Hi, nice reaction guys...just to correct you on your mindset about Penny... Charlie was his girlfriend in the original...the scene in the dinner where they sing great balls of fire... Meg Ryan brings up the story about Mav's old flame Penny, an Admiral's daughter...that's the connection

All people said when walking out of the theater was, "That's best movie I've seen in the theater in years!" People were loudly cheering and so many people were crying. I don't think anyone expected it to be that kind of masterpiece.

I recently watched a video with a real top gun instructor talking about this movie (Top Gun Maverick). He clearly stated that the instructors at top gun are way above the"top" pilots in flight tactics skill-wise, but with the caviat that their (instructors) skill comes from practicing everyday against the best of the best pilots. They have seen and know the correct response to every move the "trainees" try to pull on them.

Did you catch the sneaky move Glen Powell pulled with the jukebox he hits # 86 while choosing a song. The year the first TOPGUN movie came out. That was not in the script and no one in production actually caught it till post production. Got a good laugh out from both cast and crew when it was discovered.

This was a film none of us knew we desperately needed. It was the best legacy film to be made. I was a teen in HS when I saw this blockbuster in the theater in 86. I have seem TGM 13 times in the theater in multiple formats (IMAX, Dolby Cinema, Digital). Assuming that it'll be back in theaters for one more run after the Academy announces it's nominations, I hope you get a chance and see this film in theaters, in the largest format possible. This film was meant to be experienced in them. Good reaction.

It was a throw back film. It didn't rely as heavily on CGI. The characters seemed real. You could walk into that bar and meet people who behaved and were just like them. The main character's journey was great. More importantly, it did nostalgia PERFECTLY. Just enough that it didn't annoy you but put a smile on your face.
@theshadowfax239
@theshadowfax239 Год назад
I mean, don't kid yourself, there was still a ton of CGI. Anytime you saw two or more planes in the sky at the same time that was CGI. Also any obstacles or terrain around the planes were CGI'd as well. Single plane shots were real, and cockpit video of the actors were real, although the scenery around them will CGI if it involved another plane or terrain.

@@theshadowfax239 Going to give you a thumbs up Lord of Horses because you're not wrong, but Butts kissed mine weren't either. Wait I mean, .... *takes a deep breath* The *looks up* (seriously?) "original poster" was right. It was a very well crafted movie that loaded as much practical in as possible. Hell they even stole two Felon's from the Russian's, like two of seven is it, nine? Anyway they stole two for the movie. Made it seem like three with the ending sequence. Let alone the Iranian F14 we borrowed. *smiles and shakes her head* Sincerely though, it was a great movie. As much as I hate it, the pandemic probably helped them iron out the rougher edges. It's easy to see and feel the different tone of the original... but the fact that older folk who SAW the original when it came out still enjoyed this greatly, compared to like... all the other money grab sequels of the last sixty years? They did a good job. Love your name. Ride on. *bows*
@albertaguy4817
@albertaguy4817 Год назад
My last comment... the actors were not allowed to pilot the real F18's, hence the decision to select a two seat aircraft. The visuals are real however. Tom was in fact being thrown around by the actual real life fighter pilot flying the course. Same helmet paint, different seats is all. All the actors in this movie went through the same G's as the trained pilots flying the scenes.

None of the actors actually flew the FA-18s, because there is no way the Navy would ever allow that. There are some clues that the actors are sitting in the back seats. For example, during the first ACM exercise, Tom Cruise places his right hand on the canopy glass. The Superhornet stick is flown with the right hand. Also, whenever you see upward facing shots from their feet you see the grab handles that are for a WSO (back seater). At the end, though, Tom Cruise is actually flying that P-51 Mustang. He owns it.

