Uproarious election aftermath chat & lighthearted analysis from the then king of politics Robin Day, camp as Christmas Norman St John Stevas, and hilarious drag-a-like Thatcher clone Dame Marcia Falkender.
This clip contains the actual moment Thatcher officially passes the winning post & becomes the next Prime Minister.
Quote of the day Robin to Norman "Now I just wanted to ask you, how do you think your talents, which are of course immeasurable... you can take that either way you like!
As a child I always found Norman SS quite 'interesting' and very theatrical. Here he's about as gay as you can get in a serious political interview from 1979 without actually getting up on the desk and giving his rendition of Doris Day's 'Secret Love' in a gingham pinafore!
Simon Hoggart noted in his Guardian obituary of Stevas:
"He lived in that period where gay politicians never came out, yet were happy for everyone to know. He lived life as a camp performance". Indeed he did.
Norman died in March 2012 from undisclosed causes, aged 82, RIP.
Enjoy!

Does anybody notice that Robin pauses and lets his interviewees finish their sentence?? Pity we don’t have anyone like him now.

Interviewers today are aware they interrupt people, and inform their interviewees beforehand. It's because broadcasters' time slots are much shorter and more pressured nowadays.

Delightful and just shows you how politics has gone right down the pan. Normas speaks very generously of Shirley Williams: there is repartee and banter. How dreadful it all is today.

No John. That was in October 1964 when Roy Jenkins became Home Secretary and was allowed to wreak havoc with his social "reforms".

StJohn-Stevas is that rare phenomenon, the right-wing queen. They're usually elderly gentlemen with fruity accents and blue rinses, billed as "constitutional experts" in television programmes about the life of the Queen Mother.

Interesting observations, however, 'right-wing queens' aren't rare at all, absolutely not, in the UK at least, conservative politics is bejewelled with them, in front & behind the scenes. Dame Norman, gawd bless him, just couldn't hide it, unlike his closeted friends in the party, I know, I've been to a few Tory do's & it was heaving with them. Why do think Thatcher was such a big hit with the Tories, she was the best drag act ever ;-).

@@thebadtemperedbrit I think Thatcher was sexually appealing to a certain type of straight male Tory MP as the dominatrix

David Dimbleby would've said, "Sorry, Robin, I'll have to interrupt; but as you can see on the bottom of the screen, the Conservatives have won this election and that Margaret Thatcher will be our new Prime Minister", followed by a few minutes of ad-lib before returning to Robin. Nine years later here in the States, Dan Rather had to cut an interview short to announce that Missouri -- and thus the presidency -- went to George H.W. Bush, earning enough electoral votes to put him over the top (minimum number required to win is 270).

Lady Faulkender handles a couple cringe moments like a pro. I like her a lot.

She handles herself wonderfully indeed, but nothing cringe-worthy, just tittersome.

He wasn't a fan Thatcher's politics as you can probably guess from his reaction.

Norman was a "one nation tory", a centre politician, and didn't like Thatcher's severe right wing stances.

It was certainly a turning point. From WW2 to 1979, the UK had close to the slowest growth in the western world and close to the highest inflation. From then to the Brexit referendum, the UK had above average growth and inflation came back to the pack. It successfully reversed two invasions, Falklands in 1982 and participating in the UN operation to rescue Kuwait in 1990, tho it later went over the top. It became one of the most ethnically diverse advanced countries, and perhaps the one in which minorities had the best chance of getting to the top. It went from a country out of which there was a brain drain to one to which people from all over the world were attracted to come. But under the legacy of the 2008 crash and the consequent European debt crisis, its own people were not fully reconciled to those achievements and lashed out against the wrong target.
