I love how Patrick answers all his questions without playing around as he usually does. He knows these are Steiners last moments, every second counts and is irreplaceable for someone about to die.
This was by far the most powerful moment in the series. Congratulations to everyone involved. The scene was so small, so quiet, so moving. It speaks to everyone who has experienced the fading health of someone close. There, not there.
it's amazing to see that everybody (including me) I've seen on the Internet agree that this scene got the most powerful impact. at least we all got something in common
And don't forget the courage to display this event on national television in a country where euthanasia is a great taboo and against the law. More doctors need to speak out about this. People dying a slow and agonizing death in a time where it is backward and immoral to allow it, while doctors knowingly withhold a pain-relieved passing, is absurd. The medical community needs to convince those in power to allow this so that the final hours or even months of this kind of suffering can be prevented. I am proud to say I am Dutch and my government has been sufficiently wise to allow the medical community to be heard and apply their knowledge.
I didn't really remember Steiner much from before, but they made him so lovable in this episode. The mending the fences, and Steiner going from his dislike of Jane's antics, to almost a childlike wonder that he did magic, and Jane using his antics instead to distract Steiner and give him some joy before his passing. This made me cry, this is what storytelling is about
I think what changed Patrick's mind about being a witness was how the doctor apologized about it being an imposition. The man was going to die, yet he still considered how it would affect Jane. How could Patrick refuse a man with such courage?
i dont think i’ve ever attached to a character i’ve only seen for several minutes. the sadness, relief of satisfaction knowing how pat tricked him, fading away calmly like a candle
This is perhaps the saddest and most touching scene of the series, as others have said. One of the less fun lessons you learn as you get older is the realization that while death is inevitable, dignity in death has no such guarantee. I loved that Dr. Steiner, so often the victim of Patrick's irreverent genius, was able to achieve some peace at the end of his journey due to those same gifts. It was one of the few times I genuinely liked Patrick on the show.
over 10yrs later and this legitimately still makes me tear up. They did a fantastic job with this scene. A nice subtle tone and then silence as Steiner passes away and Jane removes his tea cup.
Dexter Haven this scen was pure art I’m not denying this, but I suggest you should watch more movies, just to change your mind go watch the blade runner death scene, where the deviant says “I’ve seen a lot of things human couldn’t understand”
I like that Patrick uses a basic magic trick in the last few seconds of doctors life, almost as if he reverted to a child like state in his final moments. A very simple but brilliantly written and acted scene.
i just realized... the music in the end kind of mimics a beating heart, and when Steiner stopped moving and Jane took away the cup, the beat (pun lol) stopped, mimicking Steiner's heart that just stopped...
The only very scene that make me really cry. I mean, there's a lot of emotional moments in the show, some deeper than others, but this one here is special. Very beatiful and also makes me sad.
This is such a beautiful, heart-wrenching scene. Well written, perfectly acted, direction, lighting and cinematography all working together in harmony. Possibly the best scene in this series.
“The mark of a great man is one who knows when to set aside the important things in order to accomplish the vital ones” One of my favourite episodes and such a powerful moment. This proves Patrick Jane is a good man. He could’ve just fooled around but he didn’t, he didn’t waste Steiner’s time, he sat down with him and comforted him in his last moments.
What I love about this is scene is not only does Jane never explicitly say yes to it, they both just understand, he also does not play around or keeps his trick to himself. There is just about a second in which Steiner looks pleading as if to say "please just tell me", but Jane was gonna tell him anyway. Jane straight up just admits it. He knows there is no reason to toy around and he shows great respect toward Steiner by simply telling him how he did it. Then showing him the trick, he helps him enjoy his last moments a bit.
Every single time I see this scene my eyes well up. It just hits every one of my feels and has such a strong message. It especially hits hard knowing the kind of history these 2 had of disliking and mocking each other.
The only scene I had more of an emotional reaction to was the ending scene in "Charlotte" when he knowingly drinks belladonna again to try to see his daughter. It's just him making tea with a very moving musical motif over it. Haunting. This was a close second.
Top 3 moment in the show for me, just always gets me, one of my others being when Cho apologises to the mother for not answering his friends call for help, and the other being Tommy in Flame Red. immaculate acting/scenes
Seeing Patrick admit that he had been in a metal ward effected affected me just as much. He says, "There is no shame in having a mental breakdown, but I admit, I'm ashamed of it." It's not just the stigma of having a breakdown, it is taking responsibility for what led to it. That hurts more if you feel your actions lead to the harm of those you love.
