The pigeon showed that Jane knew that McAllister was Red John before he revealed himself to Jane, while everyone else thought it was Bertrem. If you go back to episode 6x03, McAllister saves Jane's life and then is startled by a pigeon and says, "I didn't see that coming, i hate them."

I know this is old but Patrick said he knew after the bomb and it was a mistake. 3 of the suspects had the tattoo. 1 of them was "dead" and he knew Red John set off the bomb and would have faked his death so it was the 1 of the 3 that was dead. McAllister. He definitely knew.

+Keyshell That would be true... if it weren't for RJ being portrayed as an almost omnipotent being before his identity was revealed; not to mention all the unanswered questions and loose ends. At the end of the day the ending of the RJ case/storyline was neither epic nor realistic, just extremely underwhelming.
@MazorKuziaki
@MazorKuziaki 8 лет назад
aeoncz That was the point. The point was to portray him as this allpowerful being who could do anything he wanted, and then to shatter that illusion and make you realize he's just some guy who's smarter than most other guys.
@appetizingly
@appetizingly 8 лет назад
Keyshell But that failed, spectacularly at that. Because of the divisive behavior and actions of RJ the serial killer and Thomas McAllister the sloppy dork, as well as the fact that half of the things he did or knew were never fully explained, or in some cases not at all. With the way he was portrayed throughout the series, he wasn't just a man. He was frighteningly brilliant, almost all-knowing and while he was somewhat overconfident, he had every reason to be. The unmasked McAllister was a cocky, careless, unprepared and frankly laughable run-of-the-mill villain nowhere near Jane's brilliance and cunning. It was absolutely anticlimactic and didn't make any sense whatsoever.

I quite like this scene because in it, Jane finally gets the upper hand on Red John. Throughout the seasons, with the help of his cronies, Red John is able to stay one step ahead of Jane, cover his tracks, and tie up loose ends. Without the Blake Association, Red John would've probably been caught years ago. Jane probably suspected McAllister was Red John and thus brought the pidgin. Remember the scene where McAllister saves Jane from the church roof and then declares he hates pidgins? Anyway, the reason why Red John approached Jane when he asked him if he could show him something was because Red John thought he had won. Jane, as far as Red John knew, didn't have a gun. He was at the mercy of Red John's barrel so why not humour a dead man? Red John was so blinded by his arrogance to be cautious. He wanted to gloat over his victory over Jane and he mistook Jane for being harmless. Big mistake. Finally, after five seasons Jane gets the upper hand. In such a humiliating moment, Red John made the mistake of thinking the game was over before the final buzzer sounded. The evil master-mind is defeated due to his own narcissism. Arrogance kills. (Remember, Jane's family got killed due to Jane's arrogance.) As for begging for mercy, all villains try to beg for mercy so they can turn around and stab their foe in the back. It's Red John's last-ditch effort to regain control of the situation and kill Jane. Jane, however, isn't having any of it.

Interesting theory but I didnt liked the end. Why would Red John, the evil mastermind beg for mercy? Remember the last episode of the third seasons? @victorpradha9946
@victorpradha9946 3 года назад
@@eliash2624 Because he wasn't an evil mastermind. He was just a perverted, sexually depraved killer who exploited the vulnerabilities of corruptible people to recruit their aid while he continued his twisted sadistic rampage of murder. His narcissism compelled him to play this "game" with Jane, wanting to break Jane...salivating over the thought of gloating and taunting Jane towards his final moments. That's why he didn't fear Jane as he thought he finally broke Jane entirely and had his gun trained on Jane, knowing Jane is not adept at hand to hand combat. And he begged for his life because for all his bravado about meting out death and judgment, RJ was just a coward who enjoyed getting the upper hand on his victims.

