Off to the Moretonhampstead Motor Museum in Devon! This classic car and motorcycle museum is housed in a wonderful former bus depot that dates back to the early 1930s, in the small town of Moretonhampstead which is located on Exmoor in Devon, not too far west of Exeter.
The varied line-up of preserved vehicles is displayed over two floors, surrounded by many mouthwatering items of automobilia to complete the display. We'd never been here before so apart from a few photos found online, we weren't really sure what we'd stumble across. We arrived before the museum's opening time, and the owner was to be seen arriving in his tidy Wolseley 1500 to open up. As we had a little time in hand, we ambled into the town itself, grabbed a quick bite to eat, then headed back - cameras in hand - to have a good look around the Moretonhampstead Motor Museum.
The cars on display dated from the 1920s through to the 1980s, most falling into the 1930s-1960s timeframe. Highlights included an Austin-Healey Sprite Mk1 adorned with every screw-on accessory you could think of (and then some), a magnificent pre-war Hotchkiss, immaculate Mk1 Ford Cortina, Wolseley 6/80, MG Magnette, Vauxhall Wyvern E-Series (for sale!), a super-rare Vanden Plas version of the Austin A105 Westminster, A40 Mk2 (check out the main Devon "finds" video at the end of this one for more exciting A40 content), a super-original Farina-bodied Magnette, a racey-looking MGC, pale blue Rochdale Olympic, and a mixed gaggle of pre-war cars up on the first floor. The last Austin J40 pedal car ever made, in 1971, was also an interesting discovery.
Overall we had a very interesting time mooching around the Moretonhampstead Motor Museum and definitely recommend it to anyone in the area who likes their classic cars and/or motorcycles.

Visited this museum in 2018 when I was on a motor museum crawl of the UK with a car nut friend. We both loved it. This and Lakeland Museum were my favourites. Not big and flashy but fascinating. I must say collection has almost completely changed since 2018 which is excellent and means a revisit always worth it.

That was a real pleasure as well as a wander down memory lane. Many of the 1950s and 60s cars were coming to the end of their lives in the late 70s and early 80s when young fools like me would get them for virtually nothing and run them into the ground. Old cars don't last long in the hands of teenage boys who think they are Gods gift to driving, but at least they were easy to fix or replace ;).

What a fantastic Museum Rick, and your commentary was excellent. So many unusual vehicles there, never seen before - a real treasure trove. You mentioned the Honda C50 earlier. When I started work at 16, 52 years ago, I had a 1965, two tone blue Honda C50 to get me to and from work. EYC 62C. What great little machines they were, real work horses. It served me well for 2 years until I got my Driving Licence. There is one on ebay now, same colour and year for just shy of £6000 ! Happy days ! Thanks Rick for sharing this wonderful place with us. Take care 🙂

What a cracking collection. It was good to see that some were used and others for sale. I did some work for the late Tom Wheatcroft who did use some of his great collection. Cars are to used not sitting to deteriorate. Again its good to see father and son enjoying our motoring heritage. And as Jag man, well done Harley for your choice! Love it! I spotted a 680 in the background - an example of my first car! Rob

I was the proud owner of two Honda 90s, both in grey and white. One when I lived there in Devon (in a village called Winkleigh), the other when I first moved to London in the late 70s. I once rode it from London to Cambridge and back in one weekend!

Loved seeing the BSA Beagle, Dad bought one for me when I was 12 as a garden bike. Think it was £12 secondhand in 1969 and was reg no. DWC 14B. Kick start was broken so had to bump start it. Unusual for a british bike to have a pressed steel frame and be a 4 stroke. After I had my fun with it, I sold it to a boy who lived nearby, but it was soon wrecked and ended its days on a scrapheap. Should have kept it as they are rare to see today.

