The good old days The Masters Apprentices (or The Masters to fans) were an Australian rock band fronted by Jim Keays on lead vocals, which originally formed as The Mustangs in 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia, relocated to Melbourne, Victoria in February 1967 and attempted to break into the United Kingdom market from 1970 before disbanding in 1972. Their popular Australian singles are "Undecided", "Living in a Child's Dream", "5:10 Man", "Think About Tomorrow Today", "Turn Up Your Radio" and "Because I Love You". The band launched the career of bass guitarist Glenn Wheatley,[3] who later became a music industry entrepreneur and an artist talent manager for both Little River Band and John Farnham. The band reformed periodically, including in 1987-1988 and again subsequently; they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame at the ARIA Music Awards of 1998 Both Keays, with His Master's Voice and Wheatley, with Paper Paradise, wrote memoirs in 1999 which included their experiences with the band. Onetime guitarist Peter Tilbrook also released the biography A Masters Apprentice, Living In The Sixties in 2015. Peace out
It never ceases to amaze me how people feel the need to itemise a band's history in the comments when it is freely available on the web!!! Help us all!!
Now you’re talking! One of the greats of late 60s early 70s Oz Rock. This song came out in 1970 hence “15 years and you still remember how”; a reference to 1955 and the start of Rock n Roll - Rock Around the Clock. They had a big hit with a ballad, It’s Because I Love You; I still love it when I hear it. RIP Glenn Wheatley RIP Jim Keays
Well that was a pleasant surprise. These guys are one of those Aussie bands you just grow up with here (well if you're around my age anyway - they were definitely part of my 1970s childhood hearing). Glenn by the way is the blonde guy on the right hand side of the 4. I saw Jim & the boys in the early 2000s as part of the Long Way to the Top tour - and hoo nellie - he hadn't lost anything.. not the looks (he was still so cute!!!!) or the voice - he was still belting it out brilliantly. It's Because I Love You is one of those songs practically imprinted on our DNA.
Many years ago, at a street festival, I saw Darryl Cotton, Jim Keays and Russel Morris perform together . They did all their old 60/70s classics and sounded exactly the same as they did on the old black and white clips. It was hilarious watching the reactions of people who were too young to know who they were. These guys, live, were miles better than today's manufactured stuff.
@@samuraidarryl I'm Darryl's 2nd cousin...never met him! He was overseas when I was growing up, then when he returned to Australia he moved to Melbourne, it just never came to pass. Knew his Dad (Brian) well (he also did from liver cancer around the same age too), still talk to mum (Gloria) semi-regularly and when I was a kid, Darryl's grandmother Marge was my after-school carer.
@@digimontexcelguy1114 shame you never got to meet. Was a fave performer. That night we went is a highlight that we still talk of. Always appeared to be a genuine nice guy. Great artist eh 👍
Love, love, love this song. Without doubt one of my favourite rock songs of my youth. Never disappoints when I hear it. This is an Australian classic. We are really having some awesome reactions lately!👍
Well it's about time you got to more 60's and 70's Aussie music, I love masters apprentices. This particular song was written in protest to certain radio stations who refused to play their music, saying it was too loud. So they thought 💭🤔"Loud?! We'll give you loud!" 🤣 None of their stuff sounded like the other and one of their sweetest songs was "It's because I love you", which became a bit of an anthem in the late 60's. I sang it to an Egyptian lady friend of mine, when her hubby had to go away and she just melted and it made her feel more at ease. You'll understand why once you hear it. Other favourites are Undecided and Living in a child's dream.
Yes John Farnham only just lost his manager / friend about three months back even mortgaged his home to get behind Farnham's Whispering Jack tour. Lotta Love between those two boys.
One of my favorite tracks from a great Australian band from back in the day. Some of the people making requests on your channel, it's like they are reaching into the dark recesses of my childhood memories and highlighting forgotten gems such as this! Love it!!
So glad this made the list! It's a totally gotta get up and dance song that uplifts you while it rocks and rolls! Been a fave of mine forever. Hope it newly reaches and delights many ears!
