I saw this movie when it first came out and I was totally blown away. I walked out of the theatre completely transformed because I had to look at reality completely differently. I did research on the names of the characters and watched the movie again and caught all kinds of details and foreshadowing. I could go on and on about The Matrix. It's still my favorite movie of all time. It is the best example of The Hero's Journey. The author of The Matrix is Sophia Stewart and she also wrote The Terminator. It was not just fiction. It was a government plan in the 1970s to enslave humanity into a virtual reality and have AI machines exterminate humanity. That's why Mark Zuckerburg is determined to lure us into go into his virtual reality. Thanks for the great reaction.

I think you guys missed the explanation of what the Agents are. They are sentient computer programs (almost like digital terminators) that can move in and out of any software still plugged into the Matrix which includes human's that haven't awoken from the simulation yet. People who haven't woken up from the Matrix are called "blue pills". Like Morpheus says, the Agents are everyone, and they are no-one. Agents are guarding all of the keys, and all of the doors in the Matrix. The people who are still plugged into the Matrix don't even know that the Agents exist at all because they are only designed to maintain any disruptions of the illusion from people (red pills) outside of the Matrix which is why Agent Smith interrogates Neo in that creepy room since Cypher (the guy who betrays Morpheus that is referred to as the Informant by the Agents at the beginning of the film) told the Agents that Neo was their next target, meaning Neo was the next person Morpheus would try to wake up from the Matrix simulation. The Agents did not want Morpheus to wake up any more people from the simulation, so Agent Smith offered Neo a deal that he refused, so they bugged him to trace his whereabouts. If they would have known that Neo was the One, they would have killed him right away, but they didn't.

You mentioned you thought some of the fight scenes were cheesy and as you're watching for the first time in 2023, I get that but I do want to say that, when the Matrix dropped in 1999, it was revolutionary. The creative team for the film invented so many new filming techniques, camera tricks, and they set new standards for cinematic fight scenes. Ask a film major about the impact the Matrix had on the craft and they'll give you a full-on dissertation. It really just was something so new and innovative and inspiring. Way ahead of its time for sure.
@johnplaysgames3120
@johnplaysgames3120 Год назад
Also, I think there's a related thing that happens when modern reactors watch movies from a couple of decades ago. So many times with a movie like "The Matrix" or "Terminator" (1 or 2) or similar movies, modern reactors will laugh about the apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic, or not-actually-modern science story being set within a few years of our current 2020s present (or some past year that didn't look anything like the movie). What they don't ever seem to put together is that the forecasted "present day" they're seeing in the movie is (in the case of the Terminator movies) one possible future that, in the course of the story, is undone before it happens, or (in the case of "The Matrix") a simulated 1998 that's based on that universe's history but doesn't necessarily reflect the real 1998 in every detail (e.g. the prevalence of slightly outdated communications devices). While I didn't get that specific thing from these folks, there's still the related point to be made that the "cheesy" moments look weird (at least partially) because the characters are inside a computer simulation and are (apparently) breaking the laws of physics (because, in the Matrix, the "physics" are just bits of code that can be bent or altered by a sufficiently awake and aware human mind). If you could suddenly break the laws of physics and run on walls, dodge bullets, flip through the air, etc. without any regard for actual weight, gravity, momentum, etc. it would probably look a little floaty and weird. I mean, heck, by the end of the movie, Neo doesn't even have to trick himself into thinking he has to run up a wall and do a flip... he just takes off and flies away like Superman. That being said, the cartwheels and whatnot *do* look a little floaty (and did to many of us who saw it back when the movie came out too) but I think a lot of that can be chalked up to "The Matrix" famously using a lot of the pro stunt and wire-work folk from Hong Kong cinema (the same team Keanu has continued to work with, right up into the John Wick movies). Wire-work is always going to have a certain amount of floatiness to the way it looks but a large portion of it can certainly be overcome or edited around. In a movie with so much prep and such incredible attention to detail -- especially the visual aspects -- I doubt they just did half-assed wire-work and went, "Yeah, whatever. That's good enough." In many movies, that slightly uncanny float-factor can detract a lot more but, in "The Matrix," it kind of works because of the inside-a-simulation/breaking-the-simulation setting. Imo.
@RubenDReyna
@RubenDReyna Год назад
@@johnplaysgames3120 I also think the "cheesiness" is furthermore caused by the amount of films that have taken inspiration from this film that have saturated the visual market for our brains 24 years later. At the time of this film, the wire-work looked unnatural, yet believable-but add to that 24 years of other films using those same methods to later parody this very film, and those scenes will look "cheesy" to our current audience.

