over the feats that Sarah Lyons and Elder Lyons did in that capital wasteland. They Defeated the Enclave, took out their other base, brought fresh water to the wasteland and are always fighting muties. For them to just gloss over that stuff was extremely wild.

Another fun fact about the EU copies of classic Fallout: for the UK release of Fallout 2, calling the different medical items drugs was not allowed, and instead they were renamed to chems. This name stuck for some reason, and now it’s canon to call things chems and not drugs.

about the maxton rise to power, undoubtedly there was something fishy, but I'd honestly be more inclined to believe the outcasts were involved, rather than western elders one detail about the wizard of oz similitude, the road that goes from the think tank to the 3 main facilities has some areas with a clear yellow tint on the bricks, making it a litteral yellow brick road

An entire episode covering the S'Lanters would be interesting. Another reason they may have been cut is the characters and design of their areas was very close to TSR's Gamma World's Badders (intelligent badgers)

I definitely thought that Sarah Lyons' death was a political assassination from the moment I read that terminal entry. It just seems too damn convenient for her death to have led to a teenager being made Elder. Arthur may be skilled in combat, but I don't believe for a second that he was the most qualified out of ALL the members of the CW Brotherhood, especially when Elder Lyons had a whole team of skilled high-level people other than just his daughter - are we to believe that someone like Star Paladin Cross or Head Scribe Rothschild couldn't have done the job? I think the traditionalists purposefully picked a string of incompetent Elders to buy time for Arthur to get old enough to be made a leader without him being *blatantly* a figurehead. And of course, for them to have done a bad enough job that a sixteen year old child seemed like a good option.

You missed a "secret synth" thing. It's not a specific character, but any time you recruit a generic settler character to one of your settlements, there's a chance they'll secretly be a synth. This can be discovered by either having them drop a synth component should a raid on that settlement kill them off, or by the fact that should you earn the ire of the Institute, these random settlers-due to being synths-are in the Institute faction, so you'll have one of your settlers suddenly start attacking you the second you come back to a settlement.

I had a thought a while ago that the whole of The Commonwealth's population is in fact nothing but synths, and that the whole game, even the endings in which The Institute was apparently destroyed, was in fact part of a grander social engineering experiment done by The Institute, an experiment greater than *_anything_* Vault Tech came up with. They'd replace the totality of Commonwealth's populace with synths, watch what happens to simulate a post-apocalyptic environment both in-situ and in-vitro simultaneously in order to come up with the ideal situations for rebuilding and reshaping the world to achieve a utopian existence while testing technologies that they would use to achieve it. All the while the game would be going on, the *_REAL_* Institute would be holed up in an even deeper underground bunker facility that goes even further underground than the one we see in-game. They'd orchestrate the whole thing from start to finish, possibly multiple times over to account for hidden or unseen variables (got to run experiments more than one time after all), rebuild everything in-between, then start the whole thing up all over again, so even the playthroughs that we do have a meta-existent reason for existing in Fallout 4. The notion that synths don't always drop synth components was my mental "evidence" of this. I took it as meaning, "Synths don't always drop *_intact_* synth components that your character would pick up" rather than the notion that there were no robotic pieces there at all.

