Mimir sounded like history teacher in the god of war game which really made learning about the lore super fun and I hope we get more of that in the next game.
@@deranged_miyeon_stan they were referring to God of War: Ragnarok. The sequel to this game titled “God of War” so following naming convention without other information, it’d be God of War 2, too
"Mimir of the Bifrost Teats", I genuinely laughed at this moment. Wasn't expecting this at all when I played. GoW is just so grim most of the time, this comic relief was welcome. When I sailed on this tiny boat with Boy and Mimir, I'd always wait for him to finish his stories before docking.
To be honest, Mimir is half the reason I love God of War 4. I loved listening to his story’s while traveling by boat. Yes his role in GOW4 is when I first heard of him.
you should check out the audiobook of the first game. it's narrated by the actor who plays Mimir! He also impersonates the other characters, which is pretty funny
Mimir, in the god of war lore, is a fae from Celtic mythology and changed his name when he got to Midgard. He was a "jester" to a "king". It's actually an incredibly deep character arc and he seems to have a lot of potential in the future of the series
I'm taking a note of this! I couldn't find anything about his identity pre-god of war and didn't feel confident enough to make assumptions and tie him to other mythology, but between his accent and the bit of his backstory we know him being a Celtic god would make sense!
@@JonSolo if you pay attention to the stories he tells while you're traveling the realms be touches on it a little bit, he also talks more about the person he was in the new game and how he wants to change, with how the game ends it would be easy to integrate Celtic mythology especially with some of the details of the Tuath Dé Danann, it would líne up perfectly. But i don't want to spoil any details for anyone.
@@TarossBlackburn yes, my initial comment was months before the game came out and I'm not trying to spoil any details of the game for anybody so that's why i skimmed over that part.
Want a challenge, Mr. Solo? Thoth, the God of writing, magic medicine, and knowledge. He was vastly important, but few myths still exist concerning him.
Still more is known about Thoth than seems to be known about Ma'at, the Egyptian goddess of law and justice. Many of the myths don't even mention that it's her feather that the heart is weighed against in judgment after death.
@@fabrisseterbrugghe8567 you know, now that you mention it, that is a bit disturbing that there's not much on her. I never noticed that before. Thank you.
@@beckyb1813 I study history and mythology. Anubis and Thoth are a couple of my absolute favorites. Never heard about the Kane Chronicles. I'll have to check it out, thanks. Btw, get Joseph Campbell's Encyclopedia of the Gods. It's pricey, but it points to so many resources
This might sound crazy but what if the water in Mimir's well is actually sap from Yggdrassil. The tree is already associated with wisdom and the well is found at a root of the tree, so maybe the well was a purification system of sorts
I'd love to see a general "Here's how you got wisdom in ancient times" episode. Brief coverage of this well, the salmon of wisdom in the Matters of Ireland and Britain, the various foods of the gods, the tree of knowledge in the Abrahamic books... It would make for a long episode, but it could be fun to see all the links.
My history class is doing a Greek Mythology project, and i'm going to send my friend a bunch of your videos to help her (Just so you know, Im doing mine on Hekate)

Mimir is my favorite character in both GOW and GOWR so learning about the actual mythology of him is very interesting, this video is really good with explaining things in an easy way which is nice
Mimir also appears in the danish comics and cartoon movie based on the comics - Valhalla. The comics are written and drawn by Peter Madsen. Fun fact: In the german version of the cartoon movie, Christopher Lee voices Odin. Fun fact 2: There's a brand of bottled water in Denmark called "Mimers brønd" - "Mimir's Well".
Mimir reminds me of the story of "all wise" who is a dwarf tricked by thor when he asked him the names of several different things through the night until the sun rises and turns the dwarf to stone. Haven't gotten through the ads yet so John might bring it up, but it really messed with me when I heard of him in god of war and looked him up
"Both sides suffered tremendous losses... and for many of us, quiet frankly, war was simply no fun anymore, but a rather senseless waste of precious life." - Mimir
What I really loved was the fact that you referd to the "God Of War" and Vallhalla Rising" mythos'. Both of those struck a chord of interest to learn more about norse mythology. Your channels unique perspective on truth gave me a push to read both the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda.
I had heard of Mimir elsewhere but didn't really understand him til I met him in God of War (very not my type of game btw but I just had to because it was so beautiful). I honestly spent a long time wandering Jormungander's lake listening to Mimir's stories because he would stop when you docked and sometimes it was really hard to get him to repeat previous tales. I really adore him from God of War.