When i watched it in 2000 I felt some of the stuff was cheesy then 🤷‍♀️ like intentional cheesy, not bad cheesy. Like neo extending his fingers to choke. It makes me laugh every time i see it. I don't use nor think the word cheesy is a pejorative, like drunken master ii and kung fu hustle are cheesy af, but i love em.

I saw The Matrix when it came out in theaters. Honestly, the friends I was with others, I spoke to, did not think anything about the movie was "cheesy." Both myself, my friends, some family that saw it and tons of others in school and people I socialized with at that time saw it to. No one back then ever considered it "cheesy" or thought of the walking on walks were "weird" or anything but simply just (if I remember correctly) along the lines of "cool," "awesome," or "rad" lol. East Asian action (specifically Hong Kong) movies inspired much of the wires for scenes. Some people may have found it strange, but it was done very well. If the actual movements during those scenes were laughable, then the movie would certainly not have gotten the praise it earned and still has to today. The same goes for other areas in the movie. The vast majority of people never found those parts of the movie "cheesy" at the time back then. Again, this came out in 1999. The majority of us then used dial-up, VHS, homephones, CDs, CRT tvs (average size 23 inch), computers had Windows 98, and average ram for computers was 4MB to 128MB. It was a different time over 24 years ago and a different world. Today, we have an entire different generation, and some of us people our own age (or older) when we saw it.

@eamon5883
@eamon5883 Год назад
The Matrix as a movie is pretty complex so i don't blame you guys for missing the explanation of how the Agents move from person to person. The scene where Morpheus is walking through the crowded street effortlessly and Neo is struggling is where Morpheus explains that an Agent can take over the body of anyone still connected to the Matrix. The lesson was designed by Mouse and if you pay close attention almost everyone is a twin or triplet, they cast it that way because if you're designing a lesson it's easier to duplicate all the characters instead of putting in all unique ones. That's also why the woman in the red dress is in there haha. The next two movies are basically one long movie, so if you're going to watch The Matrix: Reloaded, make sure you watch Revolutions shortly after because there are a lot of new characters to keep track of! The fourth movie is very different from the first three and in general people didn't like it.

No, the oracle didn't lie. "You've got the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something. _Your next life, maybe."_ Neo had to die before he could see the Code and become the One. Oracles are tricky that way - they always tell the truth, but in a way that can be maddeningly opaque.

@jpward5158
@jpward5158 Год назад
The matrix was essentially born out of an idea that the wachowskis got after watching the 1995 Japanese anime movie Ghost in the Shell. I definitely recommend watching it. It's iconic. You learned a lot the similarities between ghosts in the Shell and the matrix, but I don't recommend watching the American Ghost in the Shell. The one with Scarlett Johansson just the animated movie. oh yeah at the 25:57 mark when he's dodging bullets for the first time, which is literally the most iconic scene of the entire movie. That scene was filmed with 120 different slow motion cameras that were placed at different elevations. Nowadays. All you need is one camera hell u can do that on your phone. Oh One more thing, if you really want to get into the matrix you should really watch the animatrix. It's 9, 10 different short anime stories. Most of them were actually done by Japanese animators and each one of them is different. There's one that actually is two parts which is the unsung spoken prequel so to speak to the buildup of the first movie but it pretty much tells what the matrix is in a different kind of vision. One thing you got to know about the wachowski's the directors which are now transgendered women mailed to female. They were brothers now their sisters. The wachowski's love Japanese anime and a lot of it is littered thought out all there movies that They take from Japanese anime ghost and shell was not just The only anime that they took to be inspired to make the matrix. Now there's another anime movie that came out before Ghost in the Shell called Akira. That was also an inspiration. Not as much as ghosts and shell, but Akira has inspired so many movies and musicians and just art that has been inspired by that movie

Also, for the people who find the ideas "creepy," it's worth noting that "The Matrix," "Terminator," "T2," and every other movie about a robot/AI apocalypse are NOT documentaries. They're just retellings of the "Frankenstein" story dressed in modern clothes. People who base their fears of computers, the internet, robots, AI, and the future on sci-fi movies might be better served by actually learning how the technology actually works and what it's actually capable of, not watching a fictional action movie and then living in fear of progress. I mean, there was a period of time people were scared to death of having electricity in their homes, "horseless carriages," and... well, pretty much every new advancement in science and technology. And, yet, here we still are.