I'm getting really annoyed with people saying Tom Mccalister was a horrible choice for Red John. Everyone who says that doesn't know shit about television. He was a local sheriff in a small town. That is a brilliant cover. Nobody not even Jane would have suspected a sheriff. It doesn't matter that he's old. Most serial killers on television who are most clever and the most deranged tend to be older. Bruno Heller did a fine job selecting Thomas Mcallister as Red John. Xander Berkley did an amazing job.
@EnversPianoCollections
@EnversPianoCollections 10 лет назад
You have no idea of what youre talking about. Of course Xander made a good job, but Heller didn't. There's no coherence with the other 5 seasons. There's a lot of clues with no answer. 1- The "He is ma" clue. 2- you really think that mcallister can seduce lorelei and all the other women? 3- what's up with kristina frye? 4- How did RJ get the names on the list? 5- Roll tide? 6 - rock, paper & scissors... and more. I'm not saying Sheriff macallister is bad a RJ, I like it, but Heller didn't resolve it in the good way. For the people who watch de show casually, it's great. For the fans, who have been thinking theories about RJ for five years, it's a holly shit. Sorry about my english, im spanish. Salud!
@TheJandrews456
@TheJandrews456 10 лет назад
MusicToSmile Bruno Heller wasn't ever gonna answer every single clue that was layed out about Red John. Some of it was just left for the fans to ponder. His whole intention was to just finally reveal red john's identity. I watch tv shows every day of my life. I know exactly what i'm talking about. I watch several shows that deal with serial killers. I could argue all day. This was always Bruno Heller's story and fans who criticize his choices of Red John are immature and know nothing about television.
@TheJandrews456
@TheJandrews456 10 лет назад
MusicToSmile Mcallister was an evil, psychotic, sociopath and he preyed on people's vulnerabilites for years. He definitely would of had the power to seduce Loreli but I think he had more of a father-daughter relationship with her. She clearly admired him until she learned the truth about her sister. Some of those clues up there were never gonna be resolved. Heller can't resolve every single breadcrumb he placed in the show. If you've watched the show then you know what happened with kristina frye. Mcallister was the best choice out of all the suspects to be Red John. Most of the suspects would have been too obvious to be Red John. All the other suspects had to report to someone in their field. Thomas mcallister was his own boss. He was the local sheriff of Napa, california. Perfect choice for Red John. I say fuck everyone who thinks Bruno Heller did a bad choice of selecting Red John.

It's some sort of sickness or phobia. Like how Heffner was scared of Spiders. It happens and it's perfectly natural. I think that's meant to point out that Red John was just a mere human being, although a very intelligent one he still had weaknesses like normal people do. I think the bird option fits perfectly here. And for those saying how he didn't notice the bulge in Jane's jacket, have you watched the whole show? Throughout the series it was being plastered in our face how good Jane is as a showman and he was a master at distracting and manipulating people. It was always a game to win between him and Red John, stakes were very high but it was a game about who is more clever and in the end Jane won. My only questions are: 1. How did Red John know about the list 2 months before Jane told anyone? 2. How did Jane know McAllister was Red John and that he didn't die in the explosion? I know part of it is explained by Jane but I still feel there's more to it. If you have any ideas or facts about this I'd love to hear it. Love this show, my all time favourite that's for sure.

Fun fact: Me and my Dad met Xander Berkley at a convention once and we asked him when he found out he was going to be Red John. He said it was around the time of them filming the episode where Jane gathers the final 5 suspects at his house- not sure where that would be in their shooting schedule, if he shot earlier episodes after finding that out or not, but either way I thought that was interesting! He was very nice, and seemed to appreciate the fact we asked him about The Mentalist specifically too.

Well, he actually was in just one episode during the first five season. Then in another four episodes in season six (which make five in total). But don't get me wrong. In my opinion he was great choice. Although I would have liked it, if he had like one or two more appearances during the first five seasons, but on the other hand I find it logical, that Red John did not try to be near Patrick in his "real life". Also when we got the list of suspects, I expected him, since his job (some connections, and enough free time) fitted perfectly. Also his outer appearance and age fitted very well to me. But of course other suspicions (like Bertram and Haffner) could have been likely enough as well.

Couldn't agree more. I was very disappointed by it, I've only just marathonned the whole series in two months and I couldn't even remember the episode he was in! I was really hoping that it was either going to be Bret Stiles (not least because Malcolm McDowell is such a fantastic actor he could have sold the shit out of it, even though part of me is quite pleased that Bret seemed to be not such a bad guy after all) or one of his minions (Picardo or that CBI bloke) in his religious cult. That whole plot went nowhere as well. I never really thought Bertram was a good fit for it, but while Xander Berkeley is a good actor he should have been in it far more often to have him turn out to be RJ. Such a cop out.