This, with no doubt, had me crying, and I absolutely love Dr. Stiener I just wanted to hug him. I wish we saw more of him. This was such a powerful and heart warming moment between Jane and Stiener. This is in my top 10 moments of the whole show. He is a character other then the mains ones that stood out. ❤ why had this show not won any awards 😕
I remember this scene well. It struck something in me that I recall looking away from the screen while it played. "It's there and now it's gone" followed by silence. I finally saw the scene that belonged to these words and gosh is it heart wrenching.
One of the most powerful and best acted scenes of the entire series. I love how they didn’t end with the theme song music, just faded into the silence that spoke a thousand words on its own…I sob every time I see this scene
My god, this scene. Cannot watch it without tearing up, and I've seen it over a dozen times since it first aired. Love this show, and this is one of the best moments in the whole run.
That "Patrick.. Thank you" hit me like a truck man, jesus its so sad yet beautiful at the same time. That empathy and help from Jane to let him cross to the other side with ease and peacefully !
I have been binging this show while awaiting my next employment contract and I have to say this was one of the most moving moments I have watched on a TV show. It wasn't gushing over with emotion, it was dignified, simple and very well done.
This scene absolutely floored me - what an incredible show. Character writing on point, and the acting from Simon Baker was on point - really brought this scene to life and made it more than a scene in a show.
I cried. Hard. I imagined being Steiner, then imagined being Jane. Both are such horrible positions to be in. Steiner was not alone in the end. Jane was probably the best person to be with at that moment. Incredibly sad and hard to watch but what an acting. I still have a clump in my throat.
im so glad Patrick stayed with him until the end i think Steiner were more of a Father Role because Patrick always make jokes with him like a little Child :)
I know it's just a movie. But this scene touched me very much in my heart and soul. I had goose bumps and tears. In the end, life is about humanity. Being there for someone. Love, respect and appreciation. These are values that we need so much in our time. Then the world would be a very different place today.
The Mentalist will always be one of my favorite shows of all time due to moments and scenes like this, the show is heavily underrated and under appreciated. You could think of the coin trick as a metaphor for life itself, "It is there and then it is gone", You're only alive while you're still alive, so you have to make sure to make the most of it, Because when you're dead, you're dead. It's really quite simple.
wow, the first time I watched the Mentalist start to finish and I missed only this episode. Started re-watching them again a few weeks ago and saw this one, can't believe I missed it.
I rewatched this episode in tv after finished the whole series. I think Patrick is the only friend Steiner ever had in the series. This is easy my favorite episode from the entire series.
I don't understand why this show never won an Emmy! It was one of the best shows ever on TV and the fans all know it. It should have won Emmys every year it was on, and Golden Globes and best actor, actress, supporting actors and actresses! Best writing and directing! I only recently discovered it and I'm on my 3rd time watching through the entire 7 years. Wish it had gone at least one more year.
Undoubtedly one of the finest scenes in any series; it shows the humane side of Patrick Jane ; very well acted by both the characters; moves you to tears ; Miss The Mentalist
This is such a well acted scene. Jane has such respect for Dr Steiner's request that he changes his mind and stays while he dies, using a magic trick to distract him from what's happening.
The look of sadness Patrick has after Dr Steiner passes away. A look of I will miss you my friend. This is by far the best scene in The Mentalist they ever made. The apology from Dr Steiner for asking Patrick what he did showed his compassion. The compassion Patrick had, he couldn't leave his friend to die alone.
I enjoy rewatching The Mentalist. This scene and the relationship Jane had with him was an intriguing one, barely featured but it was provoking in terms of emotion.
I felt compelled to search for this video on youtube, to see if other people were as touched as I was when watching it. That one is a good reason to cry, pfiuuu.
This scene always gets to me. It's so powerful, and triggers a lot of interesting conversation with people when you show them. Anyone who reacts with strong negitivity is one I choose to distance myself from.
This hurts so much. Still I come back this scene every couple of times. Mostly on my mind. And by this comment it's been 3 years since I've last seen it.
been rewatching the show and just got to this episode, man it's heart breaking, Jane's a good guy giving Steiner a fun last couple of days and letting him peacefully pass away.
I see the Thomas' scene touted as Best scene of The Mentalist by YT crowd. It is a wonderful scene no doubts. But for me this is the best scene of the show so far (I've completed 4 seasons so far)... Suicide is often demonized but I think it should be part of fundamental right.
First time I watched this scene, oh yes it hit me.. especially with him using his hypnosis to ease the passing.. that made it even more beautiful to me.. then a giggle... even when Steiner dies Jane looks sad.. then sits back to finish his tea.. nothing comes between jane and his tea, not even death.
What a powerful scene. I can't really support this kind of action, but I can certainly understand not wanting to suffer through a slow and painful process to an inevitable conclusion. This really hits you in the feels, and shows Jane in one of his most compassionate moments during the entirety of the show.
