I think the most interesting thing about this scene is that Patrick tries to take the moral high ground on Thomas, but when Thomas rebuffs him and confesses that he loved every moment of that revenge, it genuinely resonates with Patrick. The only mistake that Thomas makes is thinking that Patrick wouldn’t understand when-in reality-he was maybe the only one who really could.
This man has acted in several crime dramas, and almost in everyone, he plays an innocent soul, hiding the wolf beneath and everytime he will awe you with his skills and emotions
Is it really pigeonholing when you're just that brilliant at the part? No amount of effects could've done better at transitioning from a handicapped innocent to a cold-blooded psychopath. It's chilling every time I see it. Edward Norton has nothing on this guy.
"I can see you." Some of the most terrifying words one human can ever say to another. It was those words that got Thomas to drop the Tommy act. He even smiled, as if he was finally glad that someone had finally seen through the act.
It was probably relief. "Tommy" is probably a very exhaustive role to play. And it wasn't some "dumb cop" that saw through him, but a smart and clever man. Probably felt comfortable speaking to someone he thought was on his own level.
the “I can see you” line brought a tear to my eye. Imagine someone looking you straight in the eye and telling you that you should drop the act because they can see right through you. brilliant.
No, I feel a warmth in Simon Baker's performance. His smile on the poster is what made me click this on Amazon and 4 seasons in, I couldn't be happier.
Jane is definitely scarier when you see his eyes light up when Thomas talks about revenge being redemptive. It's like Thomas is whetting Jane's appetite for the revenge he so desperately seeks.
I like shows like this, but only when I completely disregard the fact that people usually don't confess their crimes ever, unless there's a settlement.
Edward Norton did it better in 1996 in Primal Fear. Identical story line with a far superior actor. Edward Norton even got nominated for best supporting actor a the Oscars that year for the role.
no one can change my mind about this show being one of the best shows that have ever been made. it’s so interesting, the plot and the actors are absolutely amazing and it is so underrated!
@@isabelapeluso9275 i totally get you. like i start watching some tv show and i literally can’t stay focused. i then come back to mentalist, because it is just so good
Was pretty good for a while, but once they resolved Red John the last leg felt like they were just stretching out the show. Wasn't a fan of how they handled him and Lisbon getting together either. Rushed the final part, imo.
@@willieoelkers5568 i agree with u on that one. i mean i still like it after they discovered red john but the final episode is just too rushed. they shouldn’t just end it so quickly
Thomas is a damn good actor. Whoever that guy is, great side character, perfect facial expressions, and the ability to change personalities at the flick of a switch.
@@junioralvarado629 Every single time, I think that's one of the greatest nuances of watching it through the second time, realizing the prying questions into how it felt the moment they got their revenge and this I feel is the moment that sealed it, Jane became a lot more forward in his search of red john and a lot more aggressive beautiful writing start to finish
@@kyin45 too bad they portraited his team as kind of useless to make him godlike detective. The fact that the cops are mostly clueless, doing almost no detective work made the show kind of cheap.
yes, i think he also saw the narcisistic manipulative genius in him that he used to be, and he knew that tickeling his ego with the "you should be proud of yourself" will break the ice.
Master of Gwent , I did a quick google search, the ‘Revenge’ quote has been used throughout Asia and some also say it’s a Greek quote. I heard the line in a Movie, so I’m just stealing from that.....:0)
@@jimd385 The Greek quote you are referring to goes as follows: "Όποιος σκάβει τον λάκκο του άλλου, πέφτει μέσα ο ίδιος!" which means "whoever digs another's grave, will fall in it themselves" There's no mention of a second grave nor that the grave will contain both the person who dug it and the person it was intended for, so it's sort of ambiguous. It could mean that someone who plots murder will end up the victim, or that revenge will cost you exactly what you are taking away.
I will always say this was one of the best & most underrated shows of all time. The way they weaved the Red John story arc throughout while still focusing on other stories was brilliant.
@Mauri Font not really. Whom would have you liked as Red John? Somebody young that makes no sense considering it takes a lot of time to build up the Blake association and gain so much wide spread power? The only one that would have made more sense was Stiles because he had that power BUT that would have been too obvious. Another option would have been a character that wasn't introduced before but then they'd have to drop the "handshake" thing. Mcallister was a solid choice. Also the worst series endings ever has got to be game of thrones...himym is a close second.
Frederick Koehler gave an awesome performance in this scene, as did Simon Baker. It was a brilliant piece of writing by Ashley Gable and Bruno Heller. Well done to all involved.
