In which fantasy world would Antonelli even get close to Russel right now let alone beating him? Not only he is making big jumps between categories but also he hasn't even been crazy impressive in f2, and the jump between f2 and f1 is pretty big. Also how Verstappen would perform in a Mercedes is an uncertainty, he drove only for red bull his entire career, see what happened to Checo this season, he surely didn't suddenly forget how to drive, is just unable to find his footing in this car, drivers performance can oscillate massively from car to car. All things considered and since Hamilton is leaving, Russel is the only safe bet they have.

I feel for George. He spent 3 years at Williams while Mercedes were cleaning up and while Lando and Alex Albon, who he beat to the F2 title, were in more competitive cars. He finally gets his chance at Merceded as they lose competitiveness so has not really had chance to shine. However, his stand in for Lewis in 2020, beating Lewis in qualifying, and Spa this season show he's got it, but he does seem to fall back in races lately which is a huge question mark.

Imo the reason George always seems to fall back during the races is that his qualifying and race starts are far more impressive than we maybe give him credit for. If Merc can get Verstappen then they will make room for him, it’s just a question of who. Antonelli just has to be fast to be worth keeping, they’ll see him as their future after Verstappen leaves them. Russell is the one in trouble. He’s done well against Hamilton but he hasn’t ousted him like Leclerc did to Vettel. If Antonelli beats Russell then he’s finished, if Russsll beats Antonelli then it’s just what’s expected of him. Verstappen is just a better Russell, and that might just be because Verstappen has far more experience in a top F1 team but that’s a gap Russell can’t close. If mercedes a championship contender car next season, that will be the true test for Russel, up until now even without the mistakes he wouldn't have been able to achieve much other than a couple of wins as he had, if is mercedes is up there next seasons then we'll see if he is capable of fighting for a title or not.

@@juliovazquez8141They do, more so than you think. There is a reason why teams are unable to win the championship at times despite having the fastest car on average due to their misplaced faith ("vibe") in their driver choice. The biggest offender of recent memory is probably Ferrari, losing 2018 and 2008 despite having the fastest car on average due to being complacent with their driver choices. Williams does it too, notably in 1994 and 1991. Teams are eating up vibe almost as much as the casual audience do, blindly believeing a quality of a driver just because they have championship credentials or good history in junior formula. It's not completely their fault either, because there is no way of telling whether a driver is just all hype or is actually fast until another driver expose their true level in the same car. For every driver that warrants their hype like Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen, there is also a driver that got hyped way more than their actual ability like Damon Hill or Sebastian Vettel.

George Russell has consistently demonstrated that he is the future of Mercedes . In 2020, he immediately impressed by securing P2 in qualifying when he filled in for Mercedes, and he was on course to win the race before a pit stop error dashed his hopes. In 2021, he showcased his talent by securing P2 in the rain with Williams, a car far from the front of the grid. In 2022, he consistently finished in the top five until Silverstone and Singapore, outperforming Lewis Hamilton in their head-to-head battle. This year, he's continued to prove his worth, currently leading Hamilton 12-4 in qualifying head-to-heads. Additionally, his first full season with Mercedes saw him take his maiden win in Brazil, and he finished ahead of Hamilton in the championship standings. Russell's adaptability, consistency, and speed make him a formidable contender and a key asset for Mercedes in the future.

What a strange presentation of drivers for 2025 Merc team had in Italy (it looks like rumours were correct that George had 1+1 contract similar to Lewis, else why contract confirmation/driver presentation was needed). TP did not answer direct question about Andrea’s contract length, but stated that both drivers were team’s future. This is a pure PR BS, if both are team’s future then both are expected to represent the team at the start of new regulation cycle at least (but all the talk was about 2025). Toto was talking about transparency in contract negotiations, but this exact situation is not transparent by definition towards George (in terms of contract length). People forgot the very 1st media session Toto had once it was announced that Lewis was leaving for Ferrari - where he literally did not say a single firm word about George’s situation/role in the team (it looked like he mentioned George a couple of times once Mr Bradley Lord reminded about him). It was noticeable in comparison to press releases McLaren and Ferrari teams issued with their drivers’ contract renewals those days. When George himself was saying that no contract negotiations took place yet it is strange and alarming (how many days passed since Jan 31st 2024?), this is the very 1st thing the team and the driver should have discussed after Lewis’ news. In any case George is in the weakest position, at least Toto and Merc should be «open and transparent» from the very beginning, because from outside it looks like plans of George and Merc are no longer aligned right now (i.e. no dilemma) but doors to other teams keep closing…

It’s obvious that Toto wants to sign Max. They certainly had talked and one of the conditions for Max to even consider joining Mercedes would be having a guy like Perez in the other car. Max would never agree to have Russel as a teammate seeing how Russel beating LH in qualifying week in and week out. Thus if Kimi turns out just as quick as Russel next year, Max wouldn’t agree to team up with Kimi either. 2:04 "Regardless of your age, if you really have the speed and potential to be a world champion then you will adapt and perform in Formula 1 because the best drivers always do." I really wanted to point out that I think this is a logical fallacy. It probably has an exact name that I don't know but it seems to ignore the fact that we can only know about the drivers that were put in the pressure cooker and became world champions, but that doesn't mean we know anything about those that had the same potential yet never reached a similar level of success. Maybe all of those that entered f1 with that kind of talent have managed to express it already or maybe it's the opposite, I'm just trying to say that we probably don't know. What I agree with is that there's definitely a type of person or driver essentially like Max for whom it's best to just give them the best opportunities as soon as possible in order to maximise their potential.

