Bryan has a new long-term test car, its our 2022 Car of the Year, the Renault Megane E-Tech. Over the next three months he will be using it as his everyday car, enabling him to get properly under the skin of it and find out what it's really like. So far it has been properly busy with three long trips under its belt in the first few weeks he has had it, including this episode which he filmed in Scotland with it. How has life with La Regié been so far? Time to find out.......

As a Megane E-Tech (Techno) owner since April I can concur almost 100% with Bryan’s review. Mine has been 100% reliable and I have had no tech gremlins. The alarm has only gone off once- unfortunately for my neighbours about midnight - but I now double click the lock button which I am told switches off the internal sensors that can be set off my a fly. I have no regrets about buying the car but I still do feel a little shortchanged. I think it was very unfortunate that the spec, of all models was cut back for the UK market, because Renault needed the car to hit certain price points. This is all the more galling since the recent price realignment (cut). Top of my irritations are the smaller central SatNav/Informative screen especially as the larger screen in the same dashboard appears in the rhd Austral and will be coming in the Scenic. Besides the loss of the heat pump the UK cars lost out on ambient lighting across the lower dashboard and the Google Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control which will slow the car down before the camera reads road signs and before the car approaches roundabout. Minor irritations are the poor quality naff key fob and in the absence of a bigger boot button no remote release. I would also like to see a false boot floor with two height options so as to avoid having to lift items over such a high lip and be able to accommodate flat loads with the rear seats folded. The range has been a little disappointing as it has fallen off more in the colder weather than my previous EVs. I am not entirely convinced as to whether a heat pump would make much difference and justify the additional cost. It obviously helps range when you are running all the auxiliaries from the 12v battery but I guess the biggest loss of range is just down to the main battery chemistry not being so effective in cold weather. What I do like about the car is the comfort, refinement, the Android Automotive/Google tech with the fast responsive screen, the ACC, speed limiter and ability to set the ACC speed to current limit. The overall quality is pretty acceptable although not up to VW standards of the past and some of the Korean efforts. The looks are jaw dropping and whilst this has never been the highest consideration when I have come to choose a car it does bring pleasure when you think other drivers look at you with some envy. The puddle lights also make me smile. I am a little perplexed why I do not see more Megane‘s on the road. Perhaps Renault should have rebadged their C class hatchback - although I understand that Megane was a much loved name on the continent - perhaps like we took to the Clio. A colleague has just taken delivery of a Cupra Born it will be interesting to compare notes. He has though already said he doesn’t like the absence of back lit controls. I took a Born on a test drive before deciding on the Megane but didn’t connect with it as well. It was a bit too similar to the two i3’s that I had run for 8 years - I wanted a bit of a change - and the tech was not nearly as good as in the Renault. There was however the option of a panoramic roof which I have had I all my previous cars over the past 25 years. It is real pity that the Megane was not engineered to accommodate the panoramic roof that is available in the new Scenic. With the dark grey headlining the Megane is a bit gloomy inside. Here endith my response to Bryan’s invitation to Megane owners as to our ownership experience.

I discovered that if you spec a car on the French site, the 22kw is a massive cost upgrade, I'm not sure why they went this route but it does explain why other features have been omitted. The Intelligent / context aware ACC is to me one of the biggest let downs, blamed on the fact that the UK maps haven't been updated, but the fact they have said existing cars will not be updated is a real kick in the teeth. I have yet to find out if this feature is available on the newer cars like the Austral.

My partner is due to take delivery of this car on the motability scheme in February. The decision on the e-tech was made after watching your first video. Coming from an Audi S5, it'll be very different but we're very much looking forward to trying something different. Keep up the great work and keep those reviews coming 🙂

Thank You for video. As A winter car, Megane works great. Living in Finland, we had many days over -30 C. No big problems, of course the battery levels runs quite fast to low and side windows were frozen occasionally. But, as I heard, some electric car owners (Audi,and so)had quite big problems in these artic weather conditions.

Had my Launch Edition for just over a year. In summer I was able to achieve 280 mile range, albeit with mostly cross-country 50mph driving and little 70mph motorway. Deep mid winter did slash that right down to 180. Fortunately in winter my journeys never last more than a couple of hours, so well within even that range. If I'm going on longer journeys [holiday or visiting distant relatives] it's always when the weather improves so overall I'm very satisfied with the range. My distant relative lives in a known 'charger desert' so I just made sure I topped up on my way there so I didn't have to hunt around once there. Then I discovered her neighbour had a charger. We got talking EVs and he insisted I had a free top up there as well!