It´s wonderful. feels so natural. And in a way you can understand and feel why Thomas did it and what it gaves to him afterwarts. I totally buy that he will be in prison and be satisfied.
The two slow blinks of jane when he heard thomas saying, "you wouldn't understand" shows all his feelings about revenge accurately. What an amazing actor.
My favourite line of this scene is Jane saying “Of course, the Pequod. Silly of me” with a calmly serious expression. Because when it comes to him, “silly” mistakes like this are always made with a carefully thought out purpose and that line and the delivery really show that. The best character ever written on tv in my opinion.
It’s ironic, Jane talking about the cost of revenge with him. That line “you wouldn’t understand” and how Baker reacted to it, it’s wonderful. What a performance from both actors.
I don't think his naive playing was convincing. That he may be the one, not necessarily, but that he is playing an act, and not stupid, that's very clear. You can tell from his eyes (which may be intentional by the actor, but nevertheless).
Knowing Jane's story with Red John that "I know the price of revenge, and it's worth it" and "you wouldn't understand" hit really hard‼️ best scene no doubt
This was one of the best, most underrated TV shows out there. The sheer brilliance and intelligence of it. But at the same time, the poetic aura and the depth of emotions and the wisdom. A true masterpiece! Patrick Jane is one of the most amazing and most complex characters ever written. I will never forget him or this tv show.
THIS.... is a FUCKING amazing actor. Fredrick Koehler is one of my favourite actors ever. The way his face and attitude changed was brilliant, and his confession to Patrick was chilling. I'm serious, this guy needs more recognition! He deserves it! Thumbs up if someone agrees!
People like him walk the streets every day. But they can never really hide. Their eyes always give them away. There is always that spark of intelligence in their eyes.
But Tommy doesn't know that Patrick perfectly understands him because he wants to do the same to Red John so in a way Patrick enjoyed hearing those words because now he is assured that his revenge on Red John would be rewarding, satisfying and redemptive.
I am a fan of "The Mentalist" and I have watched every episode at least 4 times and I'm still continuing to watch it. This scene is also one of my favorites.
I've watched every episode of "The Mentalist" at least 3 times now, one of my favorite tv series in 65 years of viewing. Simon Baker truly created an icon and memorable character in his portrayal of Patrick Jane.
It's actually much more than that. When Tommy said that he would not understand. The reality is quite the opposite as no other person in that room except Jane who understands EXACTLY how it feels like.
Times when supporting actors are outdoing the leads. Effortlessly. "You wouldn't understand." This line sent me chills. I exactly know where he's coming from.
I love The face Jane's pulling when Tommy is telling him how worth it revenge is. Its such a small detail but when you look a bit closer you really appreciate it, Simon baker is one hell of an actor :D
There is a lot of episodes were talking about revenge, it keeps us reminded about the bigger picture than solving a particular crime of that episode which makes me love this show.
@@stevekaczynski3793 No, actually we have a big beer culture but i have never seen it or heard that someone drunk it here. But i really don't know why they made it raspberry juice instead cause no one is drinking it either haha
Both actors deserve an Oscar for this! The microexpresions of both are just true... First when Thomas comes out. And then when Patrick get the only real answer he wanted... Was the revenge worth it? PURE GOLD!
What I love about Jane is that he isn't satisfied with finding the culprit, he has to go inside their mind and break them down so they're so mentally exhausted they confess everything
Nah. This man wasn't mentally exhausted. There is a small pause before he confesses and he smiles, knowing what Jane just asked and instead of lying, he accepted everything and didn't care that he confessed. He was happy, not exhausted.
He is very smart! He didn't actually confess, he just said he watched them burn in agony and that he loved it. Kinda similar to the movie i cant remember the name but the one with Gerard butler that takes revenge on the entire system, after it fails to punish the killer of hes wife and daughter. Where he says he planned it over and over in hes head :) this guy does the same thing, very clever boy haha
I've watched the show and definitely get Janes brilliance as a "Mentalist" . However, the twist for this episode is even more shocking than when Red John was officially revealed. Jane knew his suspicions were true when he got corrected about Ahabs boat. It was brilliant.
Agree I miss it too. Good writing. In the city I can tell who watched the mentalist because some people would repeat certain phrases Patrick would say. It helps that he was kinda handsome, us ladies like that stuff.
Oh yeah, I love this episode too! How Tommy "transform" to THomas is scary. The same body and face, but a different person. And I love how this case got solved because of an old book. Amazing!