I think I would've enjoyed the sequels more if (1) they were edited better, bc I felt like they spent WAY too long in each separate part of the universe (Zion and the matrix) before returning to the other (especially Zion, the "tribal rave" aspect of which I found cheesy and dated even back then when it was supposedly current), and (2) if they hadn't almost immediately nerfed Neo by ramping up the agents' abilities right from the rip. I remember going into the first sequel ready to see newly super Neo super-kick some agent butt for at least a little bit before having the stakes raised with stronger agents... only to be disappointed that he seemed to be struggling right out the gate and -- maybe because of the ramped-up opposition -- almost seemed to lose some of the power he'd apparently gained by the end of "the Matrix." That being said, I haven't gone back and watched the sequels since they came out, so I'm basing this opinion off of what I remember my reaction being in the theater. It's possible I went in with expectations from the first movie that just didn't match what the Wachowskis had in mind and my memories of why I was disappointed don't 100% match reality. On the other hand, a lot of people were disappointed by the sequels so, y'know, something about them definitely didn't hit as solidly.

So, just a little breakdown about what the Wachowski's were ultimately talking about with the Matrix film. It boils down to this; What is choice (what is free-will) and what is control (what is real or reality)? A lot of the conversation comes from a book both Directors loved called Simulacra and Simulation (The Body, In Theory: Histories of Cultural Materialism) by Jean Baudrillard and Sheila Faria Glaser. The reason the question is asked is because when a lot of philosophers and thinkers and even physicists approach those 2 concepts many come to a point where they realize that the 2 can't exist together which means one is actual and the other is illusion. It gets to be a heavy and heady conversation but I thought I'd just throw it out there for ya to help understand where the Directors were coming from.

These are 9 shorts stories on the matrix universe who helps to understand it and to elarge the universe and the lore. Actually there are only 4 of the 9 that really matters to better understand the matrix sequels : -The second Renaissance : It's a matrix prequel which tells what happened between humans and machines and why the matrix was created -A kid's story : Origin story of a new character in matrix 2 & 3 -Last flight of the Osiris : It's an introduction to matrix reloaded, litterally a couple of hours before.

Most people assume the whole "true love's kiss" concept, but in actuality, it's more likely that external touch (kiss) shocked the body back to its normal status, in essence, resetting Neo, which would have awakened him from his digital death, allowing his true form as 'the One' to be unlocked.

see ... i don't like people seeing Matrix now for the first time cause there's no way they will feel what we felt seeing it in '99. It was revolutionary in so many ways and it inspired so many movies and games and books afterwards! Back then it was the era when we got our first computers and we connected to the internet through dial-up (through the fixed-line phone) ... things people today wouldn't understand. The special effects were ground-breaking ...never or hardly used before .. like the bullet-time slow-mo or the rotating camera while you stop the time. It was the era of the first cell phones. Neo was pirating things on the internet and sold them on CD ... just like we used to do as kids back then. The subway theme, the crowded city with skyscrapers theme, the leather suits and glasses, the green numbers screens oh and the music! The machine + AI idea was not new ... you've seen it before for example in The Terminator but they surely gave it a new life back then. And over all that they gave it a perfect story ... with influences from religion (Neo - the savior) and science and technology. For me - because i saw it back then - it remains one of if not the best movie ever, but if you see it now there's no way you would see it the same and it's a shame. Everything in this movie was so good that it was overused afterwards, so now when you see it it sadly seems cheesy :|

The One is an individual who can violate Matrix green world rules. Some humans can bend spoons, others are very strong but The One is the ultimate hacker with such bending of rules such as flying.

🌟✨...the Oracle never told Neo he wasn't the One. She told him, "You already know what I'm going to say." Neo then said, "I'm not the One." The Oracle replied, "You've got the gift, I don't know what you're waiting for, another life perhaps." To which we all know Neo died and came back realizing he is in fact The One.✨🌟

The scripting around Trinity being in love with Neo was a bit cheesy but they had to draw it out to get to the point the 11th hour so to say that Trini reveals her truth- which I've always felt that there was some code involved with the kiss that aided in reviving Neo like it was preordained, predestined.
@johnplaysgames3120
@johnplaysgames3120 Год назад
There couldn't be code involved because she kisses him in the real world (unless it was something the Oracle planted by getting Neo to agree to "accept cookies" and whatever that code was got triggered by the kiss) but my understanding of that moment is that it ties into Neo's continuing blossoming realization that "there is no spoon." As Morpheus explains earlier, the reason you die IRL when you die in the matrix is because your brain believes you die (and takes your body with it). In the moments after Neo's heart stops, his brain is still alive briefly and, in that brief window, Trinity reveals what the Oracle told her and this reminds Neo of who he is, what the Matrix is, etc. allowing him to realize that "there are no bullets" and "there is no death here." In so doing, he's able to realize that his actual IRL body is fine and uninjured and therefore not actually die from what is essentially a mind-trick perpetrated by the computer. That being said, I've still always found the "true love's kiss" moment to be a little cheesy. And it doesn't help that it's not clearly explained in any way, making it feel a little too magical.
@benjaminroe311ify
@benjaminroe311ify Год назад
@@johnplaysgames3120 This is a good take on it and actually what it probably HAS to be to make sense. Quite simply if his mind doesn't full recognize he's dead... he won't be dead. So that's what must have happened. The kiss just helped with that fact.

