We were in the middle of the Sea of Cortes on a perfectly still perfecting clear night. The stars reflected off the water and it was like sailing in space. Unforgettable.

Yeah, when Hurricane Sandy hit a few years back, large portions of New Jersey, New York City, and surrounding areas were without power for a number of days. This was, unfortunately, before I fully appreciated the sky or understood light pollution, and this I did not even think to look up!!! Get this... you want to hear how ignorant the intelligence of people has become? I heard people called the police because they had no idea what the brown cloud in the sky was!!!!!!!! I don't blame them, though. Seeing something up there (not knowing what it is in that case) and understanding it is far greater than you... it is a life changing experience.

I found My life long happy place on a summers night in August in north wales. After an amazing day, Lying on the roof of my car at the peak of one of the valleys wrapped in a thick duvet staring at the clearest night sky I have ever seen. Witnessing too many shooting stars to count, falling asleep with someone in my arms who until that time I never realised how much that person would mean to me. Our universe is beautiful x

If you want to find a stargazing spot near where you live use Google Earth and try to look for open areas without trees and stuff like that away from human settlements and roads with artificial lighting or highways with a lot of traffic because car lights are also bad (use Google Street View to find out if the nearby road has artificial lighting or not). If you find a spot like that on top of a hill or a mountain that's also a plus because the view will be better. If you plan to go watch the Milky Way in the evening the Moon phase needs to be between the last quarter (last half Moon) and new Moon so the Moon won't be above horizon causing light pollution (last quarter Moon is fine since it will set hours before sunset, first quarter would still be in the sky hours after sunset) You can also download a stargazing app like SkyView on your phone to see in which direction is the Milky Way and where's the Moon relative to the Sun.

Christopher Becker ...but I've been on that field at Cherry Springs with several folks visiting from 'down under' and Brazil and they were amazed at seeing new sights in the northern sky for the first time in their lives. It's 'all relative' - but the important point this video makes is the disappearance of dark skies - and they keep going - despite the main point of the vid supposedly being "astronomers: use the weather channel".

AZ is fantastic ti see the milky way. Super clear skies and a very dark environment in the deserts offer an unbroken view of the milky way. I have seen it many times, a glowing band of light. Sometimes if you are far enough from city lights you can have a shadow cast from the starlight. Its truly magical.

I camped in New Mexicos Jemez Mountains back in 1998. At night the stars enveloped the entire sky. The milky way was spilled all over the place and was actually a distraction. The sky was so bright it cast shadows as if it were daytime. Never before or since have I witnessed anything like it. Hale-Bopp comet was really cool, but that is gone. If you want to see the stars, take my word for it and make the trip. You won't be disappointed. Also if you've ever flown at night just look out and you'll see where there is an absence of ground light. Aim for the center of the darkness and check it out on the ground. The inland western USA is loaded with choice spots.

Every child should watch the sky. The perception of reality that we get by realizing our tiny little spec of a dot among the immense universe is crucial to place not only our planet, but us as human beings. I think this alone could diminish the crime rate in the cities. Every child should be able to see through a telescope and through a microscope. The micro and the macro sense of our world gives us perspective. There are too many huge egos around.

Not mentioned on many lists, most likely because it's so remote, is the Steens Mountain Wilderness Area in far Eastern Oregon. Quoting- "Steens Mountain Wilderness, Oregon Even in years of low northern lights activity, the aurora borealis can be seen here. Why? The area claims the darkest nights in the Lower 48. The unpaved Steens Mountain Back Country Byway provides easy access to the hinterlands, but check road and weather conditions first: Some stretches may require four-wheel drive."

For people who live in Texas and can't travel anywhere much, just go to Waco Texas. I remember one time I was there and I forgot to bring my telescope and there was 100's of stars in the sky. And You could see a little bit of purple from the galactic arms of our galaxy. I recommend a good place that is dark, not alot of light around, and completely clear skys. But the best place in the world to go stargazing (You need to go to California for this) is Death Valley. Even though it is hot, it is really really good to see stars. not even light at all unless if I'm mistaken. Again, can't be anywhere where there is light or clouds because 1. Clouds will cover the stars and 2. the light will lighten up the clouds making the sky also lit and making it harder to see the stars.

One of the best places to star gaze is Taumarunui near Mount Ruhapehu about 1000 m elevation on North Island , New Zealand, Summer time in the Southern hemisphere brings the earth's tilt that no Northern hemisphere sites can match - the milky way stars dance in the celestial dust
@zedvee2668

Not quite true, Wintertime is better in the Southern Hemisphere for Milky Way viewing. The galactic bulge will be overhead, with Scorpio and Sagittarius at their highest. Summer time is great though... you get Orion, Sirius and the Pleiades... but Summertime the Southern Cross will be low. It all depends, every season has it's beauties. I'm living in the Northern Hemisphere and really miss my old friends; Crux, LMC, SMC, jewel box cluster, Tarantula Nebula, 47 Tucane.

Nothing against Cherry Springs, PA. -- but NO PLACE in the Northern hemisphere can the "Most Beautiful Stargazing Location on Earth" -- simply don't have the assets. Southern Hemisphere has the Milky Way galactic center as well as two dwarf galaxies in the local group visible with the naked eye (the Magellenic Clouds). In general, light pollution down south MUCH better as well. Really impressed by their enthusiasm and ability to turn out a critical mass of people. We need more of that....

Almost twenty years ago, I took my youngest son to Space Camp in Huntsville, Al where I flew a space shuttle simulator and learned that a math degree added to my education would qualify me to be a pilot astronaut. After some additional investigation, I learned that an "over fifty" astronaut's purpose was to provide measurement of advanced bone marrow deterioration, which is accelerated in space and which represents the primary barrier to human endurance in space travel. I passed on the attempt but I still fly for fun. Astronomy turned out to be the book I could not put down. It is fascinating to watch the reaction of people when they see, for instance, a star cluster through a telescope. One night, out of a group of twenty cub scouts, a thirty five year old dad was almost dancing with excitement. I highly recommend the hobby to all. You never know who it will touch.

thank god I live only 3 hours away. Also, are the light restrictions the same for the professional area and public area?

Then there is Rodeo, New Mexico...but not during Monsoon Season (July/Aug.) Rodeo, NM and Portal, AZ (next village over) are home to tens if not hundreds of astronomers, and home to three astronomical communities.

This place is disappointing when there are many darker skies elsewhere on planet Earth.

I hear that the skies in N. Korea are very dark. The NORKS should sponsor a star party. /s

This is on my to do list... to take one vacation to one spot with amazing star gazing abilities. low light pollution, and an open space that keeps most of the trees pretty far from the spot... then just need some ideal weather and that's all I need. Sadly, I live in the U.P. of Michigan and we have less then 6 days on average every year of clear sky. Otherwise more often then not it is partly cloudy or SNOWING! :(

And I live in South East Michigan, where it's too bright for it. Least I'm in the Ann Arbor area, could be worse and be in Detroit's lights, which I can still see the edge of it from where I live I would think the UP would be much better in good weather. I should pay more attention the next time I'm vacationing near there :3

Waterclaw Well, you would have to get out away from the towns to get an amazing view. Some of the city lights are still the old LIGHT UP THE SKY instead of the ground kind. However, what I was getting at is here in the U.P. we do not get many complete clear nights. On average we get around 6 days per year where the sky is completely clear. Sadly, more often then not that is during the winter when it is wayyyy too cold to be hanging outside lol.

I don't know where you are in the UP, but just a little way south of the bridge is the dark sky park in Emmet County, just outside of Mackinac City…we have plenty of clear days here to see amazing stars!