WLTP for the techno+ model is 263 miles, NOT 280 miles. We've had our Launch Edition for a year now, and have averaged 3.8 mi/kWh over that year. So an average range of 230 miles. In the summer we did a long journey from north of Inverness down to Penrith and back with just one stop each way, and averaged 4.4 mi/kWh on A-roads and motorway (M6). Never had the alarm problem, but I understand there’s a dealer fix that involves rerouting wiring in the headlining away from the interior lights.

I Picked up my Megane Techno + on Motability 6 weeks ago and more than happy with it, An absolute joy to drive, yeah the range is a tad disappointing but I kind of expected it during the Winter weather, No alarm issues so far, I love the fact it has a 22kwh charger on board as I know a car park nearby that has free 22kwh charging and just pay to park, which is handy until I get my home charger installed, all in all a very impressive car.

Do you use it on hand controls? Reason I ask is that I am a wheelchair user and have push/pull controls on the right side of the steering wheel but I’m concerned that this might just be a bit too cluttered to do that on this Megane. Adding accelerator/brake to all those other stalks seems like it might be a bit too much for one right hand to use….

I am swapping out from my Kia e-Niro to a Megane Techno + so always good to read reviews. The Kia has been a great car and as said in the video the range and efficiency is really really good. However having tried a lot of cars I concluded that the Megane was the best looking car, the quietest and most comfortable to drive. I was worried about the boot as we often carry electric folding bikes but I took them along to my dealer and found they both fitted (in fact worked better than it did in the e-Niro). I was concerned bit about the range but frankly given most of my driving is actually sub 100 miles and i charge mainly at home it was not an issue. I actually calculated that the reduced range would be compensated by the faster charging compared with the e-Niro (only once saw 70kwh) so when doing a longer journey would just go to a good rapid charger. I have read about the alarm issue many times and gather that this is being fixed for new cars (get mine in March). Finally I will not miss all the stupid bings and bongs the e-Niro makes (the one thing that Kia really need to fix and didn't in the new version).
@EnmandsBand1
@EnmandsBand1 5 месяцев назад
how do you deal with that small letterbox of a rear window after driving the E-Niro? I am currently looking at the Megane E-Tech and the new Niro EV and I am mostly in favour of the Kia so far as it seems more practical and with better visibilty out of the windows
@EdwardWood-vu8jt
@EdwardWood-vu8jt 5 месяцев назад
I got used to the narrow rear window after a few days. Removing the centre rear headrest improves visibility enormously. The main issue I still have is that if another car is very close behind you at night you can't see their lights

I've had a Techno+ since September. There's definitely been a drop in efficiency since the weather turned colder but I don't do many long journeys so it's not an issue. Did one longer trip of ~350 miles in the first month and range was looking like 220-230 miles. Doing it again after Christmas so the difference will be interesting. I've had no issues with the alarm.

I’ve had the Megane Equilibre 60kwh since May 2023 and I adore it. It’s fantastic to drive, really comfortable, very reliable, gorgeous looking, and very well screwed together. Two things that took time to get used to, but now feel second nature: 1) gear lever position and 2) brake sensitivity. Renault understate its speed too, car reviewers have clocked its 0-60 at 6.8 seconds. The CarPlay sometimes has issues connecting (especially when two phones are connected and one person gets out of the car). Majority of the time it connects with no issues however. Things I most like: 1) exterior styling (stunning in red, it turns heads); 2) comfort & driving dynamics; 3) 22kwh A/C charging (I’ve access to 22kwh chargers at work and in my apartment block); 4) ease of use (physical buttons!!!). Things I’m not so fond of: 1) although boot is big, it’s very deep and not very long. So, with a big grocery shop, it fills up quickly (unless you’re ok piling your groceries or dropping the rear seats); 2) although I rarely carry rear passengers, it’s quite cramped back there. Not much else! It’s a fantastic car and deserves to sell more than, eg, the ID 3. Note: the trim levels in Ireland are a bit different than UK. Only 3 (equilibre, techno, launch - each available in 40 or 60kwh). From what I’ve seen, our equilibre comes better equipped than in the UK, due to only having 2 permanent spec levels (launch only available at, ahm, launch).

