+JafuetTheSame My copy is the one Self Made Hero put out, which I believe has the original coloring. I don't think I've ever seen the recolored version actually. I'm usually all about the original look but sometimes it works out for the better. I go back and forth on some of the recoloring on Sandman.

I've read Universal War One, but not Worlds of Aldebaran. Looks like it's been out of print here in the states for a while. I read UWO when Marvel published in under its Soleil line. I enjoyed the story and I thought the art was wonderful. I bought the hardcover Titan put out this year so I could revisit it.

For our purposes, we're just trying to introduce the concept of international comics that aren't manga to Americans. You're correct of course, the creators are Latin Americans. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but Metabarons was originally published in France and sold very very well there so doesn't that make it a French comic? Daytripper was created by Brazillians, but it was published here in the states. Sandman was written by a Brit, but it was published here in the states. Preacher was written by an Irishman, but it was published here in the states. These are all American comics. Of course, I could be wrong about its first publication, but everything I can find says it was first published in France. As for "commercial North American "super heroes," what does that have to do with anything?

Let me explain my point. During those times (late 1970s), most of the comics you mention were created by authors living under and opossing right-wing dictatorships. Chilean and Argentine dictatorships were specially hard from the ideological and religeous/clerical point of view, and forbade the publishing of these topics. Many of the authors had center-left or leftist political views, some of them atheist, and as result, there were not publishing possibilities in latin america. This was not a legal thing: in those years, you could be killed for that. For example, Oesterheld (the argentine guionist of El Eternauta, a classic scifi comic in the late 50s) was a writer, and during the 70s his leftist thinking turned him and his daughters to join into the Montoneros guerrilla movement. So he had to use european contacts in Italy to publish his latests works, and do so until he was turned in a desaparecido by the argentine military junta death squads. (The military said that you were Missing, a way to deny that they had killed you, and deny responsability. They killed lots of intellectuals). His works was argentine, not italian, but first published and first translated in Italy. Italy was just a channel to legally publish. Jodorowski was exiled into France during the chilean Pinochetist dictatorship, and Gimenez worked from Spain during the time, also escaping from the Videla dictatorship in Argentina. They published under french record for that reason. My thinking is that these comic authors put their lives in what they were doing, creating their art as a specific way to culturally fight against fascist dictatorships of their time. They were not works to be seen a simply enjoyment as american heros comic, or japanese manga. They were expressing several topics, some philosophical, some methaphorical, and important for them. Some of this topics are even present in Los Metabarones. Think about a group of warrior races which, in some point, are mere slaves of violence, too. Who would you think they represent? You do a great work introducing american readers to their work, and I think you could bring these context to them too. Also you could read El Eternauta (the eternaut). Is the protocomic of his age.

There are an excellent book by José Sasturain, an argentine director but also an avid comic enthusiast. Fortunately, he produced an excellent series of documentals called "Continuará" all of theme can be seen in youtube.. These were made by Canal Encuentro (a cultural TV channel in Argentina), and are in spanish, but you could see the art, drawings, etc. These includes works about the subject you are interest include: /watch?v=_NtRt3eg_do (Argentine comic in foreign countries) Mort Cinder from Alberto Brescia /watch?v=oM_jteo_TC8, or Oesterheld, Solano López, and The Eternaut /watch?v=nwJJw1OA6DE The Ethernaut, the sequels: /watch?v=cwODKJb35hg Las caras de Brescia (other works of brescia) /watch?v=FoccklABu-o José Luis Salinas and the pulp adventures: /watch?v=FJjNW0Zfzq8 Ricardo Barreiro sci fi and adventures (he worked in europe during the dictatorship) /watch?v=xBfCKaISzIk Arturo del Castillo cowboys stories: /watch?v=wC4P1BHWuTg There is also another historic adventures comic, Nippur de Lagash, i don't remember the author now, but was drawed by Luciano Olivera. And many more

Alpha Rookie I think you just put too much stock into Les Humanoids being a French company and not to the background of the creators.

It's something that's been brought up to me before. My original intention was just to try to get people who wouldn't even consider anything outside American mainstream comics to give "European" comics a shot, but I totally understand your point. Down the line, I'd really like to feature some Argentinian stuff like Eternaut or Alack Sinner. My experience with Latin American comics is admittedly limited, but I'd love to hear suggestions. Yes. Vinland Saga is a viking book and Vagabond is a Samurai book I believe. Haven't read either.

Alpha Rookie vagabond is the better of the two in my opinion , it's also about the life of the greatest samurai Miyamoto Musashi, it's fictionalized. but it adds a greater depth to it you have a deaf samurai and he is awesome

Vagabond has stood out because of it's artwork. It looks pretty amazing. I have some issues with manga that relate to the "sameyness" criticisms I have for mainstream house styles, but there are books that stand out. I was big on Lone Wolf and Cub and I know I tend to go through binge phases. Eventually I'll cycle back to a samurai phase and re watch a ton of movies, as well as check out stuff like vagabond.

+gonen32 1) It's comparable to the slimmer Marvel omnibi in its...girth. 2) The substance is there. Jodorowsky never does anything that doesn't mean anything. So yes it is violent and sexual but so is Greek myth, and myth is the lens in which it should be viewed if you're looking for meaning. No it's not Millar because I don't think it's trying to be edgy. It does have very broad characters however and they are not necessarily like able or relatable. Again...look at mythical stories. 3) Yes. You'll have no problem following the story. 4) No you don't have to read Incal. Just jump right in.

+JafuetTheSame Actually we added those black bars. Those books aren't censored at all except for Humanoids deciding to shrink wrap the books themselves. I think you would be surprised by the level of explicit content in American comics. Maybe not in the mainstream superhero stuff, but everything else is fair game.

Pretty interesting he was given complete freedom to layout the comic the way he saw fit. That's the cool thing about Jodorowsky, he goes after people he likes and trusts them and their creativity to produce amazing things without forcing them onto his own vision. Truly collaborative work.
