So I had another video planned for release, but after spending some time playing the Grandmother I truly found a new appreciation for what Moog brought to the Mooger and Mini lineup over the years. Let's take a look back, from Big Briar to today, we'll cover it all as quickly as possible.

@@NoirEtBlancVie ugh my secret's out 😩. I was going to do one, but honestly my heart wasn't in it. My pedal collection is... It's out of control. Something like 30 fuzz pedals right now. That's just the fuzz pedals. Terrible scenes. I'll drop you a link to something that might be a little contrasting with my ambient noodlings and borderline ASMR...

the brains of the setup is the MP201. AKA the gas pedal. It was designed to provide 'presets' for connected Moogerfoogers. It gave the owner 4 CV or gate outs as well as MIDI DIN and USB connectivity. It seems to rarely have been used just to bop a Moogerfooger with an LFO. Rather it quickly became the heart of many performing experimental musicians setups. It had this great ability to link MIDI and CV gear. Ironically, in all the setups I've seen the MP201. Many many users never used the gas pedal function for anything. Setting it up on a table next to their eurorack and patchable synths. I wish they would make am MP201 MKII with twice the CV outputs and no gas pedal. Oh yeah I think you skipped the MIDI MurF as well.

Love my Foogers, I snapped up a 104m when I read it would be discontinued as I thought it would be a good investment, even if it was a guilty purchase at the time. Bought the ring mod shortly after. Last I checked the 104m was going for around £2k on eBay but I will never let it go.

I remember seeing the Mooger Fooger line in shops when I was starting out. I was always intrigued but was astounded how expensive they were compared to the guitar pedals they were sitting next to. It ended up deterring me from exploring them for years. When the MF mini line came out I had a better grasp on what they were and their purpose but ended up skipping out as I mostly worked in the box. After watching this video, it seems like I missed out both times. I would love to see more Moog pedals.

If I had to guess, I think that they maybe discontinued the Moogerfooger line in order to make them available as a eurorack line of effects in the near future. Seeing that eurorack community and interest has continued to increased in recent years, it would make sense to make the transition from the guitar pedal format into module format. This would also be in line with their trend of releasing eurorack compatible products, i.e. mother, grandmother. subharmonicon, etc. If they released them in module format I'd definitely be interested, even though I'd still hang on to my classic Moogerfoogers because of the beautiful design and great tactile nature.

@jeremyrmcmahan

I also wonder if they were discontinued just due to lack of resources and dedicated labor into other projects, ie using their limited bucket brigade chips on the matriarch rather then making more of the MF-104m. They released that limited run pretty soon after they released the matriarch if I remember correctly.
@mikedurden
@mikedurden 3 года назад
@@jeremyrmcmahan They didn't use the limited bucket brigade chips on the Matriarch. If they did, then that would mean they could only make a limited amount of Matriarchs with that delay. The chip used on the MF-104 is one that is out of production and so they have to use a different delay design for the Matriarch. This is from an interview on the Musicians Friend website: " The Moogerfooger MF-104 delay uses a vintage BBD chip that is no longer in production. As less and less of these vintage BBDs become available, it becomes nearly impossible for us to build new MF-104s (for our most recent run, we were able to source enough vintage BBDs for just 100 units). Matriarch uses a circuit design from the MF-104m and Moog 500 Series Analog Delay, with a few tweaks to allow for the use of a modern and readily available BBD. Matriarch was the perfect opportunity for us to continue the development of our analog delay designs, while offering a new sonic pallet in the Moog Semi-Modular family of synthesizers."
@jeremyrmcmahan
@jeremyrmcmahan 3 года назад
@@mikedurden ahh you are correct, i looked into more and I found an article saying they used vintage chips for the MF-104s (that's why they don't make them anymore) and they are using a modern BBD chip for the Matriarch.

Personally I'm obsessed with the Fooger line and went a little wild with it over the past couple years. Picked up one of the last Mf-101s news that Sweetwater had and eventually purchased the Mf-102 and Mf-107 off Craiglist (both in white too!). As far as the minifoogers go, I have the boost, chorus, delay, and flanger, all of which are awesome. Finally picked up a CP-251 this year and totally opens everything up to another level. Would love the phaser and the clusterflux...and of the course the delay though unless I have stupid amounts of money I'll probably never buy one. Awesome video though and thanks for making it.

I used to have every Moogerfooger for my guitar pedalboard. I was in a situation where I had to sell them. I'm not sentimental about music gear at all, but I really miss those pedals. Moog has a way of creating things that you can play and connect with on a different level. They understand how we interface with them and they have the ability to cover a broad range of sounds while still sounding like a Moog. I hope they release a new line of pedals that take it further and have semi-modular connections for the rest of the semi-modular synths. Maybe they can approach effect as expanders that can be patched into their synths, while still being pedalboard friendly? The Minifoogers were just standard effects done in a way that guitar players are already used to and lost sight of what makes the Moogerfoogers magical.
@septembersoul5938
@septembersoul5938 Год назад
I really wish they would bring some of these back. I'm not sure if it's a parts issue, or if they just weren't selling well. The reseller market is a bit much. Moog would be doing a service to their customers, if they re-released these. Even if it was a limited run. They just released the plugins, so maybe they're thinking about the hardware too.

@@NoirEtBlancVie It was getting to be too much, with three eurorack cases the moogerfoogers were gathering dust. I had the ring modulator, freq box, phaser, and lowpass right before I decided eurorack would be more practical from a patching and power supply standpoint. The lowpass filter I got back in 2000 and 20 years later I still love to tweak it during recording running it into the minifooger delay. The rest of them kind of became redundant with the modules I picked up, and after the line was discontinued they all went up in value. It seems the right thing to do to sell gear you don't use, after all I am not starting a synth museum. But It might have been short sighted to sell the phaser though.

If they are going to create a follow up the Ring Thing then what about using the Tayloe Mixer with a LT700 driving a audio phase shifting network which drives the Tayloe Mixer proper which will have a clock at 4 KHZ to 20 KHZ which drives a 74AC74 which drives the 74HC152 which outputs out through a LT700 transformer to a effect control then a analogue mixer with the input signal to produce the desired output.

Do you find that chaining the foogers leads to signal loss? I find it fairly difficult to get a good balance between wet and dry signals between drive and output settings on the foogers. I only lack the CP-251 and Freqbox, and I fear that I may never get them at current prices. I might break up the band, though. If my 104M Super Delay keeps going up in price, I might be able to get a whole synth for it in trade, LOL.

So I have the Plugins, I’ll give my review: So the Low Pass filter one is my favorite so far, I’m using it right now on the Halloween Special music, it really takes the edge off anything I’ve fed it. 2nd of course I used the Phaser, so, it sounds like the Phaser, but at the same time it doesn’t…like, I know the 12 stage phaser too well. I could probably pick it out side by side hardware vs plug-in. That’s said, they sound like the hardware in a way, maybe a 2D version of the hardware, but at the prices now for the hardware, I’d buy the plugins, that said. I prefer Waves Kaleidoscope as my overall chorus phaser in the box. That’s what I actually use.☺️

It's pretty cool with a strange envelope follower that I like sometimes and hate other times. I've also seen this thing lately called the Long Life by Fairfield Circuitry. It's a pedal that can integrate with modular synths which seems pretty interesting. I'm trying to talk my bassist into buying it to create overtone chords with distorted bass lines. I'm always looking for more filter pedals for guitar! If you know of any, please leave a comment!