I love Jane's blink at the end, when he says "You wouldn't understand." Because, he -does-. Jane, more than anyone else, understands the lust for revenge, and the full knowingness and acceptance that one has to put themselves through before seeking it. Beautiful writing, beautiful acting. Amazing tv show.
I felt bad for that kid when he asked,"that root beer coming?". It sounded so sad and pathetic and it seemed like Jane was picking on him. When he dropped the act, my mind was BLOWN!
I have been coming back to watch this video every few months for the last 8 years. What really makes this scene so beautiful is not the casual switch of Tommy or how Jane reveals him. It's the last line - "You wouldn't understand". It's ironic, since we know that revenge has what driven Jane up until that point. Jane smiles, at this irony. But I think he also smiles because Tommy validates his path - the pleasure that he got from extracting his revenge reassures Jane that his own path of revenge is not futile; he will feel this joy too as he finally takes down Red John.
Not only is this wonderfully acted, it's also really cleverly written. There's not only a parallel between Tommy and Ahab but also between Tommy and Jane. I wonder if Tommy ever heard of what Jane ended up doing to RJ. I wish there had been a re-visitation of his character. He could have developed so interestingly, especially since The Mentalist is more about interesting main characters than it is about having really deep characters for the killers. It's a real pity that The Mentalist is finishing. I can't help but feel that as great as the show was, 7 seasons aren't enough to capture all the possibilities that could have been.
i so agree with you. I think its a pitty if they had the chance for more seson they could have pult up a new smart serial killer, or killer, or anyway I think patrick jane was a hillerious, amazing main character and personaly its one of the only characters of tv history I found briliant in all his details and facettes, also truely beautiful acted by simon backer a perfect choice in my eyes. credits to all writers and bruna hellers ... I am so sad it's ending
Agreed, this was a real clever scene indeed. Sadly I never found the protagonists very interesting (aside from Jane and Cho, I just liked him) The recurring antagonists were often much more interesting like Morena Baccarin's and Malcolm McDowell's characters.
I found Cho interesting because of his back story. Former gang member changed his ways. The whole baseball episode was also really good at sort of showing us his past same as the episode of the kid who stole his car. I also really like lisbon as well. Rigsby and van pelt are whack tho lol
Illiteracy is the bread and butter of people like Hitler, Stalin, Putin, Xi Jinping, Trump, Bolsonaro et cetera. For to be illiterate means to be easily manipulated, a known quantity, closed off in your own little box, easily moved.
Yeah. Such good acting. Somewhat subtle yet noticeable. Jane is always smiling to some degree, but it broadens and reaches his eyes after Tommy says revenge was redemptive.
Ytalo Rafael 97 Couldn’t agree more. It’s like the writers just gave up. Red John is supposed to be an untouchable. Not who it turned out to be. Loved the show so much up to that point. If it wasn’t for Simon Baker’s perfect portrayal of Patrick Jane I would have never continued to watch.
Thank you for uploading this, for getting me intrigued few months ago and leading me to discover what I recognise to be one of the best TV series ever made. I just finished the last episode today and it was one hell of a ride. Patrick Jane is gonna be my new favourite character for a long long time. What an amazing show.
0:58 Blink and you’ll miss it! When Tommy corrects Jane and tells him that Captain Ahab’s ship is called The Pequod rather than The Peapod, Tommy’s eyes dart back and forth, he realizes his was getting too smart and blew his cover. At 1:49 Jane tells Tommy to lose the act and Tommy smirks, a nervous tick or a nod of recognition, him saying *damn Jane, you’re good.* but it doesn’t stop there. 1:57 he struggles with the dilemma of giving up or keeping the Tommy act going, in a desperate attempt at trying to get off, he asks, “that root beer coming?” The way he phrases this question shows he’s less confident and his voice shows some recoil. Frederick Koehler pulled this character off brilliantly.
Just finished the whole show on Prime. Out of all the seasons / episodes, I will never forget this one. Incredible. You guys are all right when you say The Mentalist is underrated... even to this day, I haven’t found a show to compare it to.
Bosch gave me a lot of comfort after finishing The Mentalist. They're not necessarily similar but it's so ripe with personality, and its own distinct aura. Well worth a watch if you haven't already.
Is also the lighting. I just see the change from Tommy asking for the root beer to the real person. He leans back and his face wholly lightened. This is also a good performance from the camera man and the director.
@@radschele1815 There is an instance before that happens while he is contemplating just before and after the I can see you there is a change in his xpression. It is slight, but it is there. And I think that makes all the difference.