Such an amazing reaction and such a great movie! The amusing thing for me that no one really gets is that Hangman is Maverick as he would have been in this era of single seat warplanes. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, in some ways his conscience, riding brakes on Mav's worse impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove you weren't as good as he was. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too. In an early script, Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that. In the F-18 scenes, professional military pilots were doing the actual flying, but the back seat cockpits were set up to look like the real thing. The tech advances for getting us inside the cockpit with the actor were amazing! And the actors had additional duties to their usual acting as they had to test and make sure the cameras were set and focused properly, that their makeup was good, and that the shots were as near perfect as possible. The director had the toughest time since all he could do was stand around and wait until the day's flying was done, then collect all the day's filming out of the onboard camera systems and take it to watch for the first time then and make notes for the next day's flying. 😀 The actors actually had to go through an intensive training program to adapt them for flying in the fighters. I imagine there was some vomit hosed out of the cockpit after some of those maneuvers. Even though the actors, from what I remember, were never taken above 4G, that's nothing to sneeze at. Especially over time. I know the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds near where I grew up in Charlotte, NC is said to max out at around 4Gs, that's just for a short period of time. 😀 The WWII plane Cruise was working on at the beginning and flying at the end of the movie is his own personal plane that he is licensed to fly. He took members of the cast and crew up in it for fun in between work. That had to be a blast. 😀 Val Kilmer, of course, had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and he wanted to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie. Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know 😛) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe his picture can hang on the wall with all the other test pilots who died in the cockpit. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. And, whether this was Ice's grand plan knowing who all from Pete's history was there or not, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit. In a Hollyweird full of shallow movies and shows with shallow scripts and no actual thought behind them and shallow characters who only change in shallow ways, a movie of this great depth made me so happy to see. I can watch it again and again and love it still. So very well done. For all the concerns I've had for Tom Cruise's weirdnesses in the past, he is absolutely a glorious hero for making this movie happen.

@@tktopmovies It was a blast watching it (again) with you all. Great channel and reaction! And, yeah, me being me I enjoyed that they put so much effort into the psychology of the characters. That depth is important in creating classics and they did it so well with this. When even a secondary character like Hangman gets an arc, and we can see Mav's growth from his youth. Then he was all about thinking of his own fun and his own glory and now he's all about taking on trouble for his people: from launching in spite of orders to save the jobs of the others on the project at the beginning of the film, to his self-sacrifice at the end to willingly risk everything save the boy when he couldn't save the dad, he has grown so much. Great stuff! I also loved that Bob (Lewis Pullman) was a backseater in an F-18 when his real life dad (Bill Pullman) played a former F-18 pilot turned president in the movie Independence Day. Priceless stuff!

All the actors and actresses were flying backseat of an F/A-18 F during the flight scenes with an actual USN aviator up front. While Tom Cruise is a civilian pilot in order to fly an aircraft like the Super Hornet a person first has to be commissioned and then go through the navy flight school which takes years to get through.

The song "You're Right Where You Belong/Give Em Hell" is a masterpiece. The music is somber, and you can feel the steady uneasy nervousness rise in your throat as it contiunes and we see every member of the team for what could be the last time. But as the song changes from "You're right where you belong" to "Give em Hell" it simulates the adrenaline kicking in. The change from fear of doing to fear of failing and you realize something. There isn't any time to contemplate the fact you might not make it home. You think too much up there, and you're dead.

Not to be “that guy” but… Tom Cruise does own a Mustang however it’s not a P51D which is the fighter variant. It’s actually a P51K/F-6K Mustang. Same basic airframe but different purpose. The F-6K was a photographic reconnaissance plane and Tom’s was built in 1944. It was flown by the Civil Air Patrol until it was retired and went to private ownership. Tom purchased it in 2001 after it had gone through several restorations to more closely resemble the P51D.

Cruise was in a 2 seat F-18 during the flying. They made it look like he was flying his character's single seat version thru movie magic, but yes, he actually was along for the ride acting like he was doing the flying. He took the G-loads. Northrup assured the Navy the original F-18 was good to 9 G's for the projected life of the airframe. The Navy maintained the 7.5 G limit for their own reasons, but even at 7.5 the F-18 could outmaneuver pretty much anything else flying, so they saw no need to push it. Navy pilots confirmed that they could push beyond 7.5 if they needed to but it was discouraged in routine operations.

Bear in mind the the deck crew on the carrier are not actors they are serving navy personnel doing what they were trained to do. They were demonstrating what they do for a living in the world's most dangerous workplace.The "don't tell me, tell it to his family" might seem harsh but it's how he demonstrates the commitment the mission will take. Bird strike means exactly what you think. They hit a bird or birds and it wrecked their engines. At that speed it only takes one goose to wreck a jet engine.

