Reader’s Digest has called “Mathemagician” Arthur Benjamin “America’s Best Math Whiz.” Returning in an encore presentation, Arthur Benjamin displays feats of mental mathematical gymnastics and shares the secrets behind his skills. A combination of math and magic, this program will captivate the entire family.
Original Program Date: June 14th 2009
PARTICIPANT: Arthur Benjamin
ARTHUR BENJAMIN
Mathematician, Magician, Author
A professional magician, Arthur Benjamin can multiply large numbers faster than a calculator, figure out the weekday of any date in history, and has memorized the decimal numbers of Pi out to 100 digits. Anointed “America’s Best Math Whiz” by Reader’s Digest, Benjamin applied his skills to the game of backgammon and won the American Backgammon Tour in 1997. He is the author of several books, including Secrets of Mental Math. Benjamin is professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California.

That gift to Maddie seemed like a nice poster on the wall encouraging scientific thought and provide a mystery.

22:25 - that's a technique I stumbled upon on my own . . . it just makes sense . . . basically you are multiplying 2 numbers and then adding . . . break the biggest number down to the closest 10 unit - 27 would become 20 - then multiply the 20 by 5 and then multiply the remainder of 7 (the number left over from the 27) by 5 and then add the 2 numbers together . . . it is an amazingly efficient way of using that giant calculator in your head . . .

There were even more 34's in Maddies poster.....you get 34 by adding the number in any corner and the three numbers that run diagonally across the opposite corner. For example, 3 in the top left plus 1,14,and 16. This works in all 4 corners. Also, the two numbers on the left of top and bottom rows equal 34 (3,15,15,1). So do the two numbers on the right of the top and bottom rows. The same is true for the top 2 numbers in the left and right columns, as well as the bottom two numbers of the left and right columns :)

Yes, I were about to write the same thing. I am not sure if there is something I am missing, but it was clearly an ace of spaces on the top.

I'm crap at maths! To times 2 random 9 digit numbers together and get them just one digit wrong is infinitely NOT as clever as knowing 1 + 1 = 2, because 1 + 1 = 2 is the correct answer and being wrong is being wrong!