Bought my car one year ago and really like it. Tested a couple of bigger cars (Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5) before going with the Renault. During the summer months I managed to get 480km from a full charge. I drove in Eco mode, turned the air conditioning off and used full regeneration. However, during November and December, I am getting 310/330km from it.

Had mine since September last year, 2 day old car we took from Newcastle to Wetherby and back on one charge 100% returning with 24%, same trip same speed and conditions I had to stop to charge as claimed it would be uncable to make journey. First trip 230 mile range to 100% and have struggled to get anywhere past 170/180 to a full charge since. That being said it's never been above 10c for months and I don't do that journey often, overall happy with the car, but on the few times i've used a rapid charger it's not went above 70/80 kwh! Great video by the way!

Interesting to hear about the alarm issue with the car. I have a 1 year old Renault Arkana which is the full hybrid. Love the car but I’ve also had alarm issues. I ah e found that if I disable the “walk away” feature and press the button on the drivers door or the button on the key card to lock it then I don’t get the random alarm activations. I mentioned the issue to my Renault dealer and they couldn’t find an issue. I too love the adaptive cruise control. I use it all the time. It’s particularly good in crawling traffic on my commute into the centre of Sheffield of a morning. Set it at 30 and I rarely touch the accelerator or the brake for the last 4 miles into town. Awesome system.

Bought an Iconic early December with 1500 miles on the clock. Did a 200 mile round trip to see family after a week and tried to charge at Banbury on the way back. Wouldn't charge! Made it back home with 7% left. Also the paddles don't work and no icon on the screen. In tomorrow to hopefully get sorted. Lovely car to drive, sport mode handy when required. Heats interior really quickly, a boost in this weather. No alarm issues. Overall, pleased as long as the faults can be rectified.

Do like long-term tests - means you really get to know the car - will be interested to see how you get on over the next few months 😁. Would like to see the actual consumption figures you are getting ? Had my Cupra Born for just over a year - it's averaged 3.8 miles/kwh. In summer, it was 4.2-4.5. Recently, this has gone down to 3.2-3.5, quite a bit of a hit (don't have a heatpump) ☹️. The Renault wasn't available when I ordered my EV, it would have been a contender.

Great video and having had a launch edition since Jan 23 I agree with all of your early observations: I love the ride and handling (drives like a proper "warm hatch"), the build quality, looks, composure on the motorway and the switchgear. The launch edition added the camera option for the rear mirror and Harmon Kardon speakers. The latter i love but the camera for the mirror is a bit of a gimic - so Techno is i think the sensible buy. With regards to range, having previously had an original ioniq I've been disappointed with the miles per kwh figure, and this is exaccerbated by the fact i originally put a confirmed order in before the full UK spec was announced - so had initial disappointement over the smaller screen and lack of heat pump. That said - you say your car has a heat pump and i'm seeing similar range to you in winter; around 160-170 miles in mixed driving when the temps are around zero, but up to the heady hights of 230-240 miles in summer. I've had little reason to rapid charge doing most of my top ups at home - but have seen 120kw for a brief spell when i had reason to do so. In the last week i've just had the alarm retro fitted by the dealer at first service, as the parts weren't available when the car was delivered. I've just experienced the random false alarms you mention (and are commented on in the forums) so the car's back in tomorrow to (hopefully!) get it sorted.

Great review as always. After having the Techno+ for 2 months now, range is definitely an issue for me as well. 80% charge only gives a range of 165 miles so my max range is only 206 miles. It is comfortable and full of driving assistance gadgets which regularly get used to great advantage

That range would just about suit me. However, I personally see little point in hoping a summer range will be greater. When I don’t drive less far, just because avg. temps are sub 00°C. For me, a vehicle needs to have a reliable given range in the depths of winter. If the summer range increases, well that’s a plus. But for me, I need to get from A-B-C-A in one go, with a passenger who’s health may be endangered, if I had to hang around for another 40mins. to 1hr+. en route.

I’ve had my Megane Etech EV60:Icon for about 5 weeks now. It’s a fantastic car. The range really does depend on the weather temperature. Below about 2 Celsius my range is around 180 for a 100% charge. From 5 Celsius it goes up to 200 miles. 10 Celsius it’s about 220 miles. I can see in spring when it warms up I think the range will be atleast 250 miles I would hope.

