Are you one of the folks out there who's never tried to master their own music? Or has and cringed?
The big problem here is a lack of awareness of the mastering process and what it's capable of.
I think people are scared of trying to master their own music and the perception is that it's so complicated they don't even try.
For that reason, I'm starting to publish my full mastering sessions as videos. I peel back the veil and let you see the entire process. Check the card and link below this video to see my mastering sessions.
I didn't always master music for a living, but, pretty early on I started to try my hand at doing my own test masters.
As soon as I started making test masters of my own music, my mixing skills took a huge level up.
Why? Because as soon as you run your mix into a limiter, it'll shine a bit spotlight on a ton of errors in your mix.
So even if you don't want to master your own music, try this. Take your mix, run it into a limiter and increase the gain into the limiter until you reach the same loudness level as your reference track.
Then A/B back and forth. Does your master sound like a piece of hot garbage in contrast? Then go back to the mix.
What do you do in the mix? What's the problem? Watch THIS video on the biggest mistake in mixing.

Great work as ever mate. Appreciate this as im getting up there with the gain reduction currently and now i have a direction to head. Very grateful. I enjoy the long videos too man, your insights are more detailed and much deeper than other channels whilst still being efficient and explained incredibly well. Dont doubt yourself brother keep the videos as long as what feels good. We are all still gonna watch and learn. Thanks again man.

Thanks Ryan. I appreciate the feedback on that. Funny enough, I just shot a 2 video series on how I prep my masters and then a full deep dive into a mastering session and chain. Both ended up being quite long as there is a lot of detail to discuss about each topic, so I'm glad there's an appetite for longer videos. Cheers and all the best with your production and mixes!

I learned two things today. One about the limiter and looking at the mix. I was scared about any of this. But yeah I feel good as James Brown stated.

This is a really interesting Idea. I think me and a lot of Producers I know have kind of been doing this in a "reversed order" for quite a while. Usually a Clipper is loaded up on the master and then you just mix into that Clipper. That way while you are mixing you are working at a very high loudness already which allows you to adapt the mix in a way where it can be pushed much louder in comparison to mixes that where originally mixed rather quiet and then turned up later on by unhealth amounts to reach the desired levels.

Indeed both are interchangeable approaches. A clipper after all is just a brickwall limiter with no attack and release settings, meaning it's sample by sample math. The main difference between a clipper and a limiter is that a limiter will be more transparent. You can only push a clipper so far before it makes your entire song sound like a square wave and it all breaks apart. I use clipping more in my mixing process heavily, and then on the master more lightly.

Loved this one! So right about fixing the things where they should be fixed, in the mix!

Glad you enjoyed this one. Yeah, this comes from working with so many songs at the mastering stage and having to send them back for mix changes as soon as I run the song into a limiter. It's immediately obvious what needs to change, so mixers and artists should be doing this during their process to help improve results by catching issues early. Fix it in the mix. Cheers!

Prime pro tips as always! Tantalizing as short-format know-how nuggies may be, the quality and vast quantities of invaluable, easy-to-digest information injected into your longer videos absolutely retain (at the very least, mine) attention -- rest assured that they're thoroughly appreciated regardless of length.

Oh yeah mixing is a complex and very difficult skill to learn. Luckily there are many people who are experienced engineers teaching it on RU-vid and via online courses. Go follow them and learn.
