You must pay enormous bribes and kickbacks to the unions in Canada if you want anything done. That's why Olympic Stadium cost so much to build in the first place.
$870,000,000 CAD ! Incredible ! There's always been quite a bit of corruption in Quebec, especially in Construction works ! There's often DOUBLING of final costs at the end of construction as compared to the initial budget due to what they call «cost overrun» (dépassement de coûts) !
I wonder what you think about Australia where most cities major stadiums are technically more than 150 year old that have just been repeatedly renovated and expanded. The idea of making new stadiums to replace these icons would horrify people.
If it’s costing 2 billion to tear down now, it will cost 3 billion or more in the future. There is no way that the city or the province can justify the true money pit that the Olympic Stadium is.
The references to Rogers Centre being $450m doesn't even mention that the reason they're doing it is because it's a premium downtown location. Olympic stadium is far from a premium location.
I’m a Canadian I was sad to see the expos leave however I think we just need to move on and except that it will never happen. It’s like the Québec Nordiques in the national hockey league. It’s the dream that will never die.
There's actually a sliver of a chance the Expos come back if an ownership group can get together, MLB has stated they really want back in (as opposed to the NHL) lol
A better use for the Big Owe is to be the permanent home for the Canadiens for their biggest-draw matchups -- vs Toronto, Ottawa, and Boston especially. Easy sellouts.
@@kiroolioneaver8532 Why would the NHL not want another team there? I think Quebec and Toronto (Hamilton) should get another team. I'm surprised Arizona hasn't moved there.
@@91_C4_FL If the Lightning moved back to the Trop they'd sell out the place, but the Rays can have a World Series contending team but play to empty seats every night. Who'd have thought Tampa Bay would be a HOCKEY town?
@@racingphotographer8251 Baseball just struggles in Florida. I think it has to do with all the retirees and transplants from the northeast and midwest down here. But yeah, the Lightning have been a staple in the community for decades. They had a cult following for a while, but after the Rays 2008 run, the Bolts have been neck and neck with the Bucs in local popularity. I hope Amalie Arena gets an update soon though.
Canada deserves to be able to have their own Mt. Davis too. Obviously they can't get the real Mt. Davis so an comparable replacement will have to be much more expensive. $870M sounds about right. Mt. Davis is worth at least twice that in sentimental value alone.
No, not "cost in Canada". Cost in Quebec. Everything is more expensive by orders of magnitude in Quebec. Because the government builds everything through the lens of "culture".
It reflects on Quebec way more than the rest of Canada, which (prior to JT) functioned relatively normally. Montreal has always been the epitome of corruption in North America alongside Chicago.
As for the Videotron Center, I saw its 3-year construction, and went to the free public visiting just before its official opening in September 2015 ! It's built on the land where the Hippodrome horse race track used to be.
Speaking as someone from Montreal, there are several reasons for this (Not that I agree with them) 1. Olympic Stadium is considered to be a cultural landmark by the people of Quebec, loved for its unique architecture and international notoriety, as well as being a symbol of the city when it was at it's peak, before Toronto overtook it as the beating heart of the nation. 2. The government wants to ensure that the building survives well into the future. They don't want to get rid of it. 3. The Quebec government is notoriously corrupt the cost for this thing makes absolutely no sense and as far as I know the interior won't even be touched. Those god-awful yellow seats that make the stadium that much more ugly on the inside are apparently here to stay. The money will end up lining the pockets of some corrupt politicians and other groups associated. Still, the city badly needs a new building for large events. The big Os location in the far east of the island makes commuting there a nightmare and it's acoustics are some of the worst in the world for concerts.
new roof would cost = 870 million, Quebec’s tourism minister says tearing down Montreal’s Olympic Stadium would cost $2 billion, where do they get these figures?
Never have I heard of a bigger waste of money, not one single element of this plan will ever make sense. Didn't they lose the Expos because of problems with this eye sore? Do they have a current pro sports team calling this concrete space saucer home?? Do they want Taylor Swift to play there that bad? If she comes they better pray she agrees to a residency and plays there for a few years to pay for the roof, and if you decide to go be aware the plumbing probably won't work well and there still wont be any good views of the stage.
Who came up with this "bright idea"? It's like when the city of Oakland added Mount Davis in the upper stands for Raiders when they returned from LA, only later to be tarped off and the Raiders left, and next the Athletics for Las Vegas. That Mount Davis money could have been used to construct a new stadium.
To be fair it will be about 645 USD after the exchange rate. Stadium is needed for early season MLS games, CFL playoffs, big concerts and one off events. Can also be used a temporary stadium for relocated baseball team
Why, just why. I'm from Toronto, the Rogers Centre renovation isn't even nearly half this, and that is for a stadium that was still useable and is honestly way better now with them. What's the point other than tourism or preserving the heritage of the city? What a waste.