Hi, A good review of the car, I've had mine 3 weeks via Renault subscription, the alarm is an issue, I think it's a volumetric sensor issue as when the car is on the driveway it goes off but not on the road or work car park? The miles per k/wk is difficult to work out at present but I went from Telford to Liverpool and back last weekend 175-mile trip at 8°, I managed 3.9 miles per k/WH with a mixture of urban and motorway driving so had 40 miles showing left once home. Looking forward to part 2😊

I use the voice commands to change mode, turn on heated seats, heated steering wheel, turn radio on and off, even get battery% read-out so I don't have to take eyes off the road. I'm regularly finding new things that can be done via voice command. I'd really like a definitive list of all the things that can be done but bizarrely nobody at Renault seems to know!

Yes, have had problems with the alarm going off frequently on the Launch Edition. Took it back in and the problem seemed to go away for a few months but has been occurring again recently. Also feel the range is nowhere near the advertised range, even in summer. Android Auto on my Nokia used to work fine wirelessly until the last few months. Now it's decided it has to be connected with a USB cable to work - a bit of a problem since the cable socket is dodgy on the phone so will disconnect at the slightest jiggle! Very comfortable and nice to drive. Overall, despite the above, very happy with the car given our use. Love the boot capacity, though given that it is quite deep it would have been good to have a shelf like we had on the Captur. That meant you could stuff the lighter stuff in the bottom and put heavier stuff on the shelf, level with the boot lid. Also gave a level surface if you put the rear seats down to put a long item through the boot. Reviewer seems very relaxed about using very fast chargers on long journeys. I guess I would worry about how long you might have to wait for them to become free if they were in use and, maybe, others queueing to use them. Maybe that's not likely to be much of a problem. I guess people using them are likely to be wanting to get on their way as soon as possible anyway.

My Launch Edition I have had since 22nd Dec 2022 so no heat pump here 😞. My first 100% charge gave me just 190 miles in 6-7 deg C ambient - not great. I regularly do 207 miles each way every 2-3 weeks (so 16k miles in 1st year !) Range is important to me so have had to adapt driving style in winter months to shortest distance rather than fastest route in summer. Loves - styling, technology, comfort, quietness, instant acceleration on overtakes, Harmon Kardon sound system is fab. Hates - Boot aperture too small which means window and wiper too small, loading level too high for heavy object loading, etc. Adaptive cruise gets spooked by bridge shadows in bright sun and slams on brakes ! It can be dark in the back seats due to high waistline, drug dealer spec rear windows, dark roof lining and no sunroof ! Drop in car's value since new is very alarming. Since I bought my LE car, recent Meganes now have better spec (heat pump added) and price reduced, so a bit miffed us early adopters have been punished for ordering early 😬 Issues - mine has no alarm fitted so no probs there, but serious intermittent charging bug when home charging with Zappi charger (took Renault 10 months to admit this and release a vehicle software update to correct it - now fine), clonk from rear suspension over speed bumps (a fix from Renault now available) Charging tip - if there is a Tesla supercharger on your route that supports non-Tesla vehicles, then use it - they are always available, very fast charging and cheaper than than any other 3rd party super rapid public chargers, why wouldn't you ? Summary - still loving driving the Megane and cheaper than the BMW i4 I was considering at the time

Yes range is an issue. Heat pump seems to be not that efficient.Also winter tyres take a hit too to the range. I take a hit of around 150-180km in the winter down from around 380-400kw in the summer with air-con on. Driving my father's Kona, that only takes a hit of about 80km in the winter, from 480-500km to around 400-420 km. And that has only a slitly bigger battery 64kw.

I have good range overall but ofcourse dropped now in winter. But much better than you got in the test. About charging it is not perfect. You get most out of it if you try to drive it down to about 10%. Then you get 120-130 kw for a short time then it goes down. Im still ok with it. Love almoste everything. What I dont like is the silly boot button and the standard soundsystem in the techno.