I also read that after Mimir was beheaded Odin placed the head in that well and it brought Mimir's head back to life just so he could continue spreading his knowledge with being infused with the well. So he basically became an oracle of the Norse
In god of war they actually hint that minor is a celtic fae or fairy. This is hinted by his Scottish accent and even a bit of dialogue in the game between him kratos and atreus.
Haha, well, the reason I’m watching Jon solo is because I have to make a mythology project that doesn’t include Greek mythology. If Jon can, make more videos on Norse, Filipino, Japanese, African, or any other myths
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. I HAD NO CLUE WHO MIMIR WAS ON GOW. I was too lazy to research but I'm grateful for all your hard work on this and every other video actually. We love you Jon.
It still amazes me how you haven't hit a million yet. I've been a watcher for at least 2 years now I think and I would binge listen and watch your videos, even if they were ones I had seen several times already. It's amazing seeing you branch out to things like mythology and astrology. I'm super excited to see where things are going to continue to go.

"The Vanir felt deceived Höne was a fool without Mímir at his side Höne could not rule In a fit of violent rage Mímir's blood was shed and to Odin's court they sent Mímir's severed head" - Amon Amarth, "War of the Gods"
As someone who played assassins creed valhalla and god of war 4 multiple times, i love the references, also, with odin wanting to avoid his death and all that is basically spot on, your quick explanation of assassins creed valhallas odin reasoning is spot on right on the nail
I have been reading and doing some small research about different mythos, and it strike me to see so many common things and they are all tide to the anonaki somehow. what surprises me the most is all mythos are somehow a twisted version of stories found in the Ibrahimic monotheistic religion.
In New Zealand we had a tv program called the almighty Johnsons & they were Norse gods in the modern world. It started my interest into norse mythology.
I´m from Sweden and as a kid we had a webpage called MimersBrunn that was a page where people uploaded schoolprojects so that others could copy it. Good old times.
As a teacher, I hate sites like that...also students are not very bright if they think teachers don’t know how to use the Internet to search for things. Sorry, venting as it never seems to get through to my students in real-time.
@@charlesedwards2856 This was about 17 years ago tho, most people still had the dial-up 56k modem atleast here in sweden so it hadnt yet become what it is now :)
I could be wrong, but I think I heard of a different death for Mimir. He stopped to talk with some dwarves who were so impressed by his wisdom, they killed him and stuffed his dismembered body inside of a barrel of mead. When others came to find him, the dwarves lied and said that he spoke so much he literally choked on his words. They then sold the mead of wisdom to Odin, who didn't really bother asking where they got it from.
That is not mimir. That is a being that was made of the spit of the vanir and asir, who would go to spread almost unlimited knowledge to others throughout the nine realms. Then the dwarves killed him and mixed his blood into honey to make mead. Also, a giant stole the mead from the dwarves and had his daughter to guard it. Later, Odin found out and slept with the giant's daughter 3 days in a row and tricked her into letting him have some of the mead. Instead of having a little bit, he stole all of it and placed it into three giant pots in asguard.
So many more people need to see your content its great, its informative, its entertaining, and you actually learn while you watch. the stories and mythology are interesting, and as far as i know your research is accurate. 👍👍👍
I was super obsessed with the how to train your dragon books in like 4th grade on. So I got into norse mythology and even went to Norway. I named a litter of kittens after it too lol
I had to come back and re-watch this because I got the magnus chase series for Christmas and I just met Mimir. I wanted to refresh myself before i move on.
From what I've heard of the origin stories the reason they killed mimir was because they found out the other guy was just basically a puppet that mimir controlled and when he was away hornier was a puppet on repeat.
What's cool about in video ads is it makes me think is this content really worth me waiting through the ad to watch. And the answer is usually Heck No!
Something popped into my head this morning. Not sure if it really is a nursery rhyme or where it came from but "Its It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring..." Been storming all week down here and I started singing that when I looked out the window preparing myself mentally for the task of taking children to school in this chaos and it hit me that I havent seen that one on here yet. I dont think I have watched all the videos here, but I have come close. So anyways, sorry, not really relevent to video above but wanted to say it before I forgot. There is another one that starts with, "rain rain, go away, come again some other day,...." but the only version I remember was a mockery version that we did as kids. Akin to "trick or treat, smell my feet,". Normally I would Google when I have questions or curiosity but that would spoil the fun.
Plus It's nice that he's also a crossed over with Puck from celtic myth. Really crossing all the cultural lines these games, despite their basic origins.
Mimir Had a Well with Roks who were High In Sodium/Minerals, the Possibility of Eating a Lot of Mushrooms, and the Luck of Being Able to Have High quantities of Mead and Vasodilatators Herbs..