So basically F2 had their own Children of Atom but with raccoons instead

I like your point on Maxson & Sarah Lyons but a question I've always wondered and never gotten answer to is whether not Bethesda directly acknowledges FO 1, 2, and NV lore. They have carried over a fair amount of FO 1 & 2 lore(Harold, Brotherhood of Steel, the FEV, the Enclave), especially considering that, IIRC, it's directly stated on a terminal(nevermind the name itself) that Arthur Maxson is the DIRECT ANCESTOR to Roger Maxson, who is a pre-war military captain(so the lineage goes back far), and the creator of the Brotherhood of Steel. As far as I've experienced however, there's little crossover between the West and the East coasts. I like the idea that the West coast is somehow still a strong force and is in contact with the East coast, but given Fallout New Vegas, the situation seems a little grim. So maybe it has something to do with the "inner circle" Christine was part of, something that probably would've been established post-Fallout 2(as in Fallout 2, the Brotherhood is mysteriously absent with exception to one person, presumably the same person, you meet throughout several areas that gives you hints and access to brotherhood bunkers throughout the game. In Fallout 2, I think the implication is that the Brotherhood had to go into hiding for a bit due to the 'war' with the Enclave, and you can see this in New Vegas too with the Hidden Valley bunker. Some kind of organization controlling the Maxson bloodline would make sense overall though, as throughout all the games it's been a consistent fact that the Brotherhood as a whole is very traditional and very uptight about its rules. Any sort of change would cause issues within the organization as a whole, and it's made clear in FO3 that the Capital Wasteland Brotherhood is not exactly keeping to its roots, and the outcasts defecting probably don't help the situation either. So, to summarize, you're probably right on most accounts with exception to *who* would be controlling Maxson is something that seems to be the missing puzzle piece, as even if you consider that Maxson himself orchestrated all of this, you'd have to wonder how a child would've planned the coup, for something that he was already entitled to as per his bloodline. IIRC the same terminal in FO3 details that the plan is for Maxson to grow up until he's fit to lead. It's an interesting part of Fallout's lore because ultimately the Brotherhood, outside of the Enclave, is THE pre-war remnants of the Fallout universe. Nothing pre-war really exists outside of smaller 'factions' e.g. The Think Tank, The Institute if you don't destroy it, The Enclave if they somehow still exist, although speaking on The Enclave, they almost certainly have bases all over the US as a concerted effort to have post-war military presence as opposed to The Brotherhood, which has its roots in a single military installment at a military base who then abandoned the location after the war to then make their own faction.

it's been a while since I played far harbour but I remember the conversation with DiMA about the SS's potential synthhood and having nick as my companion (which, by the way, if you don't have nick as your companion while playing FH you're missing out on a LOT lol) if the SS chooses the option that's something like "I could be a synth, I don't know" I remember nick vehemently responding that you're definitely not a synth. I might be misremembering because it's been some time but I always remembered that as sort of a funny interaction

I think the Fallout 4 protagonist had forgotten much of their past before being frozen as a side effect of being held in cryogenic stacis for so long.

Another read on the "Puppet-Maxon" idea could be that his appointment was a solution. Like, after Sara Lyon's death took the BoS by surprise, we'll assume, and after a couple of these ineffectual leaders with no prepared vision or ambition, Arthur was chosen because he showcased a natural willingness to combat the Brotherhood's enemies and was a useful figurehead to rally the CW Brotherhood around to avoid further fragmentation.

Paladin Danse is also a Synth. Designation M7-97. There are many theories as to why he in the Brotherhood...such as being a runaway synth, reprogrammed by the railroad or a sleeper agent who never completed his mission due to some errors in his programming.

You can know what things are without actually remembering them. There is a specific from of amnesia where that happens. It's possible to forget your past but still remember how to do math. Work a car and tie your shoes. So knowing about things prewar is no proof the SS has memories of life pre war.

Most of those synths are mentioned to be synths from either quests or other characters telling you

I’ve toyed with the idea of making s’lanter “canon” by incorporating their backstory for the Hairy Deathclaws in Tactics. Of course, that’s not canon either and I don’t work for Bethesda or Interplay, I’m just some guy. But it’d be fun homebrew for the 2d20 game.

I absolutely agree with the whole Sarah Lyons theory! Definitely never felt right finding out that she pasted the way we do. Such an important Character in FO3 to just find out that she died less then 2 years after FO3 always felt Crazy! And with such little information about it I dunno have to agree that there should have been more for such a memorable character that played such a Large Role in hundreds of hours spent in the Capital Wasteland

You seem to be deliberatly skipping over some dialog with DiMA and the console in the Institute (Todd's secret). Your character says plainly he does not remember anything but that day. The console is about the new courser with the ability to use VATS.

"It's a Good Life" on the Twilight Zone was both funny and infuriating to my dad and me. There is this obnoxious brat with godlike powers that can transform people with his thoughts if he doesn't get his way and has done this to cats and dogs just because he found them annoying. So, we have a psychopath, or serial killer in the works. There are so many comical ways to get rid of him for good that no one used.