Pretty fair assessment and a lot that I agree with. Mine is the Techno , not the Techno +. A gripe - all the European ones came with heat pumps, mine didn’t and then later on the dropped the techno and we now have the Techno +. I am not sure what real difference it makes. I have now done over 7000 miles since I got the car in April. I have done some long journeys from Wiltshire to Scotland and Norfolk and down to Cornwall. I drive at times to suit me and I am not in a hurry so I have been getting up to 4.2 miles per kWh and 3.8 miles per kWh. I drive mostly in Eco or Comfort mode. The adaptive cruise control is great and is the speed limiter and the lane assist works very well. I charge mostly from home on a smart charger rated at 7.5 kw on the Octopus Go tariff which makes it super cheap to keep it topped up. On the long journeys it really pays to plan ahead and I use both the built in Google maps and Zap Map. I have never managed to see more than about 80kw hour charge rate even on fast chargers. I suspect this is mostly down to the charger. I have had no alarm problems. Nothing else has gone wrong so far. I do very much like this car. I test drove an MG4 and my wife hated it and thought the interior was cheap. I also looked at the ID3 and the Cupra Born but felt the Renault was the most stylish and well appointed inside. You mentioned hesitant Apple CarPlay. The trick is to sit in the drivers seat and unlock the phone before you start the car and then put it on the charging pad. This seems to work for me now. Range is worse in colder weather down about 45 miles on the summer but I don’t really go much beyond 100 miles at this time of year so I am quite relaxed about that. Finally, I haven’t seen many of these about and I can’t think why. It is a great car.

I love the way the Megane looks and the interior is beautiful, great quality. What put me off was how tight it was in the back, there isn’t much knee room and my feet didn’t fit under the seat in front of me. The boot is also very narrow between the wheel wells, so whilst there is lots of volume, I’m not sure how practical it it. I don’t understand why Renault made the Megane so narrow when the Ariya is on the same platform and is wider

During the summer the megane delivers wltp... in one particular trip I achieved even 500 km on a single charge( national roads, no freeways), but during the winter, the range drops to 280-300 km, about charging speed's in order to achieve 127 kw you need to precondition the battery from the navigation system, but to be fain the charging curve is bad, it drops really fast to 90 kwh

Had the Equilibre for a year and 12,000 miles, to replace a Zoe & old diesel for dinghy towing. I don't have any motorways or even dual carrarigeways nearer than 50 miles away so most of my driving at 50ish or less and I expect 4 mpKwh, about half that towing. Put in a false boot floor and took out the middle head-rest. I'm old enough to remember when cars went no faster than 60mph so I'm happy to avoid fast roads and take more scenic routes. Usually just me or one other in the car so back seat is not an issue but plenty of space for camping and dinghy gear. Suits my life very well.

I like the way the car handles, I have the Mégane E-Tech Iconic spec. I picked the vehicle up on the 12th of August (also in the Ceramic Grey, with black roof).I did fancy the red, however this is not an option on the Iconic. Initially all was well, getting decent range. This however has taken a dramatic down turn after the brief two weeks of summer enjoyed in Edinburgh dipping from 260 now down to 140 on my most recent charge ( from the home charger) I was expecting a drop having had a Toyota Prius PHEV. But to drop to 140, I am wondering if I made the right choice. The car is on Motability and thinking of asking if I can have an early termination, as my wife has an Arkana Engineered and it gets the quoted range.

I have the Iconic in Black/Grey roof, had since 3rd Dec 23 and I have been driving it mostly local but 2 trips to my Brother who lives 102 miles away both times starting with close to 100% charge and got there and back without a charge both times and I usually use Eco mode with some Comfort mode and find I get 220 miles on a full charge not dropping below 19%. I absolutely love this car and if driven sensibly you get good range. I was disappointed at 1st because most of the reviews show the French version so was expecting Electric Massage seats and 12" display but I still fell in love with it. I did not like the Gold Blade at the front so have had that carbon fibred in Black and it look so much better. I have the Harman Kardon 9 Speaker sound system which sound the dogs and has lots of adjustability to tune to your personal preference. I also like the paddles and when used correctly will save a lot of energy. I wish it had a panoramic roof but get why the omitted putting one in as it keeps the weight down and that's a good thing. Did I pick the best car in its class damn right I did, I test drove 5 other cars and none where this refined and performance.

I have the Megane E-Tech Iconic and love it a lot. Yes I never see the fast charging speeds anywhere near 130 and only see peaks close to 90 but still mange to charge fast enough to 80% in 30 min so no issues and happy with it. Would be able to see charge speed on the myRenault app. Not much negative things to report besides you can’t play media music files while using Android Auto and seats moving against passenger feet while front seat peeps get out, lane assist does not hold the car in the lane so you will tik tak toe out your lane if you would need it if driver gets in trouble and really needs it so that is useless but adaptive cruise control is world class. Good if not the best. Strange that is so good vs terrible lane assist. Seats , build quality and premium feels is also world class and love it so much. Seat massage is over the top but I’m used to it so completion try to match it please. Best EV that I have ever driven while I had VW E-Golf 2019 and driven many others like Tesla and BYD Seal and Hybrid Volvo XC90 T8 Full option, Kia XCeed …

Alarm is a common issue - I turned off autolock and brought a Faraday box to store the car key in. Charging I got 130kw you have to be between 5% and 15% and the car has to have been driven for about 30-45 minutes. This means the battery is warm. Doing this the charging speed was consistent when using Shell or Fastned chargers.

