The saddest part to me about Tyr and Fenrir is that in the version I've heard the two of them were very close friends in a man's best friend kind of way. I think that just makes it all the more tragic that Tyr had to betray Fenrir.
@JonSolo
@JonSolo Год назад
their relationship is never described in the actual texts, but it's easy to imagine that Tyr being the only one who fed Fenrir led to them developing a special bond

@@JonSolo Hey Jon Solo, I really really like this video! However, there was one theory that I did run into that has me all sorts of confused, and I can't seem to find it's source anywhere. It states that Hodur, the Aesir God of Darkness and Winter, is considered to be the same god as Ullr, the Aesir God of Winter and the Hunt and husband to Skadi. Is there anyway you could explain this to me, and help me find the source of that Theory so I can get a better look at it? My reason is that I'm writing a Fanfiction on Norse Mythology to give Hodur some more love, and his theory, while crazy, is something I could use if I get more information and evidence on it.

I’m pretty sad that Tyr gets almost nothing in media in general. In Marvel he’s a blink and you miss him who barely appears (comic and movie wise from what I’ve read) and in God of War I’m interested in where they go with him, perhaps he will gain more of a warriors spirit and be involved in a fight with Atreus and Fenrir which will result in his hand being lost.
@Fincarn5
@Fincarn5 Год назад
Actually depends on where you look, I have found Tyr is one of the most respected gods in other media. As far as video games goes in Warcraft lore he is a "Watcher" (for practical purposes a demigod) that lost one hand figthing a great evil. While within his powers to restore his hand, he chose to wear a prostetic made of silver, to teach the then nacent human civilization the value of self sacrifice in pursuit of justice. It's in his honor that the human order of paladins is named the Knights of the silver hand. Meanwhile in Dungeons and Dragons he is a greater deity (someone in the tiear as Odin), generally asociated with the Lawful Good alignment and along with Torm (a champion of Tyr that ascended to godhood) and Ilmanter (the god of martyrs) they form the triad. One of the most important divine alliances on the side of good.

The only way Týrs' interest as a character is undercut by Kratos is because we've been with Kratos for 18 years. That made it easy for the writers to seamlessly and subtly combine Kratos' story with the actual mythical Týr.

Northernwest Semitic dialect languages, the meaning of "El" is "the god" is reserved primarily for the King god of any given pantheon. Most people confuse it with the Hebrew word "el" which means "god", "diety" and "divine." Interesting note is that in Koine Greek, it also has two words that distinctly differ theos "god", "diety" or "divine" from Ho-Theos/Theon "the god" or in English "God." It's also where the Muslims get their word Allah ("the God") from as they also speak a Northwest Semitic dialect, along with the Amorite/Urgurits, Syrian/Arameans, Akkadians, Canaanites/Phoenicians and Assyrians/Chaldeans.

Thanks as always, Jon; I'd forgotten a lot of this and your storytelling is engaging! I've been meaning to ask, what are your thoughts on Sturlusson's introduction to his text? I think, even in translations, it reads as though Sturlusson just made it up as he went along, and not as a recording of the myths that followed. I'm guessing he created that part as a sort of insurance, as the times they were a-changin' and his whole political and religious system had been upended.

If Tyr’s name means god then isn’t it possible he was once simply called god and the story was just given to Oden once all the gods were given names with time? I’d imagine the story probably was kept simple intentionally. Personally I see their similar stories too obvious to ignore. Both are wise and brave and lose parts of their body and both die from a wolf when the world ends. Sounds too symbolic and perhaps those concepts are what it lost during end times? I always imagined this final battle is more symbolic of the fall of mankind rather then the fall of the gods.

I enjoyed GoW as much as everyone else but I think it would be more substantial if you included some ideas from AC valhalla as that came out 2 years ago and their recent ragnarok dlc

Are you Norse? My family hails from Iceland but I'm second generation here in America. I love the stories of the heimskringla as well. Pretty crazy to think what those Norse kings went through
