You forgot to add the part where Orym asks Laudna why she is so happy all the time and she retorts with “the worst thing that could happen to me already has.” That was a profound moment that took me aback when I heard it.
A therapist once told me "the hardest part of your life, you've already gotten through". Now, he happened to be wrong about that, but it still stuck with me in a positive way.
I remember when Pate was introduced, I saw someone say something like "Imagine if Laudna was one of the corpses on The Sun Tree, that'd be wild." and now we have this amazing reveal.
Also makes it fun that Laudna is then the first character from a different campaign to be featured in Legends of Vox Machina (assuming that you don't include the Half Orc and Tiefling on the cover of Tusk Love).
I was watching Vox Machina series with my son, and when I saw the half rat escape the acid pit, I yelled, "Paté!" Little did we realize what was to come.
@@gennabella Wether or not the son is old enough is entirely up to Dan. They are watching the show with their son. Together. If any questions arise, I'm sure Dan's going to answer them. It is fine. Keep being an awesome parent, Dan. We need more Critters in this world. Don't forget to love each other.
@@ThorsShadow I watched all the horror movies of the 90s with my older brother when I was like 5. Even disney movies have spooky monsters and violence. We can't be cloistered forever.
I saw somebody say it, and I feel like it's worth re-iterating. This type of backstory could be generalized to any fantasy horror undead thing where she was brought back in some other Gothic fantasy city and everything else was the exact same and it would've still been a very good, intricate backstory that would be not that far from the norm. But her decision to make it based on the Briarwoods and what they did was solely a love letter to her friends at the table and all the critters out there, and it just makes it that much more awesome to us
It also adds a lot to the continuity of Exandria. Bringing back characters from C1 makes it feel like a whole world, compared to C2 were they almost never talked about anyone from C1
@@bestofcriticalrole I get why. They wanted C2 to be accessible to new watchers without having to watch 500 hours of content first. Now that they have TLoVM, they can have a bit more connection to those characters & events.
I guessed this on a whim in a conversation with my gf. Later on, she saw this episode live and told me “you were right.” I didn’t know what I was right about, and she wouldn’t spoil it for me. When I finally got to watch it, it did break me. I had to cry, couldn’t shake it. The way she described it from a first-person perspective was so nonchalant as if she was over it, but knowing the story behind it from watching Campaign 1 and TLoVM and still putting a new angle to that aspect of the story just hit my core. Anyone who says Marisha sucks probably doesn’t realize how great of an actor she is. This scene proved beyond a shadow of a doubt her prowess, imho.
This makes me wonder, if Keyleth would recognise Laudna if they ever met.. Laudna doesn’t age, so she’ll look the same as she was when she was hung.. I’m only saying Keyleth because she’s the one who recognises the corpses to represent them, and she’s the one who kept staring at the corpses in the animated series..
While my personal favourite this campaign is Fearne, Laudna was always a close second, but this may have tipped her above the chaotic stupid grandma - there are just so many layers of flavour to Laudna that Marisha has managed to include in this poor woman that one cant help but stand back and admire the artistry at work
@@Michael-bn1oi I'll be honest, I disliked Marisha from way back in campaign 1 with how inconsistent she was. She spent an entire game night saying how cruel the group was to risk people in a war - and this occurred moments after she ordered a fae creature to kill itself by walking into the orb of death... I switched off with her then and there. But this campaign she has 100% won me back!
Marisha herself said that wasn’t true on what of the “four-sided dive” convos. I think it was with Aabria, Ashley, Marisha, and Laura. It’s a good idea, but she didn’t actually think of that when she came up with the names!
i saw this in theatres. everyone lost their everloving shit as one by one we realized. the “oh shit”s “fuuuuuck”s and “holy shit”s just slowly spread across the room.
I was actually just talking about this with some friends earlier - I hadn't realized before, but I'd interpreted that whole dialogue as having implied that she was one of the small children. But I suppose it does make more sense for her to be the young woman - she probably hasn't aged since her revival, so it wouldn't make sense for her to be a kid.
@Chadahoochi were that the case she probably would have mentioned the antlers that were nailed to her fucking head, also how her hair changed from a ginger to black with the white streak
What and may I say this as politely as possible IN THE FUCK is with these story lines being so beautifully strung together GOD FUCKING DAMN YOU CRITICAL ROLE!!!!!!😍
@@criticallol3039 literally like wasn't it clear they used a child? Laudna didn't grow up after dying lmfao I even heard a theory she was used for Vax, but *Pyke?*
Matt uses a characters backstory to instill a horror filled great arc to the campaign, then throws in his own little dabble of monsterous story telling to add a party impacting scene......then far into the future one of the pcs of said party uses the story already told and adds her own flare to it to open old wounds long forgotten. The joys that is DnD, thank your critical role for the laughs, the love, the horror, and the heart break.
The fact that everything involving the Briarwoods is a somewhat well known historical event, I just find it a wild part of her character that Laudna knows absolutely nothing that happened after she was killed. Nothing about Vox Machina, Vecna, or literally anything involving the Briarwoods in C1. There's potentially some really fun roleplaying opportunities should more C1 related things pop up in the campaign
She did mention that Laudna was a recluse. General population chased her away, thinking she was an evil witch. She talked about how she usually stay and fixed up an abandon shack in a wood, until she was chased away again. So my guess is, if she was aware of VM, it would have been in a very peripheral senses. Words of mouth so many times removed from the source that it's barely any facts remains.
Also depends on when she was revived. If she was out until Delilah died... And then after that nobody wanted to talk to the local zombie girl, it makes sense.