Bruno Heller, the creator and executive producer of The Mentalist, after S06E08 was aired, in an interview: "And it’s real and honest and visceral. How that last scene between the two of them went was very much written and directed by Simon . The emotion that he brought to that, with all that pressure and with all of the story that’s gone by and all of the baggage, he did a really beautiful, intimate killing there. It’s hard but good to watch, I think. "

@galihhackers Месяц назад
Here's the translation of your text into English: McAlister is Red John, I am truly disappointed, there is so much I want to explain, but here’s the point: 1. How can a terrifying and intelligent serial killer like Red John be "afraid of dying" and "regretful of killing" when questioned by Patrick? 2. How can a victim whose wife and child were murdered, like Patrick Jane, still be "afraid of going to prison" and "try to escape"? That’s why the fake Red John episode in season 3 was such a great scene (if you’ve ever seen the movie Se7en, that had a better ending). Okay, the details were built up so much that they ended up conflicting with the facts. Let me explain: 1. Red John is actually "short." I forget which season it was when "ROY" returned to the woman who played the piano, and he also wore a suit (my guess at the time was Kirkman or Cho). 2. Lorelei said "Red John is similar to Patrick," whereas McAlister does not resemble Patrick's personality. 3. This is the part I am most CONFUSED about: Red John in all his actions used a "knife/dagger." So why, when he came to Patrick, did he bring a gun? (This raises the question of whether all the victims were killed by Red John or by different people posing as Red John). 4. Red John was identified because of a tattoo. This tattoo information could be obtained from a woman who was hired. Red John hired that woman to spy on the CBI. Seriously, is John that stupid????? If he wanted to spy on the CBI, he could have used Bertam, considering his WIDE CONNECTIONS AND POWER. 5. If Red John wanted to kill Patrick, it would be very easy given his power and connections. So why did he let Patrick live, and even when they met, Red John was afraid of dying, like I mentioned in point 1. Those are the details I remember (I’ll edit this if I forget something). My point is that Fake Red John (Timothy Carter) was actually a great choice if he was the real Red John, because his "AURA IS VERY EVIL" and his face and expressions were perfect for it.

I am not a fan of the Red John choice as many, but there are two things in this scene that are great. One is the music (very beautiful and fitting) and the other is Simon Baker's great acting, as usual. How he stands and listens attentively, trying not to give away his anger, staying close to the gun he hid, and preparing for a possible opening to strike. Terrific job.

This scene is kind of a mixed bag. As far as acting goes, it's pretty much flawless. Simon Baker delivers a great performance, as always, and I have no problem believing Xander Berkely is Red John. He plays the role of a calm and calculating psychopath perfectly, and yet there's a hint of madness in his eyes that's so appropriate for the character. But when it comes to writing, well. . . it was going fine until the stupid gun bit. I mean, come on. You're seriously telling me Red John wouldn't have searched the chapel before Jane arrived? This guy's supposed to be incredibly clever, and he's been one step ahead of Jane for the whole series, but in the end he's dumb enough to not only let his enemy choose their place of meeting, but it doesn't even occur to him to look for traps? From that point on, it only gets stupider until Red John's death scene, which was actually pretty cool. But even then: the admittedly interesting idea that Red John was a coward the whole time could have been better executed.
@moathnatour1278
@moathnatour1278 9 лет назад
Not entirely true. He let jane choose the place of the meeting and didn't search for a trap because he thought he had jane in a trap which turns to be quite the opposite! And that's the best of the scene, Jane turning the table!.
@barrygormley3986
@barrygormley3986 9 лет назад
Moath Natour That doesn't fit with what we learned about Red John throughout the series though. He's supposed to be a cautious killer. One of the first things we hear about him is "He would never risk capture just to taunt (Jane)." In the season four finale he didn't even show up to the meeting with Jane because he knew he might try something, and that was in a place Red John himself had chosen. I get what you're saying about Jane turning the table, and that is a really cool idea, but the way they executed it was very inconsistent . It would have made more sense if that gun was decoy meant to lure Red John into a false sense of security. Then when he reveals that he found it, Jane could spring his REAL trap. That would show Jane finally winning the battle of wits, but without diminishing Red John's intelligence after they spent the whole series building it up.
@yipiyayo3035
@yipiyayo3035 9 лет назад
Barry Gormley The reason is because the gag is up, he's like the last of the list and had to kill Jane. If he want to end Jane, he definitely will do it himself. Not searching the church is because he's complacent already, he expect Jane to be trapped like he's always 2 steps in front.