I don't think I'd want Verstappen if I were Toto. Whether or not it's Max's fault or his teammates never seem to perform long term against him. If you want to have a 2 prong, 2 cars, 2 drivers at the front team is Max the best driver to have? I don't think so. Russell plays nice with teammates and has matured massively to operate under pressure, make winning strategy calls from the car, and hold his own against the statistically speaking winningest driver of all time. Introducing Max is sort of like opening an unmarked box. It could be Prometheus gifting you fire, or Pandora unleashing chaos.

Any team will focus on their own drivers, but at the same time, any team who has a chance to sign an absolute top driver, they will take it, they need to if they take themselves seriously. Max is such a driver, same for Lewis and Alonso, although those two are getting old and the value of signing them is getting less because of the limited years they have left in them. I don't see any other drivers on the grid that are a no brainer to sign. Add to that the frustration of Toto that you mentioned at the beginning of the video of missing out on Verstappen early in his career, for sure Mercedes is going to sign Verstappen if the opportunity is there.

@@navdeepsingh3508 I would argue he is, or atleast not totally right. This driver championship isn't a real fight, thats something Aldas likes to make clear at every occasion when its about the question whether mclaren should use Oscar as Lando's wingman. You can talk alot about Lando's starts this season, however there are two things I think are missed by Aldas: 1. Lando was a good, reliable starter in the past seasons and right now has to always remember, when he crashes out of the race its likely the already big mountain he has to climb to even mount a championship challenge this year is doubling in size - Oscar doesn't have this problem/thought in the back of his mind on lap one, he wants to make sure he is not put into the wingman role of Lando, so is naturally going that little more aggressive than Lando. This edge made the difference in italy for example. 2. Mclaren admitted that especially in hungry their settings for the engine and the clutch were not ideal, causing wheelspin in second gear - mind you, both mclaren weren't great of the line in that race. It very well may be that Oscar managed to do a better job at working with a tricky car to start but that doesn't make a driver like Lando from "championship material" to "good midfielder only" - at least in my eyes. Combine this two and I think its harsh to say after half a dozen races (with a racewinning car) with quite a few mismanagement errors on mclaren side makes Lando not championship-material. When driving against Max who can work with this kind of lead in a still very decent car (not the quickest on most occasions right now, but not that far off) you have to be absolutely perfect nearly every time to even a have chance on surmounting this kind of lead. Mclarens slow start to the season plays a huge role in this point deficit Besides, yes, Oscar has been impressive considering he is in his second season, however Norris still beats him far more often than not in qualifying and race pace wise its either extremely close or he is ahead by a bit. Good example is Zandvoort: Lando managed to pass Max while Oscar got stuck behind the Ferraris and Mercedes, leading to Oscar finishing 30 seconds or more behind his teammate. Race pace is hard to judge at the moment as clean air makes a huge difference and overtaking got so difficult again sadly. When team mates are so close as Lando and Oscar are its hard to distinguish a small edge by Lando over Oscar (or vice versa, however I would expect Lando to have a small edge - something "the race" agress with me) Saying that Oscar is the outright better driver than Lando while they are both in quite different situations in this current season (one having a chance on the title, the other clearly being out of it) based on this season only is just an emotional, very coloured picture for me. The next season will be a real test to compare both. Besides, if Oscar had done a better job at the start of the season he could have been at Lando's place instead. I could say based on that he is "not championship material" but that would be equally baseless like Aldas statement about Lando in my eyes.

The George Russell problem is simple. He's a good driver but he's not great like Max / Lewis. If '26 Merc is as dominant as '14 Merc, then sure George could win the title. But George won't be able to stay 62 points clear on WDC standings with the car that Red Bull currently have. Toto want Kimi to be the next Max but for that, he would have to tolerate Kimi being '16 - '19 Max too and need a driver to win the title in the meantime even if Merc cars aren't the outright fastest. For Toto, that driver would ideally be Max.

I really cannot fathom the desire of certain team bosses to have another star driver in their lineup when they already have a more than able winner on board. George Russell has clearly shown he can fly the Mercedes flag so why the hankering for Max Verstappen and the potential headache having two Verstappens to contend with, by whom I mean pere et fil!! If Kimi Antonelli were to come good then a Russell-Antonelli pairing would be more than adequate to secure titles IMHO. I further offer as rationale, the argument of McLaren in 1988 and the craving on the part of Ron Dennis to sign Ayrton Senna. In Alain Prost, McLaren already had a proven winner and champion. Why upset the apple cart? Why destroy the calm within the team? Alain Prost would have easily delivered titles from 1988 through 1991 and quite possibly 1993 too. We all know what happened in the Prost-Senna era at McLaren. Peter Brook made a study of the outcome of each season were the points system the same as the current one and it is very clear Alain Prost would have won in 1988 and 1989 ( 32:23 - 32:45 of ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4_yDVVutU38.htmlsi=-ipIYnaSj71Px8Mh ) and especially in the absence of Senna. While history recorded Senna won in 1990 and 1991, Alain Prost would have won in a McLaren in those years too. Instead the calm atmosphere of the team was shattered, friendships undermined, even damaged. And for what?
