The moment when mankind began to irreversibly change the earth | DW News

Modern humans have walked the earth for about 300 Thousand years - and especially in the past 6.000 years we have left our mark. Now, a group of scientists claims to have identified the place which best illustrates the destabilizing affect humans have had on our planet. And they say research at the site allows them to pinpoint the nineteen-fifties as the time when a new geological time period began - the Anthropocene.
The Anthropocene Working Group investigated layers of sediment at the bottom of Crawford Lake in Canada. They say those sediments show evidence of a sudden and irreversible shift in conditions on Earth. Evidence of human involvement included the presence of fly ash from the combustion of fossil fuels, acid rain and radioactive fallout from nuclear bomb tests.
We can now speak to Francine McCarthy, she's a micro-paleontologist and member of the Anthropocene Working Group. We ask her: What did you find in Crawford Lake that allowed you to pinpoint the beginning of the Anthropocene?

Why Crawford Lake, though? EDIT: Aha, I found the explanation: ""... this humble little lake’s chemistry is among the rarest in the world ... the lake is meromictic, meaning its top and bottom layers never mix. The ratio of its depth of 24 metres and its surface area of 2.4 hectares prevents mixing ... in addition, the bottom layer contains oxygen. Geologists know of no other lake in North America with that combination and few others in the world. The result is that material falls to the bottom of the lake and is sealed by deposits of calcite in distinct couplets of layers, called varves, separated into summer and winter seasons. Each layer can be dated to the exact year, critical to the nomination for golden spike.""

What I see is that the generations who were driving this change at that point in time are the same ones who did very well, by and large, economically. Often it's a struggle for them to understand that the thinking which lead to ramped up, unbridled consumption is much the same thinking that lead to setting their generations up to have all the money and all the things while leaving less for following generations. My parents and grandparents cannot see that things have changed in more than one area, driven by their generations.

Give me a break. While agreeing that we need to do everything practical to eliminate pollution, and to protect the air, water and soil, this is simple alarmism. The Earth has gone through several periods of being hotter and having more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The environment is an incredibly complex system that changes over millennia. Our instruments for measuring the factors that change the environment are at best a few hundred years old and in many cases less than two hundred years old. On top of that, our ability to precisely measure most of it is a few decades old. And these alarmists are all screaming about the "science"! What we have is insufficient data and unproven hypotheses being bandied about to allow a ruling class to rob and control the unwashed masses.

"The Earth has gone through several periods of being hotter and having more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere." We know that. Look, if a person does not know that (and very few people don't know that) i don't consider him to be dumb. He's just ignorant. What i really consider a dumb person is someone that thinks that this information: "The Earth has gone through several periods of being hotter and having more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere." is not known by the wider public and somehow disproves that anthropogenic climate change is a catastrophe.
@bubshab
@bubshab Год назад
It has all been proven, with data looking long periods of time, and in the lab with experiments. The published papers are near-endless. If you add trillions upon trillions of kilojoules of heat into a system, you will change it. Thermodynamics governs us all, and we have tipped the equilibrium irreversibly.
@Blodhelm
@Blodhelm Год назад
Yeah, the Earth has changed a lot over billions of years but guess what, numbnuts, we weren't there in those periods and most life on the planet now couldn't survive those conditions. Nobody can take you seriously when you try to pretend your scientific standards are so high that thousands of scientists working for decades can't satisfy you with their data that you obviously haven't read and yet you don't even know about geological, dendrological or ice records. Before parroting fossil fuel company shill talking points, you should look at who has the money and who is actually controlling the unwashed masses through access to energy. You should feel ashamed of your ignorance, not take pride in it.

Naturally, we released it back into the lake, and it exposed it's belly to us before going it's separate way. @@MilitantPacifist69 just like the dinosaurs effected their environment, (your thinking in terms of extinction events). No higher power was involved in the the sediment (keep in the realms of science not make believe), ice age there is another example any period in time of a dominant species or climate will effect sediment just like us in our time it not unique to us nor is it a global catastrophic event that we will destroy the environment because you can not predict the future it is not set in stone or in this case sediment. (just to add if your remarks are calling some one dense that is relevant to IQ not knowledge). You are still thinking to small, What is done cannot be undone but it can be changed but, this planet has an amazing capacity to heal remarcably well beyond our understanding. And having insult people is already a clear marker you are hardly a pacifist and have already lost the this exchange... name calling and cheap insults are what children do so if u are willing to engage in a reasonable debate then yes by all means or in otherworlds (I will come down to your level for this comment) STFU...