Had the car since June this year, in the Summer driving in Eco mode easily managed 250 miles plus range, at the moment I would not really say it is that cold however the range has collapsed to below 200, not what I was expecting, is this an acceptable reduction. I only use a home charger so as yet cannot comment on public charging rates Apart from the range issue the techno is a brilliant car, I probably Road tested most of the other electric cars available, the only other car I really liked was the Citroën ec4 mainly because of the ride. I was slightly concerned that the 20 inch wheels would give a bumpy ride but I need not have worried, the ride is nearly as good as the Citroën Will keep you appraised of the range issue

Hi Bryan, had my magane etech a year now and totally agree with most of your comments. I have had no real issues with the car which is my second EV having previously had a Peugeot e2008 which I change because of the bad range and smaller battery, only to find that Renault had deleted the Heatpump from the UK spec and lied about the range which is a disaster in the winter. So anyone contemplating getting a Megane etech beware the range is bad and spoils an otherwise great t car.

I expect 250 miles in summer with my same driving style.... you really cannot complain and blame renault when you are obviously ignorant to EV life.

Brilliant EV and I absolutely love my Techno, but not a versatile family car as such. Plenty of room for a family for up to four and children +5 yrs. What could Renault improve in a facelift? With the backseats down - make the room flat, thx. And how about a tiny tiny button to preheat battery manually. Would love if Renault had the courage to do a radical "Polestar 2 facelift" and change to rear wheel drive, also because the 220 BHP is way too much with a heavy foot if surface is slightly wet 😁. Not a big issue since car is easy to control but would become more grounded and perhaps risk of wheel spin would be neutralized with RWD. And the party trick since I live in an apartment and don't have a home charger...AC-charging with 22 kWh 🥰. Here in Copenhagen we see more and more public charging limits set at 3 hours, but I do 10-100% in approx 2,5 hours - and I'm off. Efficiency and DC-charging is ok but indeed not best in class. Daily I'm doing approx 30 miles, but if I was dependent on +150 miles of range per day I would look elsewhere as low temperatures during winter potentially could become an issue in relation to range - even with a heat pump. With the worst of weather (really cold and windy) I was down to 175 miles of range (20" wheels) and this summer range was at best +280 miles. It really is a summer car designed in a beauty school for the people and not in a wind tunnel by crazy americans but le Mégane is still engineered by artists in their field. Have never had an alarm go off - what are You talking about! Must be an UK issue...sorry. Why is it not more popular (here in Denmark)? For three reasons: range, (odd) size and finally price. Despite - why does it have an audience? It's a reliable comfortable beauty and let's not forget...it has Android Automotive. Would I get a Renault next time? Indeed I would - and recently down to two in our household I'm aiming for the R5 ⚡.

You mentioned the 60/40 slit rear seat. But is that just the backrests? Have Renault again chosen to go with a bench seat? Making the car a 4/5-seater with the seats up and a 2-seater with the seats down. I’ve owned a cars like that, (as was the Zoe) and they’re just awkward to own. My present car is not a rear bench and though it’s a small car, the true 60/40 split is practical. Whereas the all-seater/2-seater was always a pain in the neck. The cost cutting measure, meant either an all-seater+boot or 2-seater+bigger boot. But if I needed 3-seats+slightly larger/longer boot. I’d then have to hire a different car. So a manufacturer opting for a bench rear seat, has become a deal-breaker for me.

I’ve had my megane etech equilibre for 12 months. I bought mine as they were released in the UK and I would not reccomend this model. In the main I agree with some of the positives you have highlighted. But I have 2 primary issues. There have been reported issues with the multi media unit that Renault do not know how to fix. For mine the screen freezes all the time and needs to be rebooted. There is also an intermittent problem where the volume controls itself. It will go all the way to max and you can’t turn it off. This is dangerous when on the motorway and suddenly your radio is playing at max when you’re driving. I am also disappointed with the mile range. I drive in Eco with full regen on all the time and I do a lot of motorway driving. Foolishly I believed the manufacturer published miles when I bought it. It’s taken me a year to get to 3.6mpkwh - in the summer it was great I could drive from home in Yorkshire to Heathrow in one trip and charge overnight before I left. Winter has destroyed the mile range. So whilst my careful summer driving has helped my average the car just hates the winter weather. In hindsight for the miles I do I should have bought a Tesla but my recent valuation means I have lost too much on this to part exchange it. For someone who doesn’t drive long distances it’s a good car - it could be great if they sorted out the multi media. But for the price difference I would upgrade to the techno in hindsight.

