In greek mythology you shouldnt read it as literal truth but more as figure of speech, where for example relationship between gods could be an tableau of natural phenomenons. What comes to gods and goddes and their relations to mortals, even thought some of the stories could present for example a king as actual god, but usually high priests would impersonate or be embodiment in holy rituals as Zeus or another gods whom he was devoted himself and would have intercourse with who ever basically. There also were many temples and priesthoods so it's not probably that it was one man breeding all sons of one god because of the timeline itself the distance in time of events and mortality of men. To get in this kinda relation was seen as great honour to women if they had child in that kinda relationship with so high nobility and they usually were honoured by this rather than be victim etc. High priests of Zeus for example would of course not be married to with high priestests of Hera etc so they would not actually be cheating on eachother or anybody, but if the one being on relation with them start flexing that he had intercourse with god and started to have godcomplex themselves and requiring worship to him or her that was usually what bringed trouble to them and was revenged by religious system of that time. Like if you would claimed in middle ages that you are true god, goddes or mother of god etc you would be soon burned in fire as heretic. Also for example if you would believe that Iesus would be historical figure, he could not have been born from virgin mother and in bible too it's said that he actually had sexual intercourse with "angel", in this case too it was probably an intercourse with either some high member of judaist priest, rabbi etc or just Joseph and written later as son of god.
@ledhiz
@ledhiz 4 года назад
@ If you are hating on Zeus without even knowing anything about it I think it's even worse, or not having a patience to read couple rows of text. But for example in Ilias and Odysseus Zeus is mostly described or presented as wise and righteous ruler and defender of justice, morals and most mortals. Only hating on him because he has many sexual partners in myth is fucking stupid because he was symbolistic personification of natural forces rather thunder and lightning, so in most cases it was not like married man would be having an affair away from his wife, but for example high priest as embodiment of him having some sexual ritual with another partner. Also judaist-christians have been black painting and distorting the myths so it's hard to know the truth behind all these stories.
@terra_the_nightingale135
@terra_the_nightingale135 4 года назад
ledhiz as someone who actually read your comment I do appreciate it. The Gods are “forced of nature” basically and act as their counterparts. Thing is that doesn’t make them any better. Makes them horrible people except... they’re not people. They’re Gods. In their view, there wouldn’t be a moral compass for them as they don’t follow the same rules or even follow the same plan of existence. Their actions still suck though but the judgement of them is something... difficult really. Also with the many different versions. Hades can be seen as the most neutral God but no saint, no pun intended with his whole death thing.

Every gods are fucked in the head, not just Hera. Also, Hera's depictions differs depending on the cities and regions. The Athen and Thebes depicted her negatively since they were extremely misogynistic (hence the majority of the myths about her came from them) . In other regions like Sparta and Samos, she was seen in a positive light.

The story of Hera just accentuates the problems with the concept of "virginity". Because society put that "virtue" on such a high pedestal, regardless of the circumstances, she was forced into a situation that was dangerous for her, and everyone around her. If her autonomy was respected above her virginity she would have never been forced into a such a toxic relationship.
@azidahaka8543
@azidahaka8543 Год назад
Imo virginity should always be both sided, you can't expect to be a lusty Playboy and then suddenly get a faithful, virgin, chaste wife. Feel bad for Hera, but not much because she herself isn't much better than Zeus in terms of cruelty.

Hera is interesting. I think it’s unfortunate that her most well known myths are her rage induced ones. They’re entertaining, sure, but I love it when are actually helps. One of my favorites is that when Eros falls in love with Psyche, he begs that she be given immortality to stay with him or that his own immortality be struck down so he can be with her in the Underworld. Hera turns to Zeus and reminds him that he’s made other mortals immortal, always against her desires. “This time, I wish it.” So Zeus agrees

Jon, your defense of Hera is great. She was a goddess of fidelity in a world of horn-dogs. She is vilified for rebelling (albeit violently) against the vow-ignoring faithless norms of the times (and, ironically these times). Her Roman counterpart - Juno - is much more of a revered mother figure than a mad avenging goddess. Consider the legions of moms, brides, & cheated-on wives & husbands who prayed to her. She represented order in a world of sex-inspired chaos. Hera may not have been cool and was often a drag, but she represented a security and bond that Grecian society felt it needed in the big picture.

yes! most of greek myths reflect society’s views back then. Hera’s villianization just proves the misogyny that was prevalent at the time. she was villianized for being rightfully angry at Zeus for cheating. most villians in these myths seem to be women, the female deities always seem to be lesser than or have atleast on male counterpart that is stronger than them.

I was always puzzled by Hera considering her negative portrayal in the myths, however she was one of the most widely worshiped of the Greek Divines, so the real life people loved her. Then one day I stumbled upon a playlist where someone attributed popular songs to the various Olympians. It was rubbish, so I devised my own. The song that seemed to fit Hera actually changed my view of her, Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. If you doubt me, then listen to the song while thinking of Hera and you might see it too.