I think the main problem with Red John will always be that they had no idea who Red John was. For so long he was simply an idea that had no real form. They never stopped to ask who Red John was until the very end I think McAllister was the best choice out of the options they came up with, but I would have written the confrontation scene differently. There’s a lot they did well like the end where he begs for mercy or when he gets mad at Jane for insulting him again. I would have gone for something more like the Tommy/Thomas change and have him truly embody the idea and history of Red John, only to have it torn away in the end I think they tried to do this with the voice, but it’s so short and they spend so much time on the idea that “in the end they’re both nobody”. There’s just not enough time to really link the two characters together

It was the best ending to Red John ever! Jane knew that he was Red John because of the bomb mistake where McAllister faked his death and the truth is always the opposite as mentioned by Jane in this episode. Stiles and Haffner could also be Red John because they died but they didn't have the 3 dots tattoo so it was CLEAR to Jane who was Red John. Director did a great job choosing McAllister as Red John although many might disagree because of his absence in many episodes. However, if the director chose any other people on that list who we are familiar with, we would have say we knew it and it will not be as big of a surprise as this finish. Well played! 😁

Maybe surprise is less important than coherence for a lot of people? lol I spent the 5 entire seasons praying that RJ wouldn't be "just a random guy" because it'd be such a letdown. It's like you're writing a Tarantino movie but in the end who does all the killing is a random person that made 1 quick appearance in the beginning. Not worth it. Not deserved. Poorly written. However, the choice itself was not the biggest letdown, but the absolute lack of explanation whatsoever about his backstory. No, let's just say RJ is this guy and then have Jane killing him minutes after finding out and that's it, let's move on with the "killer of the week" theme for the 120th time and let's forget about the association or RJ or anything. The list of suspects comes down to Red John having a similar level of intelligence and memory to Patrick Jane. He sees everything and tracks everyone through the Blake Association, he'll know who Jane has shaken hands with and who the likely living suspects are.
@Henrique.Souza0601
@Henrique.Souza0601 Год назад
Can't be that. Jane could've met plenty other people by himself like he does almost every single episode. Like he goes to a hospital, let's assume he shook hands with ALL the doctors and patients there? Several times he's by himself, and even if someone was following him the entire time - which is EXTREMELY unlikely to happen without Jane noticing it - they would not have all the names of the people he was meeting. This was something the writers did to, again, put RJ in a demigod level, just to make him the dumbest and most pathetic criminal of the show so far. First he almost screams to Jane his name was indeed between those 7 names instead of misleading him in any possible way (and there were many, many ways); then goes to Jane's house with a bomb, even when he doesn't know if Jane was trying to kill all of them for some reason (what stood in the way of Jane blowing up a bomb and killing them all? Or even Styles or Raffner having a way to pull a stunt to kill everybody there, etc) and then finally the last showdown where there's no way in hell a meticulous, almost godlike being like RJ would be alone with Jane in a room without no one making sure he's secure at all times. He'd never be the one with the gun pointed to Jane, this was just absurd and poorly written. Also, is RJ that smart really? Because this show seems to go in the opposite way of the advice "show, don't tell". They just tell us RJ is this almost deity entity and he performs stuff that are almost unbelievable for 5 seasons only for him to be just an average SOB in the end. It's a little odd, the somewhat uneven way RJ is dealt with, while the relationship between Jane and Lisbon is genuinely one of the most gorgeous, intricate friends-to-lovers stories I have ever seen in a procedural, and especially since the RJ showdown was always a primary concrete concept, but Jane and Lisbon's relationship kindof just sprouted from the ground and grew over everything else. I'm glad for that though; everybody always looks to The Great Red Dragon as the centerpiece of the allegory, but it's The Woman Clothed With The Sun who triumphs. Lisbon was always more important than Red John.

After Renfrew was killed it became clear to me Red John's real power was in his connections, so much so that if it weren't for the murder of Jane's family, I would have assumed there was no single Red John, but rather an entire group using the name. I can't blame people for wanting a showdown as epic as Greek Mythology, but lining up RJ with every caught serial killer or fallen cult leader and somehow, it's just about right. I was also thrilled with who they chose for the role. The first time he showed up I said "one episode? What a total waste of Xander Berkeley!" I hate that argument though. They wrote the character as being incredibly smart and capable. He should be beaten in that state. However, they lacked the creativity to do it or just to put it on Styles who was the only one of the 7 with the right profile to be everything they sold as RJ. No, let's choose that dumb Sheriff guy from season 1 who lost at rock paper scissors to Jane and make people wondered about woww, he was a character, he was testing Jane, blablabla when we know it was a last minute desperate call because they got lost into their own lore and hype. You hate the argument because you believe Red John was depicted as a genius. I don't believe he actually was portrayed that way--not really. He's actually pretty sloppy more than once, almost gets caught several times over, preys mostly on vulnerable women and children. What he gets away with is predominantly if not wholly due to his connections. Being a cult leader does indicate talent and intelligence -- but not exactly in the way people think. The unkillable God, the self-sufficient mega-genius, the force of primal nature? It's an illusion, it was always an illusion--that's what cult leaders do. In the end they fall, frail and pathetic. I mean what ending would have been better? A Harry Potter giant chess board? A harpoon through a whale's heart? What do people imagine they wanted in the final showdown? Why were they expecting fireworks when the first fake Red John died so simply? When Jane himself made it so clear throughout the entire show that there is no such thing as magic, and that his abilities while incredible, didn't make him infallible or all-knowing? I got exactly what I wanted in this ending --it was simple, and brutal, and intimate. Red John didn't deserve a firework show.