Hi Richard, very much enjoying your tour of the West Country, we live in South Somerset and recognize a lot of us places you've been, however others were not known to me such as the museum at Moretonhampstead. We will be off to have a look in the near future, you would have been welcome to pop in for a cuppa and a look at my old P4 100 on your travels. Keep up the good work. Best regards. Nigel.

Thanks again Richard. What a nice little museum with lots of interesting cars. I don't know how that "T-bucket" hot rod got in there, but it was a nice aside. My choice would be the Sunbeam Alpine. I love that style and I'm OK with the 4 banger.

When they closed down the books for P6 were full, they could have kept it going with SD1. They have a safety feature that people are unaware of. There's a thick steel beam running across the shell, so if in a crash, the engine was forced down, so it didn't enter the cabin.

Another thoroughly enjoyable museum visit video, the incidental information that you share as you walk around really adds to the experience!😁 In fact you inspired me to visit a motor museum, I visited a French one at the weekend, I noticed something very interesting, a French company called Rosengart made Austin 7s under licence, they had to lovely examples there.

No sign of the 1933 Morris Minor Two-seater on display, sadly. I'm guessing they still have it but it's in storage. The cut-off date for the London to Brighton Veteran Run is the end of 1904, so the 1905 Wolseley isn't eligible.

Circa 1975 / 76 I trudged across a muddy field along side the M1 to look at a sad looking wreak of an Austin Devon van / estate sitting there up to its axle in mud etc, rightly or wrongly I salvaged all the chrome strips from the grill. And later sold them all for a pound note at an autojumble 😅 The day I made my fortune, the guy who purchased them was very happy indeed with his find as i recall 😊 enjoyable video, thank you.

Hi 👋 Such a magnificent display of classic old Autos and related things. We,have a Car Museum here in Paraparaumu , situated near Wellington. It's called Southward car museum. I visited it about 20 years ago now. The museum shown in your video is very similar. The only difference is we have old Australian cars such as the FJ Holden which dates back to the late 1940s on show. That old pedal car took me back to my childhood. I had a red metal one I remember, very similar. Thanks for posting this interesting video. From Carl in NZ.

Thanks for the video. A superb collection. That Farina Magnette is rare gem. Farina cars have been relatively neglected until recently and owing to rust and "b" racing are getting rare. I can definitely see a Wyvern in your future.

Thoroughly enjoy your upload's,they're superbly made and with great enthusiasm and knowlede,it's a trip down memory lane, I wish I had my old P5B Rover back which was Cameroon Green rather than the usual Arden Green and had the Saddle Tan interior. I lived by the Kingsbury Vanden Plas works and in the 70s remember mostly the DS420 in black on display. Thank's for a super vid, Best wishes to yourself, family, friends and fellow viewers.

The Talbot Ten exactly as my Father owned up until about 1954. Sadly, I don't know it's registration number and a photo of him, stood alongside is one of the few memories I have of him. His was in to tone blues and he carried out a total nut and bolt rebuild of it. It had to go for the house deposit before I arrived so I never got to see it but my older cousin had a ride in it when he was just a young boy.

An interesting little place RJ, it has very good Google reviews although strangely enough it isn't listed on the Moretonhampstead Wikipedia page as a tourist attraction. A thought, how did they paint cars back in the 1920's initially I wonder. My Father had a BSA Bantam and a Royal Enfield in the 1950's I had the job of cleaning them especially the spiked wheels which were a nightmare to clean.

Back in the mid 1980’s I had a 1964 Dodge Dart G.T. It was my only transportation, but it needed more work than I could afford at that time, so i traded it to a local Teenager for a Honda SPREE, 50cc scooter [ and 2 helmets] even swap . I rode that tiny little thing 10 miles [ each way] down a very busy U.S. Highway [ US-41], top speed on it was 35 mph. Speed limit on that highway 50 mph. Pretty scary. I rode the heck out of that little thing for close to a year before I could get another car. [ yeah, roughly 23 miles round trip. But it never failed me.] 📻🙂