Unbelievable! That concrete out-house has been falling apart since shortly after it was built, the roof never did work properly, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.
$870 Million for a Roof????? wow, I there gold and diamonds built into it. Audit this immediately because this stinks to high heaven. You'd need another Billion dollars just to fix the inside of this Stadium. Do they want the stadium for Soccer, NFL, CFL etc or do they want it for Concerts, WWE, UFC, Boxing etc. Everything in there needs fixing and upgrading from the seats, concourses, toilets, corporate/premium seating, amenities, lighting etc. You couldn't make up this absolute farce
Check out the proposed roof renders. They’re fire! Cable-supported, semi-translucent ETFE film like SoFi. I hated this stadium so much that I started to find it fascinating. The tower refurbishment was done really well.
Man, with $870 million, I would rather tear down and rebuilt the entire seating bowl or maybe the whole interior to update the stadium. Forget the roof!
$870 million to renovate an obsolete dome that will bring in around $20 million per year in tax revenue means it will take 43.5 years to repay the cost of this renovation. there has to be more to this than just the roof. is it possible that the current structure wasn't designed to hold the weight of a fixed roof & maybe they will replace the upper clamshell of the seating bowl so it can support the weight?
The stadium is falling apart, that was decades ago, when parts were breaking off. I remember during the night, a huge chunk of cement fell into the stands, luckily nobody was there. Even worse, not long after they played an Alouettes game there. Sorry, the stadium has outlived its usefulness, time to knock it down and build something new. They want a nice roof, build one like they have in Vancouver for the B.C. Lions, B.C. Place Stadium.
The CAQ prefer investing on that roof than in Québec City bridges. If we had a stadium with a fabric roof in Québec City in need of a very expensive replacement, and don't think that parti would have accepted to spend that much money on it. About de demolition cost, I think it's because they don't want to dynamite it. I think the should dynamite the the smoke detector and build on new stadium at it's place keeping the tower. They should also reduce the amount of concrete around and add vegetation.
Just abandon it and build a new stadium outside the city limits like Jerry World and make it nice. Sell it to someone for cheap after you build the new one.
As a Canadian tax payer this is crazy. The original cost was nuts. And just for a roof on the worst stadium. I grew up going to commuimweith stadium in edmonton and it was always a nice stadium to goto and steal pretty nice
What a pickle. Short of hosting World Cup Soccer, without the NFL or MLB (save for Toronto), Canadian cities simply don't need 50k+ stadiums. If it were up to me, I'd gut the interior of the "O", retain the shell, then build the equivalent of Tim Horton's Field on the inside (for the CFL Alouettes), along with the addition of other smaller sport facilities (lacrosse, roller/ball hockey, tennis, volleyball, etc). Heck, maybe even include movie theatres that could be used for lectures and smaller concerts. Milk the interior space for all it's worth as a multi-season indoor facility, so as not to let that billion dollar legacy landmark go to waste. (Sure, Percival Molson Memorial Stadium may be charming, but to me it looks bush-league on TV).
That is Quebec dollars. More or less 80,000 in Canadian dollars. Rest to government officials to supervise. Remember just like all municipal contracts, 1 perso working, 4 supervisors.
When they say it costs $2 billion to tear it down, do they mean both the stadium and the tower? Would it be possible to just tear down the stadium but keep the tower?
The tower actually has parts added on, as there are cracks in it, as the architect that built it cheated in the design. I'm surprised it hasn't fallen over yet, but sooner or later it will.
The arena is the pride of the city and the country, an iconic outside the box design and an olympic legacy. I'm glad they are investing in it instead of destroying it. They celebrate their architectural history by renovating it, even tho the cost is astronomical. At least the money isn't going to the war industry. Yes i know, many taxpayers would disagree with me but try to understand the importance of an icon and a legendary structure. If it was demolished there would be big hole in canadian history that can never be recovered or replaced. No i don't live in canada but in sweden where we spend billions on immigration that doesn't benefit the country at all. It's not just a bad investment, now we got the worst crime wave in the history of europe because of that crazy and mostly unknown political agenda. I wish they would spend the money on a high speed train network instead and to develope new highrise suburbs. The progress is minimal here
It's on top of the metro so traditional demolition is not an option, the building also has the Olympic Parc aquatic centre that would have to be replaced so add another 50 - 100 million to replace that. Its a total shit show.
Two different projects. There will never be baseball at the Big O again, as they already reconfigured the playing surface. The only impact this has on baseball is when a potential owner asks the govt for money or a loan.
Personally, I think we have more of a stadium problem that we can fix in North america, including canada. So I am happy that quebec wants to refix this stadium. To give it a new, Life So maybe Quebec is Thinking and hopefully they can get and expansion for the MLB Maybe the Expos
I don’t know about the rest of you but I have had it with all this Taylor Swift crap. She is the new Kim Kardashian with all this attention. Please Stop!