Lead singer is Jim Keays, wish you hadn't mentioned his slug now it's something you can't unsee. Another band from the same time is Chain with Matt Taylor, check out Black and Blue and l remember when I was young both great songs with the same rawness
@@suave-rider ah whoops! I had a super quick scroll thru the vid when it first popped up, didn't realise it was mentioned in the intro which I skipped over . My bad.
Very fortunate to being in my late teens growing up in Adelaide in mid to late 1960s when the Adelaide bands were taking Australia by storm. Not only the Masters, but Twilights, Zoot ( who can't forget their Eleanor Rigby version) and Mississippi (which morphed into Little River Band). We were spoilt for choice as many fine musos joined other big name groups later. Their relocations to Melbourne was inevitable given the opportunity to have 3 times the population but their original fan base who by supporting them at the Oxford Club, St Clairs and the Octagon etc (what memories) gave them the incentive to try their luck interstate. I can proudly be called parochial in this instance as "Little Adelaide, the city of churches" was if not the birth place, was certainly the nursery of the Australian late 60s Rock scene ...... Living in a Child's dream definitely. Cheers
Glen Wheatley was the blonde on the right. Jim Keays, lead singer also passed away a few years ago aged 67. This group was huge around this time. Other bangers are, It's because I love you I'm your satisfier ( this one will surprise you, must watch the official video lol)
Stevie Wright is another Aussie legend you need to check out. He was originally the lead singer of The Easybeats, which included George Young,( eldest brother of Angus and Malcolm Young from ACDC). Check out Stevie's solo work, Evie partI,II,III
@@DebraBing saw them in Torquay in 79 when I did my obligatory surf trip East from WA on completion of my apprenticeship. Boards on top of my HR Sedan, girlfriend and mate as co pilots. They did a couple of months stint at the Sovereign Hotel and at $2 cover charge we were there at least once a weekend ! Raw , loud , choking on smoke, loving every minute ! 6 months later get back to Perth, check the paper for pub bands...The Masters at the White Sands.!!! Great times, great music and " unreal " memories ! Keep rocking girl !😎👍
@@davidkeep6526 oh great memories!! I loved my HR ute almost as much as the live music...... almost! I was twenty that year. Don't worry l still rock out in the kitchen! Same to you my friend! Never stop! 🤘🎸🎸
My first garage band from Adelaide, South Australia. The original drummer, Colin Burgess died a couple of days ago, 77. He went onto to be the foundation drummer of ACDC.
Glad it knocked your socks off ! One of my favourites back then Aussie bands had a great style and were harder than most English /American bands of the time . Hope you found out that Glen Wheatly was the blond bloke !
I am always looking for music from the 60's and 70's that I missed when growing up. I had not heard this before so thank you very much. My previous find from that era was the band Joy of Cooking. I should have Nick react to them.
This is an original sound of The Masters Apprentices with a rock and roll influence. And a very Australian pub sound. All Aussie bands were so hard working to make their music pay tje rent.
Glenn Wheatley is the blonde. I just love all this Aussie music😃 thanks. I was just a kid when all these great hits were coming out 😊😎 my Dad was strict and really didn't like his teenage daughters grooving with all this🤗😃🌈🇦🇺💞💞💞
The only preparation the band put into this video was to use a comb. Then the director decided his only prep was to zoom in, zoom out. But it was gold at the time.
The dude with the bulge is the late Glenn Wheatley who was John Farnhams manager. It is also said that the lead singer Jim Keays was drunk while singing this & that he had to be helped up to the microphone. His voice is phenomenal.
Guitarist and Groupys he was probably on with them before he went on stage happened to our lead singer once as they started a live set in a club in Melbourne but the show must go on no matter what...
I'm sure you have heard of the easybeats? Steve Wright was the lead vocalist. Friday on my mind, Evie parts 1, 2 and 3. Bernard fanning, lead singer of powderfinger, has done a cover of evie 1,2,3.
Bass guitars have 4 strings (generally). Simple to tell them apart in this clip. Bass is on the left (right of screen) in this clip (also quite common).
Glenn is very blonde with straight hair. Black shirt and white jeans. He always knew he would be a better manage than a Bass player. He still played in some of John’s video’s.
Daks: short for a dudes slacks/suit pants A full outfit was also called ‘duds’ as in better get your good duds on (as in nice clothes) were going out tonight!