Along with the other laudatory comments, in the final scene that was TCs personal P-51 and he was flying it. JC was in the back seat. Tom is a quite accomplished pilot, with multiple certificates and ratings, including helicopters and jets. To get the actors ready to fly in the F-18 (you can't really fake the g-forces on their faces) they went through an extensive training program designed by TC. The result is spectacular, and in many ways, better than the original. And Penny Benjamin is smokin'

19:12 A bird strike happens when a plane runs into a bird; after all, both planes and birds do operate in the air. Since planes usually are traveling at hundreds of miles per hour on impact, a hitting bird can smash up canopies (and thus seriously injure or kill the pilot behind that canopy), dent the metal parts of the airplanes they hit, or even destroy engines, which aren't really designed to be hit by an object of any sort and still stay in one piece. 22:10 None of the actors flew any of the aircraft themselves. In those scenes were the actors were in planes, the actors were in the rear seat of a two-seater F-18, while a Navy pilot was flying the aircraft. Indeed, I believe the US Navy specifically stated that they would only allow filming to be done in F-18's if Tom Cruise didn't get his hands on any of the Hornets' controls. Great reaction to a great movie!

Hello! I'm new to your channel and new to reaction videos! Ok, so, I was 11 when the first Top Gun came out. lt's in my top 5 movies of all time, and have watched it 100+ times! I waited 36 years for this sequel! I saw Top Gun: Maverick in theaters 3 times, bought it on Amazon Prime the minute it came out, and got the 4K UHD and the soundtrack when they came out, too... and wouldn't you know they actually put the soundtrack on vinyl! Had to have that for my collection! I love this movie so much!! I didn't even know who Miles Teller was before this movie... he was absolutely the right choice to play Goose's son! Not to mention... HELLO!!! My God is he HOT! I know there was some trivia you guys didn't know before you watched it. I'm going to try and help with a few things... I think you thought Penny was Charlie, his love interest from the first movie. Penny Benjamin was the daughter of an admiral, who was never seen but mentioned a couple of times in the first movie. You were right about it being the same house, though. They used Charlie's house as Penny's! Miles Teller actually played the piano and sang in the movie... and it's even on the soundtrack, too! He also plays saxophone and drums. He was a drummer in the movie Whiplash. He played Willard, who couldn't dance in the reboot of Footloose (2011), but Miles is actually a great dancer! He even played Willard in high school in their production of the original Footloose (1984). Rooster was my favorite, just as Goose was in the original. I loved Pheonix and Bob too, though! Bob was played by Lewis Pullman who is Bill Pullman's son. Glen Powell (Hangman) actually tried out for the role of Rooster, but when he didn't get it, he was so mad that he was going to turn down the role of Hangman! Tom convinced him he could make the part great! This movie was cast so perfectly! Val Kilmer, who played Ice Man, is actually sick with throat cancer in real life. In fact, he didn't even want to do the movie and fought Tom for a long time about it, but Tom refused to do it without him. His cancer is why they had to do the scene, with Val, the way they did. Val really can't speak much at all, so they blended his son's voice, who sounds just like Val, to help fill it in a little more. That's why he didn't have more screen time. Although Ice Man died in the movie, Val is still alive! The guy who first thanks Maverick for the beer he bought him in the bar, was one of the actual Top Gun Fighter Pilots they hired for the film. The actors really did go up in the jets. The Navy's actual pilots flew the jets, but all of the actors were with them. That's how they got all those incredible views in this movie! Tom has been a pilot for a long time. That was actually his P-52 plane he flew at the end of the movie. Tom has been preparing for this movie with decades of study in aviation and cinematography. They had to make 7 imax quality cameras for the jets, but they could not interfere with the function of the jet in any way. It took them 15 months just to do that. Also, Tom put together a 4 month flight school for the actors. They started with small aircraft and worked their way up to the F-18s, so that by the time they had to film, the cast could handle it. They had to learn to direct themselves, and how to edit because they were the only ones that could do it mid-flight. Then, the Navy had its own requirements before the actors were cleared to fly. They had to go through survival training before they could even fly in the jets, in case there was any trouble, they needed to be able to handle being blindfolded, strapped to a chair in a simulated jet, and then dropped in the water! They had to be able to get out of the plane before they drowned! l got some of this info from the bonus video that came with the 4K Blu-ray bonus videos. I highly recommend watching it! Tom always said he wouldn't do a Top Gun sequel until the story was right. He told the actors that to make this sequel to a movie, that so many people loved for so long, would be like trying to hit a bullet with a bullet! Boy, was he right... but they did it, brilliantly! This is now my favorite movie of all time!!!

