Since 1968 when the Open Era began, no male or female player won more singles tournaments than Navratilova (167), doubles events (177), or matches (2,189). She felt the ping of defeat a meager 219 times (singles) in a career that began in 1975. She was still active in 2006 when she won the mixed doubles championship at the US Open a month away from her 50th birthday, becoming the oldest player in history to win a major title. Opponents who faced Navratilova in singles play stood a scant 13 percent chance of winning; the left-handed athlete par excellence won 87 percent of her matches. In doubles competition Navratilova was 747-143, an 84 percent winning clip. Still, all good things must come to an end. Martina Navratilova reflects on the exact moment it was time for her to hang up the racket and call it quits - for good this time.

She revolutionized womans tennis. It was obvious she was training hard off the court too. Even at 49, she was in dam good shape. Congrats on a long fantastic career.

Martina Navratilova can be seen as the greatest women's doubles player ever. She won an amazing THIRTY ONE Grand Slam doubles titles in her career. She won at least SEVEN doubles titles at each of the Grand Slam events (8 at Australia, 7 at the French, 7 at Wimbledon and 9 at the US open). No other tennis player (male or female) is close to either one of those records. 31 titles in one discipline (doubles) is 7 more than anyone else has won. Her 7 doubles titles at each GS event is 3 more than anyone else (Steffi won at least 4 singles titles at all 4 of the GS events). The player who can give her a run for the title as the greatest women's doubles player - is Margaret Court. Margaret won 19 Grand Slam doubles titles in just 46 GS tournaments for a .413 W%. She won the GS doubles title over 41% of the time that she entered the event. Martina won 31 times in the 86 GS doubles events she entered (.360). And when we add the mixed doubles event into the mix... Court comes out way ahead. Margaret won an unreal 21 GS mixed doubles titles out of the 34 GS events that she entered. She won the GS mixed event a phenomenal 62% of the time that she entered it. Martina won 10 GS mixed doubles events out of the 49 that she entered (20%). Adding the mixed and the women's doubles together - to give us a total Grand Slam doubles events won... shows Margaret Court with an astonishing FORTY GS doubles titles in just 80 GS doubles events entered. Court won a GS doubles title in exactly HALF of the GS doubles events she entered (40 out of 80). Navratilova won 41 total GS doubles titles (31 doubles + 10 mixed) but she entered 135 GS doubles events (41 out of 135). She won the GS doubles event 30% of the time when she entered. Another way of saying the difference is this... Martina played in 55 more GS doubles events than Margaret - to end up with one more title. Here is is a look at the women players with the most Grand Slam titles (single + doubles + mixed) for their careers. Court won 24 GS singles titles in 47 events (51%). 19 doubles titles in 46 events (41%). 21 mixed titles in 34 events (62%). Overall she won 64 GS titles in 127 events (.504). Navratilova won 18 GS singles titles in 67 events (27%). 31 doubles in 86 events (36%). 10 mixed in 49 events (20%). Overall she won 59 GS titles in 202 events (.292). Serena won 23 GS singles titles in 81 GS events (28%). 14 doubles in 35 events (40%). 2 mixed titles in 7 events (29%). Overall she won 39 GS titles in 123 events (.317). B.J. King won 12 GS singles titles 51 events (24%). 16 doubles in 54 events (30%). 11 mixed titles in 47 events (23%). Overall she won 39 GS titles in 152 events (.257). Margaret Court won more than HALF the Grand Salm events that she entered (64 titles in 127 events, a .504 W%). No one will ever come close to that astounding record. Martina Navratilova won 59 GS titles - which is close to Court's total... but she played in 202 GS events, putting her title winning percentage at .292. Serena Williams won 39 GS titles in 123 events (a .317 W%). Billie Jean King won 39 GS titles in 152 events (a .235 W%). Hard to see Serena as the greatest player when she trails Court by so many GS titles (64 to 39)... AND her GS title W% is also WAY lower than Margaret's (.504 to .317). I'd have to place Serena at third place behind both Court and Navratilova. In terms of just singles... Court won 24 Grand Slam tournaments out of the 47 she played. That's a .511 title winning percentage. She won more than HALF of the GS singles events she entered! Steffi Graff won 22 GS titles out of the 54 GS tournaments she played. That is a .407 GS title winning percentage. Chris Evert won 18 GS titles out of the 56 GS tournaments she played. That is a .321 GS title winning percentage. Serena won 23 GS titles out of the 81 GS tournaments she played. That is a .284 GS title winning percentage. Martina won 18 GS titles out of the 67 GS tournaments she played. That us a .269 GS title winning percentage. Billie Jean King won 12 GS titles out of 51 tournaments she played. That is a .235 GS title winning percentage. Monica Seles had won 8 GS titles out of the 14 GS tournaments she had played before she was stabbed (a phenomenal .571 GS title winning percentage)! Monica had made the finals of each of the last EIGHT grand slam finals - and WON SEVEN of the eight (a .875 GS title W%) - before she was stabbed! I still weep for all that we lost (and especially what Monica lost) when that insane moment changed the course of tennis history. Chris and Martina both lost many GS titles by having to play against each other during their careers. Court had Billie Jean King as a worthy opponent during her career - and Margaret even beat Evert on clay for one of her GS titles. Graf had her greatest rival (Seles) taken out of the game at the peak of her powers... and gained a lot of her titles after that happened. Serena had no other all time great player during her era (with her sister being the next best). Graf was #1 eight times (4 times AFTER Seles was stabbed). Court was #1 seven times. Evert and Navratilova were both #1 six times. Serena was #1 five times. Monica Seles was just 19 years and 5 months old... when she was stabbed on April 30th, 1993.. She had won 7 of the last 8 Grand Slam titles that she had entered and still had 3 more majors to play BEFORE she would have turned 20 years old. She could very realistically have had TEN Grand Slam singles titles as a teenager!

(unpopular opinion) She is utterly cocky and unbearable...Plus, she always secretly hated Queens Williamses!