Have they addressed how she always names things after fancy foods? Pate, Sashimi, Caviar. Oof. Also, completely forgot to rewatch the cartoon after finding this out on CR and see how they drew Laudna.
"You're one of the happiest people in this group. How?" "The worst thing that could ever happen to me... already has" This, friends is where I started tearing up and I have seen neither C1 or the animated show (already knew about the sun tree though bcos it's impossible to avoid spoilers about campaign 1 hehe)
I believe this comes from something quite real and that’s why it is so effective. Marisha has traumas in her past (obvi not being killed lol) and she covered some in her after dark interview. Songs like “I am here” are on Beau’s playlist and there’s a line in it that goes “I’ve already seen the bottom so there’s nothing to fear”. I think this is a pretty good example of why people say “write what you know”; she’s never been literally undead (I assume) but she sure as hell knows what it’s like to survive.
@@ArtOfShannonLee when you say after dark interview, is that the same as the between the sheets interview? Or is it a different one I haven't seen yet? (In which case I must watch it immediately!)
@@myriadd6272 uhh you might be right whoops- I’m not sure because I watched it a year or more ago. But she talked about some of her experiences with sexual assault and not being believed, if feeling she had to raise herself, etc. I identify with her a lot. She’s a legend.
@@ArtOfShannonLee aah yes that's the between the sheets one which I have seen, and yeah she's pretty awesome. I honestly cried when I watched that interview bcos it's so heartbreaking but also she's so positive and happy and genuinely has a great life now and I'm so happy for her. I never thought of that as a partial reason behind Laudna's backstory but you're completely right there are certainly shades of it 👍
Oh man that music, what a wonderful bow on top of this wonderful gift. It's a sad one... but it really hits me in places I thought I didn't have anymore.
When I was watching this and heard her talking about this I was like “NOOOOO WAYYYYYYYY!!!!” I freaked out on my lunch break, and all my co workers came to check in on me
So Laudna was supposed to be the stand-in for Vex......gods, the character choice to go more in-depth with that was once hell of a decision, Marisha......I applaud it completely
SPOILERS FOR RECENT EVENTS After this episode, we would never view that moment at the Sun Tree the same way ever again. and now... we've come full circle. Not only did Keyleth immediately recognize Laudna from the tree, a memory from 33 years ago, but she's been brought back home, her fate to be determined by the Lord and Lady of Whitestone, the latter being the very woman she was propped up as a message for.
We saw this episode in the theatre, and holy shit was it insane. Everyone was dead quiet until we heard it all, and everyone was just gasping and saying "oh my god". Absolute chills
When I first watched this episode I connected the dots; but you marrying it with the animated clips really hits hard. Very, very well done. Really didn't want to cry this late at night though.
I remember reading comments that had the theory brewing in those early campaign days… but when Marisha first started speaking about it, it grabbed me and wouldn’t let go until this bit was over. Honestly why I’m hoping the next book is enjoyable to read. I want more of Laudna’s story.
i remember watching this moment live. it took me a second to understand. when it finally hit me, my heart dropped, it was so gut-wrenchingly sad and generally just horrifying to hear
Words truly cannot express how shooketh I was at that reveal. It was AMAZING story telling, and a call back to something we may have forgotten about(were it not for the animation now). And even still, further tying the world together by bringing, essentially, a cannon fodder character into the light and making an opening to revisit the old story/characters. Maybe even make one a villain of sorts for Laudna...
I'm not the best at seeing certain things like Travis but as soon as she started explaining my brain went full beautiful mind and I figured it out before them and I was so proud of myself lol
Just realized that this technically means that Laudna is the first player character outside of Campaign 1 to appear in Vox Machina. Unless I am having a HUGE mind fuck right now.
Matt: These seem like pretty cool monsters to make them fight, we’ll have a fun airship encounter and then move on. Ashely: I remove the eye and sniff it and lick it TELL ME EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MONSTER’S EYEBALL DO IT DO IT NOW Matt: uh, citrus??? Ashley: I SQUEEZE IT Matt:
I saw someone suggesting that she wasn't Vex's double but actually Vax's She couldn't be Keyleth's because her description of what she looked like when she woke up didn't match Keyleth at all The only reason she'd be Vex's double is she's a woman But Vex and Vax always looked so similar She woke up in leathers, not furs No mention of a feather or a blue dress or anything particularly detailed (which Vex's wardrobe was always more detailed and unique than Vax's black rogue leathers) She just says "I woke up in leathers" She has a raven's skull she put on Pate (maybe put on her when she was hung or maybe Marisha's Vax Easter egg to hint her identity) And it'd make more sense for Marisha's character to be Liam's character's body double The idea that both Liam and Marisha's characters in this campaign are almost love letters to Keyleth and Vax makes me so giddy Also I know in the animation, Vax's double was a man pre hanging BUT the animation was done before campaign 3 was even in prep so details can change I'd then assume her mother was Vex and her father was Percy because then that's also a love letter to them two as Launda is, in a very weird way, a portrayal of Percy and Vex's child But maybe that's going too much into it
Also Vax and Laudna both have black hair while Vex has brown. And how easy would it be to find a man with hair as long as Vax's? It would probably be easier to body double him with a woman especially when he was already quite androgynous
The moment this scene dropped, all the air was sucked out of the room. You could hear a pin drop. And then, suddenly, everyone connected the dots. That's when the tears started.
But like a full party of the undead that we’re dressed as the first cast where each character is like the opposite class of the original character they were dressed up as