Picked up my Megane Tech almost a year ago, traded it in for Australe in June. It is a nice car, great around town charging at home in the evening. But for longer journeys, given charging speeds below what is advertised, current EV charging infrastructure in UK, just too many poor EV charging etiquette experiences and substantial range drop in low temperatures, MY range anxiety was intolerable. I felt I was never truly driving the car but nurturing it to maximise its range. It had to go for the sake of my sanity. I would recommend all potential Megane ETech buyers to look at the Australe. Better spec, far more luxurious interior, HUD, full size infotainment, EV mode at circa 80% around town, self charging and range circa 600+ miles. But the biggest buzz for me, I enjoy driving again, I fully use all modes just not Eco, a five minute fuel top up gets me on my way again. I absolutely adore my Australe Techno Espirit Alpine at similar cost (not withstanding substantial financial hit on my 6 month old Megane). Given current battery technology, size (range), charging infrastructure and cost, you’ll be foolish not to look at the Australe. I absolutely adore it, best car I have owned (former Jaguar, Mercedes, Peugeot, BMW owner all from new).

@@alanpatterson820 Alan, don’t wish to get in a prolonged debate but you asked for owner’s experience with the Megane E Tech, which I gave and why I moved to the Australe from the ground up built Hybrid with its own unique tech. To call it normal is not entirely accurate comment. Yes it’s bigger, better tech and infotainment equipment, more luxurious, a tad slower to 60, higher top speed, (four wheel steer on top model). But it’s a part time EV, almost exclusively EV in town. On your longer journeys like the one you undertook to Scotland, only stop you would have needed is for comfort/refreshment. I know you are a full EV only channel, but I know I was not alone on driving exclusively in Eco mode for the longer trips or curtailing speed to maximise the range in my EV.

the fact is that EV's struggle in winter, no matter what the manufacturers say. They claim they solved the massive range drop by installing a heat pump (often putting it on the option list), but then in the 'real world' there's STILL a very disappointing range in winter, despite the heat pump. I bought a used Peugeot e2008 for my first EV, just LOVE the EV experience, but the small battery and winter conditions are a horrible combination. And I mostly do city driving, so imagine if I did a lot of high speed driving. As it stands now, I charge it at home on a regular socket, and that suits me just fine. Not having to go to a charging station actually saves me time (also if I compare having to go to a gas station before), and I get to use the excess power from my solar panels, so it's a win-win. It's just that winter range, SOO disappointing!!

Yup, the price dropped down latelly, I believe with Scenic coming, basically Scenic is now priced like Megane before. I am not the owner yet but it ticks a lot of boxes for me, cause I need it for my daily city drive in 90% of usecases, the rest of my distances are 60km twice a month and 160km once a month, so ok within distances I need to cover. During my testdrive which I took recently, the digital rear mirror forced my eyes always to refocus, which I never thought will be an issue and I am not sure I can used to it. In our case we are just 2 people, so no issue with back seating and hopefully time to time passengers behind could be fine. Armrest on rear seats though I consider as a miss. I would also like to have the new “bay” sunroof like they will have in Scenic. Stalks on the right site of steering wheel no problem. Quality of drive great, I was afraid of big wheels. And at the end I would really like to know, what are the options with the battery at the end of life - would Renault be able to dismantle it for me for home usage, would I be able to change the battery in the future maybe for other chemistry (lets imagine LFP will come in Renault in the future..). Thats it from my test drive experience.