I got some theories that explain this effect : The frowned eyebrows show way more confidence and less surprise in the eyes. The mouth closed show that he controls his respiration too, so he isn't in fight or flee mode. Thomy is never in control of the situation and seems lost, but just with these facial movement thomas appears way more confident and dangerous. + the really great work on the voice too
@@L_Lawliet1907 being least sane is desirable to you? jps joker is just narcisistic and selfish. hes not crazy, hes logical. hes deranged, but he has an agenda. insane people dont act like he does.
@@thalivenom4972 Logical? An agenda? Are we watching the same movie here? He has stated in the movie itself that “do I look like a clown who can start a movement” at the near end. And when he gets freed from the police car, he’s just being carefree, without a worry in the world, meanwhile the people who support his movement think he has a plan. He doesn’t. He is literally the exact opposite of what you say, if he was say logical he wouldn’t be living in fantasies as shown in the movie. The moment he starts wearing the makeup he doesn’t give a shit about what he does, thus basically a behaviour of a broken man pushed to the limits. I’m definitely not someone with a degree in psychology, but even a 13 year old can identify a man with nothing to lose.
One of the best crime thriller series.. After this whenever I watch another series felt like it's not good enough like mentalist. Those Characters and narration were top notch.
"Hello... nice to meet you" Favorite line of his. Every time he finally convinces someone to drop the act and be real with him, the first thing he does is greet them like a human being for the first time.
Props to the actor who played the killer i love when actors can just switch like that on fly. Christopher Reeves did that exact kinda thing when switching from clark kent to superman
0:49 jane test his memory by making a mistake on purpose calling the the ship peapod.. him answering and correcting jane saying it's a pequod just confirms that he doesn't have brain problems
Yes and no some people with mental disabilities actually are able to hone in and direct a lot of their thinking and understanding to certain things, usually very specific things. Some people are say, able to remember every single Yankees game ever played and every member on the team at any time but ask them what they had for dinner yesterday and they may have no clue. Some may be able to play video games as if they were gods of them but ask them to find something on a computer and they never would or could take hours, it all varies. I believe the ability, or disorder, is called savant syndrome (could be very wrong but I do believe it’s at least similar to that) so him focusing and memorizing moby dick may be on the smaller scale from what I described but it’s not entirely unlikely for him to easily remember it in fact I’d say it’s extremely plausible. Just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in.
As an aside I’m obviously no medical expert and have no formal training these are just observations I’ve made over time and in my current job so if I’m wrong I’d rather people just say so and not try to insult as there’d be no point in doing so.
TheMurry7 true but early in the episode they go to Thomas’s trailer. There they find children’s books. Made to look like he could only read at a child’s level. Hidden away Jane found moby dick. That’s how Jane knew he was pulling an act.
@@billcollins2798 No, it's savant syndrome. Idiot savant is not the term anymore since the discoveries of acquired savants and savants without any significant drawbacks.
Looks like Jane admires him in a way. He knows he's on the same path. Jane: "I confess, I never did get to the ending. Ahab does die doesn't he?" Tommy: "Yes, but so does the whale." Jane: "That's my point, revenge doesn't come cheap." Tommy: "Oh, spare me your moralizing. I know what revenge costs. It's worth the price." And then at the end when Tommy says: "You wouldn't understand,", Jane blinks twice, almost to silently say that he does understand. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. Amazing acting regardless.
Jane is on his own quest for revenge, and is a killer himself. I recall at least 3 murders he commits, one indirect (when he sets up a guy to be killed by Red John).
not reading into it..or if you are then you aint alone. I noticed the same thign and saw the whole scene again..you can see everyone blink every now and then, but jane doesnt.he blinks only once towards end when Tommy starts to talk. And after Tommy says Jane wouldn't understand, Jane blinks twice deliberately.Twice.While smiling slightly. Thats not nothign.
I love this show. The writers are top notch, the acting especially Jane's is amazing and so so clever and real. It is by far one of the best Crime dramas out there and one of the best shows ever
The Mentalist is in my top 5 shows easily. Simon Baker became a favorite actor with the role of Jane. This was an awesome scene. The whole cast was amazing.
Patrick really is the modern era Sherlock Holmes, maybe he is better. He is so Smart, so Quick-thinking and so confident in his skills. I love his character
I think Jane is better. Holmes was stunted in that he could never relate to women, also probably had bi-polar disorder which he medicated with opiates.
I just saw this episode last night. My wife and I love the mentalist. We've watched each episode twice and are starting a 3rd time. Pathetic I know... It is entertaining, humorous and not too heavy from a violence perspective..
