One of the worst things about Nicholas Hoult's character is that he knows what's going to happen at the end of the meal... and STILL has to take pictures of the food even though it'd be completely pointless to do so, other than his desparate need to and (presumably) social media clout.

@MasterAndreRaven
@MasterAndreRaven 7 месяцев назад
It's either "she didn't need student loans to go" or "she was able to pay off her loans very quickly" -- and any way you resolve the second, it makes her the same class of person as the rest of the restaurant's typical clientele.

@MasterAndreRaven
@MasterAndreRaven 7 месяцев назад
@@gabrielherman8930 Maybe it's me. Maybe it's my experience with the American secondary education system. But "aid" rarely if ever means "free". Even with a grant and scholarships, the tuition for Brown would leave you with student debt *unless* you either (A) come from wealth, or (B) are very good at manipulating others / the system at work to your favor (making her an "eater", a "taker", as mentioned by the chef in the film).
@gabrielherman8930
@gabrielherman8930 7 месяцев назад
@@MasterAndreRaven secondary education refers to high school fyi. There’s a lot of truth to your characterization but it’s much less true at the more elite schools like Brown. Average debt burden at brown is like 10k after graduation and students earn like 70k on average a few years after graduation, or much more if they picked a lucrative major. Maybe not ideal but in any event, a brown grad having no student debt definitely doesn’t mean they’re super rich like the other patrons of this restaurant
@MasterAndreRaven
@MasterAndreRaven 7 месяцев назад
@@gabrielherman8930 You addressed the issue in your previous comment, buddy. It's an "elite" school. Why is that? Because a *certain kind of person* will be more likely to be admitted than the average applicant, whether through influence, wealth, or generational ties. The ones who would attend Brown without these things -- the ones who excelled through merit and drive, with a trifle of luck along the way -- would still have debt from such an education by that age (she looks to be no older than her mid-thirties at the very oldest). This implies that she is very much "someone born on third base," as it were.

And the resolution is one of my favourite 'character saves the day' moments in film. Erin is a very talented 'server', who gives their clients what they want. So she wins by giving the Chef what he wants: a chance to feel happy cooking again. And that's why she gets to live.

Emily... as someone who's worked front of house in a high-end establishment, you must have met some famous people. I've worked yuppie restaurants, smaller Italian pasta houses, golf courses, and even a club with live bands. I cooked for Tool, Bon Jovi, John Travolta, and Jonathon Banks. I've even smoked with Corrosion of Conformity. But the most memorable celebrity was Mindy Cohn in the late '80s. She was completely smashed, and wanted to meet the cooks. She then proceeds to corner me, planting a big wet one on me. It was the strangest night of my career... lol. 😋

From the original script: Lillian wasn't completely exaggerating when she said she put Chef on the map: He had another high end restaurant before Hawthorne, called Tantalus. Got 2 Michelin stars 2 years in, then closed up shop. Isn't heard from again until 3 years later, running a taco truck in Portland. He agreed to the interview only if he could keep his privacy, his own land, and it had to be by the water so he could source his own fish. It's established the movie star has a peanut allergy during the tour, and this turns out to be setup for the menu's eighth course, where Felicity is ordered to force feed him a dish completely comprised of peanuts so as to kill him through anaphylactic shock. Anne (wife of man who paid Margot to look like his daughter while j*cking him off) actually couldn't eat The Island as is due to a shellfish allergy. Hers was salmon. The broken emulsion gag escalates to where the servers literally waterboard Lillian with it. The restaurant has hidden cameras in the dining room, so even if Elsa missed something, it still got caught. The taco truck Chef was running was, according to him, the happiest he'd ever been, but Margot calls him out on it later, asking why he parked his truck at a Food Expo where he KNEW food critics were going to be, if he wanted to be left alone. Man's Folly was supposed to have more details about a woman chef's actual experience in the kitchen, from harassment to stereotypes. The women DO get bread with Man's Folly, and it IS as delicious as promised. You can even see Tyler chewing on bread when Chef comes up to confront him afterwards. Not only did Tyler bring Margot knowing she would die, he sincerely thought Chef was going to spare him. And even when called out on it, he STILL didn't apologize or take it back, because all he cared about was experiencing the menu. Them all coming to the kitchen to watch Tyler screw himself over wasn't originally in the script. They were just supposed to watch from the dining room. Margot makes another bid for her life before being ordered to go get the barrel. Which Chef appreciates enough to tell her so. Margot smiles upon seeing Tyler's hanging. Lillian realizes she's never going to get to write about this last experience, and THAT ends up being her real just desserts. Instead of dropping the ashes to set it all on fire, Chef originally drops a match. The last scene is of firefighters combing through the burnt wreckage, and the very last thing we see is the one photo of Chef as a young man, flipping a burger, but happy.

Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet. Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests. The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds" Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion. Memory - Self explanatory The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. It even has a hole for the bullet. Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs. Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that. Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.

Seriously, even now watching your reaction I got teary eyed for that cheeseburger scene.

"Who put that crab there?" "I didnt see any crab, sir." "Don't tell me, there were two crabs. They work in pairs. I went to Annapolis for Christ's sake."

This is one of my favorite movies. It's written and paced absolutely brilliantly, and the acting is top notch. Your Willy Wonka comparison was spot on and I thank you for saying out loud what my brain was trying to tell me.

I LOVED this movie ever since I saw the preview for it, but was definitely surprised on what it was going to be about. Definitely love the dark vibes from this, saw it with friends in Discord and definitely wish I had gone to see it in theaters

I never put together the parallel to 'Willy Wonka' when I saw this the first time. Erin is DEFINITELY Charlie.

I love the fact that the director is the same guy who did the Ali G movie. If you want a classic British comedy you should check it out, Ali's a local hero

The three dude-bros are the real Karens of the movie, and are far worse than Tyler, with their overblown sense of entitlement due to wealth which is a result of their illegal actions. Tyler is a straight up psychopath, so his actions are far more understandable, if no more forgivable. None of them deserved death, but I would have relished the public humiliation of the dude-bros even more than Tyler’s humiliation.

I'd like to think that Tyler cared enough to break up with his girlfriend so she didn't die since he knew it was coming and it wasn't just a "change of plans" that made her miss the trip. So I guess in a way, he actually loved and or cared about her? On the other hand, he was an a-hole for trying to doom a random stripper because he probably viewed her as less of a need in society. The person that created the meals in the movie, Chef Dominique Crenn, was the first female chef to receive three Michelin Stars in the US.

Wasn't it the girlfriend who broke up with him and that's what caused the change of plans?

I thought as well going in that it was some kinda cannibal movie, and slowly guests start disappearing and the remaining guests are distracted w/ other issues as they're fed the missing guests... OR like you said, Most Dangerous Game similarity would've been cool. I didn't expect Anya live at the end tho, i think she kinda escaped too easily, lol.

Tyler reminds me of a guy my ex brother in law pointed out to me one day. He said the guy was a genius but also very stupid. If there was something wrong with your car the guy could tell you exactly what it was & how to fix it but he couldn’t actually fix it himself.
