One of their earlier songs, A Dog, a Siren and Memors, I always considered it would have been a fitting ending for the film Red Dog. Saw them live at the local institute when I was 15, The Masters Apprentices one of the first albums I bought, unique backing riff on Undecided.

I used to play alto sax in High School and this song is designed to basically fall out of an alto sax, and so every kid learns it. Or used to. It's almost like "chopsticks" on the piano. Just before Jim Keays passed on, he was a patient of mine, and I thanked him for this song . He said that the best song he ever wrote was a song called...and we went into unison "It's Because I Love You". He fixed his eyes on me and said "Most people think that's called 'Do What You Wanna Do Be What You Wanna Be. That song has seen me through a lot of hard times, Matthew." "You've got an ad on at the moment for Jeeps I see." I was referring to the 70 year anniversary of Jeep ads we had featuring a 70 year old ex-footballer called Tommy Hafey I used to train with at the gym. "I do? Shit, Matt, they've used that song to sell everything now." He was more interested in my shitty little pub band, and the people we knew in common. Wanted to know how I knew Tommy, and when he found the singer and guitar player and I were good mates with Tommy's nephew, a very good blues harp player he was so stoked I had trouble getting an IV line in him. He kept jumping around. He didn't live a lot longer, but he was, like most of the former stars I have met, massively down to earth and a decent bloke.

Around that time in Australia, everything was nuts. Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs "Mama, live on GTK" was/is berserk! The funny thing was, it was filmed, drug soaked and manic, a mad jam, shown before the ever so staid 7pm ABC News! It remains one of the great heart starters, an early heavy rock song, one of the first.

How on earth did I miss this reaction? They wrote this song as a protest to radio stations that wouldn't play their music, because, they said, they were too loud. So they thought, "Loud you say? We'll give you loud!" They also have a beautiful ballad, their first big hit I think 🤔, don't quote me on that, called It's because I love you.

Hi. Because of its isolation, Australia had a great little music scene, especially in the 70's and 80's. Bands like Mental as Anything (If You Leave Me Can I Come Too and The Nips Are Getting Bigger), or The Radiators (Coming Home or Give Me Head). We had our Kiwi invasion, bands like Dragon or Misex. The pub rock scene in Melbourne in the 60's& 70's was hard and fast loud and rock solid with Billy Thorpe, The Twilights, The EasyBeats, Axiom in the late sixties then in the 70's we had Skyhooks, Sherbert, Hush, Lobby Loyde, Kevin Borich, ACDC Stevie Wright, Split Ends, Dragon, TMG and many more who just made the pub scene huge so every week you had so many choices to go see who ever you wanted but they didn't just play in pub's they played everywhere so if you were to young to get into the pub you could see them in halls and out door's concerts as well it was fantastic

Masters Apprentices became super popular again in the late 80s - we were right into them when I was in high school. I think it was when their greatest hits album was released and this track was all over the radio. It used to pack the dance floor at a school formal. I'm pretty sure we were the only country where the DJ at a school formal followed a Prince Song with Turn up your Radio.

Looking for Masters Apprentices from the legendary Swedish band 'Opeth' I bumped into this Australian treat of yours: The Masters Apprentice, never heard of them too, fantastic footage, great energie. These tracks do remind me of The Sonics ("live at easy street" is great) from the sixties, they are probably the inspiration for this Aussie band. Check it out, you will see/hear the resemblance. The Hives from Sweden are in the same genre, they are the modern equivalent, a super energetic live band, for years they were headlining the big festivals. Back to the start; Swedish Opeth: don't do them, not here, not in private, it really is to heavy;-) Bye.

A boatload of acid. You betcha, I had my share, but something more rare, but I had access - was Mescaline. I have no way of telling how muych damage it did to my young brain, but there was some benefits - as Leary said, drop acid, and experience god. After so many years literally hearing this on the radio, and turning it up, this is the first time I have seen the original video. I actually liked the camera work. Quite mad for the time. The Masters were brilliant. But I do love the Hoodo-Gurus version even better. Such a great Aussie classic song.

I've always liked Hoodoo Gurus and I've never heard this song version... but Dave Faulkner's voice for this song... he's got nothing on Jim Keays

Not convinced this has stood the test of time, I would be surprised if Jim could talk after the recording. Cheers.

Those dancers at the end tag take me back to the old English imported shows with the Pan's People (I think) dancers and those othe dancers called the Young? or New? Generation. When I see the backing dancers on The Graeme Norton Show these days, I think that nothing much has changed in that department over there, except that there are no more brollies, shiny macs and gumboots. We had copies of those type of backing dance routines in the 60's/70's too which Gina Riley (Kim of KATH AND KIM) sent up hilariously. Still on you tube. THE SATURDAY SHOW.

Take a look at The Party Boys doing the John Kongos classic "He's Gonna Step On you Again". Great musicians and a great singer with a little known Englishman on bass (great player).

I remember in Oz in the late 60s there was a dispute between the radio stations and English labels (probably over money / royalties or something) that resulted in the stations having a ban on most if not all english music. Can't remember how long it went for but I do remember a mate saying " Oh great now all we're gonna have to listen to is the Beach Boys' cotton fields . We were both very depressed at the prospect. Perhaps that event had something to do with the evolution of Oz Rock.

Party song of all party songs , Jim Keays had some amazing gigging stories . In the 70s you could just leave your job sign on to the dole and not look for work thanks to the Labor Government , there were bands everywhere and live pub gigs everywhere , Some bands would play 3 gigs a night ,no one was getting rich you could do it because you had a dole check coming in

This is from the Australian TV show "Uptight" where that camera zoom in & out was used a lot. Even in '68 I found Uptight cringeworthy.