Thinking of replacing my wife’s Mokka-e with the Megane. Range sounds fairly disappointing though & that’s one of the main reasons we’re looking to replace the Mokka. Its range is terrible, not much more than 120 mile when it’s cold and I can’t quite get a definitive answer as to whether it has a heat pump or no (early ‘21 car). The app is also shocking, can’t even specify a charge % or a SoC to stop charging at, it lets you defer charge to a particular time and that’s it. Pre heating the car is also incredibly hit and miss, needs to be in Bluetooth range and even then it’s a pain. What’s the Megane app like? does it allow you to set 80% charge for instance?

i got to pick a lease car and i picked the Megane. i tried the Astra\Cupra\MG4\Kona and this was my top choice but it did feel like a choice with concessions. im missing the HUD that the astra does have. the MG4 drives great, its a lot cheaper, but inside its plastic and its touchscreen never works. The Kona felt like the highest quality car but it drove poorly and fuck those cameras checking if your eyes are looking at the road. i do hate the FOB\key from Renault, please yust give me a normal sized key. the view of its rear window is poor so the rearview camera\monitor is a great solution but the cameras field of view feels to low. and i would have preffered the charging socket position to be on the nose. Im still convinced its the best choice for me, but its not perfect.

Range : Cold weather (under 15c) + 20 inches wheels. I'll get the Scenic.

The majority of my car usage is now going to be long distance trips to see family - a 400 mile trip to Scotland or 230 mile trip to Somerset. Then the occasional run around, but I don't use the car to commute. On the Scotland trips we like to stop twice - one for a quick toilet break and the second for something to eat for dinner. While I can accept a slower charge speed while eating, the first stop is often a quick in and out, maybe not more than 15 minutes. For that kind of use case, what kind of charge speed minimum would be suitable to get us back up to 80%, and do you think the Megane is suitable for journeys like this? I'm a little concerned by the size and efficiency of the battery, and the charging speeds aren't exactly super fast to make up for that. Whereas competitors (granted, a class above) like the EV6 and IONIQ 5 have larger batteries and some of the fastest charging available. But at the same time, I don't want a huge car if I can avoid it, so long as it has enough space for a young family. And lease deals on the Megane Techno+ like you have are looking pretty good right now.

Be interesting to know how much discount this guy was given by Renault as seen other reviews and they are not praising the car as much as this guy?
@AutoEV

No discount given at all. It’s a long term test car, which I make very clear in the video. It returns to Renault this week. We run a long term test car just as many automotive media outlets do so we can report on our findings. It just happens to be a great car.

With the value of used ev's falling, I'd have got a used Renault Megane e tech & saved myself 1000s of pounds compared to buying a new one. 👍 Plus a new car is only going to stay new until the new plate change comes out every six months anyway. Yes I know you will have battery degregation on a used ev, but a low mileage used ev shouldn't lose that much battery power you'd have thought.🤔 I'm surprised you don't have a home wall charger, as that would save you money as well. 👍

Just curious, how can someone running an EV channel not have a home wall-box?

I think that’s a plus; lots of us rely on public charging only.

I always wonder why they dont have a small 500cc motor and a small petrol tank just yo five you that range shoild you need it. That would put all worries to bed. All thats needed is a very small engine to guve you a range boost if needed. Chsnces are you would hardly ever use it, but peace of mind driving is a seeling point

I love my car. Range a little disappointing in winter but hey ho. My big issue is Android Automotive which is glitchy at best and rubbish at worst. Am at the point of giving up and going back to Android Auto !!!!

It lost me at ‘barely does 200 miles’ on a full charge. It might be lovely to drive but surely 260 to 300 is a minimum these days. The much maligned Vauxhall Astra is far more efficient than this with a smaller battery.

Personally I wouldn’t touch any EV until there’s a guaranteed 400 mile range, and we’re probably a number of years away from that. If you’re wealthy enough to be an early adopter good for you, but it’s like buying a computer in the 1990s, these cars will be regarded as ridiculous museum pieces in ten years time.

Totally agree with you .I have a 280 mile journey this weekend . Time is an issue and the thought that, with this car, in winter , I would probably have to stop three times is just a no no .

I wouldn’t agree. Our long range Tesla Model Y does around 280-300 miles and we’ve found that absolutely fine for long journeys to France. In reality, on motorways, you are often charging from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes. That gives you a couple more hours or so until the next recharge. Honestly, I wouldn’t need or want more.

@@spsmith45 I drive a 17 year old Mazda . I am a pensioner . I will buy your Tesla second hand in ten years time, hopefully ,and then get another ten years of use out of it . That’s how I keep driving at the moment. Must be nice to be rich lol 😜

@@robtt997 Understood! Pensioner here too. We are lucky. The Tesla should be going strong after 10 years. Batteries have proven to be long-lasting.

The Tesla model S launched 11 years ago. I would no way call it a museum piece. Some people, would still pay but cheque in supermarkets, if they were allowed to.