Hi Kate!!! Wow!! We really enjoyed reading all of these fun facts and a ton of answers to our questions :) First of all, thank you so much for choosing to join our Patreon! That means a lot to us! Totally agree with you about the casting! They did a fantastic job with that!!! That is shocking to hear that Glen Powell almost turned down the role! Sad to hear that Val has throat cancer in real life, glad to see that he was included in the movie and that Tom fought for him to be in it!! OMG about the amount of training and preparation that went into flying and filming it!!!! That sounds like so much work! But it definitely paid off! This movie was SO action-packed and had us gripping our seats the entire time!!

Should win Oscar for best picture. The last time I was in a theater and everyone cheered and applauded at the end was Empire Strikes Back. This movie was perfect and exactly what the Oscar's need. Your editing needs work. Chopped through a lot of important dialog yet you covered the beach scene in detail. For instance you don't know why Goose is upset at Mav, you blew past it on the tarmac. Also penny and his first meet.

Top Gun: Maverick is THE best movie i've had the privilege to see in theaters. I vividly remember seeing Peter Jackson's King Kong in theaters in 2005 (when I was only 6). For 17 years that was the best movie I had seen in theaters, until Top Gun: Maverick.

a long time ago when i was serving in the U.S. Navy, i worked on F-14's and during my first shore duty assignment, i was stationed at Top Gun, it IS NOT, and never was a school for only the top 1% of Naval Aviatorsit was a school that ALL Naval aviators and RIO's attended to teach them the basic fighter aircraft manuervering, and in later weeks, advanced maneuvers and tactics, basically the school was designed to take fighter pilots and turn them into very effiecient and lethal fighter pilots, from 1968 till 2003, it was actually titled "Fighter Weapons School" after the Navy was forced to get rid of their fighter planes, the name of the school changed to "Strike Fighter Weapons School" and the silibus also changed, most of the fighting tactics have been watered down, and it primarily focuses on air to ground bombing and evading enemy fighters, contrary to belief, the F/A-18 IS NOT a fighter plane, it never was, when it was a prototype, (YF-17) it was in fact being developed as a true air dominance fighter, BUT, that was an Air Force creation, and the Air Force chose the YF-16 to build into the F-16, the YF-17, was then heavily modified, nearly all of it's fighting abilities were severly curtailed, Air to Ground systems were added to it's computer systems, more than 9,000 pounds of wieght was added to it's airframe, NO addition of thrust was added, cutting it's performance to 305 of what it was originally intended, then it was shoved down the Navy's throat despite the fact that they DID NOT want it, now top gun is a sad shadow of what it used to be. but this is a good movie, no matter how much bulls**t is in it.

Loved it but 3 issues, pilot with glasses would not be qualified to fly any us military aircraft. The girl playing Penny was 6 when one came out making mav a pediophile in TG1. 3rd is because it is Tom's plane and a 2 seat version. As a Navy pilot instead of the Mustang used only by the Army and Air Force, Maverick would have chosen a Navy plane to restore. The the Hellcat or Corsair would have been good choices however the Navy did not purchase two seat training versions during the war.

It would be nice to see Your reactions to the movies (if You haven't seen them yet) - James Cameron's Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez, Cameron's Avatar of course, Inception, Interstellar, Tenet - these three from Nolan.

@@tktopmovies I saw the new Avatar four times in the cinema. All in IMAX 3D. If You liked the first Avatar, You should like the second part as well. It is a visual masterpiece. Especially watching it in IMAX. I do not hide that there is a problem how to reconcile the first impressions watching the reaction in Your own home and the experiences from the cinema. It's a bit like watching a parachute jump and jumping yourself. Anyway, if You plan to watch Avatar 2 in the near future as part of the YT reaction, I'd love to watch it. From other movies I recommend - The Martian with Matt Damon, Bullet Train with Brad Pitt, Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds. However, the most important thing for me is to see the reaction to Alita, my most favorite movie