I saw this movie in theaters in 1999, and i was blown away. You may want to check out The Animatrix as well, it's a series of animated shorts that expand the world a bit. Not essential viewing, but worth your time. I was a little disappointed by Reloaded and Revolution, but I feel both of those movies have actually aged rather well. So reevaluating them years later, I enjoyed them a lot more. There is no fourth movie. Avoid at all costs the garbage they tried to pass off as movie 4.

The Matrix trilogy are a whole story, but each kind of different. First one is the mind blowing concept. Second one has incredible action scenes. Third is like final conflict. I like the first two. There is a fourth one that was much later that is easily skippable.

The Oracle didn’t tell Neo directly he’s the One or not. She was guiding him. She helped him with the self-realization. If she just told him he’s the One, that’s not enough. He would just know it instead of becoming the One. There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Guys, the Cyberpunk genre took off in the eighties. It’s all in there already: a global VR network, neural interfaces, AIs becoming autonomous. The Cyberpunks at the time did an awesome job of predicting technological (and social) developments from things that only existed as very rudimentary lab proof-of-concepts. (Obviously they also made some wrong predictions.) You may want to compare Johnny Mnemonic also with Keanu Reeves, as a pure-bred Cyberpunk movie based on a story by William Gibson, though the Matrix definitely is the better movie. It was and probably still is the best depiction of Cyberpunk themes in film, without really being Cyberpunk in the narrower sense of the word.

It's always great to see people dive into the crazy world of The Matrix franchise. But I would like to point out that the editing on this reaction wasn't enjoyable. Cuts during interesting scenes, scenes kipped, or moments when a character is mid sentence was counter productive for enjoying the reaction. I get that the cuts are required but the placement could be better.

Yet another take on the 'computers take over the world' scenario. Obviously this story was dependent on the technology of the time while earlier versions of 'Computer=Bad' reflect the same. Because people were in 'VR' the movie took liberties earlier movies could not. It's a compelling thought that has created a lot of talk but has all the scientific fact of Avatar. As a veteran of the theatrical release of TRON, I was not surprised by the story and really enjoyed the advances film has made. Casting was tight. Another movie with 'similar' undertones is 'Surrogates'.

The first thing i thought of when watching this reaction. Weird... I'm not in any way religious. Was born and brought up in a catholic family. But iv always felt institutionalized religion or organized religion was manipulation. I always believed in Jesus, just not everything surrounding his story. I've been saying this for over the past year. That we(humans) as a society need to start confronting our own demons. So by the time it comes to confronting these societal demons we have created through our own ignorance, we will be more willing and able to believe and defeat them. It's no coincidence that the world we live in is going to hell in a hand basket. Child trafficking and in general human trafficking are real and are being covered up by(USA) our justice system. There's a great interview on the Shawn Ryan Podcast revealing a lot of details concerning Jeffery Epstein's little black book. It will blow your mind. How deep and dark world governments are. The military industrial complex has infiltrated every government throughout the world. It's directly linked into corporate finance also. Sure you'll hear about Epstein's sex crimes on national news. But you don't hear one damn peep about his financial crimes and who was directly involved with him. Please keep an open mind. And one other suggestion, check out unlimitedhangout.com. Great articles dealing with this exact issue dating from 1940s to the present. The amount of work done by these journalists to uncover these things should be celebrated. If any group be it government or any other organization, attempts to censor language for any reason. They're aiming at controlling not only the spoken and written part of your language but also your thoughts. How do most of us, if not all of us, think? Through language. So if anyone tries to limit speech, be it for any reason. They're trying to control public thought and public discourse. If you don't have free speech, then nothing else you is free either. Maybe hatred, that always seems to be available at a moments notice. But i digress. I concur with you. Peace!

the idea of AI taking over goes back decades before the 90s. I've read stuff from the 60s with that Saw it at the end of my freshman year in college. a girl i liked but did not know had broken up with her boyfriend asked me out. I did not consider it a date (I also saw star wars ep 1 that way). she must have been so annoyed. Ladies, you can mention you're, i don't know, kind of sad because you broke up last month when you're trying to date a clueless idiot. That might not have been enough in my case of thickheadedness, but probably works in most cases

You have to realize that everything Matrix related is AI and computers. So all of the "bad guys" are computer software designed to protect the architecture of the AI. Agents are basically anti-virus software designed to find programs behaving outside of their designated programming and delete them. Keep "computers" in mind when you watch the rest of the movies.
