I lived in Beppu-shi (Kamegawa) 30 years ago so catching of few glimpses of it in this vid was very nostalgic. Strange to think that Beppu-shi now has a high concentration of foreigners. I lived there in the pre-Internet days and before Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University was built. In those days, we foreigners were still pretty much the oddity. Even I would stop and stare if when the occasional foreign tourist would walk down my street. "Who's that? Do I know them? What are they doing here? Are they lost?"

So looks like a Spirited Away town. Really cool to see all the steam and onsen water coming up from the ground. I can only imagine the sulfur smell was a bit much lol.

Many onsens in Beppu don't have sulfur in them. They might have some kinds of smell according to their components but not at all obnoxious. Kannawa onsen has high salinity and it makes the food salty and tasty when onsen-steamed. There's an onsen source for drinking at the restaurant, JIGOKU-MUSHI-KOBO, the onsen tastes like clear soup with umami. ❤️ from Beppu 🇯🇵😊

Dogens videos are funny but also when he drops an informative one its so amazingly detailed that's why I enjoy watching his videos :D Beppus university is actually a partner of my university here in Germany. When I was looking it up my first thoughts were well that's not Tokyo but Tokyo is definitely not Beppu which is so unique and the campus + the things they offer in the university are amazing. I hope I get chosen for the semester abroad program here so I can go to Beppu 😊

I absolutely love Beppu, it's such a great town to live in. I remember when I visited Kannawa on a cold rainy day, that river of onsen water was producing so much steam, it looked so cool! I'm one of those foreigners at APU, that's just funny.

What an interesting town! Dogen is actually nice lol he seems so savage everytime I've seen him on Twitter! I hope we can get a deeper look in that onsen restaurant! Seems interesting since I tought onsen wasn't the most appealing smell. Nice vid as always Norm!

Wow Beppu is truly charming....kind of gave me Ghibli vibes! I think the music soundtrack you added in the background helped too :) Loved the general landscape of the city & all the little streets/laneways where the steam shoots out from any (& every) orifice! looks like it was a fun day! My dad and I recently went for a walk by the waterfront in my hometown and we found out there was an Arboretum on the beach dedicated to palm trees and cycads. We found a bunch that looked like bamboo, but with fronds instead of bamboo leaves, and one tree (i think it was a tree. it was unclear since i didn't remember to look at the label for it) where the trunk was like 5 feet tall, and the fronds were like 15 feet tall. it's my new favorite tree(or cycad).

I am putting down Beppu as a place to go for my next journey to Japan! Starting a year long course in a couple of weeks and, among the subject I could choose, there was a Beginner course in Japanese (4 hours a week). After that I think I truly will have to go back to Japan for a trip to solidify what I will have learned. I hope in 3/4 years to build up not only on the Japanese but on the translation skills (Italian/English) which form the core of the course, possibly do a CELTA course and gain experience there too, take up Irish citizenship and see if I can find a teaching spot in, possibly rural, Japan. Its a bit of a 'long term' plan and things might change, who knows. Anyhow, Beppu looks great! Thanks for the always interesting content!

@@TokyoLens I think there are places where people run pipes of steam through the house, and let the steam out outside, but probably not in Beppu. Beppu is pretty warm place and there's little need for heat other than few months in winter, and for most of the year such a heating system would make house unlivable with too much heat.

The smell of sulfur may put people off, but they are believed to be good for high blood pressure. Bath drawn with water that is rich in carbonates is said to be good for skin conditions. The cumulative effective of soaking in various baths, one another the other can be an unforgettable experience.

Wait, you went to Beppu and DIDN'T enjoy an onsen bath??? THIS is a major fail that must be corrected. LOL. I always head over to Odaiba when I visit Japan to enjoy the baths at the Oedo Onsen Monogatari. Makes the body feel so damn good!