4:13 Most satisfying moment in the whole series :) I think it basically shows what kind of nature serial killers actually have. They seem to be dreadful with mighty power and violence. But the fact is, given actual serial killers in real life, they are as cowards as little lambs and their minds are full of self-loathing in that regard. That's why they try fullfil such complex of theirs by killing others vulnerable and seeing people shudder while they are hiding in the darkness.

McAlister is Red John, I am truly disappointed, there is so much I want to explain, but here’s the point: 1.

Found this reveal interesting on so many levels. All the "sins" that McAllister accuses Jane of, he's more guilty of. But because of McAllister's own arrogance (that he can't believe Jane could be smarter than him) he can't see that Patrick has figured it out. Jane has also learned from his pride, McAllister didn't. So interesting.

You're right, I would have expected Red John to be put away in the finale, like they did in the Monk series, take out the big bad guy in the end, but The Mentalist went a different way. The point of season 7 was for the people who loved Jane's work and loved the characters, especially Jane and Lisbon. Sadly we didn't get to see much of Grace and Wayne. However, Jane and Lisbon getting married, with her being pregnant. It's a nicer ending for those who cared about Jane than to only see him get his revenge. I, along with others, suspected something was up with Sheriff McAllister on S:1/E:2 when he tried to lure Grace to his car. When he became one of the seven finalists of Red John suspects, I told my mom, that's him! They never tied that scene back to anything. Then when Heller said it was a last minute decision, l just didn't buy it. In a literature course l took in school, my professor told us it doesn't matter what authors say after write it, it's how readers interpret it. l didn't buy it at the time. Now I'm not too sure.

@@Henrique.Souza0601 » Yes, the idea that a serial killer could be the head of a vast criminal literary organization called the Blake Foundation, made up of police, federal agents, judges and attorneys is absurd. If Red John had just been a serial killer, that would have been fine, but this other garbage is just that. What was Bruno Heller thinking? The decision to make Sheriff McAllister Red John was fine, everything else was fluff. They also should not have drawn it out like they did. Even Jane chasing McAllister down sidewalks and through neighborhoods and parks was lame. It's like the 8mm movies I used to shoot as a kid. Very juvenile shooting and editing.

When I first started watching the series, I always thought RJ would be someone really close to Jane that was working with him in the CBI. I first thought that it could be Teresa Lisbon, but after some more thinking, I came to a conclusion that it couldn't have been her. After I found out that Craig O'Laughlin was RJ's insider, I thought that it could be Van Pelt, but later in the series it shows he's a 100% man, so that meant it wasn't her. I started suspecting Wayne Rigsby because it seemed logical- he was really close to her. After Jane has narrowed the list down to 7 suspects, I was so sure that Brett Partridge was RJ, but when Bruno Heller made us think that Gale Bertram was RJ I believed it because it made sense. When Sheriff McAllister has been revealed as RJ I was shocked, didn't expect that at all, but I think this scene could have been much better. I mean, Jane is trying to hunt the man down for so many years, and we don't know who he is for 5 seasons and they let him live...
@franniez7068
@franniez7068 8 лет назад
...for 15 minutes maximum? Don't get me wrong, they are amazing actors and this scene was amazing in terms of acting, but I think that Brett Partridge would have been a much better choice for RJ. He worked as a forensic at the CBI which meant that he has access to the corps and that it would've been easy for him to remove any evidence if it was needed. His odd behaviour and admiration for RJ could have been his way of hiding that he was RJ, which he wasn't really good at because RJ was egoistic and theathric. And also I think it would have been better if RJ was younger, because it doesn't really make sense that Lorelei Martins was his mistress. Also I think this scene was rushed, I would like to see how RJ did all the tricks, and it didn't really make sense to me that Patrick cut him off like that. I think Patrick would have "played with him" more knowing how much of his time he spent trying to figure out who RJ was. I just wish this wasn't rushed so much, it could've been done better.
